Bali to Komodo Island: What to Expect on VBT's New Indonesia Discovery Tour

Komodo dragons, whale sharks, a pink sand beach all your own, and island villages few travelers ever reach, seen through the eyes of a local expedition leader.

A white sandy beach meets turquoise waters with a white boat in the foreground, set against a backdrop of rugged, brown mountains.

Ask most travelers what they know about Indonesia, and you’ll likely hear one word: Bali. But Bali is just one of more than 17,000 islands that make Indonesia the largest archipelago nation in the world. Sail east, and you’ll find a world of volcanic islands, uncrowded reefs, and remote villages where the language can change from one island to the next.

For Anastasia Louhenapessy, an expedition leader who has guided cruises through these waters since 2015, sharing that side of her country is the best part of the job.

“Most people only know about Bali or Jakarta,” she says. “We have 17,000 islands and around 700 languages. These are not dialects. They are languages. When guests learn this, they say, ‘We never thought Indonesia was that big!’”

That sense of discovery is at the heart of our Indonesia Discovery Tour with Bali & Komodo Cruise. The 12-day vacation pairs Bali’s temples and rice terraces with an eight-night cruise aboard a traditional wooden pinisi ship through Komodo National Park and the lesser-visited islands beyond.

Begin in Bali’s Living Traditions

Your journey starts on Bali, where spirituality, farming, and daily life are woven together. In the farming village of SubakGuliang, a Balinese family welcomes you to their compound for tea before you try your hand at making offerings, weaving mats, and pressing coconut oil.

The next days bring you deeper into the island’s traditions. Take part in a purification ritual and receive a blessing from a local priest at a sacred spring temple. Ride through the countryside in a vintage VW, and walk among the emerald rice terraces of Tegallalang and the UNESCO-listed Jatiluwih, where ancient irrigation systems still feed the fields. Then it’s time to fly to Labuan Bajo and step aboard your ship.

A Different Island Every Day

Once you set sail, the scenery changes almost by the hour.

“Every day we move to another island and you see different things,” Anastasia says. “You travel maybe 70 nautical miles, and you find people speaking a different language from the place before.”

Even the snorkeling sites have their own personalities. One reef sits over black volcanic sand, while the next is surrounded by white or pink sand. “Each place is literally different,” she says.

Your home for the cruise is a pinisi, the traditional wooden sailing ship of Indonesia. Many pinisi have been converted for tourism, but Anastasia is especially proud of how carefully her crew’s ships preserve the original design. “Both boats are just gorgeous,” she says. “They still look so elegant.” Later in the cruise, you’ll visit a coastal village where these boats are still built entirely by hand on the beach.

Each evening, the two Trip Leaders on board gather guests to talk about where you’ve been and where you’re headed next, from the volcanoes on the horizon to the Komodo dragons, whale sharks, and corals you’re likely to encounter the following day.

Dragons, Whale Sharks, and a Beach All Your Own

The wildlife alone makes this one of the most remarkable cruises anywhere. In Komodo National Park, local rangers lead you on a walk in search of the Komodo dragon, a species found nowhere else on Earth. In a remote bay, local fishermen and the crew help guide you into the water for a chance to swim near whale sharks, drawn to traditional fishing platforms that have long been part of life here.

Then there’sthe pink sand beach. Komodo’s famous Pink Beach draws its share of visitors, but this isn’t it. “We have our own uninhabited island with a pink sand beach,” Anastasia says. “We’re not sharing that beach with other people. It’s just us.”

Other days bring experiences that are hard to find anywhere else. Snorkel over a reef where volcanic gas bubbles rise from the sea floor. Paddle a calm crater lake on an island shaped by the 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora. Its salty water is so buoyant that floating is effortless, and a short walk leads to a viewpoint over the lake, the beach, and your ship anchored offshore.

Indonesia Through Indonesian Eyes

As memorable as the wildlife is, Anastasia says the people are what make this journey. Her company’s motto is “Indonesia through Indonesian eyes,” and every village visit is arranged in advance through local connections. Your Trip Leaders share the community’s culture and traditions the night before you go ashore, so you arrive understanding what you’re seeing.

Her favorite stop is a small hamlet at the foot of an active volcano. The government relocated its residents in the 1990s, but many felt the new island was never home, so they returned. Today, mostly elders live there. The men fish, the women weave beautiful scarves and tube skirts, and goats and buffalo wander the beach.

“I love to meet the people there,” she says. “You see how they live and how they survive.” Afterward, it’s back to the boat and straight into the water at a beautiful snorkeling spot nearby.

Food is another way into the culture. Anastasia loves introducing guests to Indonesia’s tropical fruits, especially durian, which is famous for its strong smell. “Everyone looks at me like, ‘Are you serious?’” she laughs. “So I give them a small fork. Take a bite. And guess what? In the end, they love it.”

Snorkeling for Everyone

You don’t need to be a strong swimmer to enjoy the underwater world on this cruise. Snorkeling sessions start in shallow water near the beach, with life jackets, a buoy that marks where your Trip Leader is, and a dinghy following close by.

Some of Anastasia’s proudest moments come from guests who arrived nervous about the water. “By day two or day three, they’re kicking and swimming away from me,” she says. “They go home and say, ‘I can’t wait to tell everyone I went snorkeling here!’”

And if you’d rather stay dry, that’s fine too. With two Trip Leaders on board, the group can split, with one heading out to snorkel while the other explores more of the village or the island.

On your final full day, you’ll return to Komodo National Park to snorkel a reef where coral restoration has brought back thriving fish populations, followed by a beach barbecue under the stars.

Who Will Love It Most?

When guests share their favorite moments, Anastasia says a few always rise to the top: the whale sharks, the coral restoration, the snorkeling, and the crater lake. But the real draw is the variety. In a single week, you’ll walk with Komodo dragons, swim alongside whale sharks, meet weavers and boat builders, and watch the sun set over islands most travelers never see.

The pace is relaxed, with an Easy–Moderate activity level. Most days include up to two miles of easy walking, and snorkeling and swimming are always optional.

Bali may be what brings you to Indonesia. The islands beyond are what you’ll be talking about when you get home.
