A very good trip. Next to our Ireland bike trip, this was the best. Guides were the best. Most of the hiking was easy, but the final day was great but a challenge.
Hotels were very good and the food was excellent.

Machu Picchu is an obvious highlight of this trip, but our time spent in the Sacred Valley was also exceptional. Our guides made sure we understood the historical significance of each site and village. They were also fun-loving fellows who added their vivacious personalities to our bus rides and communal meals. I loved the unique day spent with the Cuyuni community and marveled to hear our guide speak Quechua with the people there. The accommodations and included meals were first rate.

VBT did an outstanding job of organizing, coordinating and leading the Machu Picchu walking tour. They allowed plenty of time and options to hike adjacent areas around Machu Picchu if you are up to a little more high altitude hiking. The food and accommidations were excellent and the leaders outstannding.

I had not traveled with VBT since the 1990’s and this experience lived up to and exceeded all my expectations.
Each day was filled with memorable scenery, history lessons and challenges to meet. At 71, and a “new” walker, I was grateful for the moral support of the guides and the tour members. Meeting the challenges presented, was the most exhilarating and fulfilling experience!

VBT’s tour of Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley far exceeded my expectations. Everything was wonderful. The accommodations were excellent. Each day was well planned. The trip leaders gave us the opportunity to have a deeper perspective of the culture instead of just being “tourist”.

Wow. What an amazing place. Fascinating people, places and history. Tour guides were top-notch, as were accommodations. And as always, VBT brought the whole thing together without a hitch. Pre- and post-trips (Lima/Amazon) were excellent as well. This is a place we never would have gone to on our own. Highly recommend it.

Soaring heights, breathtaking views, interactions with the friendly locals and great guides made this trip truly memorable. Be in good shape as the hikes can be easy to difficult, especially at altitudes of 7000-14000 ft. Wear good hiking boots and use the walking sticks. They’re great for balance and reduce the effort by 30%. Don’t go if you have significant issues with heights, altitude or dizziness (balance). Our group age range was 40s to 70s and some didn’t look in the best shape, but everyone did well.

We hit the ground running on this tour as there is a lot to see in the relatively compact area known as the Sacred Valley. This is not a trip for rest and relaxation as the days start pretty early and we were on the go most of the day. However, there is time to rest on the bus while being shuttled between various locales. The amount and quality of the archeological sites is amazing and I was fascinated by the ingenuity that the Inca people possessed with regards to building structures and cultivating the land. The guides speak perfect English and were extremely knowledgable about the Inca history and culture, sometimes it was hard to take it all in. The hike to Machu Picchu was the best part of the trip for me especially when I arrived at the Sun Gate and took in my first panoramic view of the place; it is something I will never forget. I don’t like getting up early but it was definitely worth it to see the sunrise over Machu Picchu on the first morning in Aguas Caliente. Also the day spent hiking with the Cuyuni Community at almost 14,000 feet elevation was awesome and it was really interesting to meet a community so untouched by modern civilization and still possessing skills passed on for generations such as dyeing and weaving there own clothing. You are going downhill the whole time so no worries about getting winded. The picnic lunch on the last full day of the tour that was scrumptious. We had plenty of chances to buy souvenirs as we visited a lot of markets, however, the natives can sometimes be a little pushy and you need to be careful as to what you buy.

I was joined on this trip by four family members and our thoughts are unanimous, this is one of life’s most amazing journeys and should not be missed. It is difficult to describe the feeling of walking along the same paths as the ancient Inca, glimpsing pieces of their existence and sometimes having the opportunity to experience pieces of it ourselves (who wouldn’t want to try alpaca). I often felt as though we were the only group of travelers wandering the ancient ruins, as somehow VBT managed to create an itinerary without madding hoards of fellow travelers. I loved the picnic, passing each dish family style down the long table, laughing with the tour guides and our new found friends. Machu Picchu did not disappoint, and as we walked the final steps to the sun gate there was nothing left to do but let out a shout of joy.

The tour leaders made sure every detail was attended to. All travelers made it to the tour start, in spite of airline delays. The tour guides had infectious enthusiasm for each event. Probably the best parts were the “cultural connections” where VBT arranged for our tour group to have private hikes and cultural demonstrations with local community members. While Machu Picchu’s beauty is spectacular, the solitude of our private encounters trumped it for me. The trip extensions (pre- in Lima, post- in Amazon) were well worth the extra time and money. The extra day of rest and tour in Lima were appreciated after over night travel. The experience of being in the Amazon was amazing, but be forewarned that additional costs are incurred because of suggested yellow fever & typhoid fever vaccines and malaria medications ($275pp at our travel clinic in 2012). The only negative of the trip for us was the overnight travel. It takes a lot out of you and makes for a necessary day of recovery upon return from vacation.

This trip went far beyond my expectations! I loved the immersion into past and present Inca cultures. Carlos and Jorge’s passion and knowledge for their country made this trip amazing & truly special. Highlights include hiking the Inca trail, exploring Machu Picchu, spending a day with the Cuyuni community and visiting a rural mountain home and farmer’s market. One of the benefits of this trip were the friendships we made with like minded travelers. I think every world traveler should see Machu Picchu in their lifetime. It was an emotional, magical & life changing experience for me.

The Peruvian VBT Experience was one of the best we have never had. Every detail of the itinerary was well planned to provide the range of cultural experiences while staying active and involved. We learned so much about the Inca culture while experiencing wonderful food, interesting traditions, gorgeous vistas, and beautiful lodging. Our guides were knowledgeable, informative, affable, and fun. We not only learned about the history, but the spiritualism and lifestyle of the Incas, while visiting astounding archeological sites. It seems also that we share similar values and interests with the other guests that are attracted to the VBT experience. We created lifelong memories.

Carlos and Jorge did a great job leading this trip.
I have led photo tours myself and know how hard it is to plan and execute a venture like this. These leaders did it day after day with perfection.
My hats off to the both of them.

This is one of the best trips I have ever taken!! My fellow travelers and the guides made it a highlight of my life.

Pro: Excellent accommodations, superior guides, good food, and educational tour. Great to travel with a small and interesting group! Inca trail is a MUST!
Con: Could have arranged better flight schedules. Last day should have organized tour rather than free day.

Words cannot even begin to express this magical journey through Peru & Machu Picchu. It was sacred, spiritual & almost surreal. This adventure is one of my most favorite VBT trips & I have been on 8 trips. I would recommend this to anyone who likes hiking, adventure & learning about new cultures. Hiking the Inca trail was a lifetime adventure & exploring Machu Picchu was truly a dream come true. This trip is beyond a 5 star rating!

This was our first walking tour with VBT and our first trip to South America. The pre-trip to Lima was a great way to start the trip….gave you time to acclimate. The pre-trip hotel was in a very good location and the Lima historical tours were excellent. VBT schedules the walking part of this tour just right……you start at lower elevations in the Sacred Valley with challenging but less strenuous walks. It’s all leads up to the 8 mile climb on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu which is quite an adventure with spectacular scenery. All the hotels were excellent; the food and guides were outstanding. We highly recommend the tour.
Snowbird, Naples, Florida
The lodging, food, cultural activities, and guides were exceptional. From the time we arrived in Peru and met up with our group, we were on the go. While there was ample “down time” allotted, there was so much I wanted to see and experience, no naps for me! The photographic opportunities were plentiful and the guides did an excellent job making themselves available to assist in any way possible. The tour’s activities were very well structured to acclimate the trip’s participants to the altitude so they would be “conditioned” for the Machu Picchu Day hike. Our guides were superb….a perfect 10.
Nancy60, Casper, WY
There is such diversity of things to experience in Peru from the bustle of Lima to the serenity of Machu Picchu. The itinerary offered a broad range of activities and was very well planned. This was a terrific trip.
Jetson, New York, NY
This past October, my husband and I, along with our older daughter and her boyfriend, visited Peru and Machu Picchu together. Though we are experienced world travelers, this was our first trip to South America and on a walking trip. All I can say is WOW!!
We started out on the pre-trip to Lima. Touring the Larco Archeology Museum with their enthusiastic, youthful curator was worth the trip to this city alone. We were introduced to pre-Columbian art at this largest private collection in the world, which was thoughtfully displayed. We found this tour most helpful as what we learned there would be shown to us in a variety of ways throughout our trip, which reinforced our own appreciation and understanding of Peruvian art, culture, and history. Taking a bus tour of Lima at night was incredibly beautiful, and we highly recommend Amor Amar in Barranco, Lima for an open-air lunch as well as Central Restaurant for a 5-star dining experience. We regret that we did not sign up for the post-trip to the Amazon to get a flavor of that area.
OK, now on to the highlight: our daily walks were such an incredible way to see the highlands area of Peru, which included the Sacred Valley. Every day provided our group (which was wonderful and cohesive) with unique walking experiences that both showcased nature specific to that region and Peruvian history. We found the week to be incredibly well organized! What a new concept for my husband and me to leave all the organizing and administrative work and travel (air, van, train, and bus) in the hands of others while we get to focus on our walks and travel experiences! Our entire group felt the walking itinerary was very well paced with more relaxing walks interspersed between the more challenging ones. We all appreciated the thoughtfulness and consideration that went into putting together our daily schedule.
Part of the appeal of this trip for us was the option of my taking the train to Machu Picchu while the rest of my family walked there if I felt that the 8-mile Inca trail would be too difficult. However, once we signed up for this trip, I began to increase my training in the gym so that I could be in good physical shape, especially with the increased elevations and some steeper walks that we would be encountering. Given that there were older adults on our trip planning to hike the Inca trail gave me the courage to do it as well. A peak experience for me was completing the Inca trail and walking through the Sun Gate while looking down at Machu Picchu and feeling so proud of my accomplishment! I will never forget that day! Committing to a bike or walking trip is the best way to make a commitment to one’s physical fitness as that has to start months before the actual trip!
I want to give a shout out to our two wonderful VBT tour leaders, Carlos and Miguel. They were fun to be with, energetic, and great ambassadors to their home country. Carlos and Miguel complemented each other very well given their own individual and specialized interests in Inca culture, customs, and religion as well as birding and plants/flowers. We all felt well taken care of and supported by them. Having really strong group leaders makes for a successful trip.
And our daily written itinerary could not begin to fully capture the many terrific surprises and culinary delights that were offered to us as the week progressed. More wow’s!! We also loved meeting the Peruvian people who were friendly and welcoming. Last but not least, the hotels/resorts where we stayed were wonderful and offered magnificent vistas and the most comfortable beds for our tired, but fully satisfied selves. Each day began with a full and delicious breakfast before our van and driver would transport us to another interesting region for another amazing walk.
This trip exceeded our expectations, and we found that participating in “an active vacation” is a unique and healthy way to discover a new country.

This trip was a deep immersion into the culture of the Andes. The hiking was moderate (except for the climb to Sun Gate) and allowed me to feel connected to the experience. It was a busy trip with a couple of the best hotels I’ve ever stayed in and some excellent meals. It was especially meaningful that the guides grew up in Cuzco and were full of information about flora, fauna, history and folklore. Great trip.
The pretrip excursion in Lima was very helpful – the Larco Museum experience helped us understand the indigenous peoples with whom we spend the following week.
The interactions with the Andean people were educational & almost religious. Walking in the mountains was as advertised – on uneven ground, but that made the trip even more interesting.
The Inkaterra accommodations were beautiful & educational.

Peru is friendly and beautiful!
I learned so much about the history and lifestyle of the past and present people of this area.
The Cuyuni community day was filled with color and smiles and laughter and beautiful vistas.
Hiking the Inca Trail was hard work, but I am happy to say I made it! The reward at the Sun Gate was worth it!
The post trip extension to the Amazon Basin is NOT to be missed, so unlike anywhere I had been.
Our tour leaders were knowledgeable, friendly and charming, making certain every minute we were on the best trip we could imagine!

Unless you do this trip yourself, I won’t be able to fully convey how great it is. You want culture? Check. You want great guides? Check. You want great food and accommodations? Check and check. Scenery? Some energetic yet not “over the top” hiking? Sure thing, got them, too. Every detail considered, coordinated, and made simple for you the traveler. I cannot imagine making all the special unique arrangements on my own that were necessary to make this trip perfect. Picnic lunch near Inca sites in a pastoral grove – you’d miss that. A stroll through the Maras salt pools? Never would happen. Keeping up with the train schedules that are known to change without notice; good luck. Even getting through the airport transfers – my Spanish is not up to that! Looking forward to our next VBT trip…

We had a great time on this tour. The food and accommodations were amazing. The walking started out slow and let everyone get used to the altitude. Each day the distances we walked increased so that by the time we hiked the Inca trail we were used to the altitude.
Our guides, Alvaro and Sergio, were awesome. They were nice and very knowledgeable..
We traveled on Sunday and the tour started on Monday. I would suggest that travel be on Saturday and the tour starts on Sunday. We were ready to leave on Saturday but just hung out. Then we had to go back to work the day after we got back from our trip and it would have been nicer to have an extra day ay the end of the vacation rather than in the beginning.
Also, our hotel in the Sacred Valley was awesome, but we spent a lot of time on the bus traveling to Pisac and the area surrounding there. It just seemed like we should have stayed closer to Pisac to minimize the time on the bus. Also, the hotel where we stayed was pretty isolated. It would have been nice to be closer to town so we could explore more.
Otherwise, everything was perfect and am already thinking where I can go on my next trip.

Our tour guides, Jorge and Sergio could not have been better. Both were extremely knowledgeable and very nice to travel with. It was amazing to see Machu Picchu in person and to learn a lot of the history of Peru. I am in awe of the sheer number of Incan ruins that we saw in addition to Machu Picchu. The hiking was challenging and thank goodness for the hiking poles, but it was worth every step for the gorgeous scenery we saw. Walking through the Maras Salt Pools was an amazing experience. The chance to sample local cuisine was fun, we tried passion fruit, guinea pig and also chicha (corn beer). We saw the cochineal beetles that are used to make the red dye carmine. We enjoyed everyone in our tour group and had a really great time together. I would definitely recommend this tour to everyone.

The superior organization of our tour along with guides that just couldn’t do enough for you made this trip incredible. Everyone and everything was looked after for us, so all we had to do was enjoy ourselves. This trip exceeded our expectations on many levels, thank you for such wonderful memories and experiences.

First time to South America, first time on a VBT tour and both exceeded expectations. The transfers were one of the best things about this trip – everything was effortless and I was not worried about where I needed to be or where my bags went. The hotels were also great – all part of the same Peruvian owned chain.
We were lucky enough to get passes to hike the Inca Trail, which is one of the highlights of this trip – the view from the Sun Gate, breathtaking. We applied for passes 6 months in advance and it was well worth it – and we were the envy of those who could not go!
Another highlight was the trip to the traditional Andean community at 13,000 feet. The people who lived there were happy to show us their traditions, even when it was out of season (they showed us how they shear sheep and interesting things that happen around harvest time – like making the llamas drink chicha, when we were there in the winter). They also cooked us lunch that day, delicious!
The leaders were also wonderful! Sergio and Miguel were amazing and really made the trip. Don’t let them ever leave, VBT!!
Jenna570, Pittston, PA, USA
The trip to Machu Picchu was our sixth with VBT, and my husband and I both agree, it was the best. The hiking, while very challenging, was always arranged so that the 13 people in our group could manage physical aspects and enjoy the people, the events and history of the places we visited.
When friends ask what we liked best, we tell them that the guides, Jorges and Miguel, were very knowledgeable about the Inca culture and shared many memorable stories with us. We found Peruvian cuisine to be excellent. All the meals we had were prepared with fresh ingredients from Peru farms and served in fabulous restaurants. As always, the VBT hotels were a joyous surprise every time we moved. There is no doubt we will continue to travel with VBT.
Gail, Toledo, OH, USA
I’ve thought about this a lot and still feel this trip is overpriced and not worth a weeks’ (9 days) time. The Andes are beautiful but after a while the ruins tend to look the same, as they were built for the most part, with the same purpose. There was too much time spent on the bus. Yes, I understand that the road system stinks but it meant a lot of time doing nothing. Overall, with one exception, the group I was with tended not to be as friendly and warm as on other VBT vacations. I’m sure that had a lot to do with how little I enjoyed this trip. I usually do bike trips with you and have found those to be far more enjoyable. Have already been asked by someone about this trip and told them to stay away and explained why. Will be doing some biking trips in the U.S. with another club as they are less costly (although I do have to rent a bike). Maybe sometime in the future I will come back, especially if I can get my husband hiking(he doesn’t bike). Quite truthfully, I have found that there is a difference in the people that bike and those that hike. I prefer the bikers.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We are disappointed to hear that the value and length of the tour did not meet your expectations. The majority of guests on this trip find the overall value of the tour for its cost to be outstanding, with 72.73% rating the overall value of the tour as “excellent.” 23.38% rated the value as “good.” In order to reach many of the destinations we visit in Peru, a bus shuttle is necessary and helps to keep the difficulty of the tour to a moderate level. 71.61% of travelers feel that the length of the tour is sufficient and the vast majority wish it could be longer. We hope that you will give us the opportunity to serve you on a walking or bicycling tour again.

My daughter and I just returned from this fabulous trip. I am still filled with the sights and sounds, the history and the culture of this beautiful diverse country. We did both the pre-trip option in Lima and the post-trip option in the rainforest and would highly recommend these to other travelers both for the extra time at the beginning to rest a bit and to appreciate the diversity of this country. The trip leaders were in a word OUTSTANDING. We watched other groups around us and their leaders and concluded that Jorge and Alviro were in a class well above any others. The hikes were challenging but wonderful and I am so glad that I did every one of them! The thrill of reaching the Sun Gate and seeing Machu Picchu for the first time will live with me forever.

I had high expectations for this trip and the reality far exceeded my imagination. If you long for a rich education in all facets of a country’s culture and you love the outdoors and activity, this is your trip. The education I received in the art, history and cuisine of Peru was remarkably rich and complex. Our guides were extraordinary and provided us with unique opportunities to sample snipets of Andean life . I did not feel as though I was on a typical tourista hampster wheel of prescriptive destinations. In addition to specially arranged experiences, this walking tour was a wonderful way to experience a country and it’s epic ruins. Our accommodations with the exception of one hotel (which was fine) were terrific. My only wish is that the trip had been longer.
I did do the extention trip to the Amazon. It was a place of dreams… so hard to leave.
Gladly, Portland, OR
Machu Picchu was a real treat. We were well taken care of. The visit to the villages was very touching and the Inca Trail Hike was challenging and very inspiring once reaching the summit.
vckb, San Jose
Loved our guides who had been raised in Cusco. Miguel was very in to Music and the shaman and Sergio loved History, and taught us so much. I loved walking the ruins, but there was always a choice of how much walking you wanted to do. The trip was so well orchestrated that no one suffered from the high altitudes..Lodgings were wonderful. A great experience for my first VBT trip.

Signed up in time to enter the Sacred Valley from the Inca trail which was a wonderful experience. So many steps but so much talk and laughter mixed with it that at night I’d catch myself laughing aloud as I remembered comments of the day. Meeting the fellow travelers of VBT are as big a part of the trip as the sites, and guides. All three make up the trips. Our second, this one walking since you can’t bike into MP and we still found all the parts we loved from our bike trip. No better way to really learn about an area than from all the side trips and local parts put in each day. I could have walked with less stops on our own but then we wouldn’t have had all the memories of people from other parts of our own country when we got home. Plus we actually got to “talk” to the people of Peru with our cameras, sign language and smiles. Even had them laughing.
NEmountaingoat, Grand Island, NE, USA
Visiting Peru is a must see and should be placed high on your bucket list. I fell in love with the Peruvian culture, and discovering the immense history of this new world wonder. The people of Peru were very interesting, rich in authenticity, and most of all proud of their heritage. I particularly enjoyed the gastronomical flavors, shopping for textiles, and hiking Manchu Picchu. Our tour guides were wonderful to get to know too, very knowledgable of their home land and made our journey not only educational but filled with laughter and fun. I look forward to my next adventure with the VBT.

Lost city of Inca is amazing. it is especially beautiful if you see it at sunset after hiking for a whole day along the Inca trail. Guides were very good, food good and exotic, country interesting and has a lot of history. The price was a little high compared with some other companies, but i travelled with VBT before and liked it so much that i was willing to pay extra.
raisa29, Westbrook, CT, USA
Machu Picchu gets all of the attention – and it was stunning – but getting a taste of ancient and modern Peru was what I was looking for and was not disappointed. A wonderful mix of experiences was fit into 9 days and our guides kept it fresh, interesting and a lot of fun.
My best trip ever!!! VBT should stand for very best travel. I tell everyone about my trip and your tour company. I used to spend hours, weeks, months, tweeking out the very best excursions. From accommodations, to adventures, airfares – I invested much into creating an exciting and memorable escape. Now you do all that for me. You actually do it better than I could! That’s saying alot. I will never travel without you as my companion again. The trip to Peru was culturally stimulating, physically challenging, it had it all.
pamelal, Leavenworth, WA 98826, USA
We are experienced travelers, but we were both stunned by the sheer majesty of Machu Picchu. Perhaps only the Grand Canyon rivals it for sheer visual impact. In a single view, with a simple 90 degree turn of one’s head, it is possible to see 7,000 ft high Machu Picchu, the valley floor 2,000 ft below, and 18,000 ft high snow capped mountains on the horizon. The juxtaposition of blue sky, cottony clouds, green nearby peaks, and even higher peaks in the mist is simply jaw-dropping. But the trip is not just Machu Picchu. Our guides took us to a native village at nearly 14,000 ft wherein we shared in local customs, witnessed the amazing weaving skills of the locals, and enjoyed a simple but delicious meal. Several walks over the course of the week took us to many more Incan ruins, all mind-bending in their engineering and construction. A visit to a heralded artist’s studio was a highlight as well. My wife hiked the Inca Trail, while I rode the train into Aguas Caliente. We both enjoyed our respective choices immensely. But make no mistake; we have hiked most of the U.S. and Canadian National Parks over the years, and the Inca Trail should be rated ‘Strenuous’ by any measure. Lodging was exceptional in every case, food was excellent, and our guides…typical of VBT…were sterling. A final picnic lunch provided an incredible surprise that I don’t want to spoil by revealing details here. We did both the pre- and post-trips and were extremely satisfied with our choices, especially the Amazon post-trip.
JoeCam, Lisle, IL
Only good things to say about this experience. The trip was well explained and the guides were fabulous. They knew their subject in depth and gave 200% consistently. Needless to say, this was an experience of a lifetime. I am still astounded when I see photos of Machu Pichu and now can remember the first impact of that impressive view. Do train in advance. The altitude sickness wasn’t fun but worth passing that first day of discomfort.
Cessydeb, Cessy, France
Our VBT guides have always been good on our many trips, but Miguel and Alvero were a unique combination which was over the top. Alvero focused on the science of what we know about the Incas and Miguel helped us experience the the Inca culture as it is still alive in the present time. Machu Picchu and the Andes provided the visual magic.
tom2, Palo Alto, CA, United States
I enjoyed the trip, especially the guides and the fellow travelers. Mostly, I wanted to see Machu Picchu and was not that interested in the Peru culture. Unfortunately, I have some fear of heights. Even though I showed my extreme risk averse nature earlier in the trip, none of the guides informed that the Inca trail would have a 60-80 degree drop off of 500-2000 feet or more for 3 consecutive hours of hiking. The altitude was not an issue, the vigor of the hike was not an issue, but the 500+ foot drop off with no guard rails, and trails that were less than 4 foot wide in parts unnerved me and I had a unpleasant experience. I did not research the Inca trail, and did not receive any communication that gave me an idea of the drop offs from either of the guides, nor from VBT in general… I would not recommend VBT for this reason as I could have used this sort of communication and would have not taken the hike. In addition, I think it would have been much more dangerous if there were wet conditions. We were lucky that there was minimal rain and not on the dangerous sections on the day we hiked…

We greatly appreciate your feedback and are sorry to hear you were unable to enjoy the Inca Trail. While this is the first we have heard of feedback like this, we will work with our leader staff in Peru to make sure proper expectations are set for our guests prior to embarking on this portion of the tour.

Jorge & Miguel were a great team – and the best tour guides!!
Diane and Wally, Rochester, NY, United States
VBT blocked my first review. Not sure why but here I go again. I liked the tour overall. The guides were great, the food was great and the inns were adequate to great. I normally do much more active vacations than this so, other than for the day with the Inca trail hike, the level of activity was below my threshold. I also recommend that on the first day they limit the bus travel. I did not enjoy spending five hours on the bus. Also did not enjoy the flight schedules VBT provided getting to and from Lima as they involved long layovers each way.
A walking trip was an interesting change of pace for us. With the cycling trips we tend to roll by many potentially interesting cultural interactions. Walking there was a greater opportunity to get to know our fellow travelers as well as experience the people and culture of the Country. The Peru trip was one of the best VBT trips we have taken.
David131, Shushan, NY
In line with ALL our VBT adventures, this walking tour included great guides, great information all along the way, great communication, accommodations, excursions, food, local treasures, and a group of fellow adventurers whom we loved being with!
JohnnyDoz, St Louis, MO, United States
This was one of my favorite trips we had a great group, great leaders and a perfect pace
El Guapo, LA, CA, United States
Interactions with locals living the traditional life style were wonderful experiences. Because of physical issues walking/hiking are difficult therefore cycling tours are my usual choice. Even though I didn’t take the more strenuous routes I had a fulfilling experience. Can’t think of one thing the guides could have done better or more of. Memories of a picnic surprise still makes me smile.

We dreamed of visiting Machu Picchu but did not anticipate just how surprisingly spectacular our visit would be through VBT. A little nervous about visiting Peru, we found ourselves in expert care with guides Jorge and Miguel whose warmth and enthusiasm for sharing Peruvian history and culture is infectious. The trip was well designed – beginning with gentle days to adjust to the altitude and leading up to the life-altering and mind-blowing hike through the Sun Gate into Machu Picchu. We were also delighted by the visits to many other spectacular archaeological sites and the special tour touches of meeting local people, visiting an authentic local farmer’s market, shaman ceremonies, picnics on hillsides, unique and comfortable accomodations, and exceptional Peruvian cuisine. All in all, a singular trip of a lifetime that we zealously recommend. We’re so glad we went now while we could do it all!

This trip was a 60th birthday gift to my sister, who was my travel partner. Hiking in the Andes was breathtaking and the cultural contacts made the trip come alive for both of us. The view upon entering Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate after a day of hiking the Inca Trail will be etched on our minds for a very long time.

This tour was a wonderful experience with terrific guides. Outstanding value for money. Our guides – Alvaro and Jorge – were simply fantastic …. informative, engaging, kept it interesting every day, on schedule, helpful …. we could go on, but you get the point. If you are interested in the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, we recommend this tour VERY highly!
Andy and Terry, Riverside, CA, United States
This was an absolutely wonderful tour. We had 2 guides for 18 people so everyone was well taken care of. The excursions and hikes were full of cultural information and the guides made sure we were all well fed and hydrated. I highly recommend the Inca Trail option. Coming through the Sun Gate was the best way to first see Machu Picchu, but the tour is so much more than Machu Picchu. Hiking the Andes was definiteyly unforgetable!

My husband and I finally fulfilled a goal we have had for several years to visit Peru and Machu Picchu. Our expectations were exceeded with VBT Tours and our excellent guides Jorge and Sergio. The itinerary was full of wonderful surprises and beautiful hotels. Even though we only hiked the last 6 or 8 miles of the Inca Trail, it was a fabulous experience to know we were forever a part of the history of that magical place, and to walk up through the Sun Gate was overwhelming.

I am so happy that I decided to partake in the VBT Peru walking tour. It was an amazing excursion into the beauty, history, and undeniable culture of the country.
We had a wonderful time , weather was great and Machu Picchu is so amazing- to think that this was built so long ago tells us that those people had such knowledge that it is hard to comprehend.

This was our first trip with VBT, but it won’t be the last. We loved the active format, the well-informed guides, and the interesting fellow travelers.

Being able to climb the same stone step as did the Incas many years ago is what memories are made of. Learning and seeing the skill required to obtain, move and work the stone as they did without the availability of anything other than simple hand tools is phenomenal. Having the opportunity to visit a small, mountaintop village and learn about their culture simply added to the trip’s value.
Visiting Machu Picchu should certainly be a ‘checked-off’ item on your life’s bucket list!

My sister and I have been talking about visiting Machu Picchu for a while. After much research we settled on the VBT trip and it was the best decision we made. It really is the best value out there. We were part of the April 11, 2016 trip. The attention to every detail, whether logistics, transfers, snacks and water on the bus, incredible accommodations, food, etc. was incredible and much appreciated. Our group was small consisting of 9 people which was just the perfect size. Participants were friendly and supportive of each other. Our guides, Sergio and Alvaro could not have been better proud and knowledgeable ambassadors of their Andean culture. They went out of their way to support our trip in every way and make us feel comfortable. All we had to do is soak up the awesome sights, sounds and architecture surrounding us. Well, there was the hiking over pretty rough terrain, a bit tough for people who do not hike on a regular basis, but the awesome sights along the way were reward enough. Overall an unforgettable experience!

Our two guides’ breadth and depth of knowledge and their passion enhanced our experience far beyond our expectations for the trip!

The guides Sergio and Alvaro were simply outstanding!!! They were so proud of their country and they gave us so much information! I was very impressed with the beauty of the country, and also learning about the local customs. Our guides surprised us with meeting the locals, participating in a ceremony, visiting the local farmer’s market, riding in the local taxis, and lastly they arranged a gourmet dinner atop a spectacular hill catered by the best restaurant in a tent!

I cannot say enough in the way of praise for this trip. Peru and Peruvians were amazing; the tour guides were the best we have ever had; the accommodations were luxurious and the food outstanding.
My husband and I were thrilled each and everyday with the hikes and experiences from our recent VBT hiking trip in Peru. It is definitely one of the VERY BEST trips we have ever taken!! Not only did we love hiking the Inca Trail from km 104 to Machu Picchu with all the ancient up and down stone steps leading to the monkey climb and the amazing Sun Gate, but we totally enjoyed all the other beautiful hikes and cultural experiences that were part of this trip! The organizers and knowledgeable guides did an exceptional job of carefully and thoroughly planning each segment of this trip immersing us into ancient Inca traditions as well as modern Peruvian life. Yes, we did train for the hikes and it made the days not at all beyond our abilities. The trails, often high in the mountains, were all comfortably hikeable even if heights can be concerning. And, on the longest or highest elevation hikes we had extra support people in addition to our fabulous guides to ensure our safety. In short, this VBT trip is truly not to be missed!! Sign-up for the pre Lima and post Amazon Rainforest trips too. Both are fantastic!

Words cannot do justice for this amazing trip. The perfect combination of tremendous tour leaders, walking companions, and Peru itself!
The guides (Oscar, Sergio and Jorge) were very knowledgable, helpful and friendly. The whole trip ran smoothly because of their work and expertise. One (minor) improvement would be alcoholic drink options other than pisco sours.

I got to experience Peru with my mom, and it was really the trip of a lifetime. We were fully immersed in the culture there, had great physical activities, sight-seeing, and meals, and best of all- we could not have had better guides! I would definitely use VBT again.

Machu Picchu and the surrounding Peruvian countryside were shown to our group through interactions with the people. Our guides did a great job explaining the history of the area. Hiking the Inka trail was a once in a lifetime experience. Thoroughly enjoyed everything about the trip!

Regarding my recent VBT trip to Peru. The trip exceeded my expectations. The accommodations were all first class. The hotel staff were all friendly and and put us at ease. The bus driver Angel was extremely professional and I felt safe in his hands at all times. His driving was exemplary. The food suggestions and choices were all very well chosen and also accommodating. The choices of destinations, trails and timing were also well thought out. We were supplied water at all times and strategically, bathroom breaks were also well thought out and well timed. It seems that every aspect was well thought out and timed. Last but not least, our guides, Sergio and Alvaro. I cannot praise them enough. Like the old saying, “time flies when you are having fun” well they made time fly. We learned, we laughed, we walked, we had fun. They worked very very hard to insure our safety and pleasure throughout the entire trip. I would 100% recommend.

We’ve done three cycling trips with VBT in Europe in the past. This was our first walking trip. We particularly enjoyed this trip because of the historical and cultural context provided. Our two guides helped us explore and understand Peru, which is lovely and complex. The highlight, of course, was Machu Picchu, but there are many other things to see and do.
The Omnivore, Westford, MA, United States
Alvaro and Miguel were excellent guides. They were so attentive to everyone and everything on the trip. Each day, each part of the day, we were met with surprising experiences of history, culture and geography. Our guides knowledge of the Andes and Peru was superb. They shared their views on how the country had evolved and were very optimistic of its future.
The climb to the Sun gate, and Machu Picchu was amazing! Originally I was skeptical of how fit you needed to be. Our guides insured that everyone ha an opportunity to meet the challenge at their own pace, and guess what? Everyone on our trip made it! We were told we were the first group that had everyone go on the trail. I highly recommend the hike. Do it! It’s the experience of a lifetime.
Kaysee, Concord, MA, United States
This was, by far, the best VBT I’ve taken (and the rest have been great). Peru is physically gorgeous. The guides (a notch above excellent) spoke eloquently about the history, culture and geography of the country. We had local experiences that we never would have had if we had attempted this trip on our own. The food was outstanding and our lodgings were quite nice. We saw amazing sites (an agricultural experimentation station from the 1500s) and learned so much (the Incas were an extraordinarily accomplished group). Highly recommended!
KarenM, Boston, MA
I thought this trip was a perfect balance of planned group activities and free time to explore the area around our hotels. It was also a perfect combination of urban and more remote sites. Our guides were fantastic and went above and beyond our expectations. All of our accommodations were fantastic and the restaurants chosen for our included meals were very good.
Outstanding guides Alvarro and Miguel truly made us comfortable and secure at all times. They gave even the weakest hikers confidence to make it. And they did! If you are worried about the hike or altitude, don’t be. If you can walk your dog an hour or so no worries. The bus option at Machu Pichu a good option too.
Don’t miss this super local resident interaction hike. The “real” experiences with them put this tour at the top of our list and we did not think Amalfi Coast could be beat.
dcfloyd, Missouri, United States
The whole trip, including pre- and post-trips, was extremely well planned to include a wonderful cross-section of Peruvian and Incan history and customs along with stunning sceneries, wildlife, and superb accommodations and food. The trip was expertly led by two very knowledgeable and personable native guides who managed to fit everything in even though there was a strike/blockade the prevented us from entering the Sacred Valley when initially scheduled. All of the participants were seeking similar objectives and got along with each other extremely well. In summary, it was a truly wonderful and memorable experience.
Stoney, Annapolis, MD, United States
Wonderful vistas with amazing Inca ruins and Amazonian wildlife make this a great trip. Guides were knowledgeable and very friendly. Food was surprisingly good. Lodging was very nice, especially in the Amazon. Hiking was at times strenuous but very doable. Would have liked a little more free time and option to spend one more day in the Amazon on our post trip. Also think the tips should be paid up front and not at the end ( having to go to the ATM repeatedly for tip money was ridiculous). Someone needs to be taught how to schedule convenient and efficient airline bookings.

This trip exceeded my expectations in every way. VBT attends to every detail so that travelers need not worry about a thing. Our tour guides, Gorge and Miguel, were incredibly knowledgeable and made every effort to ensure that all travelers were having a wonderful vacation. The hikes, cultural experiences, hotels, and restaurant choices were all excellent.Unexpected surprises along the way added to our appreciation of VBT’s, and our guides’, attention to detail. We could not have asked for anything more to enhance our visit to Peru and Machu Picchu. Thank you, VBT!

Finally… Intipunku, the Sun Gate! After hiking the last 8 miles of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, we entered into this ancient, holy site. Previously seen pictures of Machu Picchu do not compare to the awe and wonder of seeing it with ones own eyes. As you gaze upon the many terraces and ruins, you wonder How? How could the Incas build so high up in the “Cloud Mountains”? How could they live? How could anyone find this place? As you walk among the ruins, you witness the intelligence, the skillfulness, the organization and the customs of a community that survived for only a short time before being hidden to the world until uncovered in 1911. As you leave Machu Picchu, take a look around at the majesty of the mountains surrounding this amazing site and know, that most likely, there are more Inca ruins still hidden waiting to be discovered!
VBT MACHU PICCHU TRIP REVIEW
Others have and will write about the magical splendor of Machu Picchu, the breathtaking beauty of the Inca Trail, and the lush grounds of the Inkaterra hotel at Agua Calientas. This review, however, focuses on our four incredible tour guides:
I can’t imagine better tour leaders or a more compatible pair than SERGIO PRIETO and MIGUEL VERGARA, who accompanied us throughout the trip. Both men exuded love for and dedication to Peruvian culture. Sergio imbued his talks with a wealth of information and nuanced analysis of Peruvian history. Miguel—who is training to be an Inca Shaman—evoked the magic, spirituality and harmony of Inca culture. Both are men of grace, warmth, kindness, and gentleness. They took care of every matter large and small, they anticipated and fulfilled our every need, and they created an atmosphere filled with generosity of spirit, mutual respect, and humor among all 13 of us. They set the tone for 13 strangers to become instant friends who supported and encouraged one another during the pleasures and challenges of the trip.
As the oldest member of the group, I was not sure I could make the 8-mile Inca Trail with its rough-hewn stone steps and mixture of heart-stopping climbs and treacherous descents. Though skeptical about my ability to master the trail, Sergio (who climbed the trail with us while Miguel took others on the train) responded to my strong desire to climb it with encouragement tinged with anxiety. He also assigned two additional guides, WILLY and MARCO, to accompany me on the trail. Willy and March guided me for six hours with patience and strength. They took turns carrying my knapsack, and they held my hand during the more difficult downhill stretches and during the few minutes of treacherously narrow passages. And, when I finally made it to the top, no one was happier or cheered louder than Sergio!
In summation, all four guides embodied the magic of Machu Picchu and contributed to making this a memorable trip of a lifetime!

The Machu Picchu & Sacred Valley trip was my first VBT experience, and it certainly won’t be my last. From the minute I set foot in South America, every detail was skillfully handled and every need anticipated by our excellent guides Sergio and Miguel. As the vacation planner for my family, I know how much work goes into organizing a good trip and having everything run smoothly. It was a pleasure to surrender all that to Sergio and Miguel. The itinerary for this trip is fantastic, as are the hotels and meals. As a solo traveler, I felt completely comfortable and at ease at all times. The fact that many of my fellow travelers are repeat VBT customers certainly says something!!!

We visited amazing places, learned lots about Peruvian history and present culture, and had a marvelous time. The accommodations were excellent and the food was delicious. Our guides, Jorge and Miguel, were very skilled at imparting information and making the experience unforgettable.

We signed up for this trip as I wanted to visit Machu Picchu in my lifetime. We got so much more out of this trip than we ever expected. Our guides, Jorge and Miguel, exposed up to the cultural, historical, natural and anthropological history of Peru in a way that we would never have gotten from a book. The daily walking was well paced and comfortable and took us through amazing countryside along the Inka trail. The only disappointment was not being able to take the train due to an unanticipated rail strike to get to walk the last 8 miles along the Inka trail to arrive at Machu Picchu via the Sun Gate but the alternate plan was great and without the crowds of Machu Picchu. We did get to Machu Picchu the next day via the train. The accommodations and food were great. We also added the 2 day extension to the Amazon, and it was great too.
Rockjed, New Gloucester, ME, United States
Overall this was a great trip. The scenery, culture, and sites are incomparable. The mountains and valleys along with the Incan ruins make this a must see. The two guides were knowledgeable and friendly. I had a few minor issues that might be addressed in the future: There was too little time between landing in Lima and having to get to flight to Cuzco. We were afraid we would miss our flight. There was too little time allowed to spend in some small towns independent of guides. Specifically more time could be allowed in Ollantayambo (skipping a family home visit and having guest eat lunch on their own). Hiking to Huayna in Machu Picchu should be made as an option. This was one of my goals while there and it turned out it was not possible. Lastly, don’t overdo the church tours at the end of the trip in Cuzco. Looking at 2 churches or temples is enough…anything over that is overkill.

This was my 4th VBT trip since 2016 (the other 3 were cycling) & I liked it A LOT!
Kamiar, Corpus Christi, TX, United States
We so enjoyed the balance of perspectives provided by our two guides, both of them knowledgeable and nice. The attention to detail, checking in with everyone in the group, and their obvious enthusiasm for what they were sharing gave us–at the less fit end of the spectrum–confidence and support, while not feeling anyone else was lacking attention. Remarkable. Memorable and thrilling trip. Thank you!
TedG, Boston, MA, United States
VBT, once again, did not disappoint! This was our first walking/hiking tour with VBT. (We have done many of their cycling tours! Loved them!!) From the scenery, to the food, to the guides, to our group, to Machu Picchu – everything was fabulous! This trip is rated Moderate and does require a certain level of physical fitness – from the altitude (7,000 up to 13,700) and the terrain on which we were hiking, the days were challenging but enjoyable. While my husband is challenged with a fear of heights, having the walking poles for the Inka Trail was a life saver! We had never used poles before and had the days leading up to MP to get used to them. He got thru it and was so happy he did it. Hiking the Inka Trail was on our “bucket list” and while strenuous, the view of Machu Picchu from the Sun Gate was extraordinary!! This was a trip of a lifetime!
robing0215, Arlington Heights, IL, United States
I have been on three VBT tours and they have all been great, but the Machu Picchu tour has to be one of the most amazing and majestic moments I have ever experienced.
The experience of hiking the trail and getting to the Gateway to Machu Picchu was an ‘ah’ moment for me. It was spectacular with the cloud cover and then all of a sudden the cloud cover vanished and the image of Machu Picchu was incredible.
Our tour guides (Alvaro and Miguel) were just as amazing with their knowledge. Both of them gave us such an amazing perspective and background of how the Inca civilization was born and struggles they had to go through.
If you are new to VBT, make sure this is one of your trips. You too will have that ‘ah’ moment.
Luz Espino, Simi Valley, CA, United States
I have been wanting to travel and see/experience Machu Picchu for 15 years! This tour was beyond my hopes and expectations! Not only did I experience Machu Picchu (which was amazing!) But I learned so much about the Inca life, civilization and history. Also, the weather of Peru was explained and the guides could answer questions about the local floral and fauna! Oh! And local customs were also explained! Marvelous!! One should also know that there are so many more ruins besides Machu Picchu in the Sacred Valley and the VBT guides, Alvaro and Jorge, did an amazing job explaining and educating our group about those ruins also. I felt like I was on a walking University Continuing Educational class. And, the guides were also funny and charming. Who could ask for more!?
If you are hesitant about the altitude…don’t be! My husband who usually has some trouble with altitude when sleeping at night brought Diamox (prescription med for altitude sickness) and he did not have to take one pill the entire trip! Very clever and thoughtful how VBT arranged the tour.

The trip had a little bit of everything: good food, great guides, wonderful people, and absolutely incredible scenery.
SML518, Syracuse, NY, United States
My husband and I just got back from our trip to Peru. It was a wonderful, memorable adventure. The care that the trip leaders took with our group was outstanding. The trip was very well planned, hotels were great, itineraries varied and interesting. We learned so much about the history and people of Peru. The hike on the Inca Trail was a highlight. It was quite challenging because of the altitude and I was the slowest one in the group – but our guide Alvaro stayed with me, encouraged me, and just kept telling me to take my time so he was a great motivator. The food was terrific with the day of the “picnic” most astonishing! The pre-trip to Lima was also great with a wonderful guide to show us the sights. We also did the post trip and enjoyed that as well – we definitely saw and experienced so many aspects of Peru, its people, its history, and its culture.
joyful traveler, Morristown, NJ, United States
Our trip to Peru was a wonderful surprise. The draw was Machu Picchu and the Inka trail and these did not disappoint. But it had not occurred to us how much we would appreciate the beauty of the Andes, the warmth of the people, and the cleanliness of the cities we visited (especially compared with our recent trip to India!!). It was very different than our only other VBT trip biking in Italy. As a walking vacation, you need to bus wherever you go. We spent a fair amount of time on the bus as a group. But the guides use bus time to talk about the culture, the history, and the adventures awaiting, so it did not feel like time wasted. The itinerary is ingenious in helping you acclimate to the elevation over the first few days. Even with that, everyone felt short-of-breath and we all wondered how in the world we would do the Inka trail. But the guides knew how long to have us go before a break and how to help us pace ourselves. Don’t be fooled by the term “moderate” in the description of the Inka trail. For all but the most fit person, it was a challenge. The initial 2 hours are spent hiking uphill, the elevation is high, and the trail varies from dirt path to uneven stones, to uneven steps that can be steep either going up or going down. So many stone steps! But the scenery is stunning and the reward of making it was worth every step! And the guides and porters are available to help in even the most basic ways – like carrying extra water and our lunches!
Another highlight was the working market we visited one morning. It gave us an up-close and personal look at the life of the Andean people. The guides worked with VBT to add this to the itinerary, and every member of our group was glad! Thank you for listening to your guides VBT. They knew what they were talking about!
Several things I’m glad I had: sunscreen, bug spray, sun and bug protective shirts and pants, a hat, a comfortable day pack, a steripen to sterilize water, Diamox to prevent altitude sickness, and hiking boots. Some in our group wore trail shoes and loved them. I appreciated having hiking boots with ankle support. Personal preference. The guides provide lots of water, but some in our group purchased extra to manage altitude symptoms. We appreciated having the steripen so we could sterilize as much as we wanted out of the tap (we never got sick!) We were careful with raw food that was not peeled, but the places they took us were carefully screened and we did not have a problem.
The Amazon was another wonderful surprise. Think of it as camping with the ultimate of glamour. No air conditioning, TV, WiFi, or cell service. It is hot and humid, but you are living close to nature. The thatched huts are basic but charming and had a view of the river. It was incredibly restful being unplugged laying in the hammock under the ceiling fan. The food was fabulous, the setting was like paradise, and the outings were interesting. It was an easy add-on and rounded out our Peru experience beautifully. Take your binoculars and camera and make sure you boat/hike to Lake Sandoval, hope you catch a glimpse of the many squirrel monkeys jumping from tree to tree and wrestling each other along the water’s edge, and watch the sunset. That was a highlight.
Linda G, Portland, OR, USA
What a fabulous experience. The guides, Sergio and Miguel conveyed their passion from which we learned so much about the country and cultural. Highlights included hiking the Inca trial, visiting a community in the Andes and going to a food market!
Shelley, Andover, MA
If you think hiking to Machu Picchu’s Sun Gate was the only highlight of this trip, you’re underestimating Peru, the Sacred Valley, and the Andian people. The wonder of your initial view of Machu Picchu replenishes your gasps for oxygen. But it is only one memory of many created by outstanding VBT guides. Their knowledge – and storytelling manner to convey it – made this trip stand out from all others I’ve taken. I learned about the Andian people from long ago to today – their culture, language, foods, and values – and now the Sacred Valley is meaningful to me. The accommodations and meals were superb, the hikes, market visits, and other activities were memorable, and the trip details were well executed. Overall, all successes were due to the best guides I’ve experienced.

So much more to discover beyond Machu Pichu and Cusco. Our guides Sergio and Alvaro were fantastic and truly cared about our needs! Loved every minute of our trip!!!!!

This was an excellent trip. The excursions were all well planned. The guides were friendly and knowledgeable. And the food was delicious.

This is my 6th trip with VBT but my first walking tour. I have never had a less than wonderful experience with VBT and Machu Picchu was no exception. Hotels were great. The hotel in Cusco was centrally located so exploring the city and main square was easy. The resort hotels in the sacred valley and Machu Picchu were beautiful and incorporated the natural habitats of the area into the grounds of the resort. The hotel at the airport leaving was what you’d expect from an airport hotel but we were just sleeping and there was a skyway that connected to the terminal which made getting on our flight in the evening very easy. When we arrived we were told the food would be great and they were right. Any cafe you walked into had great food. The dinners and lunches included gave a wide sampling of the local specialities. The picnic lunch by the lake was really a terrific day. Our tour leaders Sergio and Jorge couldn’t have been better, and I say that about every tour leader I’ve ever had with VBT, but Sergio and Jorge were particularly good because I knew so little about the Andean culture and they were great guides.

The trip was organized well, the guides were amazing, the Peru was awesome.

Perfect experiences: both hiking and stops.. The experiences intereacting with the locals were most memorable..
The lodging and dining was exquisite! Particularly the Inkaterra properties.
Our guides, Miguel and Alvaro, were helpful, informative, friendly, and quite knowledgeable.
My first trip to Peru was an experience of a lifetime!
JWW1973, Ellijay, Georgia
The Inca trail hike, the Sacred Valley and the post trip to the Amazon were great. The food was delicious but I did get sick from it on the trip and was in the ER the day I got back. The hotels except the last few nights in Cusco were great (I had a really lousy room at the end in Cusco.) The guides were informative and interesting.
But I didn’t bond with the group the way I have on the other 3 VBT trips I’ve taken.
As the only solo person on the trip, it made for a lonely experience and I don’t think the guides were aware of or even sensitive to the issue. I can’t recommend VBT trips for solo travellers who don’t already know someone on the trip. It’s better to just take an independent trip.

We’ve been planning for years to take this trip and could not have been more pleased, Every day was carefully planned to maximize the experience. The trip leaders insured that we were involved in the culture, food and physical activity in the best way possible, Both the pre- and post trip totally enhanced our enjoyment as we learned about the beautiful people and country of Peru.

Our guides, Sergio and Jorge, were fantastic! The accommodations were top notch and the hikes and excursions all had a special quality about them that made them unique. I put a group of 17 people together for this trip and it was a 5 star hit!

Hiking is really the best way to explore the Sacred Valley. We feel we learned so much from the VBT tour guides and the post trip excursion to the Amazon shouldn’t be missed.
This was the best trip we have ever taken. We were immersed in a very unique, beautiful and interesting culture. Our wonderful guides, Jorge and Miguel, shared their wealth of knowledge in a passionate, funny and heartfelt way. The trip was well organized, every detail attended to. We could not have asked for anything more. It was truly perfect.

What can you say about a well organized, interesting, trip to one of the 7 Wonders of the Modern World with a great group of people and leaders [Jorge, Miguel and Ciro were extraordinary!]? Once again the VBT exceeded expectations I didn’t know I had!….we’ve already registered for our 8th Portugal here we come!

We were reluctant to give up the freedom of traveling at our own pace by joining an organized tour. VBT proved us completely wrong. They did an amazing job from start to finish. Looking forward to traveling with them again. The tour guides were first-rate professionals (Jorge and Miguel).
Hamamatsu, Washington, DC, USA
We took this tour during the second half of June. The trip was great. We picked this time of the year since it is the beginning of the dry season and not in their high season, so the crowds were not too bad. We had cool weather and no rain.
Everyone says not to drink the water out of the tap, so we did not. They offer plenty of free bottles of water, so it was no problem at all. As for the food, we were careful not to eat uncooked vegetables and fruit on the street, but at all the hotel restaurants where we stayed and the restaurants that the guides took us to or recommended, there was no problem with eating salads and fruit.
The guides were outstanding. Jurge and Miguel went the extra mile to make our hikes and trip great. The information they provided at the each part of the trip was excellent. The hikes were challenging, but the pace was good for everyone in our group. Everyone did the Inca Trail hike and completed it with no problem.
The service to and from the airports was the best ever. When we were transferring to Cusco from Lima, the VBT representative arrived with our tickets and bag tags already printed and had checked us in. When we got to the airport all we had to do was drop our bags off and go through security to the gate. It was the same on each transfer.
We did the pre-trip in Lima. It was okay if you like the chaos of a large city. We did take the included tour of the city and the museum and that was very good. The guides on that were excellent also.
We also did the post trip to the Amazon rain forest. We had been concerned about bugs and diseases and gotten all the shots. Maybe because it was in the dry season, but we did not see any significant number of bugs nor did we get any bug bites. We did use insect repellent just to be safe. Shorts and short sleeve shirts were the norm. The stay in the rain forest was great. We did the night trip on the river the first afternoon we got there. The next day we did the canopy walk in the morning and the oxbow lake hike and canoe trip in the afternoon. They were all well worth doing and are included at no charge. There are other excursions some free and some are extra, but with just two days, we felt the three we did was just right.
Overall the entire trip was great and no one should be afraid to do it. Just make sure to have good broken in hiking shoes and do some good walking before you begin your trip.
