Why You'll Love This Tour

Overview

The Czech Republic, Germany & Austria

On this richly rewarding reel, you’ll pedal into charming Bohemian villages, historic riverside cities, and romantic landscapes. Old World Europe meets stunning natural beauty here, and we’ll experience it to its fullest by bicycle, Danube river boat, train and foot. Explore the medieval haven of Cesky Krumlov, a Czech artists’ enclave. Marvel at the “three rivers” setting of German Passau. And thrill to Austria’s magnificent Wachau Valley. Off the saddle, connect with the people who call this precious corner of Central Europe home during special VBT events.

  • Touch the distinctive cultures of three European lands
  • Explore by bicycle, boat, train, and foot
  • Get a local perspective of Czech life during a guided tour of historic Cesky Krumlov, a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Or, Expand All Days
DAY 1: Depart the U.S. / Fly overnight to Prague

Depart the U.S. for the Czech Republic. The particulars of your arrival overseas are detailed with your flight itinerary.

DAY 2: Arrive in Prague

Upon arrival at the Prague airport, claim your luggage and clear customs. If your luggage is lost, you must fill out a PIR form before leaving the customs area. VBT representatives are not allowed into the customs area. Also, make sure that your VBT luggage tags are attached to your bags so that your representative can identify you.

Upon leaving customs, enter the arrival hall and look for your VBT representative, who will be holding a VBT sign. Your representative welcomes you to Prague and helps you transfer via taxi or van (approximately 30 minutes, depending upon traffic) to your Prague hotel. (Note: At this time, please verify with your VBT representative the time of your transfer from your Vienna hotel to the Vienna airport at the end of your trip.) If your VBT representative is not immediately in sight, there is a “Meeting Point Column” just outside of the Arrivals gate. Please wait there, as the VBT representative may be transferring with an earlier arrival. She should arrive within 30 minutes of your scheduled arrival.

If you arrive early, your hotel room may not be available until after 2 pm You may store your luggage with the reception desk. The rest of the day is free to relax or explore the city with your included 1-day Prague Transportation Pass.

VBT provides you with City Information in your Final Travel Booklet that includes information and recommendations on what to see and do during your stay in Prague.

Hotel: Mamaison Hotel Riverside Prague

DAY 3: All guests meet in Prague / Meet Trip Leaders / Warm-up ride and welcome reception

At 8:30 am, all guests meet the VBT representative at the hotel in Prague and transfer to Cesky Krumlov in the south of the Czech Republic (approximately 3 hours, including a stop on the way). Our hotel in Prague is the Mamaison Hotel Riverside Prague (address: Janáckovo nábreží 15, Prague 5; tel: +420 225 994 611). Meet your Trip Leaders during our stop en route.

Cesky Krumlov is a unique town in Bohemia, built at a curve of the River Vltava and dripping with medieval authenticity. The historical center has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992. In Cesky Krumlov, meet our local guide, Standa, and follow him for a short walking tour and introduction to Czech life. Get some tips from Standa on finding a restaurant for lunch on your own.

At 2 pm, check in to our beautiful hotel in Cesky Krumlov. Settle in, and then join your Trip Leaders for a safety and bike-fitting session, followed by a warm-up ride around the city. Later, gather with the group for a welcome cocktail reception and dinner at the hotel restaurant.

Hotel: Hotel Ruze
Meals: B, D
Daily Options: 9 miles (13.5 km)

DAY 4: Holasovice UNESCO Site / Cycle to Plav / Guided tour of Castle Cesky Krumlov

After breakfast we will take a short shuttle ride to the village of Holasovice. This uniquely preserved village is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its typical Baroque farm houses. After exploring the village, we begin cycling through a beautiful and protected landscape to Plav, a typical little Bohemian village on the banks of a small river. If you like, board the VBT shuttle to avoid pedaling the few small hills this morning. Lunch today is hosted by a local family, allowing us to get a real feel for Czech daily life.

Return to the hotel with the shuttle allowing more time to explore the city center or enjoy additional bicycling on a longer optional ride this afternoon.

In the late afternoon, explore Cesky Krumlov or visit the Rosemberg family chateau, on an optional walking tour. Its preserved Baroque theater and original stage are still used for Baroque opera performances three times a year.

In the evening find a cozy restaurant where you may enjoy dinner on your own.
Hotel: Hotel Ruze
Meals: B, L
Daily Options: 21.5 or 26.5 miles (34.5 or 42.5 km)

DAY 5: Discover Sumava, the largest national park in the Czech Republic / Cross the Czech – German border / Cycle to Passau

In the morning, travel by train through Sumava National Park to Nova Pec, not far from the German border. Take an amazing bike ride through a beautiful forest, far from traffic and villages. At Nove Udoli, we walk into Germany. This unique border crossing was closed in 1945 and reopened some time ago for pedestrians and bicycles only.

Our first Bavarian reel follows a downhill stretch of former railway track. Bavaria is among Europe's most beautiful and serene cycling areas. On your way, stop at a tavern for a typical lunch, prepared by the owner-family. Continue cycling to Waldkirchen, where you can shuttle or bike to the historic Baroque city of Passau, situated at the confluence of three rivers: the Danube, Inn and Ilz. Tonight, enjoy dinner at the hotel restaurant, right on the romantic Danube River.

Hotel: Altstadt Hotel
Meals: B, L, D
Daily Options: 18, 29 or 44 miles (30, 48 or 73 km)

DAY 6: Ride along the River Inn / Explore Passau

Enjoy a leisurely cycle along the River Inn, the frontier between Germany and Austria. Start by following the German bike path. At Neuhaus, cross the river to the Austrian town of Schärding with its colorful, Baroque-style burgher houses on two town squares. After exploring Schärding, return to Passau. En route, stop for a delicious picnic lunch on the river's opposite bank, where the Neuberg fortress looms. Use the rest of the afternoon to explore Passau and shop the flea market and antique shops. You might choose to visit magnificent St. Stephen's Cathedral. Dinner is on your own tonight; you'll find that Passau offers many dining choices.

Hotel: Altstadt Hotel
Meals: B, L
Daily Options: 16 or 22 miles (26 or 37 km)

DAY 7: Danube impressions by bike and boat / Schlögener Schlinge

Start your day with a boating adventure on the most popular river route in Europe. Cruise through the famous Schlögener Schlinge in Austria, where the Danube snakes through steep, forested mountains in a series of sharp and scenic bends. Silence surrounds you, except for the occasional hum of passing barges. (Note: For those departing in October, cruising is not available and is replaced by a coach transfer.)

Begin cycling at Schlögen towards Aschach, where you stop for lunch on your own. Continue through a beautiful forest, then follow the Danube bike path to Ottensheim, renowned for its hilltop castle, before we conclude our ride in Linz. Here, we transfer by private motorcoach to our hotel at Weissenkirchen.

This charming village is dominated by St. Michael's Church, which dates to 987. There are also many Renaissance buildings with romantic inner courtyards. One of them houses our inviting family-run hotel. Many of Weissenkirchen’s vinegut (winemakers) and wine cellars are located in beautiful, ancient manor houses. Perhaps you'll savor a famous young heuriger wine in one of these taverns during dinner at your leisure tonight.

In Melk, you may want to visit the spectacular Benedictine Abbey, one of Europe's largest Baroque monasteries. Eat lunch on your own here, perhaps in the abbey gardens, before cycling along the Danube to the lovely village of Spitz.

From Spitz, cycle back to Weissenkirchen and maybe opt to continue farther to Dürnstein, where Richard the Lionhearted was kept prisoner in 1193. Tonight's farewell dinner is in a local restaurant within a private, ancient winepress room.

  • Wonderful memories and great friends

I took this trip with my father in August 2014. We had an incredible time making memories that will last forever. The tour leaders were phenomenal and I feel like I got a true, insider taste of the Czech Republic, Germany, and Austria. This trip exceeded my expectations!

    Yes, I recommend this tour.

  • Great tour

Since this was my first trip I didn't know what to expect. I was surprised how well run and organized the trip was. Everything ran smoothly with transportation, hotels, and biking. The pre and post trip was well worth the money. This trip is classified "easy" so anyone who knows how to ride a bike could take this trip without any worries. The guides were great and couldn't do enough for you. They were there for your every need. The meals that were supplied were great. Every hotel supplied a good breakfast. I am planning on going on another VBT tour next year I just don't know where I will go.

    Yes, I recommend this tour.

  • Not the best VBT tour.

We have been on quite a few VBT tours. This trip was a real disappointment. The guides were good, but certainly not top notch or memorable. Too much biking in the "woods". Accommodations were average snd pretty tired looking. As VBT gets larger the quality seems to be slipping.

    VBT Product Team - September 4, 2014

Thank you for your feedback. This departure’s Trip Leaders have a combined excellence rating of over 92% based on our traveler evaluations. Location is a big factor in choosing our hotels and the smaller boutique hotels on this vacation are rated the best in the regions we visit and are centrally located in each town or village. Many of our guests have sent us comments about how they enjoy the scenic cycling routes though farmlands, quaint villages and along the Danube on this tour—which is one of our most popular vacations.

  • As Usual, VBT Pulls Off Another Fantastic Tour!

This was our 4th VBT Tour and each was wonderful in its own way. First off, our guides could not have been more accommodating (Hana and Zuzana) and accommodations were excellent. Included dinner and lunch locations were often a special surprise (you need to go to find out why). The cycling was pleasant and not too much, and there were enough people on our tour where my husband and I could separate and ride with individuals of like abilities (my husband is a much stronger rider, so its nice for us to separate while riding and we enjoy the experience more...I'm not struggling to keep up with him, and he's not doing circles around me). Once, I decided to ride alone, and one tour guide always takes up "the back," so you don't need to worry about getting lost. Personally, I consider most VBT trips as tours with cycling NOT cycling tours. The cycling is only a means to experience the local culture and ambiance at a different level. You can see, smell and experience life differently from riding a bicycle than from looking out of a car or bus. If you are an avid cyclist and want to ride at 20 mph for 50-100 miles a day, this probably isn't the tour for you. There is too much to see and too many stops for a hammer fest. Also, some trails are on gravel, and NOT well-suited for a road-bike--especially when it rains out. Finally, on all the trips we have taken, VBT has always augmented their cycling tours with stops at key attractions with local tour guides blessed with enthusiasm and in-depth knowledge. Helmets off to VBT for the organization, our tour guides for their constant "American Smiles," and the guides and folks in the hotels and restaurants that made this trip a great experience. My only comment to VBT: consider including tour guides on the pre and post trips,at least at an introductory level. VBT recommended a tour guide in Prague, Barbra, who was wonderful. We explored Vienna on our own. I do think that it might have been nice, especially for the pre-trip, to have a paid tour guide included with the trip. It would have given the group more time to get to know each other, as well as alleviating the details of finding a tour guide and paying for it separately.

    Yes, I recommend this tour.

  • Excellent trip!

A fun blend of various transportations! We were on trams in Prague, a train ride through the Czech Republic countryside, a riverboat cruise down the Danube, various bus transfers during the trip, and, of course, cycling! At the end we were reluctant to leave our guides!

    Yes, I recommend this tour.

  • Super time in Eastern Europe

My two weeks in Eastern Europe were wonderful. I was prepared for rain, but the weather was fantastic. I loved the two days in Prague on my own, as there was lots to explore and I loved the adventure. Wonderful restaurants and so much to see. History is incredible -- so much older than our west coast. The biking seemed to be a bit more than "easy" to me, as there were more uphills than I was expecting on an "easy" ride. That was only a few days, however; and I think "easy" can be relative. But slower riders managed the hills, and the leaders and the group were good about keeping track of everyone. The trails in Germany were somewhat bumpy and gravelly, but they wound through the most beautiful country. If you know European strategy games, then you'll get it when I say, it was like biking through a life-sized Carcassonne game. Really unforgettable. The only way I could leave each of the remarkable cities was to promise myself I would return. Well, realistically, it's not likely, but the memories are indelible. Our group leaders made the trip even more enjoyable. Lots of laughs and generosity, always ready to support us with whatever we needed.

    Yes, I recommend this tour.

  • Loved this ride. The itinerary and leaders.

We have been on several VBT trips - this ranks among the great ones. We have now biked much of the Danube from Brataslava to Vienna. I cannot think of anything better. The guides were terrific as always with VBT, the villages and venues were superb. I cannot say enough about traveling through Europe on a bike with comfortable accommodations available at the end of each day. We'll be back!!!

    Yes, I recommend this tour.

  • Ahoj, what a way to see Central Europe!

This is our 3rd VBT trip. Like our other tours, everything was very efficient and went like clock work. Buses showed up when they were supposed to as well as pick-up vans. We also traveled by train, ferry, barge...what a way to cover three countries as well as get dropped off at the BEST areas for biking with scenic views galore, hillside paths that pass apricot groves, vineyards, white poppy fields, charming villages, forests, ruined castles, and of course, the beautiful blue Danube! Need I say more?! We loved the accommodations and towns that we stayed in and riding through a variety of scenery found each day. No two days were alike. The rating of Easy was accurate. Besides a few short hills on the first couple of days, the rest of the week were easy rides...which allowed me to bike the longest ever each day on a bike trip. Our tour leaders were exceptional. Zuzana and Tomas took very good care of our group, were fun-loving and flexible, and provided much information about this part of the world. One of our many perfect days was biking all morning, working up an appetite, and then coming upon Zuzana's "picnic" lunch with a barbeque of all sorts of sausages and mustard and a variety of other food from the area. Sitting on picnic benches and washing our lunch down with cold local beer with our cohesive group of 20 was truly a fun and memorable moment! We visited Prague as a pre-trip and were so glad that we did. That city is full of Old World charm, same with Vienna. The hotels in both cities were great, especially the hotel in Vienna, which showed marvelous customer service to our group (very welcoming and organized for us) when we arrived. Oh, it was great never having to stand in lines at any of the hotels; they were ready for all of us with the keys to our rooms. Our entire trip went off without a hitch, and we got to cover a lot of scenic area on this trip; VBT did it again with great planning and execution! If you can swing it, finish up your Central Europe tour with a visit to Budapest (via train from Vienna), which our friends did and also loved.

  • Great riverside biking

I have taken many VBT trips and had heard that this was one of the best. While there are certainly MANY things to recommend this trip but there is one drawback that is uncommon to the rest of the trips I have been on. If that drawback matters to you then I would not recommend this trip. The positives: Incredible scenery - Czech fields and castles, German forests and rivers, beyond charming Austrian villages. The biking was easy with only a few hills. Most biking was on paved paths except in Germany where it was packed gravel (a bit more challenging but fine and better for the environment). Hotels were clean and comfortable and had a sense of the local place. The negative: A LOT of transfers. Day 1 is a 3 hour bus ride from Prague to Cesky Krumlov, Day 2 biking ends with another bus ride back to the hotel unless you want to do some very difficult biking (90% of our tour took the bus), Day 3 starts with a bus and then a 2 hour train ride, Day 4 was a "normal" VBT day to and from the hotel, Day 5 starts with a 2-3 hour boat ride and ends with another really long bus ride, Day 6 was hotel-short ferry-hotel. So only 1 day of biking does not involve a transfer. Because these transfers are timed, this trip does not have the lazy come and go when you want that I personally love about VBT schedules. I know it's a lot of ground to cover and there's probably no other way to do it but it's something that I wished I had considered more carefully before booking this trip.

    Yes, I recommend this tour.

    Response from VBT
    VBT Product team - August 8, 2014

Thank you for your feedback. Because this tour is unique in the sense that we visit three different countries, it has more shuttling time than a VBT tour that only covers a small area of one country. However most of our travelers agree that the added benefit of combining so many cultures into one vacation is worth the additional shuttle time and have even mentioned how they enjoy the train and ferry transfers.

This was our first VBT ride on their "most popular trip" and it was so absolutely perfect that we are already booking another ride. Everything from our pre-trip in Prague to cycling through villages, scenic countryside and biking along the Danube exceeded our expectations. Our guides Jan and Hana were incredible. They were so informative, helpful and fun that they made this an experience we will always treasure. If you choose to make this trip, you too will be glad you did.

  • Tour is good, advertisements are relentless

The tour is mapped through lovely areas and the hotels were good quality. The Czech Republic and Germany and not foodie destinations, but ending in Vienna makes up for it at their many fine restaurants. The guides were knowledgeable, well prepared and very supportive in all aspects. I would recommend this tour. I would also recommend that you tell VBT that you do NOT want to receive the frequent advertisements that start to flood your mailbox once you inquire of them. Junk mail generation seems to be their other specialty..

  • This Tour has a great variety

I think the variety of having guides for some touring and being on our own for other touring helped to make this a really great trip. The great guides also made the experience even better. We were blessed with great weather the entire trip. VBT covered just the right about of meals at the right time. Well done. I would highly recommend this trip, it was great fun and I learned a lot about this part of our world.

  • Grown Family of Five...All Smiles!

My wife and I wanted a memorable, carefree active vacation with our three grown children (ages 18, 21, 27). All 5 of us had a very busy, hectic year and really wanted to get completely away from our routine in a limited time frame (ten days). The Czech Republic, Germany and Austria trip exceeded all our expectations and then some. Easy smooth international travel plans, beautiful local lodging, engaging personable guides, great food, new friends, welcoming locals and comfortable rides with simply amazing scenery! The smiles on all our faces all week long still linger when we recall the trip. A truly worry free dream vacation. We're looking forward to our next VBT Trip.

  • Perfect European Vacation

First VBT trip and I will definitely do more. Great opportunity to see 3 countries and bike on some amazing paths. Loved the planned tours interspersed during the trip and enjoyed the pre trip to Prague and really glad I chose that over Vienna. Austria was absolutely my favorite part of the trip.Beautiful country and I loved the inn in the Wachsau valley where we stayed. Trip guides were awesome and went out of their way to be accommodating. We were fortunate in that the weather was clear and sunny the whole time but the temperature a little warmer than usual which was fine with me. Yes, I would recommend this trip!

  • Let it rain

Of my 11 VBT trips there is only one I'd rate higher. Surprising since it rained incessantly, rider and bike (still don't like those Trek tanks, Gregg) filthy from gravel paths, and temperature rarely above 60 F. Accommodations at all five stops five star. Cesky Krumlov, Passau, and Weissenkirchen (2 nights each) utterly charming towns. Food not great, but as expected in this part of the world; beer wonderful! Would have liked more hills, but as advertised. Very compatible group of 20. One excellent guide and one "best guide ever." She really made the trip. Clone her.

  • Like biking through the Old World

This was a beautiful trip even though it rained at least a part every day! We still had some occasional sunshine, and nothing could dampen the wondrous sights of this incredible vacation. The pace was a little busy but very doable and I'll never forget the feeling of riding through medieval villages and along the Danube. This was an "easy" rating but I will say there are some hills. The van is there for you if you don't want to ride them. The leaders were wonderful.

  • Great trip for beer and wine lovers

We loved seeing Prague, cycling along the Danube, visiting Bavaria and drinking local beer and then ending up in Austria's beautiful wine country where we were introduced to Gruner Vertliner, a crisp white wine. Our guides, two brothers, were top notch and gave us a real understanding of the local customs, like greeting cyclists with Ahoy (spelling probably different). The cycling was pretty easy (mostly flat) so we had no problems keeping up and did all the extensions available. A great experience, as always with VBT.

  • Amazing trip!

My family of four ranging from 24 t o 60 years old adventured on this trip together and everyone had a great time. The biking scenes were spectacular with mountain views. These were places that we may not have explored on our own. We also chose a few extra days in Prague at the beginning of the trip and wish we would have done it in Vienna at the end of our trip. The staff were great and the company was wonderful as we travelled during the flooding in Prague last year so they ensured that everything ran perfectly. Our family cannot wait to do another trip again!

This was my first VBT trip and it could not have been better. The itinerary was well designed and all the hotels were places I would go back to in the future. I was concerned about biking 6 days in a row but the beautiful countryside made the days fly by. Be sure to take the pre and post trips because those cities have so much to see. The leaders are so knowledgeable, professional and fun.

  • Wonderful experience!

Our Czech Republic, Germany and Austria bike trip was a wonderful experience from beginning to end! As independent travelers, we are not used to having everything taken care of and not having to find hotels and attractions! But the VBT guides did it all, and did it well. What a treat for us!! Our luggage handling, accommodations, most meals, bikes, routes and everything we needed was always top notch and on-time. Accommodations were in smaller hotels off the beaten track. Many were in centuries old buildings, but had all of the modern comforts we wanted after a day of riding. Meals were terrific, and the snacks provided on the stops along the bike routes were both welcome and great! Our guides were very knowledgeable, patient, and fun! No matter the problem, they were cheerful and full of solutions! The bikes were great, and while we didn’t have any problems, we know that they would have been there with both a solution and good cheer! We had one day of cold and rain, and after 18 miles of riding, many of the group had reached their limit. Our guides arranged for taxi rides to the day’s destination for the great majority of our group. The biking through the countryside and along the rivers was fabulous! We experienced these countries in a way we would never have done on our town in a car or on a train. Our group members were of all biking level, and the routes accommodated our differences. Overall, the biking was a little more difficult than we anticipated, but there were opportunities to make it easier. And it was well worth the effort! We would recommend this trip to anyone with a desire to see the real country and not just the tourist attractions in the large cities.

Everything about this trip that figures into the enjoyment of a VBT trip was in place on this trip. Beginning with two of the finest guides we've ever had to the friendly people everywhere to the beautiful scenery to the good hotels and fine food I can't imagine changing anything. Glad we were not a week later because the weather begins to be an issue. I have the best memories to keep of this trip.

  • A very well run tour with great scenery and very good food.

I highly recommend this tour, including the pre and post trips in Prague and Vienna. The guides, Jiri and Andrea were very knowledgeable, technically competent and had good senses of humor. The logistics of the tour, including train, boat and bus transfers were very well handled and added value to the tour. The scenery, particularly along the Danube is a highlight. Although the weather caused some route changes, we were able to add alternate events. The warm up ride route needs some adjustment and the directions could be improved. There were several tough hills on the 2nd day that could take this tour out of the easy category. We are planning another VBT tour in 2015

We spent 14 days in Bavaria. The trip leaders, Jiri and Andrea were very generous in sharing their personal and family history particularly about the effect on Communism on them and their families..They were fun, attentive and professional at all times. Great tour leaders make the trip and they made the trip. The countryside was beautiful, the group very interesting but the weather was marginal. I can't hold VBT responsible, but Jiri and Andrea were very flexible, changing plans as needed. It was not only allot of fun but we learned so much. Great travel changes people. This trip did that. We came home and immediately scheduled another trip for 2014.

Our tour leaders, Jan and Hana made our trip from Prague to Vienna memorable. They were always nearby to help with any questions, bike issues, local information, and guidance. The locations were awesome including Cesky Krumlov, Passau, Melk, Durnstein, and Vienna. Biking through the Sumuva National Park in Germany was beautiful with an incredible lunch. It was the best potato soup that we have ever eaten. Biking along the Danube through the Wachau Valley is simply special and spectacular.

  • a good solid trip

this trip was not the most dramatic or beautiful of all the VBT trips I have taken, but it was a very pleasant relaxing one. I liked the boat ride, and train trip as variations. the countryside was very picturesque, and the biking was easy. the only reason it didn't get 5 stars from me was the inclusion of Passau for two nights. It didn't talk to me. Would you consider Salzburg instead? I spent a week there after the trip and enjoyed the city and the biking immensely. We spent a lot of time in the van anyway, what's another hour or so? A minor complaint is that a lot of time was spent in the forest. I like some of that, but really prefer little villages and towns, like the last day. But, as I said it had a little bit of everything, so that was good this is a good intro trip for new clients. It was all that it promised, and did not disappoint.

  • a wonderful way to experience the Czech Republic and the Danube River.

Prague and the Czech Republic are wonderful places to visit, and this trip made it even more magical. The biking varied from trips through the enchanting bike paths in the Sumava National Park to the scenic bike path along the Danube River. The accommodations were first class. I especially liked the Raffelsberger Hof in the beautiful Wachau Valley in Austria (A family run hotel housed in an old renaissance building). The hosted dinners were exceptional and featured local foods, wine and beer. This is our second VBT trip and consistent with the first trip our tour guides were exceptional. They combined a wealth of local knowledge with a desire to make the trip memorable for all of us.

We had a tremendous time! Once again, VBT excelled at everything: our hotels, our meals, our bike routes, and our guided tours. We thoroughly enjoyed the pre-trip to Prague--it has to be one of my favorite European cities. I wanted to stay in both Cesky Krumlov and Weissenkirchen, and keep on biking, instead of returning home! Our trip leaders, Jan and Hana, were excellent, as our VBT leaders always have been. • Breathtaking experience!

We traveled in sept/oct with a closed group of 15. This is vbt's most popular tour. Very worthwhile. You experience 3 countries in a short amount of time. Our group was very athletic and many of us kept a good pace throughout this tour and added the daily extensions offered. This made the overall experience moderate, not easy. Some hills as well. The guides professionalism and group tailoring is what makes VBT what it is. Both Andi and Boudi were the best. Engaging, caring, high level bike experts. Everything is taken care of while your with the group. The hotels used are used regularly by VBT. Luggage, shuttles, most meals all arranged.. 4 and 5 star eurpeoan hotels are 3 and 4 for Americans. Not a big deal. Meals were superb, give you a real taste of local cuisine. One thing you should be very aware of is the time of year you travel. VBT does not highlight this. Your Biking experience is related to 1. Weather conditions( they bike rain or shine), 2. Clothing( be prepared for all kinds of weather, layers are necessary). 3. How you prepare yourself for a bike trip. This is listed as level easy. Highly advice if you want to get the most out of your experience is to train by riding a bike 4-6 months ahead of time. It's called saddle time. Can you sit on a bike for approx. 4-5 hrs/day, 5 days in a row? The more you are prepared the more you'll get out of your trip, yes they have vans when your tired, but who, wants to van it when you can ride it? A wonderful, well, organized trip, highly reccomended!

  • Another fabulous VBT trip

This was my second VBT trip (the first being Tuscany by the Sea). It was just as wonderful, and quite different at the same time. The leaders were fantastic, funny and helpful. They work so hard (but make it look easy). The trip is really three different experiences in one. Czech Republic, Germany and Austria offer three different looks at that part of Europe. I loved Cesky Krumlov, although I had never heard of it before. Passau was amazing -- to see how well they had recovered from the devastating floods from just last June. Austria was just beautiful and serene. My favorite day was the 30 miles along the Danube, watching the swans float by. It was so releaxing and beautiful. I took the opportunity to visit Terezin Concentration Camp during the 3-day pre-trip to Prague, and I highly recommend it. It was a sobering experience, and I'm very glad I went. (I have tried unsuccessfully to upload a few pictures -- it always times out on me.. so I'm just going to give up on that.)

As always on my 4 previous VBT trips, the leadership was, once again, excellent! The scenery and bike paths along the Inns and Danube Rivers was outstanding. Additionally, the morning river cruise through the locks on the Danube and the morning train ride in Germany added "value" and variety to this Czech Republic, Germany and Austria trip.

  • Our Active Vacation in the Czech Republic, Germany, and Austria

This was the 3rd biking trip that we have taken with VBT and we had a wonderful time. VBT organizes everything for you and everything went very smoothly from start to finish. When we travel to foreign countries, we like to go with VBT because we feel safe and secure knowing that we have tremendous support from great tour guides and we come away with a real flavor for the country we are visiting. The biking was awesome and challenging, the places we visited ranged from quaint and charming to magnificent, the hotels were beautiful and accomodating, and the food was delicious and representative of the town or country we were in at the time. There were many diverse activities on this trip as well. We had tours of palaces and monasteries, took a barge ride down the Danube River and a train ride, too. Our guides, Andy and Jan, were both very supportive and knowledgable, attending to all our needs and teaching us about the culture, geography, history, religion, language, education, and government of each country. Our group of bikers was also a great group and we all got along very well. Our vacation was an adventure we will never forget.

  • Perfect Vacation with nothing to worry about

From the minute I arrived at the airport in Boston until the moment I touched back down there was not a worry to be had. The hotels were marvelous, the guides made everything seem so easy, but they worked very hard at that and we all benefited! The included meals were at fun local places that added to our experience. The riding was perfect for a trip where you want to be a tourist. 25-35 miles on average of mostly flat terrain. I definitely recommend the hybrid bikes due to crushed stone bike paths and cobblestone streets. I brought my own saddle, shoes, and peddles and would do the same again. I am so used to being clipped in that I would have been unhappy without them. The saddle took up so little room in my suitcase it was worth it. Prague should not be missed, but Vienna I could have passed on. I fell in love with the Czech Republic and want to go back. This was my 1st trip with VBT. They are really a top notch company and this is a must do trip.

Beautiful scenary. Trip was very well planned. The hotels were great. The guides were professional, very helpful, and knew are names by the first day. Prague is outstanding -- picture perfect, inexpensive, and very walkable. Biking is great for a fit and active beginner. The best bikers were the oldest in our group. Our group of 19 was fun loving and we had a blast together. If you like an active vacation this is it. But beware, this trip will make all your future vacations pale in comparison!

Can't say enough great things about the two tours I have taken with VBT (last year my wife and I also did the Tuscany By The Sea tour). VBT is a well oiled machine where they have taken the best of what each area has to offer and cut out the rest to maximize enjoyment (and safety). For example, we didn't actually ride out of Prague or into Vienna -- both of which would have been potential nightmares. Those trips are handled by a nice coach bus. The hotels were all fantastic, the guides over the top and great company -- and bonding -- with other guest over shared riding accomplishments. We are already planning next year's VBT trip. One key tip is that the better bike shape you are in, the more you can ride and really get the most out of the tirp.

  • Each day was so different!

We were amazed at the recovery of this area from the damaging floods in June. Aside from the historic flood lines on some buildings and the silt buildup on the sides of the bike baths you would never know it happened! The variety of activities including train rides, boating, biking and cookouts along the Danube, crossing country borders on our bikes and visiting picturesque villages along the way were such fun! The guides were wonderful always very informative, accommodating and great company. The riding was easy/moderate with the guides either adding more adventure for those wanting a challenge or offering alternatives for those who would prefer a more relaxing ride. Enjoy the great food while meeting new friends!

  • Great city and town visits; mixed biking routes

The pre- and post-trips in Prague and Vienna were terrific. My opinion of the bike routes is partially affected by the fact that my trip occurred during the flooding rains of June 2013. The tour leaders did an admirable job of managing the difficulties posed by the extreme weather and scrambled to create alternate activities on the days we could not bike. Our hotel in Passau was flooding as we left it--the weather was that bad. Unfortunately the flooding meant we were unable to bike the last two days, which I suspect would have been my favorite as it looked like they would have afforded idyllic rides on paved bike paths along the river. The previous biking days either offered unremarkable views or were on narrow, gravel paths with the amount of road between my bike and cars or a drop-off to a river too close for comfort. We did visit some appealing Austrian and German towns (did not get to Melk due to the floods), had a wonderful lunch in a Czech home, and the guides were, as always, fantastic, which is why I rated this tour "good."

This tour is a great way to get off the beaten path and experience life in the Czech Republic, Southeast Germany and the Wachau Valley of Austria. The accomodations were very nice and our bike routes got us out in the countryside to really experience life away from the big cities.

  • Spectacular tour

Just got back from 10 wonderful days (2 extra days in Prague) on a remarkable tour that sampled some of the best terrain of Czech, Germany and Austria. We lucked in with perfect weather and two absolutely outstanding guides -- Andi and Zuzana -- who did their utmost to keep our group engaged, on task and completely entertained. I would heartily recommend this trip to anyone with a reasonable fitness level (preparation on a bike at homereally helps in your enjoyment level) who wants to experience an "off the typical tourist track" in central Europe.

This trip was fantastic. Seeing three different countries up close during the same trip was truly a wonderful experience. Much of the ride was on beautiful bike paths. The food was excellent, my favorite being the awesome dinner we had in an ancient wine cellar. Our tour guides Jan and Jeri did a great job of making sure we all were comfortable and had fun. They were a joy. The accomodations were all unique, fit the locale, and were great. This was my second VBT trip and I didn't think I could top the first one, but this was certainly as good. I am a multi trip VBT traveler and was very happy w/our choice. Our guides, Bohdi and Jiri, went above and beyond assiting us in everyway!! I did feel, however, a little rushed compared to other trips.(on the downside: my IPAD was stolen in Crsky Krumlov..on the 4th of July, no less!)....all in all, we had a great time! This was our first VBT trip but won't be our last. We really loved everything about this trip. Our guides were awesome! They really took the time to get to know each of us and made sure all our needs were taken care of. Their job is physically demanding but they were always happy and fun to be around. It would be hard to pick a favorite part of the trip because everyday offered something new and exciting. I appreciated that I didn't have to bike the entire route but could still have fun while riding in the van.

Finding the right words to describe just how good this tour is, is difficult at best. The food, lodging, service of VBT leaders, and bike routes are unparalleled by any other bike tour. While we were on this tour, the NY Times published an article on the top bike trails in the world and the trails on this tour along the Danube were among those top rides. We would heartily agree. Great bike trails, a compatible group of biking colleagues, and two excellent guides made this tour our best VBT trip ever.

This is my 3rd VBT trip and I expected to enjoy the biking as much as I did Provence and The Tuscan Coast. Unfortunately I was quite disappointed. 2 days of riding were on flat, boring gravel bike paths. The recent flood left heavy deposits of silt on the path and the surrounding area. The hotel in Passau was recently flooded and smelled of mildew. I believe it would have been better to re-route the trip and avoid the flooded areas. The trip did not meet my expectations.

Thank you for your comments. This trip is rated ‘Easy’ while the other two you mentioned going on are rated ‘Easy/Moderate’. Our ‘Easy’ tours are designed for those trying a bike vacation for the first time and the bike routes are less challenging than other trips. Unfortunately, the flooding did impact the area quite significantly. We were able to re-route trips that were already started or were soon to start. Work to rehab the hotel and improve the paths after the flood was undertaken very quickly, and overall our guests experienced very little inconvenience given the dramatic initial impact. Our priority was always to deliver a vacation that would meet and exceed our guest’s expectations . Thank you again for taking the time to provide your feedback, we greatly appreciate it.

  • This tour offered a diverse selection of activities, rides, and culture.

This was an incredible "active" tour of three countries. The rides were peaceful but still offered dazzling landscapes and architecture to view. The side tours and trips were unique, interesting, and fun. The ride was easy for the most part and offered some challenging extensions that we enjoyed. The hotels were thematic to the region with extremely helpful staff. The rooms were comfortable and spacious. The meals offered were excellent. Our tour guides were always available, willing, and patient with any question or solution to any problem. They were very concerned with safety which was a challenge in spots as we arrived after major flooding along our bike path. We enjoyed our pre-trip stay in Prague. I would recommend this to anyone going on this tour. There is so much to see and do in a short distance from the hotel. Fantastic Time!

  • the best bicycle tour company

This is our second VBT tour and we look forward to more. I also give permission to VBT to release my name and contact info if anyone would like to chat directly. The first one (Tuscany) wasn't a fluke. The formula for this one is similar: great tour guides, very well-chosen routes, bicycles that are better than you'd rent on your own, interesting and generally excellent hotels, a sense of "immersion" in the culture and food as good as can be expected (in other words, not that good in the Czech Republic but excellent in Germany and Austria, if a bit heavy). The whole thing is very organized and yet it appears spontaneous, with a great sense of discovery. Further, if you price out the tour on your own you'll see that they make most of their money negotiating group deals with the buyers. Hence it is excellent value for the cyclists. We ran into some people from a competitor that charges 30% - 40% more. As far as we can tell it's because they have 3 tour guides when VBT's 2 is plenty, and they stay at these luxury hotels when we "settle" for very charming and comfortable ones, with the all-important air-conditioning. . Nor does VBT leave anything on the table in those hotels. We contacted each one to upgrade on the theory that VBT was getting the cheapest rooms in their group deal. 2 of the 3 hotels said: "VBT already gets our nicest rooms."

  • Only one problem with tour

The tour was great, the hotels were great, the riding venues were well thought-out, and the leaders were wonderful. The only problem we had was with the flight arrangements. We were told by telephone that our originally-scheduled flight times had changed and were given new times. When we got to the airport we were told that the flight times had never been changed and we ended up spending an extra 6 hours at the airport waiting for the originally-scheduled flights.

What a fantastic trip this was. I've never been to Europe, especially seeing it on a bicycle, and what a view I had. Every city and town we went to was unique unto itself with beautiful churches, castles and quaint streets winding through the towns. The scenery along the Danube would take your breath away. • Very Enjoyable Trip

I agree with everything others have said in their reviews of this trip. The routes are scenic, the leaders wonderful, and the lodging very comfortable. I'll mention a couple of things I didn't see covered. This trip is rated Easy. That is generally true, but there is one day of hills that some people will not consider "Easy". There is always the option of hitching a ride back in the van which is what several people in our group chose to do. This was our first trip with VBT and we were surprised to discover that Trip Leaders don't "lead" -- they are behind the group sweeping the track. Each rider must find their own way using directions provided each morning. This can take quite a bit of time, especially if the weather isn't the best. I really urge VBT to adopt GPS technology or some other method of guiding trip participants.

  • The Old World comes to life on this trip.

Prague was a wonderful walking city with a festive atmosphere, even on a Tuesday night! Cesky Kromlov was amazing and the tour by the local guide brought to life, not only the city history but the country's struggles through communism with the typical Czech self deprecating humour. Riding along the Danube through Germany and Austria was picturesque and the ride on the cruise boat was a lovely change of pace. Germanic and Slavic people tend to be a bit more stoic on outset, but they warm up quickly and went out of their way to be hospitable. And, as on other trips, our tour mates were friendly and interesting. We have made new friends.

  • VBT does it again

Every trip my wife and I have taken with VBT ends with the statement; "there is no way that we could ever top that trip" and then we go on another and they do top it. This trip was just wonderful in a way that words can't describe. From the time in Prague (one of the most beautiful and friendly cities we have ever visited) to the last day in Vienna, it was one amazing moment after another. In between we saw such beautiful scenery in and around Czesky Krumlov, Passau, and Weissen Kirchen that was unbelievable. Jan and Bodhie (our tour guides) were just magnificent in that they really brought this whole territory to life with their knowledge of the history, customs, and those little places that are great to visit but would miss on any other tour. They really took care of our group and allowed us the opportunity to really enjoy the culture of this area (they even wore liederhosen to dinner one night and explained the history of the wearing of the garment). Anyway, the food and drink were wonderful, the group of people we spent 10 days with was great, the guides were magnificent in their attentiveness to every detail, the scenery was incredible, and the biking just downright fun. Home run!

easy to moderately easy riding through backroads of 3 countries.. There was a nice diversity amongst the 14 bikers so we really enjoyed getting to know everyone. We all looked out for the single people so they weren't alone. Can't say that we lost weight because we worked up an appetite biking all day! We felt we never would have gotten to know the culture and charm of these countries without seeing the backroads and meeting the locals. The leaders are locals too so you get a first hand accounting of the history, people, greetings, customs and traditions. Can't wait until our next trip!!

  • Perfect Balance - Wonderful Memories

Constructing a trip which meets the expectations of all members of the group is a daunting task; nonetheless, VBT's meticulous planning - of routes, accommodations, meals, and cultural activities - achieved the perfect balance. Every day, each of us could choose how much time we wanted to ride. The van was always an option, and group members respected each other's choices with understanding. Riding through forests, along rivers, and in the cobblestoned streets of ancient villages filled me with joy. The accommodations were varied to appeal to different preferences, but all were excellent - comfortable, clean, spacious, and chosen with care. The meals offered choices and were always delicious and plentiful. I also appreciated having opportunities to choose places to eat on our own, and our guides' recommendations were helpful. Home-hosted meals, private tours of points of interest, and time to explore on our own were available. All of the above was complemented by the care and competence of our VBT guides who ensured that the planning became a glorious and memorable reality.

What a great way to see and learn about the Czech Republic, it's history under communism and now it's rebirth, than by biking through the beautiful countryside and seeing it first hand. Then through Germany along the Danube to the Wachau valley with it's wonderful bike trails and more spectacular scenery of vineyards and orchards between charming small towns. The biking was mostly easy with just enough challenge in some areas to make it more fun and rewarding, Our guides provided a lot of historical information about the areas. From the bike ride to the food and very nice hotels it was another great VBT bike trip I would highly recommend to riders of all levels.

Wine lovers, no need to bring your own favorites from home. Ample excellent regional dry red and white wine options will be available throughout the tour, particularly in Prague and Austria.

  • Excellent in every way!

I was amazed at how professionally every detail was attended to. Every day we were pleasantly surprised by something. The guides, Jan and Hana, could not have been better. We had excellent weather which didn't hurt. No one in the group wanted to give up the bicycles at the end of the trip and many likely would have opted for another week had it been available.

  • Eye-opening and well-managed view of Moldau and Danube valleys

This trip, including the extensions, was well thought out and managed. We discovered the charm and beauty of Prague - along with some of the world's best beer! - during the pre-trip extension. The duration was perfect for us to learn the city in terms of its historical origins, its recent role in geo-politics, the beautiful architecture and its amazing culture. Our experiences during the biking days were equally exciting. The variety of environments - river valleys, historical sites, beautiful small cities and towns, forests, charming rural scenes - was far beyond our expectations. The opportunity to spend time in Vienna with the post-trip extension was also wonderful. We were able to experience the incredible culture of Vienna, its wonderful parks, the varied neighborhoods, and delightful foods. As we reflect on the trip, we remain deeply impressed with how smoothly everything fit together. Our trip leaders were able to anticipate our group's needs and to accommodate all requests. Our hotels were all well-located and very comfortable. Each included meal was excellent. Our maps and cue sheets were well done. The bikes and van support met everyone's needs. This was definitely a trip to remember and to recommend.

  • A wonderful way to see Europe

Seeing the Czech Republic, Germany and Austria from a bike was a wonderful experience! I loved not having to worry about which route to ride, where to stay, or how to transport my luggage from one place to the next. That was all done for me by VBT. All I had to do was to enjoy the riding and the beautiful scenery. The selection of the small towns along the way was outstanding! I also liked the opportunity to extend the vacation on either end. I chose Prague and thought it was amazing.

OK, I get this email asking if I would recommend a VBT trip to a friend. Truth is we already have,, at least 5 friends at latest count since we got back! The people who ride and take these trips are self selected as friendly, active, have interesting lives to share and make for wonderful dinner companions.. Couple that with stunning locations, wonderful guides and new life experiences - Whats not to love? I ate strudel from Prague to Vienna, and didnt gain a pound - how good is THAT! I have been on two trips with VBT, and plan to do as many as I can. It is true joy for me to know that another trip is on the horizon.

What a professional organization. From the lovely hotels and tasty meals to the well-maintained equipment and excellent leaders, VBT did a great job. Mother nature did her part to create stunning scenery & crisp weather. And thanks to the many brewmasters for their efforts to brew great Bavarian beers. With a bit of training, anyone can do this trip and everyone will enjoy it.

  • Probably the most beautiful architecture, villages, and countryside you will find in all of Europe

My wife and I had a great time. The people we traveled with were the best, every single one. We had lots of wine and beer, we laughed, we rode, we played, we just had a fun. Our tour leaders Richard and Robert were simply wonderful and so knowledgeable. Diane fell off a curb in Passau and was unable to ride for the last few days of our trip. But our leaders went out of there way to make the rest of her trip fun and enjoyable. In fact our entire group went all out to make the rest of her trip fun. She became the VBT van lady. In one small village the our hotel manager took her on a private tour of the village in his golf cart at the request of our VBT guide Robert. There were countless acts of kindness for her broken foot. Thank you everyone for making our trip so memorable.

The moment I met our guides Andi and Josi, I knew this was going to be a great experience. They are the most personable, accommodating and professional young men I've had the pleasure of meeting. The accommodations were amazing. Views from the rooms were breathtaking. I loved the restored monastery in Cesky Krumlov! Not only were the meals delicious, the settings where they were held were beautiful. The candlelight dinner in the wine cave in Weissenkirchen took my breath away. What fun we had at the picnic lunch Josi prepared for us... grilled sausages and tableclothes... what a nice touch! The bike routes took us through beautiful forests and quaint villages. The rides along the Danube and Inn Rivers were especially enjoyable. My husband is an avid cyclist while I ride a bike. The daily route options made it possible for each of us to ride at our own level of experience. Van support was always available if you chose to opt out of a portion of the ride. Though the trip was only 2 weeks, the memories will last a lifetime. Thanks Andi and Josi for your part in creating those memories.

This tour went way beyond my expectations. Tour guides were knowledgeable, and ensured all timetables were met exactly, from buses to trains to barges. Hotels were unique and had exceptional food and service. The scenery from the cities to the forests was beautiful, I took over 1500 photos! The tours and tour guides were varied, interesting, and provided insights into the areas we were visiting. It was a trip of new places and great friends made. As a woman who just turned 70, I found your EASY trip description a little off. Too many hills and cobbled streets to manuver. I chose your trips on the descriptions you give - so to keep us "older" customers, please rate your trips in reality. Loved the countryside and places we stayed. So even tho I did not ride as much as I would have liked. the overall trip was great.

I've been on multiple VBT bike tours and I have to rank this one at the top! Our trip leaders were knowledgable, very customer focused, and just plain fun to ride with. The accomodations were, at a minimum, very nice, to quite special. The routes we rode and the scheduled (and unscheduled) activites were wonderful. We had amazing weather the entire trip too!

  • God bless those tour leaders for hanging with this old lady.

The problem with this tour for us was that we were at least 15 years older than the next participant. This is one reason I prefer Elderhostel and their biking vacations. However, the money is about the same for like vacations and there is no question you have superior food and far superior hotels. Your map system of biking is absolutely awful. I thought it was just me until the last or maybe the 2nd to last day of this tour all 20 of us could not even get out of the hotel parking lot correctly.(it was the day we passed the "Venus" replica).

  • See "Old Europe" through modern eyes.

This trip is not just about cycling through beautiful countryside and enjoying charming old European villages. It is more, much more. It is a series of lessons in European and human history, dating from the 12th Century (and before) up through recent times. The "Velvet Revolution" happened only 23 years ago and the vestiges of the communist occupation are still to be found. We enjoyed speaking with the local guides who have lived through turbulent times, emerging into the Western way of life only in recent decades. They are still passionate about their culture and way of life that had been stifled after WWII by the Russian occupation. And so the Czech Republic that we experienced has lovingly preserved its historical structures, has refurbished its towns and cities, and has opened its arms to tourism. The warmth and charm of these people is everywhere to be experienced. In addition to enjoying the vistas, the charming ancient towns of Cesky-Krumlov and the Wachau, we also were able to partake of the pleasures of the local cuisine, wines and fabulous beers. If it were not for the daily exercise I think that my clothing would not have fit me at the end of this wonderful journey. Thank you, VBT, for making this experience possible and for providing us with such excellent service.

Our trip was magical. We have never been on such a fun and rewarding vacation. We biked through the most amazing country sides, through villages and small towns and along the Danube River. There is no way we could have seen all of this if we wouldn't have been on bikes. In additional to our biking we took a river boat, a ferry boat, and a train. What a fabulous experience. Our guides were absolute the best. Not only were they the cutest and sweetest guys you would ever wanted to meet, they also thought of everything. The food was delicious and the accommodations superb. VBT out did themselves. We will definitely travel with them again.

We did the pre trip extension and toured around Prague on our own. The hotel was in a perfect spot as it was close to everything we wanted to see and easy to find after we'd wandered around all day. It was hard for me to choose a favorite place or ride each new stop represented a new adventure. Our guides were very helpful and caring people. I especially enjoyed the information they shared about their own countries. It added a personal note to learning about their cultures. As I rode up and down the verdant hills of Czech Republic, thourgh the forest into Germany, or along one of the rivers, I couldn't help but smile. It was all so beautiful and I felt so lucky to be there.

What a beautiful place the Czech Republic is and what a wonderful tour. My other half is a much better bike rider than I am and this tour was perfect for the both of us. I was able to bike as much or as little as I wanted. He was able to do all of the riding and asked for extensions. It was lovely to bike at our own pace and sight see. All of the sight seeing tours - castles, churches, small towns, food - all wonderful. How much fun and romantic to bike with him along cobble streets and chat as we went along. The biking pace and sights were hypnotic. One could not ask for a better group or guides.

I did not think VBT could match our first VBT tour. We were skeptical but we were absolutely wrong. This trip equaled or exceeded out first trip. If scenery, food, history and meeting new people are items you want to have on a guided cycling trip, then look no more. The trip leaders, just as before, help make the trip memorable. The 40+ years of experience that VBT has under their belt definitely shows. We look forward to our next trip.

  • First time and it whet my appetite

When I got a new bike the summer I took this trip, a friend suggested I try a bike vacation. She had done this years ago with another company. I did research on the web and decided VBT was the best value and offered the most features. (After I decided my younger son, an avid cyclist, suggested I look into VBT--I beat him to it.) I didn't know what to expect, and I totally loved it. The towns we saw, the bike paths, the trip along the Danube--what can I say? It was a fairly flat route, like I'm used to here in Chicago. The weather was a little cold and rainy, like I'm used to here in Chicago. The cultural add-ons were so welcome. I decided after my first trip to take another. By the way, I booked this trip 3 weeks before I took it.

  • This tour has alot of variety

Each VBT trip we have taken has been excellent and this one does not disappoint. First we stayed in central Prague before meeting our leaders and the location was ideal as also the hotel. We stayed in Cesky Krumlov, a walled town, and had our introductory ride in the area. The next day we explored the countryside. We left Cesky Krumlov and boarded a train for 2 hours that took us to a German forest where we started our biking. The scenery was lovely and we stopped along the way to have lunch and continued on to Passau. We biked along the bike paths both on the German and Austrian sides stopping in small towns along the way. We left Passau on a boat along the Danube and after a short boat ride we departed with our bikes to continue cycling along the Danube. For several days we explored small towns, visited abbeys, and saw vineyards. This trip offered so much variety not only in scenery but in various modes of transportation. As always we had excellent guides. You can't go wrong with a VBT trip.

  • Cycling is the ONLY way to see these countries!

I've been to Europe many times, but not to these regions. Since the Czech republic is still in recovery from former communist rule, the county is flourishing. The terrain in pastoral and the people genuine. It was such a pleasant surpise. Our "hotel" in Germany was formerly a shipmaster's house and was truly elegant. Eating a wonderful dinner inside a wine cellar was probably the highlight of the trip. The variety of expericences--the cycling; the tours; the bar-b-que; the boat trip on the Rhine is what makes a VBT vacation so unique. This was our second trip with VBT and will not be our last!

  • Beautiful tour of the countryside between Prague and Vienna, especially cycling along the Danube

This tour was very well organized. The cycling was complemented by a short train ride through the Sumava National Park and a boat tour along the Danube. The tour guides were from the Czech Republic and Germany and they were able to provide information to the group that only locals can. We were even taught some German to get by. The option of three days in either or both cities at the start and end of the tour is a wonderful feature. I would definitely travel with VBT again and I have recommended the company to many of my friends.

    Yes, I recommend this tour.

  • Amazing trip along the waterways of central Europe.

I enjoyed the diversity of terrain, and towns. In general I felt that I biked as much as I wanted to. I tended to do little add-ons that the guides shared with me. The towns and Inns were fabulous. The food was hearty. The friends and guides were the best part of the trip!

    Yes, I recommend this tour.

  • Beyond wonderful

Everything about this tour was better than we were told it would be. The tour leaders (Zuzana and Hanka) were knowledgeable, caring, more than competent, and lots of fun! The places we went and things we saw - spectacular! Food, drink, hotels, and on and on - couldn't have been better! Would we recommend this to others? Yes, and we have. Matter of fact we are coming back for a new VBT tour and are bringing friends with us!

  • Great in so many ways!

Prague is surely one of the most beautiful and interesting cities in the world. Cesky-Krumlov, Melk, and Passau were very pleasant surprises and Vienna a great end to this trip. The villages and countryside along the way were diverse and welcoming. The leaders were very competent and full of positive energy. I don't know how you could beat this trip for scenic and sensible bike routes mixed with an incredibly rich culture of foods, architecture and both very old and quite recent history.

    Yes, I recommend this tour.

Pretty towns, good food, decent cycling. Not one of our favorites, but still a worthwhile tour.

  • A trip with a wonderful balance of small towns, scenic environments and city splendors

Of the several VBT trips we have taken this might be the most varied in terms of places we biked and city experiences. A train ride, biking by the Danube and through forests, the visit to Czechy Krumlov with its magical fairy book castle in addition to the wonders of Prague and the stunning architecture of Vienna made this trip seem like a months worth of adventures rather than just one week.

  • Great tour to an unfamiliar spot

This was wonderful tour as the variety of the scenery and the tour itself was great. Prague was a great place to unwind before the trip got started with it being walkable with a ton of things to see. The trip itself provided great scenery and flexibility throughout the time on the bikes. The guides were great and spent all of their time making sure everyone was comfortable and providing assistance whenever needed.

  • A great value and good introduction to Eastern Europe

We wondered about the roads and amenities when we signed up for this one. As it turned out both matrched usual Western European standards. The Czechs have long prided themselves on culture and hospitality. Both were in evidence. The Guides were competent and comfortable and willing to go the extra mile as shown by finding a chup for my camera after I haplessly ruined the original. We even got a swim in the Danube and a evening at the Vienna Boys Choir!

  • Great Trip

This was a great trip. Chesky Krumlov was a real surprise and I think they have the most beautiful European Palace I have seen. Other than some bad weather, everything was excellent on this trip. The leaders were great, the group was great, the food was great---we loved this trip.

  • Another excellent VBT trip.

The route and the towns visited were excellent. The guides were a lot of fun and very helpful. All the accommodations were excellent as well as the provided meals. The group was the most cohesive of all 3 VBT trips I've done. I credit the guides for having a fun opening cocktail party that seemed to get things off on a good note. I recall a picnic with grilled sausages and a lot of excellent food. It was along our bike trail and next to one of the rivers were biked along. As with almost all my VBT experiences, it met or exceeded my expectations. That's why I'm doing another one next month and am already planning to do yet another one next summer.

    Yes, I recommend this tour.

  • Magical!

I don't know if it was because it was my first bike tour ever, but this VBT trip was perfect in so many ways. My fitness level wasn't the best, and I had to use the van a couple of times, but even van time was great. The hotels were all unique, in the Czech Republic it was a historic castle, somewhere in Austria there was a small inn with the most delicious breakfast imaginable. I took this tour in 2008 when it was fairly new for VBT, I am not surprised at all that it has become one os its most popular bike tours. If it weren't for so many other great destinations that the company offers, I wouldn't hesitate to go on this tour again.

    Yes, I recommend this tour.
