Can’t speak too highly of this adventure. Already sent others on it and would love to do it again myself. Great guides, wonderful Vietnamese people, interesting scenery, easy riding, delicious and interesting food, lovely accommodations. Excellent value for the money.
Vietnam: Hanoi, Hue, Hoi An & Saigon Reviews
The absolute best bike trip ever!
Janie, Brooklyn, NY
This tour is not to be missed!
Having always wanted to visit Vietnam, we could not pass up an opportunity to visit this amazing country with VBT. The experience offered us an opportunity to experience its culture through the most memorable visits to an orphanage, various temples and markets, a rice mill…and all while on a bicycle. One of the most powerful parts of the tour was the time spent with a former Viet Cong soldier when exploring the Cu Chi tunnels, as in our group were two members who had served in the Viet Nam war.
We dined at the home of a local historian, cruised through the Mekong Delta, explored the cities of Hanoi and Saigon….and all with our delightful group and incredibly kind and knowledgeable tour guides. The Vietnamese people are warm, lovely and beyond gracious.
The hotels and included meals were also fantastic. This tour should not be missed. It is an opportunity of a lifetime.

outstanding tour great value
This is the tour of a lifetime. You get to stay in wonderful resorts that in the US would be unaffordable. The tour encompasses a large part of the country so you really get a feel for the culture and distinct attributes of each area. The food is fantastic! This tour exceeded my expectations.

This tour has great adventuresome & educational features.
This was my first VBT bike tour and it won’t be my last! The leaders were very caring & helpful. The rides had interesting educational stops along the way. The riding options were good for those who wanted to do more. The resorts were lovely and their staff mostly charming.

An eye-opening view of Vietnam
The overall itinerary gives a broad view of Vietnam – northern, central and southern areas are visited. We especially enjoyed seeing both the cities and the more rural parts of the country. Our guides made sure that we learned about Vietnam’s rich and long history, and they did not shy away from the periods of colonization and conflict that characterized too much of the 20th century here.
Throughout our trip, in the cities or biking through small farming and fishing communities, we always felt welcome. Adults and, especially, kids would invariable smile, wave, and say “Hello!” There was plenty of free time to wander by ourselves through the streets of all of the cities where we stayed; even when there wasn’t much verbal language in common, the Vietnamese made us feel completely at ease.
The perspective we were able to get as we pedaled through this beautiful country was so different from what one might see from a tour bus! On a bike, one gets to enjoy the smells of flowering crops, the warm breezes over paddy fields, the sounds that surround a small farm, and the delighted squeals of kids running out to the road to greet a bunch of Westerners wearing funny clothes!
As much as we enjoyed this trip while we were there, our appreciation of it grew afterwards as we told our friends of our Vietnam experiences.

Our most memorable trip ever!
We have traveled all over the world, and this was by far my most memorable and fun trip. The biking was relatively easy, and it was broken up by all kinds of interesting sites. Food was delicious, accommodations superb, and lots of fabulous shopping….from sik purses, to oil paintings, to wood boxes, etc….nothing was overpriced. This was truly a sensory overload trip. It was our first introduction to VBT…and we have recommended to many friends. Guides were also great, and it it hardto believe, nut the Vietnamese love Americans.
This tour was so unique...what a great cultural experience!
I went mainly for the scenery, but experienced so much more. The guides were so informative, organized, and helpful. It was wonderful to hear about the modern-day VietNam and also it’s history, especially post- American/VietNam war. We saw sites that most have only heard about in the news… it was a very somber experience to see the famed “tunnels” and the spot where Sen. McCain and others were held prisoner. The people everywhere were so friendly. Thoroughly enjoyed the food – able to try “authentic” Vietnamese food. Had a chance to have handmade silk dresses made…done and delivered to our hotel in 24 hrs! Beautiful accomodations at all locations. This was my 1st VBT experience and I enjoyed it so much, that I am now signed up for my 3rd and can’t wait to do more. Can’t beat the value! And a big bonus…I’ve formed lasting friendships with some of the people I’ve met on the VBT trips.

This bicycle tour of Vietnam and Cambodia offers the opportunity for exposure to the underbelly of the country.y.
The native guides provided a personal introduction to the culture of their countries, as experienced through the routes chosen for the bicycle touring, restaurants and special food prepared, historical sites visited and local speakers representing unique perspectives on political events. The trip stimulated a desire to dust off those historical tomes and delve more deeply into the current liturature for explanations of the rich though contradictory and complex past.

This tour offers much more than just bicycling.
I was born in 1947 and therefore faced the US military draft in 1969, because Vietnam was our enemy. I wanted to visit the country that I tried so hard not to visit in 1969. Today, Vietnam is a friend of the US, and the people of Vietnam will welcome you.
Our local VBT 30 something tour guides had parents who fought against the Americans during the war. The stories they shared with us enriched our trip far beyond the natural beauty of Vietnam.
Great experiences to be had!
Although the biking wasn’t particularly difficult, riding in the heat and against the head-winds defitely was! If you are going to do this trip you HAVE to do the post-trip extension to Cambodia!

Awesome Tour Guides!
I travelled with VBT to Vietnam in Feb 2012. I can’t say enough about how wonderful the tour leaders were. They looked after us very well – called our rooms to check on us when a traveller was ill, arranged for a late checkout at our Saigon Hotel as we had a late flight, and even followed up after our return to Canada on some purchases we had made during the trip. They truly went above and beyond my expectations!

the country, the people, the history-VBT did it justice
the highlights of the trip were the pre-trip and post-trip–Ha-long bay and Angkor Wat. the biking was well managed with safe and colorful routes. the resort hotels at Hue and Hoi-an were over the top luxury. The sole issue was the air travel routing–flying to Chicago as my gateway departure at my cost, versus from ATL, the largest airport in the US, near my Atlanta home. Made an arduous trip even more taxing(a common complaint from my fellow Vietnam riders).

Vietnam is quite possibly the most beautiful place on earth.
My Journey through Vietnam was a life changing experience of natural beauty, friendly people, facinating cultures, spectacular food and spiritual enlightenment.

Most interesting trip I've ever been on. I went back the next year!
This was a fascinating and wonderful tour with a good mix of sightseeing and biking. The hotels were beautiful and comfortable and the meals were delicious. I’ve taken multiple VBT trips and the guides are always terrific, but the Viet Nam guides were off the charts – friendly, always there for you, knowledgeable about their country, and open for new experiences. The itinerary was varied and I felt was a great sampling of Viet Nam’s sights, culture, cuisine and daily life. I went with my 20 year old daughter who loved every minute of the tour – it was a great experience for both of us.

Everything one could hope for in a tour
The accomodations were top notch, the food wonderful, tour guides outstanding, and the people of Vietnam warm and friendly. My wife and I thoughly enjoyed this country, landscape and city alike. There is simply no other way to experience the culture of this diverse country than through the back roads on a bike. For us it was the trip of a life time.
One of my best vacations ever!
This is the second VBT trip that I have been on and I can’t say enough nice things about it. Fantastic guides, lodging and cultural experience.
Learning the Vietnamese view of our shared past.
Seeing some absolutely amazing temples
Having custom-made clothing and jewelry made within 24 hours
Experiencing the organized chaos of driving in Hanoi and Saigon
Having old and young alike running from the schools and homes waving their hands and saying “hello hello” to us as we rode through their villages.
Enjoying the vast variety of local cuisine daily
Eating in the homes of local people while learning more about their history
I have traveled many places in the world and this is one trip I would really enjoy doing again.
Great job, as usual, VBT. Hope to join you on another adventure soon.
ParadoxTerry, San Diego
Everyone asked “why are you vacationing in Vietnam?”. I’ll admit it was one of those ideas that someone else came up with and I responded “Sure, I’ve never been there”. I went without a ton of preparation and study about where we’d be and what we’d see. Every day brought something new and different. We met great new friends and had fun all along the way. The pre and post trips were a fantastic addition. I only wish as I look back and try to arrange a thousand photos that the trip had been longer.
I’d recommend the trip to everyone.
SkiDeerValley, Park City, Utah
We just had the best time and would highly recommend touring with VBT. My husband was thrilled to bike ride and I was happy touring around with the van taking fabulous photos and seeing the countryside . It’s rare that we both get exactly what we want out of a vacation. We will be touring with VBT again very soon. Thanks again, M.Barrett

True Cultural Experience
Very enlightening experience in a beautiful, but developing country. Biking through rural villages revealed friendly people and the local agricultural practices. Excellent extensions to Ha Long Bay and Cambodia-both “must see” destinations!!
Wonderful introduction to this beautiful and interesting country!
Never having traveled to the far east, this trip was a great introduction to this beautiful and fascinating corner of the world. Our tour leaders were great at introducing us to many facets of the geography, the people, the religions, the culture and the cuisine! The amount and nature of the bicycling was great for a beginner to bicycle touring. My daughter (age 23) and I had a wonderful experience samplng all that Vietnam had to offer — the accomodations were all first rate — and the people friendly and helpful.
We bicycled about six out of the 10+ days. Just about right. The other days were spent in the big cities – Hanoi and Saigon. I would not want to be cycling within the cities. It was intimidating enough just walking! We were a bit pressed for time, otherwise I would have taken at least one of trips before or after the tour. It is a long trip to Vietnam and it is worth making the most out of the flights.
I am trying to figure out where I want to go next year!

Aways interesting but not enough biking
The Vietnam trip was always interesting and our guides were good. The biking was good, but could have biked more. Particularly enjoyed the dinner in Hanoi at the home of the former king’s niece and the home in HMC at the former ambassador’s residence. The history and background provided by the guides was excellent. We could have spent one day less in Hanoi and skipped the water puppet show. Hanoi was a difficult city because of the traffic and smog, but enjoyed the 5 am run around the lake with John, our guide.
Werner, Rio Verde, AZ
More regimented than the usual trip
The sights of Vietnam are terrific and the hotels and special dinners on this trip made it special. The traffic in Vietnam makes it hard to break off from the group and far too much time is spent in multi-course afternoon meals when the time would have been better spent wandering the towns or cycling more.
MandV, New York, NY, USA
great, varied experience and cultural adventure
Enjoyed the bike riding through coconut palm forests and trails and villages…. even along Highway 1! The trip leaders made the journey safe and a no brainer as we had one guiding and one bringing up the rear and the drivers stopped traffic in congested areas. The locals were warm and welcoming and the children a joy as they ran out to yell their hellos as we passed.
After being on the Thailand bike trip the week before Vietnam, however, I found the food a bit oily, deep fried and heavy compared to that which I had had. Still, it was fun to have so many offerings at each meal… loved the lemongrass drinks and Singha beer.
A great cultural experience.!
This tour covers all the highlights of Vietnam: from the busy cities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh (Saigon) to rice fields, rural villages, temples, pagodas and local markets. The 4 and 5 star accommodations were excellent.
Would also highly recommend the pre trip to Halong Bay and post trip to Cambodia.

Great Tour With Some Caveats
My husband and I decided to take this tour after reading all the positive reviews about it.
Positive Aspects of Tour
1) Our tour guides were absolutely fantastic, and couldn’t do enough for us.
2# The accommodations and meals were great. We have traveled with VBT before #Tuscany and New Zealand#, and we rate these as the best accommodations and meals out of all three tours #and we were quite pleased with our meals and accommodations on other trips#.
3) You will get a real feel for the culture- and for us this was a huge plus.
On the flip side:
1) Cycling- you will be cycling on extremely busy roads along side trucks, vans, cars and many motorbikes. This can be quite intimidating for some people. To be clear: VBT did a great job of keeping the group together #one leader in the front and one in the back), while they had their van drivers drive ahead and direct traffic at extremely busy intersections. However, unless you are great at reading directions while cycling on busy roads, you cannot easily ride ahead or split from the group.
2) Rain, Rain, Rain- VBT cannot change the weather, but we didn’t look at the details about the weather when we chose to go to Vietnam. Obviously, this is NOT their fault Vietnam has a definite rainy season, and this is when we chose to go. As a result, we rode most everyday in the rain.

This tour was absolutely amazing!
The country was absolutely breathtaking; our guides, John and Kha, were amazing; and the other people on tour with me were delightful! I couldn’t have asked for a better group or time, this being my first tour with this company. It most definitely will not be my last!
John and Kha were so thoughtful and attentive. If someone had an issue or they couldn’t ride one day, the guides were really cool about it. They wanted us to be safe and have fun on our vacation. These two men were funny, bright, and just awesome! I would totally recommend this tour to my family and friends!

Great trip, fabulous guides, very bad roads and traffic!
Great guides! Very informative and caring. Wonderful accommodations!
Suggestions; The road conditions and traffic made the trip fairly scarey. Would suggest more off road, rural rides.
Meals were terrific. Would suggest though that VBT pay for non alcoholic beverages at meals, especially water.

We’re sorry that the riding on this tour did not meet your expectations. We have worked for many years with our local team in Vietnam to hand-select the rides on this vacation. In fact, more than 87% of our guests who participated in this program in 2013 said that the cycling itinerary met their expectations. The wide majority also rated the cycling as “easy”. We will continue to review opportunities to improve our routes based on your feedback and that of others. Thank you for passing along your valuable feedback.

Intrigue in Southeast Asia
With Breathtaking landscape, friendly people, exquisite cuisine, I found Vietnam a unique travel memory for those who want an off the beaten path experience. They have a long history with no resentment against Americans visible. Children ran out of their homes as we biked by to yell “hello…what’s your name?” Other highlights include visit to Hanoi Hilton Museum where John McCain was held captive, discussion with former Vietcong soldier, bargaining with market vendors, amazing sights and sounds as we biked through villages, and many offer fantastic experiences. A trip of a lifetime that you’ll never forget.
Biker Cheryl, Dallas, TX, USA
Our Vietnam experience was eye-opening. What an amazing people, so welcoming to Americans. All looking forward, not back. I can’t imagine being able to experience this so directly if we hadn’t been cycling through the countryside. I was truly enchanted.
Our guides were like sticky rice. They were all over us to keep us safe, enthrall us with history, accommodate our every whim and keep us laughing. We miss them!

This tour is "THE WAY" to visit Vietnam!
Journey Through Vietnam was all that it was advertised to be and more. I say more for two reasons. First, our Vietnamese tour guides were well versed in the history of their country so they were able to answer all of our questions regarding the war and provide us with background history that helped us better understand their culture. Second, our tour guides have the flexibility to adjust the schedule to better meet the groups need. Knowing that we were anxious to get on the bikes and ride after the pre-trip excursion, flights were adjusted to get us to Hue earlier so we could have a longer ride that day.
This trip is THE WAY to see Vietnam as bicycling is the only way to gain access to all the small villages and markets that we got to see. A tour bus would never be able to drive on the narrow roads!! VBT took care of all the details, we were able to enjoy the experiences.
Japaga, Maine, USA
A good mix of cties and countryside with many opportunities to learn about the people.
This tour provides a good balance between visiting the main urban sites and exploring the countryside with very knowledgeable guides to help get to know the people, the customs and the way of life. The accomodations and bicycles are first class.

what a magical trip
I had never been to Asia and this was such an exciting, eye-opening trip! Vietnam is lush and beautiful w/ some of the most gentle, friendly people! The rides were fun and the frequent stops at pagodas, local farms, factories etc. was truly enlightening and educational. And I can’t say enough about how delicious the food was!

A most memorable experience!
We have taken over 10 trips with VBT and this one remains a highlight. Seeing the countryside up close, feeling safe with expert guides, and traveling with really delightful people all made this experience one of our best.

A life changing experience!
Our bike adventure in Vietnam was truly one of the best trips we have ever experienced . We loved the countryside, quiet lanes, and daily markets The opportunity to meet the people of Vietnam along our daily bike routes was priceless. Our guides willingness to share with us the real life of Vietnam was a bonus of unexpected value. If you can only take one VBT trip, take this one. You’ll never regret it.
Lbmcwilli, Northern California
Great example of VBT's attention to details
This was definitely the right mix of tour itinerary and personal time. The length and variety of the ride, the landscape scenery and learning experiences was perfect for our level of bicycling. There was a great mix of urban and rural. Because of the nature of the roads, traffic and the language barrier, the riding was more as a group and the pace was slower, however, there was so much to see and learn that the variety kept us interested. I was pleasantly surprised at how there could be such fantastic accommodations for the price. Great value! It was a great chance to see Vietnam from the inside. We saw sights you could never see from a tour bus. We met some great people in our group that almost seem like family by the end of the trip.
Johnson5, Minneapolis, MN
Simply enjoy. Be prepared for more than a bike trip.
The mist hangs over the quietly lapping water of Ha Long Bay, the mosaic emerald green fields are dotted with hunched figures in conical hats, motor bikes crowd noisily for space while carrying whole families, crates of pigs or everything they own while early morning finds the people of Hanoi squatting on small chairs slurping Pho, this is Vietnam. The masses of tangled wires on every pole, the family temples of beautifully intricate mosaics, the long thin colorful houses stacked side by side and the immaculate fields of vegetables growing around lone burial temples, this is Vietnam. But more that that, it is the people, dark eyed, dark haired, welcoming men, women and children along country roads working next to slow moving dark rivers, wizened women in the markets smiling up at you over their freshly caught fish or box of large frogs, beautiful, petite mothers holding lovely babies whose dark eyes sparkle and hold the incredible history of life and suffering which has made Vietnam what it is today…And all of this you see, you feel and you smell through the eyes of knowledgeable, local guides who want you to experience the country as they do. Biking through Vietnam is a journey that will stay in your heart and mind, having changed you and your understanding of war and peace, of beauty and contentment and of life. This is so much more than a bike trip, let go and simply take it all in.
Pamma, Bennington, VT, USA
Our leaders went out of their way to make our trip enjoyable, comfortable and safe. I was concerned about specific dietary needs and our leaders did a wonderful job of accommodating this. Biking the villages of Vietnam is a great way to feel the culture and be immersed in the life of such an amazing place. The hotels were all outstanding with impeccable service.

Blend History and Bike Riding
Live the history of Vietnam and the USA on this informative and very historical tour of this beautiful country. Bike through small villages and see amazing agriculture, architecture and welcoming people all along the way. Hear the cries of HELLO from every child and experience the country while enjoying easy bike riding. Lots of great food, happy people and more motor scooters than stars in the sky. A wonderful trip to help put history in perspective and understand global concerns and issues. Great trip.
Lolo, Chattanooga, TN, United States
I was in Vietnam in 1961 for 7 months….and this was my first return after 53 years! This was a perfect trip through and after the winter holidays. Hanoi and Halong Bay gave us an in-depth experience with parts of the northern parts [Tonkin] of Vietnam, following with 4 days in the central [Annam] region, and then following up with a great view of Saigon and the neighboring parts of the Mekong River Delta [Cochin]. The cultural, historical, scenic, political, social slices of Vietnam during this trip remaining etched in our memories—returning to remind us what a wonderful trip this was. In addition, we would pass on to those considering this trip to dip into your savings and add the pre-trip in Hanoi/Halong as well as the post-trip to Siem Reap. The experiences were “over-the-top” and you’ll never miss the extra $$$$!!
TomPNW, Seattle, WA, USA
A trip I will always remember!
This trip was much more than a bike trip — it was a learning experience, with biking. You could enjoy this trip even if your focus isn’t on the biking. The trip was packed with activities and touring, and I really feel I saw the country. The Vietnamese people were incredibly friendly and helpful, and our tour leaders and drivers were the best.

Everything about the tour was fun
Viet Nam is a country of surprises such as the Rolls Royce dealership in Hanoi. Ho must be spinning in his mausoleum. The countryside is beautiful and the people are friendly; the first word village children learns appears to be “hello”. Our guides, drivers, and helpers were everything they should be and more. The bikes were fine and the riding very easy. This trip is more about history, culture and sightseeing than testing yourself on abike.

Journey through Viet Nam
This trip gave us a real insight into the people and culture of Viet Nam. The local guides were interesting and interested in us getting to know their country. Going through little villages and markets by bike was the best way to get an honest look at the country.

Be prepared for the heat in November
Fantastic guides and accommodations. Do not pass on the Angkor Wat or Halong Bay extensions; they are highlights of the trip. Do the Vespa ride in Saigon to truly experience the traffic, street food, and nightlife. This trip was so different from the European trips I had done previously. I was amazed at the cultural differences between Cambodia and Vietnam. Bring a sweat band. It can be HOT.

Journey through time
We enjoyed our journey in Vietnam and Cambodia very much! The biking took us into the countryside to experience the every day life of the people, while the stays in cities showed us the urban life of so many today. Our guides shared many insights into their lives that enhanced our experience. Both countries are beautiful, in spite of the many conflicts they have experienced. Our guides were very attentive and we appreciated their help when I experienced difficulty with the heat. The food was delicious and plentiful and the travel arrangements worked well.

Not your average overseas bike trip
As we’d hoped, the Vietnam trip was very different from the European bike trips we’d done. The guides and support crew ensured that we saw and learned so much about the country and its history. The riding itself wasn’t particularly challenging, but it was always fun and interesting. Biking is definitely the way to see Vietnam. A great trip!
Kara S, Laguna Beach, CA, United States
First the caveats. It is very hot and humid. Also, some of the biking is unavoidably on busy roads and traffic is pretty random (I ran into a motor scooter that came out of an alley in front of me). Also be prepared for exhaust fumes. The above has nothing to do with VBT, but just about travel in Vietnam. The countryside is quite pretty and the people very friendly. Our accommodations were superior. The food I would characterize as just OK. The guides were friendly, competent and helpful.

Journey Through Vietnam
perfect journey through Vietnam highlighting many areas of cultural and historical significance for the Vietnamese people. Learned a lot about about the unforunate involvement of the Vietnam War. The Tour guides were very knowledgeable and accommodating. Shopping was fabulous; accommodations were 5 star; and food was amazing. Biking was harder than expected due to weather – rode 3 days in pouring rain, and 3 days in intense heat and humidity. Plus had a lot of sometimes lengthy van rides to access the bike routes. Bike support from drivers was exceptional.

An amazing experience
An incredible exposure to new cultures. The biking enabled us to visit small villages and market places that we would never have otherwise seen. The accommodations were first-rate, the guides were great and the entire experience was one we will never forget. Go for it!!

Amazing Trip to Vietnam
I thoroughly enjoyed my VBT trip to Vietnam. Our guides were a wealth of knowledge about the history and culture of their country. Our biking took us to rural areas with beautiful scenery and interesting agricultural practices. We were able to experience both very densely populated urban areas and the gorgeous countryside. The trip covers a large geographic area so I felt that I was able to begin to appreciate the complexity of the country. The food and accommodations were wonderful. The biking was easy and relaxing. I will never forget all the friendly children yelling “hello” as we biked past them. This is a great trip for anyone wanting to learn about Vietnam.

Amazing sights and experiences.
A friend invited me to join her to bike in Vietnam. I’m so glad that I did. A wonderful experience seeing the cities and countrysides of Vietnam. Nothing like I had imagined.

Fun, Impactful, great people, food and culture
This was our 4th bike trip and first with VBT. Also our most off the beaten path trip. Seeing Vietnam and Cambodia was amazing. We did both extensions and are very glad we did. The guides were amazing in every way. The full support team was great. In Vietnam, they had a team member at every turn on the bike routes. No route sheets were needed and they helped with traffic. What an amazing service. We saw two stunning countries. The culture, the food, the people and their spirit was amazing. The hotels were excellent. Every one of them. Never experienced better service in hotels. Here are a few suggestions:
1. The biking is casual. Not hard. Very Flat. Wear padded loose mountain bike shorts not lycra road bike shorts. You aren’t going fast enough. Be comfortable and look a bit more casual. My wife is a non-cyclist and had no problems.
2. Forget bringing pedals. I brought mine but never used them. Use their flat pedals and wear comfortable shoes.
3. Getting money was a bit of a hassle in Vietnam. We had to find a particular cash machine (Viet Commercial Bank) where our wells fargo debit cards worked. We would have brought more US cash. Bring $50 US one dollar bills. They made great tips and I wish I had had more.
4. Work with VBT early on flights. Our return flights took forever. It is possible we might have gotten more convenient flights.
5. I had noise cancelling ear phones for those long flights. A godsend.
6. We bought sim cards for our Iphones in Vietnam $15 each (guides took us to a shop) and again in Cambodia $5 at the airport. That gave us the easy ability to text our guides and each other and use Google Maps. This was a huge comfort to me. I could easily contact our guides and maps allowed me to never fear finding my way anywhere. Huge help and cheap.
7. It rained two days of riding. It was warm so not a big deal. I road in sandals without socks. That worked fine. I had a light breathable rain jacket and light rain pants. That worked fine.
8. Tell the guides you want to experience local street food where safe.
9. Have egg coffee in Hanoi. Just do it.
10. Do this trip. It was amazing.
Billrush, Minneapolis, MN, United States
A culture experience with several highlights
An up close look at the people and culture of Vietnam via a very organized tour with experienced guides and drivers. This alone made the trip worthwhile. This is not a typical VBT bicycle trip. You only bike 7 of the 12 days. Paths are narrow and rough. Route sheets are useless as your attention must be focused on the uneven road and motor bikes. Turns are directed by the drivers. THANK YOU DRIVERS. They are a big part of making this an organized and flowing trip. Driving in Vietnam is a real art.
Biking through all the quaint villages let you see life there up close and real. But the biking is work and often exhausting, not fun. The landscape is not scenic. But the people and children are incredible and love Americans. The Hotels are first class. The food is terrific. There are several highlights integrated with the cultural experience.

An amazing cultural experience
Our guides (Quinn and Kha) were outstanding. They were extremely accommodating and well-informed. Every hotel we stayed in was exquisite; each meal outstanding. Overall, we loved our trip to Vietnam. So many memories and special moments to hold onto. The post and pre trip extensions were well-done as well.
Some suggestions: try not to move around so much. We would have loved to have enjoyed/taken advantage of the accommodations more than we did, but couldn’t because we were so busy. Also, the high heat and humidity plays a factor in the need to recuperate for a while longer. Meaning, some additional down time would be nice.
Linda63, Cold Spring, NY, United States
Have never been so pampered on a bike trip-as it was very hot and humid (more so than some expected) the drivers kept us supplied with cold water, ice bags, massages, snacks, directed traffic and otherwise attended to all needs during biking portion. Always a sag option if you got too hot.
So much to see and do and we did most of it. Not enough time in some areas, would love just a week longer-but isn’t that always the case? Travel should leave you hungry for more and wanting to go back. Job accomplished!
Amazing hotels-no need to bring toiletries at all. Excellent guides. Crazy traffic in cities, not on biking portions, very well thought out routes for maximum immersion in culture with minimal traffic.

Rich in culture, excitement, and new experiences
This was an eye opening and culturely enriching experience that exceeded our expectations. We loved our exceptional trip leaders, the local people, the blend of cycling, spas, beautiful hotels, resorts, local history and local artesian shopping. Exotic fruits and fish were in abundance. We will never forget this trip. Already thinking about our next VBT trip.
Cher127, Ferrisburgh, VT, United States
We traveled through the country of Vietnam and are happy we did. Culture, scenes, scents, food, and immersion into a totally different world was eye opening. Our guides on all the extensions and full trip were awesome and linked us to the right connections for local immersion. Food takes some getting used to and though the biking was not difficult or long , the climate made it more challenging with extreme humidity and heat/sun. Resorts and lodging was top notch and we appreciated that immensely. Flights were excessive with unreasonably long layovers so that would be our biggest negative.

My recent trip to biking Vietnam was an experience of a lifetime. Guides were outstanding, extremely knowledgeable and constantly attentive to the needs of the group. Accommodations were truly 5 star.

I couldn’t have imagined a better trip
Exotic scenery that we experienced on bicycle
Wonderful food beautifully presented and prepared,
Perhaps most important of all a very cohesive group of travelers in addition to the knowledgeable and experienced guides.
They never failed to meet us at the airport and transport us to the first class hotels
When it rained, the weather never stopped us from completing our ride,
If you had an issue a van could fix a flat or transport you.
No one had a problem
BEST TRIP EVER!!!

A memorable return!
The recent trip to Vietnam and Cambodia was top-notch in every way. As a Vietnam Veteran, it was a great – and safe – way to revisit the country where I served so many years ago. First and foremost, our guides, Kha and Hien, were superb!!! They helped us to safely navigate our bikes through every twist and turn of the Vietnamese countryside and were most informative about Vietnam’s history and culture along the way. Their advance preparations and attention to detail throughout the tour resulted in a pleasurable and memorable experience for everyone. The hotels and restaurants were as advertised – the best! The post-trip extension to Siem Riep, Cambodia was spectacular! Our guide, Tra, helped us to understand the significance of the Angkor Region from an historical perspective and to better appreciate the level of effort required to construct each of the temples that we visited. Finally, my fellow travelers were an interesting and engaging group from diverse backgrounds but with a common appreciation for other cultures and ways of life. I look forward with anticipation to another VBT vacation!

Great Cultural Experience
We really enjoyed our recent VBT trip to Vietnam. The guides were wonderful and gave us a great feel for Vietnamese and Buddhist culture and history. All the hotels exceeded our expectations. We feel the cycling was secondary to the cultural experiences of the tour. None of the rides were challenging except for an optional climb over a pass into Danang. Some of the rides were through picturesque fishing or farming villages but others were not very memorable. The tour involves two flights in-country and shuttling to each ride starting point. Some of the shuttling was long – up to two hours – and we would suggest rethinking the southern rides. A highlight of the trip was riding to the Cu Chi Tunnels outside of Saigon.
We also did the extension to Siem Reap. Though there was no cycling we really enjoyed our time in Cambodia. Our guide, Pahl, was very knowledgable and informative. He gave us a good understanding of life and politics in the country. Because of his involvement in village improvement he was able to bring us into places I don’t think most tourists ever see. We met villagers and actually visited a wedding which was taking place. Of course the Buddhist temples such as Ankor Wat and Bayan were amazing. The hotel was also wonderful. We highly recommend this extension if you’re going to Vietnam.

Culture experience with scenic cycling
It was a great trip through a country that is quickly modernizing. We got to cycle with a great group and outstanding guides. The trip covered several of the most interesting areas of the country. It mixed the biking with many cultural experiences that will be long remembered.

Honeymoon to Vietnam
We chose this trip for our honeymoon and had the time of our lives. Would not have considered this trip without VBT. We called this trip “sensory overload in every good way possible.” Beautiful people, architecture & landscape with its rich history. Because it was our honeymoon, sometimes we went off and did our own thing (or merely stayed back at the beautiful resorts for the afternoon rather than take a city walking tour). Bicycling was, no doubt, the best way to see the “real Vietnam.” Cambodia was magical and it will be fascinating to see how the growing tourism industry will change the face of that country as well.

Vietnam is a must
Great views, great hotels, great food. Interesting history. Our guides, Kha and Zin, were the best of the best. Highly recommended!
an amazing overview of vietnam
the vbt trip to Vietnam was everything that I expected and more. this was my first trip to southeast asia and I didn’t know what to expect. the tour provided us with great cultural insights and a view of the entire country that showed the differences within Vietnam. our native trip leaders were terrific and shared stories from their lives that made the trip come alive. the accomodations were fantastic and the trip blended activity with some time for rest and recreation that were perfect including swimming at luxurious pools and relaxing on a beautiful beach.

An excellent adventure
This was an excellent tour. We learned a great deal about Vietnam and saw parts of the country that you could only see and visit on a bicycle. The trip was very well organized and the guides were outstanding.

Enlightening and fun
The biking was a highlight of our Vietnam trip. Fortunately, the weather cooperated overall (except 1 day) despite late Oct was tail-end of the rainy season. Several of the bikes in Hanoi were not up to par (ie, VBT should provide better bikes), though the bikes we received in Hue/ Hoi An were new. Highly recommend the post-trip extension to Cambodia to see Angkor Wat and other temples….exotic and very memorable. Great hotels and amazing tour guides.

When my husband and i signed up for Vietnam VBT trip we didn’t know what to expect and we were somewhat anxious about the bicycling and group tours. Our desire for a pleasurable trip was not only met but was exceeded beyond expectations. I wholly recommend this trip to anyone who wants to really see Vietnam!

Absolutely the best way to see Vietnam
As we rode our bikes through another tiny village, or on narrow roads surrounded by rice paddies with cows or water buffalo grazing nearby, I realized how lucky I was to be on this VBT tour. Some of the roads were too small for tour buses and we would have totally missed out on really experiencing Vietnam and its people. Children would shout “Hello” as we rode by and we’d wave back at them. They weren’t just a blur out a van window. The cities with names that I heard on the nightly news growing up, Da Nang, Cu Chi, Hanoi, Saigon became real as we toured the country. Our local guides were excellent were able to answer any questions we had. The drivers and bike techs were always there for us. I really felt pampered at our rest stops with all the fruit and snacks offered. They even cleaned my sunglasses for me!!! Our hotels and restaurants were 1st class. All in all my husband and I had a great trip. This was our second VBT tour and hopefully not our last.

Vietnam revealed in all its beautiful complexity
This trip offers a fascinating doorway to all that is Vietnam. Wonderful introduction to Vietnamese culture and history, plus an opportunity to see much of Vietnam up close and personal from north to south and its principal cities (Hanoi, Hue, DaNang, Ho Chi Minh City, etc.). The biking experience, with the excellent Vietnamese support teams, is unique and memorable (e.g., support team members stopping traffic for us and drying raindrops from our glasses). The hotels were excellent and the cuisine varied according to region and was uniformly superb.

The trip was different than the other VBT trips I’ve taken. The routes require our group to bike together most of the time and the turns require more local guides to direct us. For this reason, there wasn’t much time to stop and enjoy the local sceneries. Also, the addition of local guides needed to be tipped which added additional costs (total of 8 more local guides). I enjoyed the diverse culture (North, Central, and South Vietnam) that the tour offered.

Incredible learning and cultural experience.
Tang and Dat were phenomenal guides. I loved that one was from Hanoi and and one from Saigon so we could get both perspectives. Our guide in Cambodia was also incredible- knew exactly how long things would take and what time we should get to the temples to see sunrise/sunsets and avoid crowds. All hotels were awesome but the Sofitel in Siem Reap was the best hotel I have ever stayed in.
Extension was good
I have done several trips with VBT and this one was NOT on par. (Comments below are regarding Vietnam. The post-trip in Cambodia was wonderful.)
Biking was good.
Bikes were good.
Friendliness of Vietnamese
Great people within the group
The flight back was booked through VBT and was 38 hours. Ridiculous.
Too much. Not enough down time. I choose to take several days on my own so I could refresh. Others had nights where they ordered in and slept 12 hours.
It did not feel like a vacation. Was exhausted coming back and that was not because of jet lag.

Thank you for your review! Due to similar traveler feedback we have added an extra night in Hoi An for our 2018 itinerary to give our guests more leisure time. We will also be working with our airline partners to offer more efficient air routing options to Vietnam from the U.S.
A must take tour!
If you have never woke up in a true 5 star hotel then an hour later found yourself at a thousand year old Pagota on a lake surrounded by mountains.
If you have never heard children yelling “Hulloo” as you bike past their homes or rolled along waterways and seen Fish farms, Duck farms or men plowing their fields with water buffalo.
If you have never eaten food that both scares and excites you only to discover some of the best cuisine anywhere.
If you have never joined a group of strangers who will soon become friends and a warm, knowledgable, caring support staff taking care of your every need, but still pushing you just enough.
Then you have never taken a Journey through Vietnam with Vermont Bicycle Tours.
Great cultural immersion
VBT always does a great job of bringing its clients into the native environment of the areas they explore. I have been on several VBT trips. This one was probably the most deeply immersive, probably in part because the environment and culture are so foreign to me. Extension to Bangkok was unstructured free time. Extension to Cambodia was well guided and definitely worth it. Bikes were not up to VBT’s usual quality, but native guides and great accommodations were awesome.

Like many people who came of age during the Vietnam war, I’ve always been curious about the country, especially how it fared after the war. Are the people poor? Do they resent Americans? What is it like to live there? This bike trip — incredible in so many ways for over-the-top hotels and activities–answered my questions. Vietnam seems to be experiencing explosive growth with boundless optimism. Everywhere we biked, children yelled excited greetings and adults smiled and waved. Heartwarming. I’ve now experienced first-hand the people, sights, smells and scenery of Vietnam, which couldn’t have been equalled through the windows of a bus. Thank you VBT.

A Unique Experience
Our previous VBT trips were wonderful, but this was over the top. We visited small villages that tourists could never find, rode past ornate Buddhist temples and water buffalo, and tasted dragon fruit out of the field. Our guides were everywhere and their crew was there to be sure no turns were missed or traffic to worry about.
The hotels were fabulous and the meals terrific. This is one we will be talking about for years.

Fabulous trip to SE Asia
Our bike trip to Vietnam was everything I could have hoped for. Our guides were absolutely excellent, in their manner, in their friendliness, in sharing their vast stores of information about Vietnam, politically, historically, economically, in every way. Biking through the villages and seeing the real Vietnamese in their homes and markets, as they were living their lives and greeting us with their “Hello!” was unlike other travelers’ experiences who only saw the cities and special tourist stops. I learned so much and enjoyed the diversity of every day. Extremely well-organized and executed experience from VBT. Our lodging and meals were superior and much appreciated after our “dirty” days on the trail. I especially appreciated my surprise birthday party at the Henry Cabot Lodge home. (thanks Kha)
The pre-trip to Bangkok is highly recommended (good to be on our own in a new city and orienting ourselves Asia) and the post-trip to Cambodia was very informative and important.

Wonderful time seeing and learning about Vietnam
Great way to visit and see Vietnam. Each city was so different and having the same guide throughout was a real plus. The bike support was outstanding and recommend this trip to everyone who enjoys bicycling.
The only down side you should be prepare for is lots of tipping to the VBT staff. Also there was (maybe fix now) different suggestion from VBT that almost double the amount of tips. I wish VBT would offer as an option and all Inclusive package that included the tip. Too much time spent deciding on a tip and getting the currency to pay the tip.

Great value, plus excellent guides!
VBT came highly rated from friends and family so we knew we were in for a treat. And we were, for sure! Great value compared to other similar outfits. The guides were professional, knowledgeable, and accessible. Fellow travelers were awesome and fun to spend time with. Of course the countries we visited were beautiful and so friendly. Vietnam was awesome. We are definitely going to vacation again with VBT. No doubt.

Should have had a planned tour from VBT in Bangkok. Would have liked more cycling. Bikes in North Vietnam were inferior to other VBT trips. Enjoyed various experiences (cooking class, markets, Henry Cabot Lodge house, etc.)

Wonderful time. Tang and Quin couldn’t have been more knowledgeable and gracious. Our third VBT trip and best yet

VBT’s attention to detail in every way made our trip to Vietnam fun AND informative. Our guides were so knowledgeable about the country and biking while experiencing it all was a great way to go.
Vietnam is an fascinating country and it was great to see it by bicycle. The tour guides were very knowledgeable and went out of their way to make the trip enjoyable for everyone. Everything was incredibly well organized and all support staff were lovely.

This trip far exceeded my expectations. The insight provided by the guides Dat and Kha into the culture and history of Vietnam was exceptional. Flying to three different portions of the country provided a nice perspective. The post trip to Cambodia was also wonderful with our guide Jun. He was thoughtful in his presentations and attention to our needs. Our accommodations were exceptional. The breadth of experiences both in the Vietnam trip and the post trip to Cambodia were outstanding.

Great Experience in Vietnam
VBT did a nice job exploring different aspects of Vietnam. I think that most of the tour members felt they really got a chance to see how people live in the cities and rural areas where most of the riding took place. Even though this is a bike trip, there really was a modest level of time on the bike. I personally thought it was a good balance between biking and touring. The two tour guides were both excellent. Both were native to Vietnam and spoke very good English. They were also very attentive to the needs of the tour members. Our tour group got along extraordinarily well and that also contributed to an excellent trip. The only reason I did not rate this five stars was some minor annoyance with tipping and meals. Tipping seemed excessive and required cash be available on three separate occasions. Regarding meals, while we had a few wonderful meals, one dinner and most of the lunches were not very good and took up a lot of potential free time.
Cultural Enrichment at its Finest!
The exquisite beauty of this country is astonishing. I love cycling in every country I’ve been to. You really feel and see the local way of life. I enjoy experiencing local culture up close and with local guides.

Just as on our Peru trip, every detail was attended to. The guides were personable, knowledgeable and fun. Our like minded group of 20 got along perfectly, new friends! The itinerary and excursions were top notch. SE Asia is amazing and VBT is a great company, do this trip!
An Amazing Cultural experience
This trip was an in depth immersion into the history and culture of Vietnam that involved all the senses:
– from the incense burning in the temples to the fragrant flowers in the markets;
– from food being sold on the streets to fine Asian cuisine offered at restaurants;
– from riding in agricultural areas into the towns that surrounded them;
– from the noise of motorbikes in cities to the serenity of the resorts we stayed at;
– from the visits to war museums to the friendliness of the Vietnamese people.
I will always remember this trip as the ‘one that had me smiling whenever I was riding my bicycle’. It was an experience enhanced by guides that shared personal stories, and the ability to take the pre and post trips offered.

Really awesome way to see Vietnam. Hit the major cities on foot and bicycled through villages in the countryside.
This was the trip of a lifetime! The people, the countryside, and our guides made this an experience we shall never forget. The trip is definitely a “journey” through Vietnam, tasting the flavors of many different regions. The pre and post trips were equally exciting. We had been thinking about this trip for several years, and it was the best travel decision we have made!

Beautiful and Exotic
Biking is such a great way to visit Vietnam — out of the city and riding through the villages, seeing the natural beauty. It’s hot and humid (in the tropics, duh!) so come prepared to sweat. The guides are fantastic, very knowledgeable about their country, and totally on top of things.
