Or, Expand All Days
DAY 1: Depart from home / Fly overnight to Ljubljana

Depart from home for Slovenia. The particulars of your arrival overseas are detailed with your flight itinerary.

DAY 2: Arrive in Ljubljana

Upon arrival at the Ljubljana Airport, claim your luggage and clear customs. VBT's local representative will meet you outside the customs area in your arrival terminal and will be holding a VBT sign. Your representative will help you transfer (approximately 30 minutes) to your hotel. The rest of the day is free for you to settle in and explore the city. Tonight, choose a restaurant for dinner on your own. VBT provides you with City Information that includes information and recommendations on what to see and do in Ljubljana during your stay.

Please note: If you arrive early, your hotel room may not be available until after 2 pm. You may store your luggage with the reception desk. If you are traveling from the west coast, your arrival in Ljubljana may not be until late in the evening.

Upon arrival, stroll the quiet pedestrian streets of this romantic city and explore on your own.

Hotel: Lesar Hotel Angel

DAY 3: Meet Trip Leaders / Warm-up ride / Welcome reception

VBT No-Air Package guests: Meet your local VBT representative and the rest of the group at our Ljubljana hotel—Lesar Hotel Angel (address: Lesar Angel Post, Gornji Trg, 7, Lubljana Slovenia; tel: +386 142 55 089; fax: +386 142 55 090) at 10 am. Please come dressed in cycling clothes and ready for biking. Make sure your luggage is tagged with VBT yellow tags. If you have brought your own pedals, please have them ready to give to your Trip Leaders.

If you are delayed for any reason, please contact Lesar Hotel Angel in Ljubljana to advise them of any travel delays or changes, and the staff will pass your message on to your VBT Trip Leaders.

VBT Air Package guests & Pre-trip Extension guests: Meet your local VBT representative at the Ljubljana hotel at 10 am. Please come dressed in cycling clothes and ready for biking. Make sure your luggage is ready in the lobby and tagged with VBT yellow tags. If you have brought your own pedals, please have them ready to give to your Trip Leaders.

From Ljubljana, transfer by private motorcoach (approx. 2 hours) to alpine Italy where we'll be treated to staggering vistas of the snow-capped Julian Alps to the south and the rugged peaks of the Carnic Alps to the north. We will meet our Trip Leaders in a countryside setting outside the charming hamlet of Valbruno, Italy. After our included lunch they will hold a safety and bike-fitting session followed by a warm-up ride. The area is particularly charming and ideal for easy bike rides through the scenic Canal Valley (Val Canale).

This afternoon explore the main street of Tarvisio and maybe indulge in an Italian gelato or visit the town's quaint shops. Later we gather for a welcome reception and a delectable dinner prepared by our hotel owner.

The Hotel Edelhof is a charming family-run inn set between the surrounding forests and the center of Tarvisio making it easy to explore everything this small alpine town has to offer.

Hotel: Hotel Edelhof Wellness & Spa
Meals: B, L, D
Daily Options: 10 miles (16 km)

DAY 4: Cycle the Alpe Adria Bike Path / Venzone

Today we have the opportunity to experience the renowned “Alpe Adria” Bike Path which enables cycling enthusiasts to ride from Salzburg through the Alps all the way to the Adriatic Sea. Our journey will follow the recently paved train path downhill from Tarvisio to Venzone, sometimes travelling through old mountain tunnels opening upon wonderful views of the "Val Canale."

At times we will catch glimpses of the River Fella, a tributary of the Tagliamento. We can pause in the small town of Pontebba located at the confluence of the Fella and Pontebbana creeks. The railroad line in Pontebba was the target of heavy aerial bombing during World War II as this was Germany's main resource for transporting supplies to Italy. During our scenic ride we'll pause for a picnic lunch prepared by our Trip Leaders.

Later we shuttle to the old town of Venzone which has been restored to its medieval splendor. This excellent example of reconstruction has been declared an Italian National monument. The reconstruction includes the Cathedral of St. Andrea, home to the mysterious Chapel of St. Michele; its famous mummies date back to 1647. Prior to burial, these bodies were perfectly preserved. They were so recognizable decades later, some people periodically retrieved the bodies to commune with their dead ancestors. Later this afternoon we will shuttle back to our inn.

Back in Tarvisio, enjoy time to relax. Then join your Trip Leaders for an Italian wine tasting with a local wine expert. Choose a local restaurant for dinner on your own.

Hotel: Hotel Edelhof Wellness & Spa

After breakfast this morning, shuttle or ride to Lahgi di Fusine (Fusine Lakes). Enjoy an inspiring walk around the lake with breathtaking views of Mt. Mangart. Back on our bikes, we ride an easy path through a pristine alpine landscape into Slovenia. Our first destination is the charming village of Kranjska Gora, famous for its World Cup ski area and an adjacent peaceful retreat for nature lovers. Explore the village at your leisure and find a quaint restaurant to have lunch on your own.

After, we cycle through pine forests, passing picturesque wooden houses along the Sava River. Our next inn, the Hotel Vitranc, is in the quiet hamlet of Podkoren. Named for the beloved stallion of the first owners, the Hotel Vitranc has a long tradition of hospitality. The house maintains the simplicity and charm of a family-run mountain guesthouse; you’re sure to immediately feel at home. Its Pajzl, or pub, has a separate entrance and is still the preferred place for locals to stop for a chat and beer after dinner.

Upon arrival, take some time to settle in and relax, or enjoy a stroll before we gather and learn how to prepare struklji, a Slovenian sweet, with Chef Darinka and some local friends. The class is an opportunity for cultural exchange with people still tightly linked to old traditions.

Dinner is at a traditional Slovenian restaurant in the nearby ski resort town of Kranjska Gora.

Hotel: Hotel Vitranc
Meals: B, D
Daily Options: 14 or 22 miles (23 or 35 km)

DAY 6: Cycle the Radovna Valley / Lake Bled

Our alpine adventure continues today with a ride through the Radovna Valley, passing pristine pasturelands. We stop at one of the farms to sample the wonderful alpine cuisine produced in this region of Slovenia. Afterward, we continue to the storybook setting of Lake Bled. Circumnavigate the lake by bike and, if time allows, you may opt to take a boat to Bled Island—the only natural island in Slovenia and home to the beautiful Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary. Or walk up the hill to Bled Castle, the oldest castle in Slovenia, offering amazing views over the lake.

After our exploration of Lake Bled we shuttle back to Podkoren to relax or enjoy a sauna. Indulge in a hearty dinner at our inn tonight.

Hotel: Hotel Vitranc
Meals: B, L, D
Daily Options: 16, 26 or 30 miles (25, 42 or 48 km)

DAY 7: Bike to Austria / Easy bike paths along the Gail and Drava Rivers / Velden

This morning, a scenic reel on an easy bike path leads through a century-old forest into Austria. Beyond a pass—and through the immense limestone wall formed by the Carnic Alps and the Karavanken—we continue cycling along the banks of the Gail River in Carinthia. This region is a scenic paradise of rivers and small emerald lakes set against the backdrop of the Noric and Carnic Alps. En route we'll enjoy a traditional Austrian alpine lunch at the Almwirschaft Hut.

This afternoon's longer option takes us to Wörthersee Lake. Our path follows the valley through deep wooded slopes and sunny cornfields. At times we'll catch a glimpse of church bell towers or small villages laid out like blankets at the feet of mountains. For a shorter option we stop and explore the town of Villach and wander the pedestrian streets for shopping or sampling a local brew. From Villach take a short train journey to Velden and enjoy a leisurely walk from the train station to our hotel, where we’ll stay for the next two nights.

Velden is known as the little “Monte Carlo of Carinthia.” Home to many wealthy families of ancient lineage, it is a town of elegant mansions, colorful gardens and refined lakeside restaurants. Our hotel is the magnificent Falkensteiner Schlosshotel Velden, an ancient castle on the lake's banks. It was reopened in 2007 after a long and detailed restoration. Condé Nast Traveler has featured it as a “Hot Hotel” and its spa center as the “Hot Spa” of Austria—making it one of the most luxurious and innovative hotels and resorts in the world.

Hotel: Falkensteiner Schlosshotel Velden
Meals: B, L
Daily Options: 25, 31 or 40 miles (40, 50 or 64 km)

DAY 8: Cycle around Wörthersee Lake

Our bike ride today takes us around the Wörthersee Lake. On the northern side, Pörtschach is an exclusive tourist resort, beautifully located on a little bay. Continuing to the southern bank, we arrive at the picturesque village of Maria Wörth, which features two little medieval churches and a small peninsula that juts dramatically into the lake. A more challenging option for avid bikers follows the hills south of the lake into a scenic forest. For shorter options, a boat ride across the lake helps you cover ground more quickly.

You may shuttle back to our hotel and spend the rest of the afternoon swimming, relaxing or enjoying water sports on our hotel's private beach. Thanks to the natural hot springs, the waters are sure to be warm and pleasant. Alternately, you might choose to pamper yourself at the hotel's luxurious spa center.

In the evening, we gather for a festive farewell dinner.

Hotel: Falkensteiner Schlosshotel Velden
Meals: B, D

  • A beautifly, scenic ride with views of the Alps everyday

This was our 12th VBT biking tour and it was way up on the top of our favorites. It was one of the most scenic of all of the VBT tours. The guides, Samo and Damjan were great as they entertained and educated us. The lodging ran up and down the scale as we stayed in a ski resort chalet in Italy, a funky hostel like hotel in Slovenia (not our favorite) and a really up scale, top of the line, hotel in Velden, Austria. I also recommend the pre and post trips in Lubjanja and Salzburg. A great adventure.

    Yes, I recommend this tour.

Thank you for your feedback. We use the best and most indicative hotels of each area that we visit on this tour. The Slovenia hotel is a small family-owned / operated inn located in the quaint alpine town of Podkoren. We have received many positive remarks from our past travelers regarding its authenticity and location.

  • What fun to experience three different countries, cultures, and cuisines in one trip!

How great is it in one trip to bicycle in three beautiful countries, taste delicious cuisines and learn about interesting cultures all while being spoiled by VBT! The bicycling was wonderful, the leaders informative and fun, and the accommodations most comfortable. This was one of my favorite out of thirteen trips with VBT. I doubt that I would have ever experienced Slovenia if VBT hadn't offered it for a trip - now it's my new, favorite country.

  • Best trip I ever had!!

I really enjoyed the exercise combined with getting to know the local culture by such friendly and helpful guides. The beauty of the countryside was spectacular! being able to stay in the urban areas, and then the farm-like settings was a nice way to learn about the countries. It was a trip where we formed personal bonds with the guides, and with new persons on the trip.

  • best vbt trip on offer, hands down

We have been on 5 VBT trips including Croatia, Tuscan hill towns, Burgundy and New Zealand, but Slovenia (and Italy, Austria) totally takes the prize. Gorgeous mountain scenery, three countries/cultures, cuisine...cycling on the fabulous Alpe Adria bike path...and not completely overrun with tourists. Ljubljana is charming and ending in Salzburg a delight. Do yourself a favor and do a pre-trip in Ljubljana, or go over even earlier on your own, and explore the Karst region, the Postojna cave, Predjama Castle and the Lipica stud farm, you won't regret it. Truly no other VBT tour comes close to this one.

  • Spectacular Scenery!!

We have been on 5 VBT trips and although we have enjoyed all of them tremendously, this one rose to the top. As with the Croatia VBT trip, the scenery is breathtaking. On this trip, you are biking every day in valleys surrounded by mountains. We went in May/June so there was still snow on the mountain peaks. Biking was easy with extensions for people who wanted more of a challenge. Most of the biking was on bike paths which we appreciated. Fun biking in 3 countries. Superb VBT guides as usual. Take advantage of the Ljubljana pre-trip. All in all, an unforgettable experience!

  • tour leaders are the best!

I could hardly believe how perfect the leaders were. There were there in 1/2second if you needed them, but they never hovered. How did they do that? And they were a wealth of information on culture, custom, religion, history. I commented to fellow travelers who had been on several VBT trips (this was my first) that these must be the best guides of all. No, they said; they are all like this! And on my next trip (Holland Bike & Barge) and I found that to be true!!

I was very impressed with the history and language knowledge of the trip leaders. They watched and listened to the riders and knew just what to say and do to keep spirits up when the weather wasn't ideal. Their sense of humor was contagious.

We can't imagine a better combination of active and leisure, scenery and cultural activities. This was our first trip with VBT but we've decided that we will make this our priority, annual getaway. Great food, top notch accommodations, and perfect guides. We are hooked.

  • The Fun of Mountains and Bike Paths

One of the best parts of this tour was being able to ride on parts of the Alpe Adria bike path with marvelous views of mountains, meadows, water falls, and smooth bike lanes! Our guides were full of details of the past and present history of this varied area as it fluxuated between Austria and Italy occupancy. It was a truly magnificent outdoor living classroom where one could imagine battles being fought. This was the second time I have done this trip and it was just as enjoyable as it was the first time - a really great way to experience nature in all its wonders.

This was my 5th trip with VBT and my first trip to Slovenia. Slovenia is beautiful and it's people are so very friendly. Slovenia is a taste of Old World Europe. This trip took us to 3 countries each with it's own culture. VBT is the way to go! Relax, exercise, beautiful scenery, wonderful food, wine and people!

This tour was fantastic and very enjoyable. Our trip leaders made it that much more fun as they were very knowledgeable of the three countries including the landscapes and history. The scenery was extraordinary with majestcic vistas and the hotels where we stayed were very nice and met all of our needs as well. I would highly recommend this trip and very much loved this part of the world. VBT made it a great experience and a most wonderful trip.

  • Get some heat relief!

The SAI tour was a perfect escape from the hot, hazy, humid, NJ summer! Cool alpine air, clear skies, mountain breezes! The pace and distances biked were comfortable, with plenty of opportunity to extend daily rides and challenge yourself on a few hills. Quiet roads and rail trails, charming views, even an encounter or two with local wildlife - goats on the trail, cows nodding hello. Loved the selection of hotels - not your run of the mill modern luxury chains. They had personality!

  • Don't miss Ljubljana!

I used to think that the best VBT trip was your first (Provence in my case) but with this trip I have been proven wrong. Cycling through small Italian, Austrian and Slovenia villages on well maintained bike paths with the Julian Alps all around you was amazing. Our guides Samo and Matej were so friendly and interesting, they shared their country's history and culture with us and of course most of us knew little of Slovenia's history. I loved all of our conversations. We took the post trip to Ljubljana, what a great place. The main area is for pedestrians only so it was very easy to enjoy the river and all of the restaurants and shops. The architecture and Slovenia people are wonderful, don't miss it.

  • What a trip!

Riding through the Alps, visiting alpine villages and lakes, eating local food, and most importantly, meeting the warm and friendly people who live there! The first day was great, and each day was better than the last. The weather (cold and rainy) didn't impact the fun we had. I think the highlight of the trip was riding through the tunnels on the bike path. Very cool! The success of the trip was a certainly due to the efforts of our guides, Samo and Matej. They are fantastic people!

We loved the variety of this tour taking us to popular and unknown areas of Austria, Slovenia and Italy. The guides were so knowledgeable in history, cuisine and culture. Our bikes were fabulous. We loved bicycling on dedicated bike paths so we could experience awesome views of the Alps, pastures and go through tunnels without mishaps. Slovenia was a highlight in learning a new country and culture. This tour took us to national parks and to two magnificent lakes. Lake Bled in Slovenia was magical. Our tour ended with an indulgent spa experience in southeastern Austria. We highly recommend this trip!

What a fun trip this turned out to be. The guides could not have been better, hotels that ran the gamut from quaint to luxurious and scenery that was beautiful. The bike paths were great and provided a variety of options for all levels. There were many added features such as wine tasting, sing alongs and a cooking demo. This was a great trip with plenty of opportunity for more aggressive terrain for those who wanted it. My husband and I bike at different levels so this worked well for us. The trip leaders (Damien and Mateo) were very informative about the areas we were biking and could not have been more charming. Accomodations ranged from a simple ski resort hotel where we had free range of the whole building to an ulta-luxurious hotel. Food was delicious! This trip is a hidden gem!

  • Where is Slovenia?

The first question we were asked by friends is, "Where is Slovenia?" The second question was, "Why would you want to go there?" The common American perception for a former communist country like Yugoslavia is that you'll be staying in a third world country in a concrete block hotel. That perception changes as soon as you arrive in Lake Bled. All of the travel shows we saw of this area included this picture postcard perfect lake with Slovenia's only natural island and a 16th century church in the middle of it. The Hotel Vitranc is the three star hotel for the first two nights, but the biking and surrounding alpine ski area are definitely five stars. Any hotel patio that has a view of a World Cup skiing venue is a perfect place to relax in my book. Sure there is more to the tour. The biking is easy and mostly off-road. The Austrian towns are pedestrian-friendly and the Schloss Velden hotel is not to be missed. Including the pre and post trips is a no-brainer. As usual, the guides are great, as are people on the tour. Heck, even the Buckeye fans were nice to us Badger fans. The purpose of this review is to say Slovenia is not the reason to do another VBT trip. It's the reason to do this one.

  • This trip is the stuff of fairy tales!

This trip is the stuff of fairy tales! From my first glimpse of the medieval castle looming over the hauntingly beautiful Lake Bled, through the dark Slovenian forests of the Julian Alps, to the palace-like 5-star hotel in Velden at the end of the ride, it is magical. Although passing through eye-popping snow-covered crags, the biking earns its "easy" rating on mostly paved bike paths that follow streams and railroad beds. I love telling people I biked through 3 countries (Slovenia, Italy, and Austria ) in one day! A well-thought-out itinerary, lavish accommodations, cultural exchanges and exceptional guides all conspired to make an unforgettable vacation for this first-time VBT rider. I can't wait to sign up for my next trip

  • stunning and scenic, incredibly enjoyable cycling

If you love alpine views and quiet, enjoyable cycling, you will love this trip. The Julian Alps are breathtakingly beautiful - it often feels as if you are riding into a painting, with the blue-green spruce trees contrasted against the incredibly vertical granite peaks above. The combination of bike paths and quiet roads makes for enjoyable cycling with stunning views - mountains, rivers, and expansive valleys. And there are always some challenging extensions if you want to stand up in the saddle and do a little climbing. Our two guides were the very best - generous, knowledgeable, kind and encouraging. They always made us feel more like visiting friends than tourists, and helped us in so many ways over the course of our trip. An incredible scenic cycling destination for any ability - highly recommended!!

  • MUCH more than I expected!

This tour was sensational. Having never been to Europe, much less to Slovenia, I was apprehensive as to what the tour through Austria, Slovenia and Italy would be like. I was expecting SOME mountain vistas, but everyday took us through exquisite alpine valleys. Every time I thought I had the "perfect" mountain landscape photo, I would ride a few miles and would be awed by another view! The tour guides probably made this tour extra special. Matej and Damjen were fun, knowledgeable and anxious to help us enjoy the week. Great guys and a lot of fun! From the rural settings of the village Podkoren to the 5-star accommodations at Lake Worthersee, the hotels gave us a real look at the variety of the region. The food varied according to the region, and was delicious and plentiful. The guides made sure the rest stops had fresh fruit, water, nuts and even candy bars!! The only complaint I had, it ended too soon!

  • The variety of sights is awesome

We enjoyed seeing everything from the villages where the 'locals' live, the lovliness & cleanliness of the city of Villach, to the gorgeous Alps! The tour guides, Matija & Samo were fantastic. The restaurant in Villach was especially enjoyable. The soup offerings were terrific. Since we eat a low fat diet, including fish & chicken would prefer more vegetable options and fresh salads overall.

  • Fantastic trip!

The trip had everything we wanted in a vacation--great lovely adventurous fellow cyclists, great bike paths, and terrific food. I'll never forget walking out at night in a small town in Slovenia and seeing the night sky--we don't get that kind of a view of the constellations and the Milky Way where I live. And seeing the snow-capped Alps--truly a great experience. We loved every minute!

  • Breathtaking sights, panoramic vistas and scenic bike trails!

With relatives born in Slovenia & Italy, this trip was a must for me as my first VBT trip. Adding Austria to the mix made it even more spectacular. Being able to bike on scenic trails, see the countryside and beauty of each country we toured made the trip one to remember. From the first greeting by VBT, to the hotels, dinners and extra events, it was a pleasurable experience that I plan to add to with more bike tours! This is the way to tour - fresh air, exercise, new friends and new experiences!

This trip hasto be one of the best biking trips we've ever taken. The group and our leaders were fabulous. The daily biking was just right and the support from our leaders Damjon and Samos couldn't have been any better. Our trips went off on time and the days were filled with wonderful scenery and interesting days such as Lake Bled andthe Falkenstein hotel. Wow!!!! We're still awed by our super time.

  • Amazing Scenery

If you are looking for a cycling trip that is packed with gorgeous scenery, the Sovenia, Austria, and Italy tour is the one for you. There were areas where the snow-covered mountains, the blue skies, emerald green lakes, and warm sunshine just took your breath away in its beauty. Our tour guides were rightly proud of the countries they represented and treated us to the best of the best in their homelands. We learned about new foods, new drinks, new customs, and new places. It's appealing enough to return to that area sometime in the near future and continue exploring this beautiful part of the world. We enjoyed every day of the tour with easy cycling and delicious foods. Sharing the trip with many new cyclists also added to the excitement of each day. The hotels were in a class by themselves, not only in the services they provided but the local charm they represented.

  • Excellent variety of landscape, from alpine valleys, scenic lakes, forest and farming to top European cities.

Most travelers know little about the republics that used to be part of Yugoslavia, but now are independent. Slovenia is on the "sunny side" of the Alps and advertises more sun than most other places. We found beautiful lakes, including Lake Bled, a tourist resort, and long alpine valleys between ranges of high mountains, mixed with farmland and forest, with spectacular views, yet with generally level biking and wonderful villages and towns. We stayed in picturesque villages, one very close to World Cup downhill and ski jump slopes. Adding parts of nearby Italy and Austria was a bonus, and the cities of Salzburg and Venice rounded out a delightful tour.

  • The tour hit all the bases, a real home run

This tour had everythng we were looking for. The trip leaders could not have been any better, just the right mix of fun and professionalism. The tour was organised so that we were able to ride from hotel to hotel on transfer days instead of taking a bus which was a really nice feature. The biking was easy as advertised, but there was enough daily mileage and there were optional rides for the people who wanted more biking. The scenery in the Julian Alps was spectacular. The accommodations were excellent; the spa at the Schloss Velden was a big hit with my wife. The food was great and the people we met were very warm and friendly. Finally, Venice was a perfect place to end an already memorable trip.

  • Wonderful easy bike riding through scenic small towns and gorgeous scenery in Austria, Slovenia and Italy.

Well organized, well led and full of beautiful bike riding. We were pleasantly suprised with gorgeous Slovenia, and loved riding along paved or gravel biketrails without any cars for most of the trip. We rode mostly along rivers, through forests, farmland, picturesque tiny towns and green pastures full of wild flowers, all with spectacular mountains close by. Our guides were friendly, knowledgeable and eager to help in every way. The daily schedule was just right and we felt pampered along the way. We appreciated the mix of some group meals and activities with plenty of opportunities to explore and eat on our own. We loved our trip and are already thinking about which VBT trip to take next year.

  • THE VERY VERY BEST

I have been on many VBT trips and this was a favorite. The accomodations were outstanding, as always. The restaurants were always accessible to our hotels and the meals that were included were typical of the terrain. The biking was adapted to your ability and desire for riding that day. The leaders are always one of the highlights -- knowledgeable of the area and constantly aware of ones needs. Sooo considerate. Airlines are well planned as far as connecting flights and always accomodate your needs as to seat preferences. VBT is such an outstanding organization and I have travelled with several other Biking Companies and can say that the value and experience from start to finish is unbeatable!!!!

The guides were charming and knowledgeable, the hotels were excellent, the routes were well-marked, and the countryside included in the tour was spectacular. There were options for those who wanted some challenging and longer routes. The pace of the tour allowed for lots of sightseeing and stops along the way. I highly recommend this tour.

  • Memorable experience

This was my first VBT trip, and my first organized tour. I was always a do-it-myself traveler. VBT changed that. We were treated to an amazing experience. I met great people, had every detail of my trip perfectly planned and executed and had a beautiful riding experience. We traveled through three countries on well maintained bike paths, through alpine meadows with scenery that was absolutely beautiful. The hotels were all beautiful in different ways , ranging from authentic, quaint to five star luxury. I would highly recommend this trip!! My experience was so positive I'm off with VBT again next week!

  • I loved this tour!

This tour offers beautiful scenery, well-planned routes, and great accomodations. When I took this tour, the first stop was Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, which was a beautiful city to explore for a day. I see that the tour now begins in Salzburg, which happens to be one of my favorite places; so you can't go wrong in that regard. I must say the absolute highlight of this tour, for me, was the hotel in Velden, Austria. With the beautiful outdoor swimming pool right next to the lake, so you could easily jump right from one to the other, plus the fabulous spa, in addition to what was probably the most luxurious hotel room I've ever stayed in, I truly felt pampered! I could be tempted to do this tour again for that experience alone. Our tour leaders, as always (this was my 3rd VBT tour), were outstanding.

  • Beautiful scenery, wonderful people, interesting history

I took the Slovenia trip in 2011. We lucked into fantastic weather, but even without that, the daily routes went smoothly past beautiful mountain scenery, the tour leaders were so knowledgeable and fun, and the places we stayed at were delightful. In Austria the hotel was amazing. I understand the trip has been modified since then, but I imagine most of the highlights would be similar. Slovenia, its scenery and its people, is just wonderful.

  • A great trip

The trip we took was absolutely great, however VBT has seen fit to change the start point to Salzburg, Austria which is overrun with tourists. Ljubljana is certainly worth two days, and starting in the city avoids a long bus ride. Our guides were very knowledgable about the area through which we cycled and the scenery was magnificent. It was perhaps the best trip we have ever taken!

  • Great scenery but needs more development

This tour was new when we went on it and it was the first time we had tried an "easy" rated tour. On the positive side, the scenery was fantastic. The route follows around the base of the Alps and winds through alpine villages and meadows. However, much of the time we were cycling on bike paths surfaced with crushed stone or gravel, and therefore had to keep our eyes down to avoid sliding out and crashing. We assumed the route was using the paths to keep it flat and therefore "easy," but it really detracted from the trip. Because the trip was new, ( I think,) there was only one "cultural event" which was OK but did not approach the quality of those on our previous trips. The guides were wonderful as were the hotels and the food.

  • Very country charming with lovely backdrops!

I truly love this biking trip. With having just had an ACL repaired four months prior this was a test of determination. The pictures that I was able to capture on this trip are quite awe inspiring. The locals welcome you- as they did me to their backyard for some drinks and picture taking of a wall of Clemetines. The surpirse at the lake in Villach, Austria where the hotel was the best I've yet to this day to encounter. Amazing that VBT can pull all this together as a package. The hillsides in Slovenia take you back and give you the sense of tranquility, but the people are robust and energetic. Although it was interesting to see a town on the water- Venizia, I would have much preferred an extra day at one of the other places we had traveled. I did like that we traveled from one spot to the next location more than I've been able to on other VBT trips.

  • An Excellent Introduction to VBT

This was our first VBT vacation trip as well as our first bicycle vacation. We thought the package tour was exactly as promoted. The days rides were well planned over safe pastoral and urban settings. The scenery was beautiful and the destination towns and cities interesting. Our guides (who also doubled as superb mechanics and technicians) were really excellent in a number of ways. They brought to our attention all the usual historic landmarks and facts and, in addition, they provided our tour with many of the cultural traditions and stories that make the lives of the local people fascinating and interesting. Throughout the trip our luggage and belongings were managed seamlessly and our regular snack and meal stops along the days ride were always pleasing. Going to Burgundy with VBT this Fall!

The most interesting part of this trip is the three cultures (Slovenia, Italy, and Austria) that are combined in sharp contradistinction to each other. All are equally beautiful, yet the language, food, culture, and attitudes vary dramatically. The final lodging in Austria is memorable and a great way to cap a beautiful journey.

Everything about the tour was top notch. The routes, the scenery, the accomodations and the tour guides. You could not do this tour on your own as you could in some areas of France or even Italy. Beginning the tour at the top of the Alps and then a slow descent was perfect, then, being transported to the next venue via van was great. To try climbing those mountains by bike would be too daunting for most riders. Ridiing through the farmland comprised of farms averaging 2 hectgares in size gave us a feel for the lifestyle of the slovenes who live there, in addition to being a scenic treat.
