England & Scotland: Lake District to Edinburgh
If you’re looking for a cycling trip to England and Scotland that takes you far from the maddening crowd, this is the one! With VBT’s insider access to remote corners of the British Isles, we’ll lead you over hill and dale through some of the last wilderness in England—including rides through the rugged, scenic Lake District, the remote and pristine expanse of Kielder Forest, and the sweeping vistas of the Honister Pass. Discover the ancient history of the British Isles during a stop at Hadrian’s Wall and the ancient Roman settlement of Vindolanda, as well as a memorable ride to the ancient Neolithic monument at Castlerigg Stone Circle. Pedal the charming, verdant valleys of Scotland, and enjoy the epitome of Scottish opulence during a two-night stay at a Tweed Valley hotel featuring a luxury spa, Victorian baths, sauna, steam room, and on-site distillery. Along the way, our local British trip leaders unlock the region’s best kept secrets: hidden shops, delightful restaurants, and the best place to find an authentic pint of English lager.

Positive Impact
VBT is proud to support the John Muir Trust with a donation on behalf of each guest on this tour. Conserving and protecting wild places, the John Muir Trust works throughout England and Scotland to restore the Peatlands, the wetland ecosystem in this region that prevents droughts and is nature’s most effective carbon offset technology. The UK’s wildest natural places are conserved and protected by this land management trust.

This tour was a good combination of beauty and history. Our leaders, Jago Hartwell and Daniel Guest, plus Callum Fallows (in training) provided great orientation, including historical context, and lots of cultural information about the Lakes District, the Pennines and the Scottish border. They each went out of their way to show us great courtesy and excellent service. There’s a lot of riding on this trip, more than others we’ve been on with VBT. Most of the riding was on quiet country roads and dedicated bike paths, which was great. The scenery includes lovely mountains and lakes, and lots of open pasture land crisscrossed by ancient Stone walls. We learned a lot about land management of these open rugged spaces. The accommodations were very nice and the food was varied and consistently good. I highly recommend spending an extra few days in Edinburgh, as it is a city of great history and beauty. We also passed through many small English villages, each of which had its own charm. Along the way we saw beautiful farms and many, many grazing animals.
History and Charm, with great guides.
I loved the places we saw — lots of variety and beauty and some long, awesome descents! The ride is not for beginners due to often steep terrain and extremely heavy e-bikes that are difficult to handle. Many of the activities described as ‘experiences’ were not offered, and there were few interactions with local folks compared to most VBT trips.
