Discover North America

Embark on an adventure in your own backyard. Explore a California redwood forest, bike along a carriage road in Maine’s Acadia National Park, or trek through the gorgeous settings of Banff and Yoho National Parks. You don’t need to travel far to feel miles away.

Walking and biking in the USA and Canada reveals the breadth and variety of North America’s treasures. From snow-capped peaks in the Canadian Rockies to soft sand beaches in Florida, from the battlefields of Vicksburg to the vineyards of Napa Valley, there are endless opportunities for exploration.

Cycle the Cape Cod Rail Trail to the Cape Cod National Seashore and breathe the same fresh salt air that once greeted Portuguese settlers. Follow Mississippi’s legendary Natchez Trace, blazed by Native Americans and expanded by pioneers. Ride into America’s first city, historic St. Augustine, Florida, with a soft Atlantic breeze at your back.

In the sprawling desert landscapes of Arizona, witness the sheer beauty of Saguaro National Park. In Alberta, delight in the natural beauty and fascinating wildlife of the Canadian Rockies’ biggest treasures: Banff National Park and Lake Louise. Amidst the geological wonders, towering waterfalls, and awe-inspiring geyser basins of Yellowstone, follow scenic trails into the soaring landscapes that captivated Ansel Adams. Walking and biking in the USA and Canada is the best way to experience this incredible land we call home.

The scenery was incredible, especially at the 3 places where we stayed during the trip. The trip leaders were excellent and very attentive to the group. The additional excursions, kayaking, Butchart Gardens, a visit to a cheese farm, wine and cider tasting were a lot of fun. I would have classified the biking as moderate, the 1st 3 days were quite hilly but I did improve my cycling skills.

Canada: Vancouver Island & the Gulf Islands

This was our first trip with VBT, having taken several trips in Europe with Backroads and one self-guided trip in the U.S. with Trek. Overall, the trip was very pleasant. Vancouver Island is gorgeous and the weather in early September was perfect: sunny and cool. I suspect that is pretty typical for this trip during the summer/early autumn months that it runs. The accommodations were nice: 4-start in Sydney and Poets Cove and pushing 5-star at Oak Bay Resort in Victoria, which had a fabulous pool area overlooking the water. Three of the dinners were group dinners and 3 were on our own. That was an OK mix but explains part of the price differential vs. Backroads, which includes 5 of 6 dinners. Another factor: we had only two guides vs. the three that Backroads offers. With the exception of Pender Island, which had some steep hills, the biking could have been more varied and challenging. Much of the riding around Sydney and Victoria was on relatively flat bike paths and we retraced our course on a number of occasions. Unlike Backroads, VBT did not offer alternative routes for those who wanted to log additional mileage or tackle more difficult terrain, perhaps because there were only two guides. That's a fairly big miss that VBT should try to correct because trips of this sort typically attract bikers of varying fitness and ability levels. The sea kayaking on Pender Island was a fun and scenic diversion. The bikes provided were high quality but none included electric shifting, which is increasingly the norm for road bikes on guided tours. VBT did not provide GPS devices (everyone in our group except us used Ride with GPS on their phone). However, on request, they did provide files that were compatible with our Garmin devices. That's one place VBT beats Backroads. The latter, for whatever reason, struggled every trip with the file conversion from their Wahoo devices to our Garmin devices.
