Shumlin Cites 40 Years of Economic, Recreational, and Cultural Benefits to Vermont and Its Residents

MONTPELIER, VT — Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin has honored VBT Bicycling and Walking Vacations with an executive proclamation congratulating the award-winning tour operator on its 40th anniversary.

Signed by Gov. Shumlin on July 21, the proclamation cites VBT’s four decades of significant contributions to the State of Vermont in the areas of economic development, recreational activity, and cultural achievement.

“Since its establishment forty years ago, VBT has grown to offer an award-winning collection of thirty seven vacations to twenty six countries,” the Governor’s proclamation reads. “Given VBT’s economic, recreational, and cultural contributions to the Green Mountain State, it is fitting that we recognize the importance of VBT’s fortieth anniversary.”

VBT Bicycling and Walking Vacations, based in Bristol, Vermont, was recently named among the 2011 World’s Best Tour Operators by Travel + Leisure magazine. It is the second consecutive year that VBT has made the list of the world’s top 25 tour operators. VBT also has been named among the Best Adventure Travel Companies on Earth by National Geographic Adventure, and has also been ranked among the “Top Three Best Bicycle Outfitters on Earth” by the magazine two years in a row.

“We are humbled and delighted at being honored in this way by Gov. Shumlin,” Gregg Marston, President of VBT, said. “It’s a wonderful present to receive on our company’s 40th Anniversary. “We love our great state and its gracious and hospitable people. Our travelers love the discoveries they make in Vermont on our vacations here, from the scenic splendor of the mountains to the unforgettable personal encounters with our residents. We are deeply grateful.”

Founded in 1971 by Middlebury College professor, John Freidin, VBT Bicycling and Walking Vacations is celebrating its 40th Anniversary this year. The company offers 37 deluxe, small group bicycling and walking tours in 26 countries worldwide, including destinations in Europe, Costa Rica, New Zealand, Vietnam, Peru, Argentina and the U.S.A. Each trip includes all accommodations, many meals, two expert local Trip Leaders, unique sightseeing and cultural activities, and full vehicle support. Unlike other companies, VBT also includes international airfare and air fuel surcharges in its trip cost.
