All about VBT | Country Walkers Discovery Tours

A guide to our small-group cultural immersion trips.

By Skylar Bennett, Travel Writer

Two men, one riding a camel, stand in a desert landscape with a vibrant orange sky in the background.

If you're looking for a journey that goes beyond traditional sightseeing, a VBT | Country Walkers Discovery Tour offers a new way to experience the world.

A VBT | Country Walkers Discovery Tour is a small-group cultural immersion trip led by local trip leaders and built around hands-on experiences rather than daily biking or walking mileage.

Instead of focusing on how many miles you cover each day, Discovery Tours focus on the people you'll meet, the places you'll explore, and the experiences you simply couldn't arrange on your own. From cooking alongside local chefs to cruising remote waterways and learning centuries-old traditions firsthand, every itinerary is designed to help you connect with a destination in meaningful ways.

Two individuals in traditional Japanese attire, one wearing a vibrant red kimono with floral patterns and the other in a white kimono with blue floral designs, are exchanging a small blue-and-white ceramic cup in what appears to be a traditional Japanese setting.

What Makes a Discovery Tour Different?

Discovery Tours share the same small-group philosophy that has defined VBT and Country Walkers for more than 50 years, but they're designed for a different style of travel. Instead of organizing the trip around daily biking or walking, Discovery Tours are built around immersive cultural experiences. Depending on where you travel, your journey may include:

  • Learning traditional dot painting from Aboriginal guides in Australia
  • Exploring the Karnak Temples at sunrise, before the crowds arrive
  • Snorkeling among vibrant coral gardens and tropical fish on the Great Barrier Reef
  • Exploring historic sites and UNESCO World Heritage destinations
  • Visiting a family along the Nile for tea, conversation, and a lesson in traditional bread baking
  • Shopping a lively Cairo market before preparing a traditional Egyptian meal with local hosts
  • Sailing the Nile aboard a private dahabiya to reach quiet villages and smaller temples

The goal isn't simply to see a destination—it's to understand it.

Is There Any Biking or Walking?

Discovery Tours include walking, but not as the primary activity.

Walking is typically part of exploring historic sites, neighborhoods, and natural areas rather than being the focus of the day. Organized bike rides are not included on Discovery Tours.

What Does "Low-Impact" Mean?

Discovery Tours are designed to be active without emphasizing physical exertion.

Rather than spending large portions of each day biking or hiking, you'llparticipate in group experiences centered on history, culture, nature, the arts, and local traditions. While the itinerary is full, you'll also have free time built into your trip and are welcome to opt out of group activities if you prefer.

Guests should be comfortable standing and walking unassisted for up to 90 minutes at a time and managing occasional long travel days. Each tour page includes a Discovery Activity Chart and a "What to Expect" section with destination-specific details.

How Big Are Discovery Tour Groups?

Discovery Tours are intentionally small.

Each departure is capped at 16 guests, allowing for a more intimate experience, greater interaction with local communities, and access to places that larger groups often can't visit.

Who Leads the Tour?

Each Discovery Tour is led by one expert local Trip Leader.

Because Discovery Tours focus on shared cultural experiences rather than individual biking or walking activities, they're designed to be led by a single local expert who guides the group throughout the journey. At times additional interpreters, day guides, or experts will be brought in to enhance your understanding of a historic site or region.

What Kind of Experiences Are Included?

Every destination is different, but Discovery Tours focus on experiences centered around:

  • Historical sites
  • Natural landscapes
  • Cultural exchanges
  • The arts
  • Local enterprises

Specific activities vary by itinerary, but every journey is designed to foster meaningful people-to-people connections and authentic cultural experiences.

Are Solo Travelers Welcome?

Yes!

Discovery Tours are designed to create a welcoming small-group environment. Trip Leaders receive training in group facilitation to help integrate solo travelers into the group, and VBT | Country Walkers offers single supplements and increased availability of single-occupancy rooms.

Do I Need Visas or Vaccinations?

Requirements vary by destination.

If visas are required, they'll be outlined in your MyAccount To-Do List before departure. For vaccinations, VBT | Country Walkers recommends reviewing the latest guidance from the CDC before traveling.

Where Do VBT | Country Walkers Discovery Tours Go?

Discovery Tours visit destinations where immersive cultural experiences take center stage.

Current itineraries include:

  • Japan
  • Egypt
  • Morocco
  • Türkiye
  • Indonesia
  • India
  • Australia
  • Patagonia
  • Colombia
  • Tahiti

Each itinerary is designed around the experiences that make that destination unique—from the Nile to the Australian Outback.

How Are Discovery Tours Different from Traditional Bus Tours?

Discovery Tours prioritize small-group travel and cultural immersion.

With a maximum of 16 guests, they provide opportunities for deeper local connections and access to experiences that larger groups often can't accommodate. Where appropriate, Discovery Tours also use local transportation to help travelers experience each destination more authentically.

Why Choose a VBT | Country Walkers Discovery Tour?

If you're looking for a small-group cultural immersion trip that goes beyond traditional sightseeing, Discovery Tours offer a new way to explore the world.

Immersive, hands-on, locally led, and thoughtfully designed, they invite you to experience each destination through its people, traditions, and culture—not just its landmarks. Whether you're exploring ancient civilizations, vibrant cities, or remarkable natural landscapes, Discovery Tours are designed for travelers with active minds and curious spirits.
