Vermont: Lake Champlain Islands, Burlington & Stowe Reviews

Vermont has a little bit of everything

My first ever VBT trip and it was wonderful! Some of the best scenery in the US and I loved exploring all the hills and valleys. I am from the midwest and I enjoyed exploring a different part of the country. The positive experience was instrumental in booking another trip.

Great Scenery

I live in Hawaii so I love to experience fall foliage. The scenery was spectacular and on the last day, we found the peak season and it was so beautiful. I kept asking the guides is it peak yet and they kept saying not quite, but on the last day I just knew it was at the peak of the fall colors. The streams with the boulders and the trees over them were so picturesque.

Also loved the inns we stayed at, the great dinners and of course the maple syrup where we could buy some directly from the family that produced them from their own trees.

The best way to see Vermont

The guides were super. The best service on a bike tour I have ever seen. The tour was excellent the accommodations and group was very very good.

The best part of the trip was the ride over the reworked railway. The view of the lakes was just unmatched.

The food was excellent and the rustic locations in Vermont made me want to move there.

VBT trips are always great!

We enjoyed everything about this trip but the weather (which even VBT cannot control.) The only problem I had was after sleeping in the lakeside room, I had some allergy challenges. (This is an old building in a damp climate, and although the room did not smell moldy, I was battling upper respiratory problems after sleeping in the room. Felt better a day or two later.) But this does not reflect on VBT. Food and people are always great! Hope to do another one soon – maybe a bike and barge in Europe.

The people, the place, it all came together perfectly.

Enjoyable, peaceful ride. The rolling hills were challenging enough, making the down hill flying fun! Attentive guides, great food and quaint lodging, helped make this an amazing trip of a lifetime. I was surprised at how quickly our group went from acquaintances to friends! I picked the right tour by choosing VBT!

Excellent choice of lodging, very personable staff, the bikes were easy to ride & the experience was unequaled!

Being a veteran of many tours, I have recommended VBT over all the rest & plan to travel again with this company & have told all my cycling friends about the care & consideration we experienced. From start to finish, VBT made the trip one to remember fondly.

Great group, great food, great views!

We had never been to Vermont before and I can not think of a better way to enjoy it than by bicycles. We toured with a great group of strangers. The Inns were so inviting, greeting us with fresh baked cookies. We really loved that our meals were served at the Inns making it very homey. We went in October so we were able to enjoy the colors.

A First Timer

Never having done a biking vacation before I decided to try the Vermont tour of the Valley and the Islands. The weather was great, the accomodations were excellent. The tour guides were there for whatever you needed. The dinners and snacks were all top notch. So, what more can one say? I’ve recommended VBT to friends and am heading off on another tour in three weeks…..

Perfect way to see magnificent fall foliage!

I had always wanted to see the magnificent fall foliage in Vermont. I started biking about 10 years ago while living in Atlanta. My husband and I talked about doing the VBT trip through Vermont during the fall, but the timing was never right. After moving to NY, I was able to do the trip with a girl friend, and it was everything I had hoped it would be….Amazing!! The quaint inns that we stayed in, the wonderful regional cuisine, and the informative guides made the leaves more gorgeous than I ever imagined possible! It was well worth the 10+ years I waited to do the trip!

Worth Doing Twice!

Picture mountain dressed in flame colors: Autumn in Vermont is eye candy! How much did I love this ride? Enough to do it twice! The colors draw you in…the ride leads you from quaint New England town to the shore of Lake Champlain…the 6th Great Lake! The inns are the definition of charming, comfortable and inviting. Fall in Vermont — don’t miss it!

It really was the trip of a lifetime!!

I absolutely loved my VBT biking experience. From the friendly booking of my trip to the tearful hugs and goodbyes, I had an absolute amazing experience. My best friend, my dad and I were all amazed and satisfied above and beyond what we expected. Every part of the trip was interesting, fun and wonderful. I have been talking about it to everyone I know for 2 years. Thank you VBT for creating such a warm, fun, and exciting trip that I’ll never forget. I am excited to travel again with VBT this September to Cape Cod/Martha’s Vineyard. I KNOW I will have a great time and my husband will experience for the first time what it feels like to be apart of the VBT family. Thank you so much. Sherry

A Vermont fall spectacular!

We had a spectacular mid-October week in the full glory of fall color season. With temperatures ranging from the high 50’s to mid 70’s, we couldn’t have asked for a nicer week.

The biking routes began very flat in the Champlain Islands, becoming more hilly in the 2nd half of the week, after we left Burlington. The biking was supplemented by delightful visits to vineyards, the Shelburne Museum, a jaunt across the lake to Ft. Ticonderoga in NY, and a very different afternoon kayaking on Lake Champlain.

Chris and Mark were wonderful guides, knowledgeable about the area, its people, and (of course!) bikes and biking.

Accommodations in lovely B&B inns were superb. Included dinners and picnic lunches were unfailingly good. And, as always, our fellow bikers were diverse, interesting, and totally gregarious.

This was our 5th trip with VBT and we’ll be back for more!

Ocean and hillsides, together on one trip

Loved the quaint shops and side excursions. The Morgan horse farm was our favorite with wonderful tour guides and the brief history lesson.
We will never forget the quaint B & B, on lake Champlaine. Meals here were delicious and the accomodations–wow!

Beautiful Northern Vermont

Few who have not visited Vermont appreciate what the landscape looks like without billboards. Vermont is unique in its dedication to preserving natural beauty. On this tour, we loved seeing the islands, ponds, woods, and small towns of the North Hero area, had a great boat trip on Lake Champlain, and ate really well. The inns were just charming. One was the Waybury Inn of Bob Newhart fame! We visited several small businesses including a soapmaker and a brewery – really fun! The cycling was not too hard and we loved every minute.

Great tour with amazing scenery and without a long, international flight

I loved this trip. I’d wanted to see the leaves change in Vermont for years and finally did so last year with VBT. our guides took care of every detail and concern and also made the trip fun. My 3rd VBT trip and certainly not my last!

The tour was an excellent and exciting experience.

This was our first bike tour. We (my wife and I) found it to be quite rewarding. We met wonderful people and the team leaders were outstanding. We still maintain contact with several of these individuals. I would recommend VBT to anyone looking for a positive biking vacation where getting away from the day to day grind is your objective and where thinking and planning your own day can be placed on hold.

Great novice trip.

For someone who had not pulled the old Schwinns out of storage for a couple of decades, the terrain plus the hybrid bikes were ideal. The fact that our leaders were so knowledgeable about the area and cycling were definite assets. The B&B accomodations were all excellent, and we gained weight even after cycling 20-35 miles a day. The countryside is beautiful beyond words, and the evenings were fun.

We loved every aspect of the tour.

It could not have been better. It provided a taste of some of Vermont’s best terrain, Inns and dining. Our guides were knowledgeable and shared history of the areas we visited. They were personable and helpful. They even prepared an outstanding, delicious and healthy lunch along the way one day. I liked the combination of biking and sight seeing. My favorite Inn was North Hero House. I loved every bit of the biking, so every day was a favorite!!

This biking vacation exceeded all our expectations. The biking in and around Lake Champlain was a delight; we enjoyed the birds, butterflies and gentle breeze. The kayaking, wine tasting and a visit to a goat cheese farm added to the total enjoyment of our biking week. Lodging in a 200 year old in was most pleasurable and the food was gourmet. The bikes, guides and other participants made this vacation one of our most memorable. We look forward to biking again with VBT.

Wow, what a trip!

The VBT Lake Champlain tour was everything we could have hoped for and more. We loved all of the rides and how well thought out they were; we loved the trip leaders for their knowledge, grace under pressure (a lot of rain) and enthusiasm. We loved the people on our trip for their fun loving attitudes and good recommendations of other tours we could take. We are looking forward to figuring out our next trip as we will definitely be back!

Beautiful scenery.

Cycling through a new area is undoubtedly the best way to capture its true essence. Our days in Vermont were filled with breathtaking rolling pastures, untamed wilderness and scenic waters. Each day’s adventure began and ended with a fantastic meal and warm hospitality.

A wonderful way to experience the Champlain Valley

This was our first VBT trip and we thoroughly enjoyed everything about it, except the last day when we had to say goodbye to our leaders, the other guests, and beautiful Vermont! The cycling was a great experience for us, and our guides were very helpful, especially, being bicycling newbies and flatlanders, we were unaccustomed to hills! Having optional rides and activities was a plus and we really enjoyed our visit to the Shelbourne Museum. Most of the roads chosen had little traffic and offered lovely views of Lake Champlain. We enjoyed our stays at the three inns and liked the fact that each was different and the meals were delicious. All in all, it was a great way to celebrate our 30th anniversary.

I would call it a luxury vacation in the great outdoors with wonderful leaders.

The vacation is one I can’t stop talking about. The exhilaration of biking through the countryside with the beautiful views on all sides! Imagine biking along Lake Champlain with the Adirondack Mountains on one side and the Green Mountains on the other. I felt like I had a private tour guide explaining the history as landscapes passed by. Snacks and words of encouragement along the way made it even better. Our accomadations were like being at home but with someone else taking the responsibility…we just had to follow. Very relaxing.

Awesome!

My buddy and I did this tour back in 1988 and it was fantastic! The people we met on the tour were awesome and mostly alot older than us (we were in our mid 20’s). We did the tour the first week of October-PEAK! Foliage Season! Breath taking, Outstanding! The food we had was most excellent. Support was top notch when my buddy blew out a groin muscle the first day-ouch! So these are the memories you keep your whole life long. Now I see they have a trip to Hungary…will shoot to do this next year!

Good trip, but they made me use their bike

I have a custom-made bicycle that I like to use for road trips. I proposed taking it on this trip and asked whether there would be any discount for not using a VBT bike. They said no to the discount, also said they would not help me with any adjustment or breakdown problems with my own bicycle. I want anyway, and used the VBT bike. It was OK, but not as good as the one that I ride at home, resulting in a fair, not great, experience.

Something for everyone

The Lake Champlain Tour has features that would appeal to everyone. The biking is lovely; there are many rolling hills, some not so rolling hills but beautiful scenery all the way. We also got to see an amazing and unusual outdoor museum, a goat farm, and a winery. We ate great meals and had terrific and varied accommodations. All in all, a fantastic experience.

A perfect trip, never felt so cared for!

We took the trip in October. The weather was a bit rainy but even that did not diminish our enjoyment. The equipment was in perfect condition, just wish I had a bike like that at home! Our guides were top notch; professional and extremely knowledgeable both about the bikes, the terrain and the history and culture of the area. They were also very, very kind and thoughtful. It was a wonderful, wonderful trip. And Vermont is “picture postcard” beautiful, even in the rain! It was my first VBT tour but definitely not my last.

Great value, beautiful scenery, knowledgeable leaders, great food and accomodations

There isn’t one thing that I could see that would have made this tour better. Nothing was overlooked–from the big (safety) to the little (a bit of candy on the bike seat each morning). Well thought out to make the most of your time with knowledgeable guides that want you to love Vermont as much as they obviously do…and they did it all well, effortlessly, and cheerfully. The accommodations and food were tops with friendly hosts that reflected the local charm. Can’t wait for the next trip!!

Breath taking!

This was our 5th VBT trip and was a great time led by two capable guides, Chip and Bill. The biking through the beautiful countryside with the challenging hills was especially meaningful to us as we had three generations of our family with us. We ranged in age from 76 to 18 and everyone thought it was an outstanding trip with great fun, beautiful accommodation and tasty food.

Beautiful vistas and wonderful rolling hills

This was our third VBT bike trip. If you love beautiful vistas at every turn, quaint country inns and lots of rolling hills….then Vermont by Lake Champlain is for you. We met great bicyling companions and terrific guides. The hills didn’t stop, but even an advanced beginner like me was able to keep up (most of the time)! It was a great thrilling ride!!

Best Bike Trip I've Ever Taken

Ok, so this is also the first bike trip I’ve ever taken as well. But based on this experience it won’t be my last with VBT. In fact, the only thing my partner and I are having trouble agreeing on is where will be our next VBT vacation. I had alway wanted to visit the Lake Champlain region, and this was the perfect way to see a good sampling of the area. The routes where well thought out, the stops along the way well spaced, the sights along the routes interesting, and the scenery magnificant. All the inns we stayed at were quaint but with up to date amenities and helpful friendly staffs. The dinners provided at the inns were all great. But most of all I have to say how great our guides were. Aside from their friendly personalities and general knowledge of the area, I can’t imagine what more they could have done for us. The bikes were always ready to go, any adjustments or repairs made on the spot, and the fact that we could always depend on their assistance anywhere along the route provided a sense of security that you don’t get when you’re riding on your own.

Wonderful riding over rolling hills, bridges and pathways surrounded by green and mountains and water vistas

My daughter and I loved the quiet roads and scenery of Vermont. Such a fun ride and we had excellent guides and friendly company with whom to share the journey. It is always fun to learn about different places from the seat of a bicycle and the comfort of the inns, food and conversations that follow at the day’s end.

A wonderful time

The tour ranges from flat rides along a causeway to sportier venues with rolling and a few extended hills. Vermont isn’t flat, but it has beautiful scenery and anyone in reasonable shape will easily manage all the rides. There is little traffic on the roads we cycled, and the cars were very polite. Our tour leaders, Chip and Bill, were great – knowledgeable, helpful and fun. The inns were all different, but the accommodations and the food were wonderful in all three. Even when the weather was not perfect, we cycled and had fun. This was our second VBT tour and again we had a fabulous time. I highly recommend VBT due to its wonderful staff and this tour in particular.

Best vacation my wife and I have ever done

The VBT Champlain Islands Tour was the first “active vacation” my wife and I have ever done but, it won’t be the last. The staff and the accommodations were excellent. I’d strongly recommend this to anyone looking for something more than the traditional sight see and sit by the pool vacation.

This was first biking trip we went on and we could not have picked a better company than VBT. The people we met were amazing and the 2 leaders, Chip and Bill, enhanced the experience with their knowledge, humor, and true interest and concern for everyone. No stone was left unturned so to speak! I personally loved that there was culture, scenery, fine dining, tours, gourmet picnics AND biking!!! I highly recommend this company and this particular tour. The guests were from many differnet geographical locations so we also learned a lot from others we met. Since we have been home i have been amazed at how many people mention they have traveled with VBT and also loved it. Hope to go again!

This was a wonderful trip with my best friends! It was so nice to see charming Vermont and learn about the rich history of this beautiful state. We loved the biking (lots of hills) and all the stops we made along the way. We loved the orchards, the farms, the museums, the kayaking, and the wineries. Vermont is not flat...but very doable

I have a 63 year old retired body which I take to the gym a few times a week to do spin and yoga classes. She is in “moderately good” (not stellar) shape and was able to do the Vermont Champlain Valley and Island easy/moderate (more moderate to me) ride! I really didn’t think she could do it but she did…thanks to the encouragement of my expert fellow bikers and leaders. Fall was at its peak and to savor the sounds, sights and smells while riding through the countryside was an unbelievable experience. The colors were vibrant, like viewing the landscapes through an yellow/orange colored filter. The snack stops and visits to places along the way broke up the riding…never was exhausted.

It’s rare that I accomplish anything on vacation but this time I did. The personal sense of accomplishment each day let me sleep well every night. I’m looking forward to more VBT tours.

I’m from Boston and wanted a hassle-free get-away as a solo traveler. It’s my third VBT trip and they have a proven track record with me now. Beautiful. Amazing. Intergalactic.

I’d been thinking about a trip with VBT for over a decade and it was well worth the wait. Lake Champlain is as beautiful as you have heard. The bikes were excellent, and the inns were comfortable. The trip leaders were knowledgeable, friendly and went out of their way to make sure I had a great experience. The lunch the trip leaders made for us at the winery was my favorite meal, and they had some stiff competition.

Each day was well organized, including turn by turn directions courtesy of a phone App. You could go at your own pace without fear of getting lost. Still, it was great to know that the ride was fully supported and that a trip leader was always at the back of the ride to ensure everyone was ok and the van available for support, repairs and snacks.

One of my favorite experiences was a tour of the USS Enterprise from the original i Star Trek (It’s near Ticonderoga). It wasn’t on the itinerary, but Chip, one of our leaders, told me about. That kind of inside information made the trip even more memorable.

VBT is a big stickler for safety. My only suggestions is that for clients who request road bikes: The current handle bar mirrors do not work for their intended purpose. The best view I could get was of my knees. VBT may want to consider mirrors that attach to the helmet for road bikes or a mirror that attaches to a different part of the handlebars. Also, one of the safety tips is not to look behind you, but that’s not practical with the current road bike mirror set up. Also, I look over my right shoulder to get back in line after I pass someone.

Great First Time Bike Trip!

This trip was a bucket list type of trip after trying to plan something like this years ago. The experience was outstanding and will be remembered for a long time. There is plenty of biking in beautiful hilly Vermont & New York with a lot of historical content. The guides were very knowledgeable with the inns and food adding to the overall experience. The highlights for me were the site of the first settler landing and Fort Ticonderoga. Biking and eating as a group added a pleasant element of comradery. An added bonus of kayaking Lake Champlain was very beautiful.

Great Week

After taking 4 VBT tours in Europe, we took the VBT Vermont: Champlain Valley & Island tour, October 2017. The 3 Inns we stayed in were historic and “neat;” the food superb; the biking was on quite roads with moderately rolling hills among trees and lakes; the tours of Fort Ticonderoga, a maple syrup farm, and a cheese production farm were good learning experiences; and Bill and Justin were excellent guides. An overall very enjoyable week. Now we look forward to our next VBT trip in 2018 to Spain.

Beautiful rides, incredible vacation

October along Lake Champlain makes for gorgeous rides which are relaxing and possible for any level of rider. Bill and Justin were terrific team leads, making a great experience even more enjoyable as they made us familiar with the area and the people. Stops include maple producers, iconic museums, historical forts and having lovely picnic lunches. Evenings together as a group result in sharing experiences we had during the day and forging new friendships. This is our second ride along Lake Champlain (previously we rode the wonderful Classic Vermont trip) and we highly recommend this ride as well. You will be glad you signed up and are sure to have a terrific vacation as you bike through covered bridges, along shorelines, take ferries and marvel at stunning scenery which provide great photo opportunities.

Wonderful vacation in the Champlain Valley

Had a wonderful time biking, sightseeing and just enjoying Northern Vermont. Our guides worked hard to make sure we were comfortable, safe on our bikes and had everything we needed. Great time and I will be traveling with VBT again!

Perfection in Paradise

As soon as I completed this tour, I wanted to do it again. VBT does not oversell it’s product. There was something for everyone, and the guides made each of us feel as if we were the most important person on the tour. We were rewarded with camaraderie, intellectual stimulation and a feeling of achievement through a self-chosen level of physical exertion. Besides, how else would one find out there is a Star Trek Museum in Ticonderoga, NY or that goats are quite friendly?

Definitely A Must Do!

Participated in this tour two weeks ago w/ some family. This was my first trip of this sort & it was awesome. Am really glad I had the chance to do it! I’m from Florida so the hills were a slight challenge but otherwise it was a lot of fun! And the tour leaders were amazing as well. It was obvious that they love what they do!
I would definitely recommend this type of adventure to anyone. If I could do it..AND stay out of the van.. 🙂

Beautiful trip and wonderful guides

I love bicycle trips, and I have taken many. I have never been to the Lake Champlain area In Vermont, and I found it exquisitely beautiful! As my scoliosis and spinal stenosis has worsened over the years, the only thing I was able to do without pain was bicycling. But recently I had an exacerbation of this problem which caused me to almost cancel this trip. On the day before the trip I decided that I would go, knowing that I would have the help of the SAG wagon, the guides, my pain medication, and ice packs. I hoped of course I would need none of these things. As it turned out I was able to do some beautiful biking and threw my head back singing as I biked along on the Beautiful roadways. However, I did have some significant pain at the end of the day after a 34 mile ride. I cannot thank the guides Skip and Bill enough for helping me, for the SAG wagon, and for this I am truly grateful. It was well worth going on the vacation as planned, and I am very, very glad that I did.
The only suggestion I might have is an improved policy regarding bringing our electric bikes. As somewhat older people, we have found that we can enjoy longer biking and have a wonderful time using the help of the electric bikes. Apparently there are some rules to how the bikes are carried, but it seems with when the batteries are removed along with the controls, that they are not that unlike any other bicycle. We had to go on a roundabout extended trip to try to get our bikes to the hotel and then meet everyone else back at the airport so that we could be transferred back to the hotel again with everyone else. When the transport arrived carrying lots of bicycles, we were a little surprised, and wondered if there wasn’t some way that perhaps our bikes could have been taken from the airport to the hotel by vbt.
The guide’s were wonderful about it, and they did help us on the return so that we were able to pick up the bikes in Bristol after we were dropped at the airport. Overall I thought it was a great trip, met wonderful people, and really appreciated the help that was given to me when I needed it. Hopefully this will improve and I will not need the benefit of all this help in the future! Thank you very much.

Beautiful Area, Fabulous Guides

It was a great trip even with some weather challenges. Beautiful time of year and well-paced itinerary for all levels of rider. Next time I will take rain gear a bit more seriously, but we only had one tough day in that condition (and, as always, it was optional). I can’t say enough about the patience and good humor of both our guides. The only suggestion I would make is to include an evening entertainment option in Burlington. Their Flynn theatre is well-known, and I’m sure there are many other worthwhile venues.
