Taking a bike trip is the best way to see everything! You can ride at your own pace, smell the fresh air, hear the birds, and stop anytime to take pictures!
Slovenia, Austria & Italy: Alpine Valleys Reviews
A perfect vacation!
Barbie, Wilmette, IL, USA
A beautiful way to tour the Julian alps, Breathtaking views, hospitable residents.
Everything about the tour was top notch. The routes, the scenery, the accomodations and the tour guides. You could not do this tour on your own as you could in some areas of France or even Italy. Beginning the tour at the top of the Alps and then a slow descent was perfect, then, being transported to the next venue via van was great. To try climbing those mountains by bike would be too daunting for most riders. Ridiing through the farmland comprised of farms averaging 2 hectgares in size gave us a feel for the lifestyle of the slovenes who live there, in addition to being a scenic treat.

This tour has a great deal of beauty and variety
The most interesting part of this trip is the three cultures (Slovenia, Italy, and Austria) that are combined in sharp contradistinction to each other. All are equally beautiful, yet the language, food, culture, and attitudes vary dramatically.
The final lodging in Austria is memorable and a great way to cap a beautiful journey.

Absolutely loved the Slovenia/Austria trip. The scenery was beautiful, accommodations excellent and the leaders were knowledgeable, helpful in every way, and just very genuinely kind..

An Excellent Introduction to VBT
This was our first VBT vacation trip as well as our first bicycle vacation. We thought the package tour was exactly as promoted. The days rides were well planned over safe pastoral and urban settings. The scenery was beautiful and the destination towns and cities interesting. Our guides (who also doubled as superb mechanics and technicians) were really excellent in a number of ways. They brought to our attention all the usual historic landmarks and facts and, in addition, they provided our tour with many of the cultural traditions and stories that make the lives of the local people fascinating and interesting. Throughout the trip our luggage and belongings were managed seamlessly and our regular snack and meal stops along the days ride were always pleasing. Going to Burgundy with VBT this Fall!

The beauty of the Julian Alps with VBT comfort and value
Fall in love with Slovenia. The people are friendly, the wine is great, and the country is amazingly beautiful. The rides were fabulous, even though they took longer than expected because of the frequent picture stops. The highlight was the stay in Velden was the amazing. The best was doing a waltz in Piazza San Marco with my love.

Wonderful places, people, food and experiences!!!
Cycling through gorgeous country I felt as though I was a participant in the Sound of Music. We had a great group and enjoyed each other as well as a few beers after cycling. The places we stayed were from palatial to quaint but all provided wonderful hospitality, comfortable beds and fantastic locations. We had a ball and can’t wait to do another VBT tour!!!!
Very country charming with lovely backdrops!
I truly love this biking trip. With having just had an ACL repaired four months prior this was a test of determination. The pictures that I was able to capture on this trip are quite awe inspiring. The locals welcome you- as they did me to their backyard for some drinks and picture taking of a wall of Clemetines. The surpirse at the lake in Villach, Austria where the hotel was the best I’ve yet to this day to encounter. Amazing that VBT can pull all this together as a package. The hillsides in Slovenia take you back and give you the sense of tranquility, but the people are robust and energetic. Although it was interesting to see a town on the water- Venizia, I would have much preferred an extra day at one of the other places we had traveled. I did like that we traveled from one spot to the next location more than I’ve been able to on other VBT trips.

Fun, fun, fun
We were the oldest couple in the group and had no problems with the tour or biking. The people are so friendly and helpful. The scenery was just beautiful. We travel a lot and this is a trip we brag about all the time.

Great scenery but needs more development
This tour was new when we went on it and it was the first time we had tried an “easy” rated tour. On the positive side, the scenery was fantastic. The route follows around the base of the Alps and winds through alpine villages and meadows. However, much of the time we were cycling on bike paths surfaced with crushed stone or gravel, and therefore had to keep our eyes down to avoid sliding out and crashing. We assumed the route was using the paths to keep it flat and therefore “easy,” but it really detracted from the trip. Because the trip was new, ( I think,) there was only one “cultural event” which was OK but did not approach the quality of those on our previous trips. The guides were wonderful as were the hotels and the food.

This tour was outstanding!
The cycling on this tour was definitely easy. The sites were varied and spectacular. The accommodations in Austria were the best I have ever experienced. The tour guides were knowledgeable and friendly. This was probably the best vacation I have ever had.

A great trip
The trip we took was absolutely great, however VBT has seen fit to change the start point to Salzburg, Austria which is overrun with tourists. Ljubljana is certainly worth two days, and starting in the city avoids a long bus ride. Our guides were very knowledgable about the area through which we cycled and the scenery was magnificent. It was perhaps the best trip we have ever taken!

Beautiful scenery, wonderful people, interesting history
I took the Slovenia trip in 2011. We lucked into fantastic weather, but even without that, the daily routes went smoothly past beautiful mountain scenery, the tour leaders were so knowledgeable and fun, and the places we stayed at were delightful. In Austria the hotel was amazing. I understand the trip has been modified since then, but I imagine most of the highlights would be similar. Slovenia, its scenery and its people, is just wonderful.
jbar, Bay Area, California
I loved this tour!
This tour offers beautiful scenery, well-planned routes, and great accomodations. When I took this tour, the first stop was Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, which was a beautiful city to explore for a day. I see that the tour now begins in Salzburg, which happens to be one of my favorite places; so you can’t go wrong in that regard. I must say the absolute highlight of this tour, for me, was the hotel in Velden, Austria. With the beautiful outdoor swimming pool right next to the lake, so you could easily jump right from one to the other, plus the fabulous spa, in addition to what was probably the most luxurious hotel room I’ve ever stayed in, I truly felt pampered! I could be tempted to do this tour again for that experience alone. Our tour leaders, as always (this was my 3rd VBT tour), were outstanding.

Don't miss this one!
The scenery on this trip is absolutely beautiful. The biking was almost entirely beside rushing rivers or lakes and so much fun. The hotels were charming – the last one spectacular. Events and food are great. We have done more than 20 biking vacations and this one ranks at the very top.
Sugar, San Antonio, Texas
This was my first VBT trip, and my first organized tour. I was always a do-it-myself traveler. VBT changed that. We were treated to an amazing experience. I met great people, had every detail of my trip perfectly planned and executed and had a beautiful riding experience. We traveled through three countries on well maintained bike paths, through alpine meadows with scenery that was absolutely beautiful. The hotels were all beautiful in different ways , ranging from authentic, quaint to five star luxury. I would highly recommend this trip!! My experience was so positive I’m off with VBT again next week!

Highlights included swimming in alpine lakes and picnic by alpine stream
Wonderful biking, good food, all the extras you expect from a VBT trip.

Slovenia is a hidden treasure. Overlooked but shouldn't be
Beautiful country, great ride and terrific people in Slovenia. Our guides were so nice we invited them back to the USA and they came.

Experience the "LOVE" in Slovenia
Pedal through Alpine valleys beneath shadows of rugged mountains. Understand the history of countries carved from the former Yugoslavia emerging into their new worlds. Dash through Italy and rounding the corner into Austria while savoring the icy-creamy taste of real Italian gelato Explore Renaissance villages and Austrian rivers, and taste local delicacies that pop with flavor. Is it any wonder we love this bike trip?
Heather, Hinckley, Ohio
An easy bike ride through spectacular scenery.
The guides were charming and knowledgeable, the hotels were excellent, the routes were well-marked, and the countryside included in the tour was spectacular. There were options for those who wanted some challenging and longer routes. The pace of the tour allowed for lots of sightseeing and stops along the way. I highly recommend this tour.

Beautiful scenery around every bend! Great guides, historical places, and gelato!
A wonderful combination of countryside and chalets in Slovenia, and sophisticated hotel in Austria. Fantastic scenery and very pleasant biking on bike paths. The guides were a delight, keeping us entertained, fed, and on the road.

THE VERY VERY BEST
I have been on many VBT trips and this was a favorite. The accomodations were outstanding, as always.
The restaurants were always accessible to our hotels and the meals that were included were typical of the terrain.
The biking was adapted to your ability and desire for riding that day.
The leaders are always one of the highlights — knowledgeable of the area and constantly aware of ones needs. Sooo considerate.
Airlines are well planned as far as connecting flights and always accomodate your needs as to seat preferences.
VBT is such an outstanding organization and I have travelled with several other Biking Companies and can say that the value and experience from start to finish is unbeatable!!!!

Wonderful easy bike riding through scenic small towns and gorgeous scenery in Austria, Slovenia and Italy.
Well organized, well led and full of beautiful bike riding. We were pleasantly suprised with gorgeous Slovenia, and loved riding along paved or gravel biketrails without any cars for most of the trip. We rode mostly along rivers, through forests, farmland, picturesque tiny towns and green pastures full of wild flowers, all with spectacular mountains close by. Our guides were friendly, knowledgeable and eager to help in every way. The daily schedule was just right and we felt pampered along the way. We appreciated the mix of some group meals and activities with plenty of opportunities to explore and eat on our own. We loved our trip and are already thinking about which VBT trip to take next year.
Suejab2, Alamo, CA, USA
It was an amazing trip. Slovenia is beautiful. Crossing from country to country without borders. The guides were great.
Damjan and Mataj contributed immensely to the trip. Their knowledge of the area and their personalities made the trip extremely enjoyable.

The tour hit all the bases, a real home run
This tour had everythng we were looking for. The trip leaders could not have been any better, just the right mix of fun and professionalism. The tour was organised so that we were able to ride from hotel to hotel on transfer days instead of taking a bus which was a really nice feature. The biking was easy as advertised, but there was enough daily mileage and there were optional rides for the people who wanted more biking. The scenery in the Julian Alps was spectacular. The accommodations were excellent; the spa at the Schloss Velden was a big hit with my wife. The food was great and the people we met were very warm and friendly. Finally, Venice was a perfect place to end an already memorable trip.
Tim728, Columbus, OH, USA
Excellent variety of landscape, from alpine valleys, scenic lakes, forest and farming to top European cities.
Most travelers know little about the republics that used to be part of Yugoslavia, but now are independent. Slovenia is on the “sunny side” of the Alps and advertises more sun than most other places. We found beautiful lakes, including Lake Bled, a tourist resort, and long alpine valleys between ranges of high mountains, mixed with farmland and forest, with spectacular views, yet with generally level biking and wonderful villages and towns. We stayed in picturesque villages, one very close to World Cup downhill and ski jump slopes. Adding parts of nearby Italy and Austria was a bonus, and the cities of Salzburg and Venice rounded out a delightful tour.
rwoodhouse, S. Calif.
If you are looking for a cycling trip that is packed with gorgeous scenery, the Sovenia, Austria, and Italy tour is the one for you. There were areas where the snow-covered mountains, the blue skies, emerald green lakes, and warm sunshine just took your breath away in its beauty. Our tour guides were rightly proud of the countries they represented and treated us to the best of the best in their homelands. We learned about new foods, new drinks, new customs, and new places. It’s appealing enough to return to that area sometime in the near future and continue exploring this beautiful part of the world. We enjoyed every day of the tour with easy cycling and delicious foods. Sharing the trip with many new cyclists also added to the excitement of each day. The hotels were in a class by themselves, not only in the services they provided but the local charm they represented.
Bikeropa, St Louis, MO, USA
Great trip and excellent leaders, biking was just right and the scenery was breathtaking
This trip hasto be one of the best biking trips we’ve ever taken. The group and our leaders were fabulous. The daily biking was just right and the support from our leaders Damjon and Samos couldn’t have been any better. Our trips went off on time and the days were filled with wonderful scenery and interesting days such as Lake Bled andthe Falkenstein hotel. Wow!!!! We’re still awed by our super time.
Breathtaking sights, panoramic vistas and scenic bike trails!
With relatives born in Slovenia & Italy, this trip was a must for me as my first VBT trip. Adding Austria to the mix made it even more spectacular. Being able to bike on scenic trails, see the countryside and beauty of each country we toured made the trip one to remember. From the first greeting by VBT, to the hotels, dinners and extra events, it was a pleasurable experience that I plan to add to with more bike tours! This is the way to tour – fresh air, exercise, new friends and new experiences!
roma47, Sandusky, OH
The trip had everything we wanted in a vacation–great lovely adventurous fellow cyclists, great bike paths, and terrific food. I’ll never forget walking out at night in a small town in Slovenia and seeing the night sky–we don’t get that kind of a view of the constellations and the Milky Way where I live. And seeing the snow-capped Alps–truly a great experience. We loved every minute!
DorieAnn, Washington, DC
The variety of sights is awesome
We enjoyed seeing everything from the villages where the
‘locals’ live, the lovliness & cleanliness of the city of Villach,
to the gorgeous Alps!
The tour guides, Matija & Samo were fantastic.
The restaurant in Villach was especially enjoyable.
The soup offerings were terrific.
Since we eat a low fat diet, including fish & chicken
would prefer more vegetable options and fresh salads

MUCH more than I expected!
This tour was sensational. Having never been to Europe, much less to Slovenia, I was apprehensive as to what the tour through Austria, Slovenia and Italy would be like.
I was expecting SOME mountain vistas, but everyday took us through exquisite alpine valleys. Every time I thought I had the “perfect” mountain landscape photo, I would ride a few miles and would be awed by another view!
The tour guides probably made this tour extra special. Matej and Damjen were fun, knowledgeable and anxious to help us enjoy the week. Great guys and a lot of fun!
From the rural settings of the village Podkoren to the 5-star accommodations at Lake Worthersee, the hotels gave us a real look at the variety of the region.
The food varied according to the region, and was delicious and plentiful. The guides made sure the rest stops had fresh fruit, water, nuts and even candy bars!!
The only complaint I had, it ended too soon!
MartyD, Tampa, FL, USA
We marveled at the beautiful scenery we had everyday of this tour.
This was our seventh VBT tour and have found everyone of them to be exactly what we want in a cycling vacation, beautiful scenery and a rewarding experience. Already we are looking forward to number eight!

3 countries in one trip!
The trip leaders made this adventure vacation fun and memorable. The people we met in the group made it even more exciting. Riding helps you get up close to sceneries and experience the regional cultures.

stunning and scenic, incredibly enjoyable cycling
If you love alpine views and quiet, enjoyable cycling, you will love this trip. The Julian Alps are breathtakingly beautiful – it often feels as if you are riding into a painting, with the blue-green spruce trees contrasted against the incredibly vertical granite peaks above. The combination of bike paths and quiet roads makes for enjoyable cycling with stunning views – mountains, rivers, and expansive valleys. And there are always some challenging extensions if you want to stand up in the saddle and do a little climbing.
Our two guides were the very best – generous, knowledgeable, kind and encouraging. They always made us feel more like visiting friends than tourists, and helped us in so many ways over the course of our trip.
An incredible scenic cycling destination for any ability – highly recommended!!

Best one yet
We have biked on 6 VBT tours. They all have been great. but this was the greatest. The hotels, the scenery, the food, the guides. Be sure to add this one to your bucket list!!!

This trip is the stuff of fairy tales!
This trip is the stuff of fairy tales! From my first glimpse of the medieval castle looming over the hauntingly beautiful Lake Bled, through the dark Slovenian forests of the Julian Alps, to the palace-like 5-star hotel in Velden at the end of the ride, it is magical. Although passing through eye-popping snow-covered crags, the biking earns its “easy” rating on mostly paved bike paths that follow streams and railroad beds. I love telling people I biked through 3 countries (Slovenia, Italy, and Austria ) in one day! A well-thought-out itinerary, lavish accommodations, cultural exchanges and exceptional guides all conspired to make an unforgettable vacation for this first-time VBT rider. I can’t wait to sign up for my next trip
Where is Slovenia?
The first question we were asked by friends is, “Where is Slovenia?” The second question was, “Why would you want to go there?” The common American perception for a former communist country like Yugoslavia is that you’ll be staying in a third world country in a concrete block hotel. That perception changes as soon as you arrive in Lake Bled. All of the travel shows we saw of this area included this picture postcard perfect lake with Slovenia’s only natural island and a 16th century church in the middle of it. The Hotel Vitranc is the three star hotel for the first two nights, but the biking and surrounding alpine ski area are definitely five stars. Any hotel patio that has a view of a World Cup skiing venue is a perfect place to relax in my book.
Sure there is more to the tour. The biking is easy and mostly off-road. The Austrian towns are pedestrian-friendly and the Schloss Velden hotel is not to be missed. Including the pre and post trips is a no-brainer. As usual, the guides are great, as are people on the tour. Heck, even the Buckeye fans were nice to us Badger fans.
The purpose of this review is to say Slovenia is not the reason to do another VBT trip. It’s the reason to do this one.
This was a great trip with plenty of opportunity for more aggressive terrain for those who wanted it. My husband and I bike at different levels so this worked well for us.
The trip leaders (Damien and Mateo) were very informative about the areas we were biking and could not have been more charming. Accomodations ranged from a simple ski resort hotel where we had free range of the whole building to an ulta-luxurious hotel. Food was delicious!
This trip is a hidden gem!
From the hamlet of Podkoren to the resort at Lake Worthersee, this trip was one serendipity after another. Beautiful scenery and absolutely charming and delightful people throughout the 3 countries.
Biking through Alpine forests and then through farms with cows on either side of the bike path just added to the overall fun of the trip. Highly recommend this trip to everyone.
Spectacular scenery was a surprise
What a fun trip this turned out to be. The guides could not have been better, hotels that ran the gamut from quaint to luxurious and scenery that was beautiful. The bike paths were great and provided a variety of options for all levels. There were many added features such as wine tasting, sing alongs and a cooking demo. This is really great tour for variety from all standpoints. Cara, Baltimore

Outstanding range of sights and experiences
We loved the variety of this tour taking us to popular and unknown areas of Austria, Slovenia and Italy. The guides were so knowledgeable in history, cuisine and culture. Our bikes were fabulous. We loved bicycling on dedicated bike paths so we could experience awesome views of the Alps, pastures and go through tunnels without mishaps. Slovenia was a highlight in learning a new country and culture. This tour took us to national parks and to two magnificent lakes. Lake Bled in Slovenia was magical.
Our tour ended with an indulgent spa experience in southeastern Austria. We highly recommend this trip!

What a trip!
Riding through the Alps, visiting alpine villages and lakes, eating local food, and most importantly, meeting the warm and friendly people who live there!
The first day was great, and each day was better than the last. The weather (cold and rainy) didn’t impact the fun we had. I think the highlight of the trip was riding through the tunnels on the bike path. Very cool!
The success of the trip was a certainly due to the efforts of our guides, Samo and Matej. They are fantastic people!

Don't miss Ljubljana!
I used to think that the best VBT trip was your first (Provence in my case) but with this trip I have been proven wrong. Cycling through small Italian, Austrian and Slovenia villages on well maintained bike paths with the Julian Alps all around you was amazing. Our guides Samo and Matej were so friendly and interesting, they shared their country’s history and culture with us and of course most of us knew little of Slovenia’s history. I loved all of our conversations. We took the post trip to Ljubljana, what a great place. The main area is for pedestrians only so it was very easy to enjoy the river and all of the restaurants and shops. The architecture and Slovenia people are wonderful, don’t miss it.
Debbiefineart, Fort Worth, TX, USA
Three countries..all unique and beautiful.
This was our seventh bike trip with VCC and VBT. Every one
exceeded our expectations which is amazing to us! We fly home and are trying to figure out how VBT can do this at such a high level of organization, quality, and personnel.

Get some heat relief!
The SAI tour was a perfect escape from the hot, hazy, humid, NJ summer! Cool alpine air, clear skies, mountain breezes! The pace and distances biked were comfortable, with plenty of opportunity to extend daily rides and challenge yourself on a few hills. Quiet roads and rail trails, charming views, even an encounter or two with local wildlife – goats on the trail, cows nodding hello. Loved the selection of hotels – not your run of the mill modern luxury chains. They had personality!
Susan56, New Jersey, USA
This tour has beautiful scenery and vistas
This tour was fantastic and very enjoyable. Our trip leaders made it that much more fun as they were very knowledgeable of the three countries including the landscapes and history.
The scenery was extraordinary with majestcic vistas and the hotels where we stayed were very nice and met all of our needs
I would highly recommend this trip and very much loved this part of the world.
VBT made it a great experience and a most wonderful trip.

Friendly people and a great mix of cultures!
This was my 5th trip with VBT and my first trip to Slovenia. Slovenia is beautiful and it’s people are so very friendly. Slovenia is a taste of Old World Europe. This trip took us to 3 countries each with it’s own culture. VBT is the way to go! Relax, exercise, beautiful scenery, wonderful food, wine and people!

The Fun of Mountains and Bike Paths
One of the best parts of this tour was being able to ride on parts of the Alpe Adria bike path with marvelous views of mountains, meadows, water falls, and smooth bike lanes! Our guides were full of details of the past and present history of this varied area as it fluxuated between Austria and Italy occupancy. It was a truly magnificent outdoor living classroom where one could imagine battles being fought. This was the second time I have done this trip and it was just as enjoyable as it was the first time – a really great way to experience nature in all its wonders.
ngc1211, Gaithersburg, MD, USA
We can’t imagine a better combination of active and leisure, scenery and cultural activities. This was our first trip with VBT but we’ve decided that we will make this our priority, annual getaway. Great food, top notch accommodations, and perfect guides. We are hooked.
Joyful25, Bremerton, WA
The route was full of beautiful scenery--mountains, rivers, pastures, small villages.
I was very impressed with the history and language knowledge of the trip leaders. They watched and listened to the riders and knew just what to say and do to keep spirits up when the weather wasn’t ideal. Their sense of humor was contagious.

tour leaders are the best!
I could hardly believe how perfect the leaders were. There were there in 1/2second if you needed them, but they never hovered. How did they do that? And they were a wealth of information on culture, custom, religion, history. I commented to fellow travelers who had been on several VBT trips (this was my first) that these must be the best guides of all. No, they said; they are all like this! And on my next trip (Holland Bike & Barge) and I found that to be true!!
We have been on 5 VBT trips and although we have enjoyed all of them tremendously, this one rose to the top. As with the Croatia VBT trip, the scenery is breathtaking. On this trip, you are biking every day in valleys surrounded by mountains. We went in May/June so there was still snow on the mountain peaks. Biking was easy with extensions for people who wanted more of a challenge. Most of the biking was on bike paths which we appreciated. Fun biking in 3 countries. Superb VBT guides as usual. Take advantage of the Ljubljana pre-trip. All in all, an unforgettable experience!
jnjo, Duluth, MN, USA
best vbt trip on offer, hands down
We have been on 5 VBT trips including Croatia, Tuscan hill towns, Burgundy and New Zealand, but Slovenia (and Italy, Austria) totally takes the prize. Gorgeous mountain scenery, three countries/cultures, cuisine…cycling on the fabulous Alpe Adria bike path…and not completely overrun with tourists. Ljubljana is charming and ending in Salzburg a delight. Do yourself a favor and do a pre-trip in Ljubljana, or go over even earlier on your own, and explore the Karst region, the Postojna cave, Predjama Castle and the Lipica stud farm, you won’t regret it. Truly no other VBT tour comes close to this one.
LizaW, Hereford, AZ
Best trip I ever had!!
I really enjoyed the exercise combined with getting to know the local culture by such friendly and helpful guides. The beauty of the countryside was spectacular! being able to stay in the urban areas, and then the farm-like settings was a nice way to learn about the countries. It was a trip where we formed personal bonds with the guides, and with new persons on the trip.
Jazmine, Livermore, California
What fun to experience three different countries, cultures, and cuisines in one trip!
How great is it in one trip to bicycle in three beautiful countries, taste delicious cuisines and learn about interesting cultures all while being spoiled by VBT! The bicycling was wonderful, the leaders informative and fun, and the accommodations most comfortable.
This was one of my favorite out of thirteen trips with VBT. I doubt that I would have ever experienced Slovenia if VBT hadn’t offered it for a trip – now it’s my new, favorite country.
Suze1, Sarasota , FL
A beautifly, scenic ride with views of the Alps everyday
This was our 12th VBT biking tour and it was way up on the top of our favorites. It was one of the most scenic of all of the VBT tours. The guides, Samo and Damjan were great as they entertained and educated us. The lodging ran up and down the scale as we stayed in a ski resort chalet in Italy, a funky hostel like hotel in Slovenia (not our favorite) and a really up scale, top of the line, hotel in Velden, Austria. I also recommend the pre and post trips in Lubjanja and Salzburg. A great adventure.

Thank you for your feedback. We use the best and most indicative hotels of each area that we visit on this tour. The Slovenia hotel is a small family-owned / operated inn located in the quaint alpine town of Podkoren. We have received many positive remarks from our past travelers regarding its authenticity and location.

Spectacular scenery -- great guides!
This is one of the best vacations I’ve ever taken. The scenery on this trip was nothing short of spectacular. Everything was flawless. I can’t wait to go on another VBT biking vacation.

A wonderful combination of culture and scenery
In 8 days we experienced the spectacular Julian Alps and were introduced to three fascinating and distinctive cultures. We learned about cooking from an Italian chef, had a lesson in Slovenian history, and took a first hand look at an organic apiary in Austria–just a few of many highlights. Traveling in Sept. and October meant we saw the region painted in glorious autumn colors. It was an unforgettable trip.

Not a biker???
I hadn’t been on a bike in over 40 years when 2 friends asked me to join them on an “easy” biking trip to Slovenia, Italy, and Austria. I trained on a 30 year old 10 speed for 5 months (and went to the gym!), but I wasn’t sure I could manage 25 or 30 miles a day. I was delighted to find the guides encouraging, the bike paths very doable, and the 6 days of biking a real joy. The scenery was gorgeous, the hotels and local side-trips were delightful, and the food was incredible. Overall, this adventure gave this 69 year old gal a new perspective. I also strongly recommend the pre and post trips.

Superlative tour leaders, itinerary,
Tour leaders were extremely helpful, fun, ready to share historical and cultural facts. They were terrific and personable. The Alpine geography and weather were pure delight, affecting all the senses with blooming trees and flowers of May. This was a trip of a lifetime.

Loved Slovenia and loved our tour guides
Most beautiful scenery. Loved the Julian Alps and our leaders Samo and Matilla were the best ever…We enjoyed all of it. DEFINITELY RECOMMEND

Most beautiful VBT trip
This was my fourth VBT trip and it was definitely the most stunning scenery. Our guides Matej and Matija, were attentive, funny, and helpful as all VBT guides seem to be. The riding was all easy unless you chose to do the moderate or “very moderate” extensions. Be sure to do the pretrial extension to Ljubljana; its a beautiful little city.

A fun-filled adventure!
Well-organized. Great tour-mates. The local leaders, Tiziana & Samo, were friendly, professional, & did all they could to provide us with an interesting cycling tour of three countries. I truly enjoyed it.

Well planned, excellent guides, beautiful landscapes. Extended stays in Slovenia and Austria added to trip’s value. Lousy Tee Shirt.

Great food, lodging, fun group and great leaders!
Slovenia is a real gem. We loved the capital city, Ljubljana, and the stroll along the river was very memorable. The alps of northern Italy and Austria were truly exceptional. A very scenic and enjoyable vacation all around!

Amazing scenery and fastenating cultures
This was our first VBT trip, and we will definitely be back. The three countries were a great contrast and our guides helped us appreciate the differences. The scenery was breathtaking and the terrain was very rideable with most on bike paths. We loved every minute.
Newlywed, Utah, United States
Just got back from this, and it exceeded my expectations. The guides were wonderful. There was so much to see while we were on the bikes and so many optional activities to do off of the bikes. Great food.

best thing that ever happened to me
Biking on these mountain paths was breathtaking, the food was delicious (especially at that last hotel in Velden), the hotels were very nice, the guides were excellent and caring and very fun, and I just had a blast overall. I’ve been telling all my friends to do this (they were asking me anyway because of the pictures I posted). I was expecting to have a good time, but I wasn’t expecting to love it this much. ALSO, I am not an intense bicyclist or anything, but I really got into it– the routes were well-planned for a mix of folks. My family came with, and they are more experienced and felt really great about the level of challenge too.

A must do VBT trip!
The Slovenia, Austria, Italy trip is well organized, generally easy cycling with a few challenging areas if you choose to do them. This area of the world rivals some of the most beautiful scenery that I’ve seen and I have traveled quite a lot. The hotels were spectacular, the food good and the variety of activities truly made this a must do trip. The guides are some of the best and the weather was quite comfortable for late July. Definitely recommended!!

3 Countries, Cultures, and Cuisine!
It is a trip about the beauty of Austria, Italy, and Slovenia. You will ride on beautiful trails that pass through green valleys, train tunnels, and majestic peaks. Dinners are appealing to the eye and palate. And, as you learn about the different cultures, music, costumes, and languages will tease your senses.

Best guides, breath-taking scenery, bountiful food
This was truly amazing trip with the best guides ever in three beautiful countries that offered such wide spectrum of cultural and culinary delights.

Well organized. Riding mainly on bike paths. Beautiful scenery. Leaders were great. Great camaraderie among the group.

Not to Be Missed
This is a trip in the Julian Alps in parts of Slovenia, Italy and Austria. The mountains are rugged and beautiful but most of the biking is on “rails to trails” so the biking grades are mostly modest – a wonderful combination. Our Slovenia guides were great and we learned a lot about the Slovenian culture. One of the best of our 10 VBT biking trips. Also we would highly recommend the Salzburg post trip during the summer Mozart festival. The hotel is very hospitable and the music and venues are the best.

The Best Ever!!! Everyone should take this trip
Our leaders were above reproach…fantastic!!! in every way. The organization, knowledge of the area, and leadership….terrific!

Slovenia, Austria & Italy
The mountains, lakes and rural settings were beautiful. Most of the biking was on paved former rail beds so the grades were gentle. Mid September meant cooler mornings but less crowds.

Great riding, scenery and cultures
I can’t imagine a better vacation. Cruising three spectacularly scenic country sides, meeting warm and friendly locals and learning their cultures is such a great experience. I’ll take another VBT tour for this kind of opportunity!

A Wonderful Trip In A Mostly Undiscovered Area
What is a ljubljana? It is not a type of sausage. It is a beautiful little city, the capital of Slovenia, a country with spectacular alpine scenery, and it is the starting point of this trip. Led by our outstanding guides, Samo and Matija, we biked through the stunning scenery of Slovenia, Austria, and Italy. The trip is mostly on paved bike trails in the valleys beneath the mountains. Even though the primary route of the trip is VBT Easy, there are optional extensions to challenge a VBT Moderate bike rider. Samo and Matija made this trip a most enjoyable experience for us, both with their personalities and with the activities included on the trip. I would highly recommend this trip to riders of all abilities.
great scenery & guides
As usual a great tour with awesome scenery & guides

Super guides, great scenery, quaint villages and towns, wonderful food, really nice places to stay, happy group.

This was our first VBT trip and it lived up to all expectations! The tour guides were very friendly, entertaining and well informed. Scenery was spectacular and accommodations were excellent. The bikes were very rider friendly. We hope this will not be our last VBT tour.

Awesome Cycling and Scenery
Imagine cycling through 3 countries in one day! Few can brag about that! The scenery of the Julian Alps was staggeringly beautiful and unexpected. The fact that you are on bike trails 80% of the ride enables you to take constant photos. One of the best cycling trips!
ElMac, San Francisco, CA, United States
Up close and personal
It was the knowledge, generousity and preparation of the guides that really made this an A plus trip. Seeing these countries by bicycle provided a much more in depth experience than we otherwise would have had.

Living in a postcard, every day!
I never considered Slovenia as a vacation destination before VBT. Best kept secret in Europe. Lubljanja is a quaint and historic city with tremendous character. VBT does a fantastic job of making the logistics (perfectly executed) background while bringing the incredible scenery, history, and culture of this area to the forefront. The pride of the Slovenian people in their country and their culture was just inspiring. The biking was mostly easy with just enough ‘rolling hills’ for an occasional challenge. The small group bonded quickly with the help of the expert trip leaders. Everyone from novice to expert was well taken care of and respected.

One of the best biking trips ever. Stunning scenery; beautiful bike paths; three different countries.
This trip was absolutely a trip of a lifetime! The most beautiful scenery I’ve ever seen, wonderful people and Amazing Guides! Being able to experience the culture, people and food of three countries while cycling and being outdoors – a wonderful trip!
Colby, Colorado, United States
The Best vacation!
This was an excellent way to see these beautiful countries! We had a wonderful experience cycling, meeting new people, learning about these countries and of course enjoying the wonderful food. Our guides were incredible and their attention to detail was amazing. We would definitely book another vacation with VBT

The best trip ever!
The Slovenia, Italy, Austria trip was amazing in every way – great tour guides, great vistas, great biking challenges, great food, great friends. Our favorite vacation ever!

Pristine part of the world.
It’s all about our Trip Leaders. They make it the grand experience it is. The daily rides, activities, events…the lush green, clear rivers lakes, the Alps, the food…the people, all would not work so perfectly without the funny, attentive, smart and perfect trip leaders. They are there for our every needs with grace and style. Always with a smile and lots of encouragement. Good job Samo and Matej and VBT!
Deb M, New Hampshire, United States
This trip was a birthday present from my mom, and my niece joined us as well. It was an amazing way to spend time together. The planning that went into the trip, both for the biking and the evening events was perfect Samo and Matej were fantastic guides. They cared very much that the trip was enjoyable for everyone in the group. They were from Ljubljana, so they were knowledgeable about the areas we visited, and very fun! The bike routes were amazing, with stops along the way for enjoying the local culture. I would highly recommend this trip. And I cannot say enough about Samo and Matej as guides. They truly cared that everyone had a successful and enjoyable vacation.

Stunning cycling adventure in the Julian Alps
The Slovenia, Italy, Austria tour was a splendid adventure and the best vacation we have had. The scenery was unmatched, our Slovenians guides were helpful, knowledgeable and enjoyable. We appreciated the daily optional extensions, loved the local cuisine, wines and cultural experiences. It was stunning in all regards. Many on our trip said it was their favorite VBT trip!
DenWin, Salt Lake City, UT, United States
Everything about this trip exceeded our expectations–the people, our wonderful guides (Ajda and Matej), the range of experiences, the hotels, the food, even the weather! We’d never been to Slovenia before. What a charming, lovely country! Highly recommend doing the pre-trip extension in Ljubljana. You rock, VBT, and we WILL be back. Thanks for an amazing experience!

The tour from day one to day six was absolutely beautiful. The Julian Alps provide a breathtaking view. Each day was more beautiful than the previous.
Shmernoff, De Pere, WI. United States
Awesome and enchanting
I have been on many great VBT trips and this is one of the best of the best. The scenery is spectacular, both majestic and pastorally scerene. The cultural events are varied and enrich the whole experience. The three different lodges are all unique and appropriate for the surroundings. The meals are unforgettable and the words to “The Sound of Music.” will start dancing across your lips as you cycle through Slovenia and Austria. It is a winner!
Udine, New Boston, NH,
magical, unique experience!
Been planning this trip for over a year and it surpassed every expectation! The countryside and quaint towns are beautiful wedged between 2 sets of alps. The cultural experiences were well thought out and quite specific to the region. Amazing scenery at every turn with Lake Bled just as magical in person as it is in pictures! Being able to ride a bike all the way around both Lake Bled and Worthersee is a treat in itself. Truly the experience of a lifetime!

Special corner of the world!
Blown away by the beauty of the land and the friendliness of the people in this special corner of the world. Can’t think of a better way to experience the culture of this unique 3 country location than on a bike & with the expert guidance of our leaders – Tiziana & Matija. HVALA, GRAZIE, DANKE!!
Excellent guides made trip very enjoyable; with notable exception of Vitranc Hotel, all accommodations were excellent. “Side” highlights were particularly fun. Was wonderful to be mostly on bike paths and not the open road!! Roadside snacks were delicious and nicely varied.

Matches my other top rated tour in Andalusia!
Well, October (2016 anyway) might be a little chilly to ride in the mornings and maybe threatening some rain. I rate my tours (12, some repeats) on a scale to give you my impression in making choices rather than top rating everything. Top choices so far at 4 stars: Andalusia, Slovenia. 3 stars: Sicily, Tuscany by the Sea, Hill Towns of Tuscany, hiking Basque Country. 2 stars: Hungary along the Danube, Loire Valley. All worth going on but you may need to choose one. Go for this tour’s pre trip; skip the Salzburg post trip– some site seeing but mainly just a large upscale outdoor shopping mall. Great guides– be careful as Matej or Matija describe the few hills encountered on the rides; their noses mysteriously grew longer while talking!

Nice combination of riding and education and experiencing the rural culture
Ethel, Albany, OR, United States
This was my first VBT tour. I am 67 years old and am a moderate recreational cyclist. Before the trip began, I was very anxious about what the experience would be like. But there was no need to worry, the tour was enjoyable way beyond my expectations. The guides, Samo and Matilja, were courteous, funny, unflappable, and smoothly handled every unexpected event. They worked seamlessly with each other. I felt instantly at ease from the first ride onward. The selection of routes took us into three countries each with their special cultural flavors and I was able to easily enjoy the diversity of each. The great accommodations, meals, extra tours around the towns, the people we interacted with, musical performance and cooking class were all positive additions to the experience. I loved my bike especially that comfortable saddle! The pouch, gearing, front and rear lamps, handlebars were all well-chosen for this type of riding. Besides the bikes, everything else worked for me. The details of organizing such a trip were handled exceptionally well, including the flight arrangements, reminders for pickups and transport, and our pre-trip extension walking tour. Good job, everyone!

Slovenia Austria Italy
All VBT trips are wonderful but this was the most unique. Three countries each with a different personality. And two guides with lots of historical knowledge and lots of enthusiasm.

A wonderful Vacation
This was our first trip with VBT but it won’t be the last. We had a great time. Bikes were in excellent condition. The views on our trip in Slovenia and Austria were outstanding. The best thing on this trip was our trip leaders, they were organized, knowledgeable and fun to be with. Overall a great time and look forward to our next trip.
Eldorado, Sacramento, CA, United States
What a wonderful trip! It was great to be able to bicycle from one country to another and experience the instant change of language and culture (and toilet type). This was our first trip with VBT, but I heard from others in our group that it was typical – terrific guides, good equipment, fun experiences, and beautiful scenery, plus interesting travel companions. The time we got to spend in Ljubljana and Salzburg before and after the biking was also worthwhile, especially the walking tour provided by one of our guides, who is a native of Ljubljana.
Grandma Carol, Oakland, CA, United States
This was an amazing trip. The leaders were very helpful, knowledgeable and anxious to give us exactly what we wanted. The pace was perfect, just enough riding each day and I loved the additional excursions. Very friendly countries, fabulous acomendations and food.
Wonderful scenery in a special part of the world
There were 19 in our group and we get together annually on a VBT tour. I think this is 18 or 19 for my wife and me. This was a very special one mainly as a result of the great scenery in this unspoiled part of the world. The people were very nice and we all did the easy parts of the tour(most of it). Anything beyond easy was at the end of a day’s ride and only involved a few of us. Our group probably averages 70 in age so we look forward to the biking but nothing very strenuous. Our guides were outstanding. Most of the accommodations were nice but you have to take into account the limited number of places in areas where we biked. I’ll take the scenery over beds any day. You will enjoy this trip guaranteed!!!

The Julian and Carnic Alps at Your Bicycle Wheel
Matija and Ajda, our guides are terrific. Leaving Ljubljana and arrive at Tarvisio, Italy in between the Julian and Canic Alps, is breathtaking. The warm-up ride right after lunch was an unexpected thrilling ride up a long steep hill, the reward which is coming back down. Once at the bottom, fabulous bike paths all the way back to the Hotel Edelhof Wellness & Spa. The Hotel is close to the center of a small town, but rooms were big, shower very small, good pressure, big towels, but a bit on the flimsy side. Staff were great, willing to get whatever you requested always with a smile. Cooking demo was really fun and good. King size beds, good ventilation, windows on both sides, so a good breeze. Beer very good, also the wine. A very relaxing and nice Hotel. The second Hotel Vitranc is very small, towels like sandpaper, good food and beer, in a very small village. We are in Slovenia and the biking for the most part was on dedicated well marked clean and very good bike paths. After lunch the extra rides were for those who wanted or needed to break up the flatness of the bike paths, hills, which were a welcome sight to many. The third and final hotel is the crown jewel. Falkensteiner Schlosshotel Velden is a fantastic place, with a spa that is unbelievable. The rooms are big, very modern, big bathroom, good shower with good pressure and great big towels. The restaurant in the hotel has very good food and beer. Our ride was around Lake Worthersee, until about the three quarter mark. At that point there was the option to challenge ourselves and some did, up three hills into scenic forests and great vistas. This last ride was terrific. This Slovenia, Italy and Austria tour is one of the best we have been on, but would not have been so if it was not for Matija and Ajda. These two guides are linguistic, mechanics, cooks, thoughtful, good riders, funny, friendly, energetic, and really nice people. Riding in these valleys beneath the incredible Alps, on very good bike paths, seeing three countries is not to be missed. May The Wind Always Be At Your Backs.

Above and beyond!
After twice touring Italy with VBT we decided to expand and try three countries. Slovenia, Austria, and Northern Italy and once again we were impressed. The leaders, the accommodations, the food and of course the rides were all first class.
GregW, California, United States
What a fantastic adventure! Three different countries and cultures in 6 days. Great mix of biking, cultural experiences, spectacular view/landscapes, and food/wine. I would do it again! And the tour leaders were awesome!

Exceptional routes in a beautiful landscape!
We loved the scenic routes along the mountains, forests and rivers as well as the wide variety of cultural activities available on this tour. An overall wonderful experience!
kimmul, Bloomfield Hills, MI
Spectacular scenery and a really fun ride
This trip offers the opportunity to bike through spectacularly beautiful scenery in parts of the world that are less traveled than places like Provence or the Loire Valley. The lakes in all three countries are gorgeous and alone are worth the ride..and then add the mountains!

Slovenia, Italy, Austria
From the moment we arrived in Ljubljana until we left Salzburg we were taken care of as always. The hotels were wonderful especially the last one, Falkensteiner Schlosshotel. Food was very good and interesting depending on the region. Our ride leaders, Samo and Metij were wonderful and met our every need. The best was biking on a bike path the entire time through 22 tunnels, 3 countries in one day and views of the Alps. Nothing could be better!
Another spectacular VBT trip. Marianne

VBT does it again!
From the delightful Ljubljana pre trip through the Salzburg post trip, and biking Slovenia, Italy, and Austria’s Julian Alps in between, VBT scored another 10 for us, our 21st bike tour and 23rd VBT trip overall. Unbeatable value, the convenience of including airfare, efficient transfers, and as always, skilled, helpful guides, keep us coming back.
Inns were a delight, food tasty, choices plentiful, including accommodating a Celiac individual, and views utterly SPECTACULAR.
Biking was exceptional, the vast majority on paved bike rail-trail. As noted the scenery was gorgeous. Despite being in the Alps, the riding was very pleasant. Uphills were very gradual, and downhills gentle and manageable. Options were available as well.
Cultural immersions were fun, often unexpected, and timely, another wonderful VBT inclusion. Guides Matija and Ijda were skilled, helpful, bike- knowledgeable, and Matija proved himself a great picnic preparer!
All in all, a highly recommended trip on all fronts.

Good for the Soul!!
This trip provides the incredible opportunity to experience the scenery, culture, food, and fresh clean air of 3 countries. The alpine beauty is breathtaking. Drink it in and life will become better!
Barbara L, Virginia, United States
The mountains with new snow, the rivers with the bluish tint from glacier melt, the robin egg blue of the lakes, and the people we cycled with and met in Slovenia, Italy and Austria made this trip a memory for a lifetime.

Everything I expected plus more
I loved everything about this trip! I went at the end of August and luckily had perfect sunny weather. The scenery was magnificent and the guides were superb. I expected beautiful scenery but didn’t expect to learn so much about the different cultures and history. There was a nice combination of group activity and free time. The ride was rated easy and was fairly easy and flat. I enjoyed all the extensions, which made the trip a little more moderate, but still left plenty of free time. I have never seen such beautiful lakes.
JudyBlueEyes, Denver, CO, United States
Maybe best trip yet!
Very rewarding trip. The pre Andy post trips were great small cities with excellent hotels and close to everything. The biking was generally easy, with a coup,e of days traveling mostly downhill on bike trails. There was a sufficient amount of challenging options on most days However.
Jim A, Minnesota, United States
This was my eighth biking trip with VBT…and each one of them has offered the beauty of the scenery and the people. This one topped all the trips! Each day we were surrounded by the deep greenery of the forests, the majestic snow capped Alps, and the meandering rivers. Each day offered a variety of vistas…while biking through 3 countries. There were a few hills to get the heart pumping and the legs working…but the trails were overall, easy. It was a just a great ride and a wonderful experience.

Cycling Gorgeous Countryside with Amazing Views
This was one of our favorite VBT cycling adventures. The cycling is easy, on mostly “rails to trails” bike paths. Very smooth, no ruts. The Julian Alps surround you, yet most of the cycling is flat. The people are very friendly, tour leaders were great. Good food and nice hotels. The countryside is pristine.
Beautiful fall scenery
My first trip with VBT and definitely will go on more!! Loved the beautiful Fall colors and safe biking in beautiful terrain.
One of our favorites
From start to finish I enjoyed the locale, the scenery , the food and friendly people. The biking was fun and our guides were great ambassadors for their area.

Discovered beautiful Slovenia
Ashamed to say I knew nothing about Slovenia. Didn’t even know where it was.
Well, It is a beautiful country with warm, friendly people. My favorite of the 3 countries visited.
The biking was relatively easy, great bikes. I am not a biker. I am more of a walker and hiker. The food was delicious and local. The guides were knowledgeable , warm. They became family.
Beautiful scenery, wonderful inns and hotels. This was definitely one of the best trips of my life. Would have never guessed I would be saying this about a biking vacation.
NAM27, North Carolina, United States
lovely area, great views and good food
Our fourth trip with VBT, having done Tuscan Hills, the Dolomites and Andalusia previously. As always, the coach air travel is no fun. We are considering arranging our own air travel with at least Economy Plus as an upgrade (currently not offered by VBT travel.) Pre-trip decompression in Ljubljana was fine, though the Allegro hotel on the third and fourth floor left us with bumped heads (slanted ceilings.) Tiziana and Matej were fabulous guides (one of the biggest perks of VBT travel is the guides.) Their love of their respective regions is inspiring, informative and entertaining. They were professional, competent, friendly and made the trip a lot of fun. We were there the first two weeks of October and were so lucky with the weather–most of September the area had rain, clouds and even snow up in the higher alps. Our weather was blue sky and a few clouds. The cycling was easy (especially compared to the Tuscan Hills with 100 degrees F temps.) The weather was 40’s in the early morning to high 60s in the afternoon even into the 70s. Layers, layers.
Rails to trails bike paths were great and so lovely to see whole families out on the weekends. As the summer season was over, nothing was ever too crowded. Not sure I would like the Werthersee/Veldon area in the summer crowds. Don’t pass up the opportunity to ride the luge at Kranjska Gora ski area.
We enjoyed all the local foods and opportunities to learn about the area’s alpine culture.
Best upgrade, for me, was the new free, “Ride with GPS” app with daily offline route maps and voice instructions on my phone. Having “Sally” letting me know I had a few miles before the next turn, then again 50 feet before turn was so helpful. I also brought along my own bike computer to follow along with the kilometer markings on the paper map. Buy a bluetooth earbud, so Sally can speak into your ear and keep your phone in your pocket. Enjoy the scenery, knowing you will not miss a turn. We also liked the newer bikes–very comfortable.
In Salzburg, use the Salzburg pass to take the bus, then ride the cablecar to the top of the mountain south of town–glorious views. Gets you up the funicular and into the fortress too. We loved Zirkelwirt restaurant in Salzburg. The Bar in the Goldern Hirsch was great. Try a glass of the Austrian red blend wine.
We had a great time!
Marcey, New Mexico
Great trip–loved where we went–beautiful scenery; where we biked–great guides–good companion riders
Only critique: it would be nice to have (much) lighter weight bikes to make it easier to go uphill
All in all this was probably (one of the ) best VBT trip (of many) I have taken
Absolutely an awesome trip!!!! We LOVED it.
It was a GREAT trip. Weather was GREAT, Scenery was Awesome, People were GREAT, Guides were Top Notch!!!!, We could not have had a Nicer Trip. We would do it again. Thank you, VBT.

Our first VBT trip couldn’t be better!
What a fabulous trip. Everything was perfect from the bikes, the food, the wonderful hotels and especially our outstanding VBT guides Samo and Matija. So glad we did the pre-trip days in Ljubljana. Biking was a great way to truly see the area. Can’t wait for our next VBT adventure!
Rich R, Menomonie, Wisconsin
Slovenia is a beautiful country, with a rich culture, now emerging as a vibrant tourist destination after becoming the first region in the former Yugoslavia to gain independence and admission to the Eurozone. Typical of our VBT experience, our local guides were superb, whether as highly competent bike leaders or as knowledgeable ambassadors for a region for which they have great and deserving pride. The bike routes were thoughtfully planned, the vistas were stunning, our group cohered around the expedition, and you really can’t beat VBT when it comes to the quality of the accommodations.

Loved the trip
Highly recommend this tour. Have toured on our own and with other companies for over 35 years and VBT is as good as it gets with the added bonus of great value. The bike paths through the Julian Alps were breathtaking.

Gentle cycling sprinkled with steep inclines
Experience a fascinating blend of Slovenian, Italian and Austrian cultures. Cycle past capped Alps, bucolic farms where cow bells echo and brilliant turquoise mountain lakes on dedicated asphalt bike paths.

Great Scenery but Some Problems
Our travel companions were very congenial, and the scenery riding through the alps, especially for the first 2/3 of the trip, was great. Our guides were hard-working and very personable. The two nights at the terrible Hotel Vitranc were inexcusable, though. The incredibly harsh towels (must be starched to be that bad) have been commented on before by others, but also the room was noisy (people talking until late at night in front of the place) and the only solution was to close the windows, which with no a/c or even a fan made it stuffy, a sleeping pill, and a talking book in my ears. Why VBT continues to use this place is unfathomable. Another couple on the trip who have traveled with VBT about 12 times said the Vitranc was the worst hotel they have ever stayed in.
Also, the quality of the food was below par overall. There was also too much down time when we would have preferred to be cycling, and as well the hybrid bikes were heavier than expected, which made it difficult or impossible for us to ride a couple of hilly add-ons. This was our first VBT experience and will likely be our last.

Best trip ever -- great people, amazing views
This was the trip of a lifetime. We had an amazing trip through one of the most beautiful landscapes you can imagine.
The routes are chosen to be very easy, but you are within sight of beautiful mountains and valleys the whole time. And since you’re biking on bike paths 99% of the time, you’re free to enjoy the landscape and your travel comrades, and to not worry about a thing.
Our guides (Ajda and Matija) were exceptional. They planned activities for us that were a lot of fun. The hotels were great, with the last place (5-stars on a beautiful Austrian lake) quite exceptional!
I will definitely recommend this trip to others, and am looking forward to my next.

another great vbt trip
We’ve traveled with VBT a number of times. My wife and I both enjoyed this trip very much with really only one major issue. the group we traveled with were fantastic; thanks to you guys for making the week so enjoyable. our guides tiziana and matej were absolutely the best guides you could hope for; always smiling, always helpful, fun to be around, knowledgable about the routes etc, and were just generally very fine people; i’m glad we had the chance to meet them, and hope to meet up with them again. the scenery on this trip, especially the middle 2 days, was spectacular, probably the best scenery we have ever had on one of our european bike trips. the trip is rated as easy; both my wife and i would rate it easy moderate…we had ebikes and were glad we did as there were occasional rolling hills that would have been challenging for us otherwise. our only issue on this trip (not unlike others) is with the hotel vitranc. multiple issues including terrible wifi, tiny tiny rooms, towels that would make sandpaper envious, subpar breakfast buffet…you get the point. vbt can do better. a few other comments for anyone still reading this…we did the pretrip and booked a day long excursion to lake bled, 2 castles, and the postojna caves on one of the free days. we both felt well worth it, especially the caves-not like anything you’ve ever seen before. and one more plug; we had one of the best meals of our life at restaurant strelec, located in the castle above Ljubljana…a little bit of a hike getting up there and a little pricy but you won’t be disappointed. To conclude we’ve never been disappointed in a VBT vacation, and we were not disappointed here. the bike routes were well thought out and of a comfortable distance. there were some hills, and we were glad we had ebikes. the lodgings were all very good except for the one mentioned above. the local people we encountered were lovely without exception. highly recommended vacation.

VBT provided great, personal service through stunningly beautiful countryside. We felt like we had a closer experience into each country and it’s people. Everything was top-notch!

perfect in every way
Great routes. Wonderful leaders Samo and Metej. The final hotel is amazing – something to look forward to. Only advice – bring your own washcloth. Most hotels don’t offer them. Only complaint – the towels at one hotel were far from soft and plush. And make sure RidewithGPS is set up correctly. It can be temperamental. I loved all the locally prepared meals. So much culture to learn about.

Gorgeous and majestic!
This was our 6th VBT trip and it was so wonderful! The guides were terrific and the scenery was breathtaking. Everywhere we looked, we were blown away by the natural beauty. Photos really don’t capture it. The rides were mostly on paved bike paths (similar to paved Rails to Trails) but there were some hills. I had recently had knee surgery so had opted to reserve an e-bike. Although the hills had a 10%+ grade, I breezed up them with the e-bike. I think those in the group who were on regular bikes made it up all the hills but it took some work and some had to stop along the way. But 90% of the trip was flat and easy, some even downhill. This is an area of the world where I envy those who live here. We even had an impromptu cooking lesson at one of our hotels – so enjoyable! We also did the pre-trip to Ljubljana and would highly recommend it – we thoroughly enjoyed that little capital city. Our dinner in Kanjska Gora was a treat of traditional Slovenian food – delish! I can’t say enough about this trip! Every time we take a VBT trip, I say it’s my favorite but this one might really be! VBT equals such great value, great scenery and experiences, great guides, fun times…always! Oh, and the e-bikes! Now I won’t be afraid of Croatia!

Beautiful countries and trails
We thoroughly loved this tour. Slovenia is stunning and the alps of Slovenia, Austria and Italy were beautiful. The daily rides were varied, easy paced, and interesting. The guides for our tour Matija and Tiziana were knowledgable, fun-loving, and engaging as well as wonderful ambassadors for their respective countries.

The Julian Alps are impressive
We chose this trip to bike in the mountains. Sometimes they were close as we rode through their canyons and tunnels. Sometimes they were back a bit as we rode through their wide valleys. But their majesty was always present. Samo and Matija, our leaders, worked very hard to give us a good experience. The bikes were always ready. Snacks were always available. Add on experiences were delightful and educational such as the trip to the fortified city of Venzone where a baker lives who holds the record for the largest tiramisu ever made. We also biked to an alpine museum where we learned about mountaineering. Then there was the Slovenian museum which gave us an idea of life on a farm before there was electricity. One lunch took place on a farm where everything we ate was produced or made on the farm. We also biked around two lakes and hiked around another. We had a group of strong bikers including an 80 year old grandmother who was present with her two daughters and grand children.

Spectacular easy mountain bike riding
This was my third VBT tour and I brought 14 friends with me and my wife. The venue is outstanding with many down valley rides in a glorious mountains setting. The guides were outstanding with a passion for sharing there countries. The cultural events were the best I experienced. Highly recommend the tour.

This was my 16th VBT trip and I think it is now my favorite! Every trip has been a wonderful adventure, but Slovenia was special. The pre-trip to Ljubljana is a must do. This small city is charming, walkable and full of sidewalk cafes. VBT includes a walking tour of the city on the first day there which was a great orientation. From the first day to the last, riding through the Alps of Slovenia, Italy and Austria was incredible. Having the route direction on GPS and riding an E-bike let me enjoy the rides as never before. The hotels ranged in luxury but were all interesting. Our guides were absolutely the best we have ever had- and that says a lot! It really was wonderful exploring this little known part of Europe- before I left, people kept saying where is Slovenia and why are you going there. I am so glad we visited a part of Europe that is still unspoiled and relatively unknown. I did not do the post-trip in Salzburg but 1/2 day was enough in that city for me- it was overcrowded and commercial.

Great scenery, Great leaders
I signed up for the tour as a single and went home with 15 friends. The organization was very well done. The leaders were excellent. The accommodations were fine to excellent.

The most beautiful scenery!
Another excellent VBT vacation from beginning to end. The views on this ride are stunning, the biking is easy enough and you get to ride on some really great trails. Some of the trails were old rail lines that are now paved and take you through old tunnels. Our guides Ajda & Matej were absolutely fantastic and so much fun to be around and interact with. I can’t tell you my favorite part because it was all so amazing! I highly recommend this trip.

I loved everything about this trip. The scenery in the Alps was breathtaking. The ride through the tunnels was fun and unique. Lovely biking on beautiful paved bike paths that cut through the countryside. Many days of “easy” biking (although if you want more, the guides can provide that, too.) Even the days of “liquid sunshine” were exhilarating. The lakes and streams were crystal clear and the most beautiful aqua blue. Guides Ajda and Matija were smart, fun, hard-working, and a joy to be around. Fellow travelers were wonderful. Enjoyed the local foods and flavors, including authentic pasta from Italian chef, wine tasting, as well as learning more about Slovenian traditions and the ever-popular “hat game.” The accommodations in Velden were over the top. In every way, it was the trip of a lifetime.

Despite less than perfect weather (only two sunny days while bicycling, three days of rain and one day that looked like it would rain), I had a wonderful time on this trip. I cannot say enough about how awesome our guides, Ajda and Matija, were. They were fluent in four languages we needed on the trip, graciously provided all the support that we needed, came up with alternative plans when the weather demanded it, provided cultural insight, and were just plain fun. After the first two days, I didn’t get to see the high mountain views I had dreamed of, but the countryside was still beautiful and with all of the other activities I still had a wonderful time.

Biking through Italy, Slovenia and Austria was one of the greatest experiences. Seeing the countries from the bike paths and small villages was amazing. I do not have words to clearly express how amazing and spectacular this trip was.

A Top 3 Must Do!
This was our 10-11th VBT bike trip with a group of college friends, all in our 70’s. This trek is in our top 3 for sure. It was a great, easy ride, outstanding scenery and route, wonderful hotels and food, and outstanding guides. We were fortunate to have terrific weather. Cultural experiences also terrific. Enough e-bikes for all always helps! Getting ready for our next VBT adventure in Quebec, already filled for Sept 2019! We are the “EFM Group”.

So much fun!
An excellent trip, fun, a nice mix of physical activity and socializing. Would recommend it highly. Beautiful country, scenery and people.

Fantastic trip with views galore
This trip was our third and is a class above the other two which we thoroughly enjoyed. The views are spectacular with our group having to constantly stop for photo ops. There was plenty of good food, our guides were outstanding, and the final trip stop at Worthersee is at one of the best hotels in Europe. VBT has put together a great itinerary with plenty of opportunities for optional rides. Slovenia is a real jewel and the ski flying center cannot be missed!

Don't Miss Slovenia, Austria and Italy
This tour has stunning alpine scenery without very few climbs.
A Beautiful Adventure
Our trip was just wonderful. The scenery was the star of the show, but it was enriched by the cultural experiences, meals, thoughtful guides, little “surprises,” and congenial fellow travelers.

Lived up to the hype
I had never gone on a biking vacation nor had I ever been to Europe. After reviewing many possibilities I was taken by the promo photos for Slovina, Austria and Italian alps; photos submitted by previous clients empressed me every bit as much. Yet when all is said and done photos don’t do it justice. What an amazing area of the world. Italy is a well known area of splendor but Slovenia would never have been on my radar. I loved Slovenia… it’s people and it’s culture and it’s beauty.

Fabulous trip and a great value
This was my first time out of country and it couldn’t have been any better. VBT had amazing guides and the trip was planned out perfectly. I recommend this trip to everyone.
Can I give this tour SIX stars?
I am searching my vocabulary to see if I can find words too grand to describe this bike tour. Nope. Not possible. Absolutely everything about this trip was exactly what I wanted in a bike tour. . . and more! I could go through the itinerary day by day and be specific about how delightful (and sometimes quirky) the accommodations were; how the rides — mostly on bike paths — were the perfect length to burn off the calories we consumed at all the amazing meals; how the guides were expert yet approachable, well-prepared yet accommodating to our group’s preferences, highly technical yet playful; how the tour formed the perfect balance between active and cultural. All of these statements are true, but all are dwarfed by the sheer extraordinary beauty of this region and the rides that were created for us. This was my very first tour with VBT, and it exceeded every single one of my expectations. I recommend this tour most highly, and I can hardly wait to take another to see if all of these tours can be this magnificent!

Had the best time!!
VBT trip number 8 for us and this was easily one of the best. The guides, Samo and Adja, were fabulous. They were so well informed as to the history of the area and worked so hard to spoil us. The pre trip in Ljubljana was great. The picture perfect biking and variety of trails plus all the cultural experiences… made this trip a winner. Looking back, we really did have a chance to contrast the three countries. Italy, Slovenia and Austria. Three hotels, three histories, three cultures, three cuisines, and three personalities. So we recommend the trip. Go for it. Great fun!!

Beautiful tour through the Alps on the Alpe Adria
Each time I go on a VBT tour…and this was my 5th, I say it’s the best ever and this time was no different. We rode through many postcard views during our week with our group of 16 riders and fantastic guides Samo and Tiziana (attentive and funny). We went in early July and weather.com forecasted rain many of the days but was wrong 90% of the time…so bring rain-gear for the other 10% because the rain is cold. The bikes were like-new and the rides were easy for the most part, but there were some fun challenge climbs that most people could do. My favorite day of riding was day 2 through the train tunnels on the Alpe-Adria-Trail…each time you exit a tunnel, you see a new postcard! Highly recommended.

All-around outstanding trip!
The entire trip exceeded all expectations- the group leaders, locations, cultural immersion, and the rides themselves were absolutely outstanding! Could not have asked for a better first trip with VBT. Would highly, highly recommend to anyone!

Loved this vacation!
We joined our friends who had been on previous VBT trips even though we aren’t avid bikers. The trip was so amazing! We rented ebikes. It wasn’t difficult to use and was very helpful on those paths we needed a little extra help on. The scenery was beautiful, the guides were fantastic and I’m really happy we went on this active and interesting trip!

The absolute best part of this trip was the PAVED/DEDICATED bike paths. The 3 countries have embraced the “rails to trails” program. The biking on these paths is spectacular. The tour leaders were amazing. Everything about this tour is great, so great I am considering doing it again.
