Italy: Southern Tuscany & Giglio Island Reviews

Tuscan towns have it all

What a way to experience Italy. The towns were quaint and I loved talking to all the locals. Biking up to all the small villages was a great experience. Tuscany was my first European biking trip but not my last

Molto Bene -- Come & Ride

What a wonderful tour — the Med, Giglio Island, olive oil, hills, cooking class, hills, agriturismos, hills, Rome. Did I mention hills? 🙂 This was our first VBT trip and the wonderful time we had was impetus for us to take five more (and counting).

This tour has the best combination of features. The views on the rides were spectacular and the towns visited were full of history and charm.

Tuscany by the Sea was accurately described (easy/moderate). My husband and I rode enough before our trip that we were able to comfortably do every single ride. The tour guides were fabulous and full of information and helpful hints. Their support throughout the trip was exemplary! The accommodations exceeded all expectations and the food was exceptional. We felt safe on the road because the routes were expertly chosen and the maps and cue sheets were accurate and easy to follow. What a way to see Italy!

Easy riding in beautifully varied areas

Ancient hilltowns and coastal rides created a great scenic variety for this bike tour. Accomodations were excellent and varied and were indicitive of the area. Angelo and Marcello ,the guide who looks like Sean Connery’s lost brother, were wonderful guides.

Traveling with VBT is the BEST way to go!

My husband and I went on a non-VBT bicycling tour in Europe (in order to save some money), but there is no way we’d ever do it again. You simply cannot put a price tag on the level of service that we enjoyed from our VBT tour guides.

Loved this tour

The Tuscany by the Sea trip was wonderful. I loved the trip leaders. They made the trip both fun and educational. Our hotels were exceptional and I loved when we baked the biscotti. The lunch at the olive oil factory was a treat as well. Thanks

So good! Food, accomadations and mostly the great people!!

Great way to see and feel the land. Easy bike with some big hills if you like (I did) but a ride if you want it. Brought our group close together and we are all still in touch. Our guides seamed to know what we wanted before we did.
Can not wait for our next trip!

It was an outstanding trip!

We never signed up for a biking vacation before. Our guides were very helpful and friendly. There was always an amazing snack waiting for us on the road. If you didn’t want to make a climb they were happy to have you jump in the van and no one made fun of you. We had a great group of people which made it very enjoyable. The sights, meals and, the wine was amazing! We would book another trip with VBT.

This was the trip of a lifetime!

The cycling was challenging but enjoyable on this trip. The pace was perfect and we were able to see a lot but also had time to just enjoy the people and places. The tour leaders were excellent and we felt well taken care of. When you add in great food and tour features this is a trip not to be missed.

Loved everything about the trip

This was a great trip. It was our first trip to Italy and didn’t want a typical tour. We enjoyed great company, exercised at our own pace, enjoyed wonderful food and saw awesome sights. We will be using Vbt again!

Truly Italian with wine aplenty!

Our trip to Italy on the Tuscany by the Sea tour with VBT was again unique- all have their own specialties and a must to be had!
We went in April which was a bit early for poppy fields and settings if you are into pictures, but our Grandson was going to be born and we decided to accomplish our European trip prior so we wouldn’t miss out.
This trip is more of a challenge for those who aren’t accustomed to longer, harder hill rides. I loved every one, although it seemed like you were always climbing to the next town more so than gentle rolling hills going up and down. By the third day you feel your strength and power in your legs to make every hill and forget the “Van support”, if only the Italians didn’t drink so much vino so late into the evening. All the places we went were so different and interesting. Our pre-trip into the city of Duomo, city on the hill had the most fantastic host hotel. We still keep in contact and her family love all my comments and pictures that I posted of them and their beautiful city on my blog. Still would like to get my own Vespa- it makes you think our American vehicles are way too big!

Return customers find that VBT service is consistently excellent.

After having a wonderful time bicycle touring in Ireland with VBT we knew we’d be repeat customers. The following year we took this beautiful trip to coastal Tuscany and found that the people we met and the places we went were fantastic, just as they had been the year before. Our leaders, Franco and Angelo, were remarkably attentive to everyone’s needs.

Loved the farm country and ancient hill towns.

The combination of ancient hill towns, beautiful farm country and spectacular shorelines on the azure sea were unbeatable. Our guides were delightful. They helped us get a real feel for the people and the land. We met great traveling companions in our group.Top it all off with an incredible tour in Rome and you have a vacation that can’t be beat.

We made great friends on this trip, biking, eating and laughing through Tuscany

This was the most fun! We were in Orvieto for the pretrip and had a great orientation with a local guide provided by VBT. What a lovely town and so walkable. This acclimated us to Italy and when the rest of the group and our guides arrived, the laughs began. The two women guides taught us some Italian each morning at the route review. The rides were beautiful to small towns and through poppy filled fields, olive groves and vineyards. We were given the inside scoop on the best GOD, gellato of the day, and had cultural experiences toward the end of the day. These included learning to taste wine at a vineyard, taste olive oil at an olive press and made biscotti. We all had signed up for the post trip in Rome, which was a superb experience, seeing many architetural, cultural and art treasures. It was so much fun that many of the group are regrouping for Valley of the Dolomites Italian ride in the summer 2012!

Great pace!

I loved it all, the accommodations, the leaders, the bikes but what really made it a super tour was the pace. We visited many fascinating places and I learned a lot. There was no “up in the morning to the olive groves, then cathedral, then city tour … then lunch.” We rode, then we toured, then we ate, then we rode some more – and we always ate gelato! It was a perfect way to see Italy.

This tour was great with the best leaders.

The tour Tuscany by the Sea was wonderful with great accomadations, really delicious meals and wine. Our two guides, Marco and Marcello, really made the trip special with their knowledge,,sense of humor, and help. They really seemed to go the exrtra mile for the group. The bikes and equipment were first rate. The route was spectactular. The weather was warmer than we expected and we would have preferred cooler weather for biking but do not think we can hold VBT responsible for that! On the other hand, if VBT could have influenced the weather, they would have! We have only high praise for this trip and the people who run and organize VBT.

Unforgettable sights such as Ptigliano! Leaders were outstanding.

Problem we encountered – one day there was a very steep climb.

My husband almost collapsed at the top; should have been
recommended he take the van which I did. It was very hot
and since he is a senior citizen as I am it would have been
appreciated.

We are traveling with VBT in Sept. to Austria, Slovenia &
Italy.

Everything as promised

Had a wonderful time! The bike rides were just challenging enough. The bicycles were adjusted to fit me just right and they were new. The trip leaders were beyond helpful and encouraging. They were always there when you needed them with smiles on there faces. The places we stayed and activities provided were fun and interesting. The food was exceptional. I would definitely recommend the pre and post trips. I can’t wait to go on another VBT tour! I recently re-read the brochure and it depicts the trip with great accuracy.

This tour was fun every single day!

The Tuscany by the Sea biking adventure was a treat from start to finish. Our Italian guides were helpful, kind, funny, organized, enthusiastic, and always available no matter what. They spoke beautiful English, but provided a truly Italian touch. They went above and beyond on every issue. The food was excellent at every meal. the wine plentiful and delicious, and the sights spectacular. The accommodations were top drawer but not luxurious. When I did this trip, we had some unexpected hot weather; extra cold water was provided, as was, for some, a ride back in the van. I had a wonderful time on this trip, and would recommend it to anyone who likes a good bike ride in beautiful terrain.

This tour was "so-so".

I took this tour about 3 years ago, so I don’t remember many specifics. However I thought that the itinerary was underwhelming and the rides were not awe inspiring.
Unfortunately the weather was hot and dry and the vegetation reflected this.
However, as usual the guides were excellent as were the accomodations.

Tuscany by the Sea

For the best bang for your buck, these tours can’t be beat- they are one of the few tour operators to include airfare. That being said, they may not include quite as many meals as other tours, but this is a minor consideration. The guides were outstanding and they can really make or break a trip. They were easy going, personable and fun to be with. They were also extremely knowledgeable about the area, the bike routes, the bikes themselves and pretty much everything else. I would highly recommend VBT to anyone looking for an active vacation with excellent accomondations and fabulous food.

Our first VBT tour but will not be our last.

The tour offered a lot of everything. Great scenery, excellent accommodation and food, lots of history with moderate but every now and then some challenging cycling.
The overall organisation of transportation and accommodation was excellent but the leadership and our fellow adventurers made the trip a wonderful lasting memory.

Tuscany by the Sea is a tour of a lifetime

My wife and I went with two good friends, one of which was celebrating her 40th birthday. We came home with 18 other friends whom we met on the tour! The food, riding, scenery, wine, comaraderie, peace, wine and olive tours, leadership, friendliness of the locals, flavor of the countryside, all made us want to move to Italy… we still dream of going back some day and show it to our children. Our guides were fantastic and the logistics perfect. Our perfect vacation! We really can’t say enough about it… Ciao, bella!

This review is for the Croatia bike trip from May 20 to June 1, 2011. I did Tuscany by the sea in 2007.

Our guides, Mattej and Lada were absolutely excellent. The trip surpassed my expectations, which we quite high, having done a VBT trip in 2007 (see note above). I particularly enjoyed the evening dining at Sophia or Sandra’s home. The chance to have have a meal in a Croatian home was really special.

The only criticism I have is that the water bottles this year are a bit tricky and have a tendency to “pinch” my lip. Not good when drinking and riding. Of course this is a very minor point, overall VBT again scores 10 out of 10.

Buon Appetito!

My first trip to Italy could not have been more memorable! Biking the Tuscan countryside, where vineyards are endless and sunflowers drape the hillsides, created an indelible memory of the beauty of Italy! Visiting wineries and olive groves to sample some of the best wines and olive oil as well as staying at an two agrotourismos (working farms) provided us with both a taste of Italy and the flavor of Italian culture. As a decendent of Italian immigrant grandparents, this was a dream come true!

Wonderful Tuscany

This tour was an excellent taste of Tuscany, Italy. Every day was a new adventure to somewhere different. The scenery was outstanding. The Tuscan countryside is amazingly beautiful! We visited charming hillside towns along the way. We went to an olive oil mill and were served a delicious lunch there. The places we stayed provided wonderful hospitality. It left me with such fond memories of Tuscany and definitely wanting to experience more.

This was a trip of a life time.

VBT provided a trip of a life time. VBT representatives and tour leaders provided excellent service throughout the pre trip, post trip and the tour itself. Our tour took us by fields of sunflowers, olive tree groves and old Tuscan villages. The accomodations and food were exellent. The tour leaders were so much fun. Everyone on the tour spent evenings laughing while dining over local cuisine.

Excellent value!

I am still talking about this vacation to my friends and family. I decided that I wanted to do something a little different from my normal vacation and I started looking around for some ideas. I ran across VBT on the internet and it looked exactly like what I was searching for. The whole experience was amazing. The hotels, the food, the guides, the rides, everything! I have to say, I don’t think there was anything negative about this trip. I have recommended this tour group to many of my friends and family so far. I am looking forward to taking another trip with VBT in the future, maybe to Croatia!

A dream come true

After being laid off from my job several years ago, I decided to put my severance check to good use….I bought a ticket to ride with VBT in Italy. It turned out to be a dream of a trip and worth every last cent I spent. The scenery, the food, the accommodations and the guides were beyond any expectations I could have imagined. I met some amazing folks on the tour, and still keep in touch with several of them to this day. VBT really puts together outstanding trips and takes care of pampering their guests at every stop along the way. I hope to be able to take another trip with VBT and friends in the near future. great food, great friends one hundered percent perfect

My trip to Italy was the first trip I took alone. It was truly an adventure. In the airport (in Rome) I met two couples who have remained friends since this first meeting. We have biking in common and a love of good food. Biking and great food were an important part of the Italy trip. I am not a super biker but I do enjoy good food and wine and there was plenty of it on our trip. My trip also included really comfortable guests houses, a visit and lunch to an olive factory, cooking a delicious meal with an Italian cook (translated by our bi-lingual guide) and many hours of interesting conversations with people who love to travel. Most of the other travelers had done VBT before and has many suggestions for future trips. This was such a great experience I booked another trip the following year.

Greatest Guides

The accomodations, food, landscape and entire experience were exceptional, but I have to mention the outstanding conduct of our guides. Our group was subjected to rain after a particularly dry spell. The limestone streets were terribly slick. Two people fell and broke bones. Our guides handled the situation, and the ensuing complicated logistics over the next few days, with superb compassion, grace and aplomb. Kudos to VBT for finding, hiring and retaining this level of professional guide.

Italy at its best as seen over the handlebars! ,

Great views, luscious meals, funny and supportive guides for an adventurous trip up the rolling hills of Tuscany and down to the sea. Evenings at agriturisimos provided a unique perspective to the rural Italian life. An olive mill at the top of a hill set out a spectacular spaghetti lunch made with the freshest ingredients . . . better than any four-star restaurant. And the pre-trip stay in Orvieto was a great introduction to the relaxed pace of the Italian lifestyle. We’ve enjoyed several VBT tours but Tuscany by the Sea was the tops!

A Wonderful Vacation

We had a wonderful experience on this tour, and on the Rome extension. Robert and Sylvia were excellent tour guides, very patient and friendly. Our tour group was exceptionally friendly, fun and fit! We had a great time together, on the tour and in Rome. The hotels were very nice. The two city hotels, the Duomo in Orvieto and Giuliocesare in Rome were very well located. Our trip to Giglio and our ride to Capablio were among the highlights.
A word about Rome: our VBT recommended guide, Frank, was a big factor in making our three days in Rome a success. He is very knowledgable about Roman history, and provided a lively and informative narrative. He is a real intellectual, speaks 11 languages and is a master of Roman logistics. We will recommend him to all of our friends who travel to Rome.

Tuscany by the Sea

We truly enjoyed the biking and had wonderful tour leaders.
I wish we had biked every day and not taken the ferry to the Island for example. I don’t think that was worth it; we spent too much time there. If there was a way to shorten time involved in the excursion trips and biked more we would have enjoyed it much more. However, we are taking another trip and certainly felt well cared for by staff and tour arrangements (such as being picked up at the airport). Thank you.

Exceptional VBT Value Every Time!

Tuscany by the Sea was my second VBT trip, following California Wine Country last summer. Both wildly exceeded my expectations from the scenery, cycling opportunities, immaculate organization and direction from the guides, wonderful accomodations, and incredible food, to my tripmates. These trips have been the best vacations of my life because they combine relaxation, as all your needs are cared for, with healthy outdoor activity and exploration with 19 of your new best friends, plus the guides. I would highly recommend a VBT biking trip to anyone who wants the opportunity for activity with little responsibility, and permission to eat whatever you want because you’ve earned it!

The Wonders of Agroturismo

This tour sets the standard for all bicycle tours. The leaders were very knowledgeable and helpful and the other folks on the tour were all eccentric and fun. The working vineyards and farms were fascinating and beautiful-as was the wine and the food. The beauty of the Tuscan coast is unparalleled.

beautiful slice of Italy to enjoy on a bike and with great food and fine wine what is not to like?

this was our second tour with VBT. We consider our tour companions a very important part of any trip. We were not disappointed. Again we found ourselves with a great cross section of people all of whom we enjoyed sharing this adventure with. The biking terrain had something for any level. However, i would point out the “rolling hills” of Tuscany have a few more cork screws than Iowa’s rolling hills. Our informed and friendly leaders were a bonus. We are glad we went and are looking forward to another VBT trip.

A fantastic introduction to Europe!

I was both a first time VBT tour participant and traveler to Europe and the trip was wonderful. The biking was challenging but took us through beautiful landscapes — my only trip regret is that I really couldn’t stop often enough to take advantage of all of the photo ops.

VBT arranged a stop at an olive oil factory, which was a highlight. We learned a lot (and ate a lot) and thoroughly enjoyed a memorable visit. I’ll never look at olive oil casually again, and I’ll always wish I could make pasta and bruschetta that compares with our lunch that day.

Excellent from start to finish

There is so little to criticize that saying all that is excellent would be a very long list. Beyond the obvious: great accomodations, incredible food, terrific tour leaders; the pacing was perfect. We were never rushed and always had down time every day. There was an extra something every day also. We loved that we were not going to tourist traps all the time. We were thrilled to met Tuscans who were as happy to see us as we were to see them. Those are some of the best memories. I am sure we experienced a part of Tuscany that would be difficult to experience an any other way.
We already have a reservation in for another tour for next year.

My first tour bears repeating

Tuscany by the Sea was my first tour with VBT. My desire to visit Tuscany was a result of the appreciation for good, fresh and healthy food that I’ve developed from growing my own produce. Tuscany was a wonderful melding of bicycling (my favorite exercise), great food and a relaxing pastoral setting. Add to that 2 warm and always helpful VBT guides and my anticipation of a great time was realized. We finished the trip in Rome before our airport departure. We managed to see a lot of the city with a minimum of Euros. Our VBT tour guide in Rome shared the his expertise on getting around so we could make the most of our short visit. I am planning and looking forward to my next VBT trip. I recommend adding on the tour extension to make the most of your trip.

The VBT Tuscany by the Sea trip was exceptional. The attention to detail, unique experiences, beautiful countryside, and outstanding food make this a must do trip. Our guides, Silvia and Robert, made the trip extra special. My mom and I made many wonderful new friends with each and every person in our group. We also have lifelong memories of Tuscany and the wondeful Italian people. Thank you VBT for making this dream trip a reality.

This tour is perfect for those wanting to experience Tuscany

From the time we met our tour leaders until we left them, everything happened smoothly without feeling rushed. The rides were sufficiently challenging for all but not too easy either. The hill towns were wonderful and the trips to the coast provided time to cool down in the sea. Learning to make some local foods was especially fun. The swimming pools were a delight at the end of the day.

Tuscany by the Sea

This was an amazing adventure!! The trip of a lifetime !! This was our 1st VBT tour and as my husband says..we’re never going on another vacation unless it’s VBT!! We travel every year and always stay at 5 star resorts and this tour certainly fit the bill but included more fun! Every aspect of the vacation was exceptional! Each day was packed with something new and exciting with wonderful, friendly guides and superb service wherever we were. We love to experience any country we visit and VBT allows you to do this in the most unique way possible. We saw unbelievable sites and spectacular, breathtaking country. Every inn and hotel we stayed at were just beautiful, immaculate, and conveniently located with delicious meals and friendly, helpful staff. Our bike tour leaders were always there to help ,inform, and accommodate any need. They became our friends as did the other members of our great tour group. We miss them!! We felt very pampered and taken care of. We did the Rome extension on our package and were so glad we did. A VBT quide mapped out an itinerary for our 3 days there that allowed us to see all the sites and it was so helpful. We just can’t say enough good things about this trip! Only that we wish we’d stared VBTing a long time ago!!! Can’t wait to book our next adventure!!!

Best vacation ever!

Just arrived home yesterday and am already thinking about which VBT tour my wife and I will take next year!

Our group of 16 was more than ably led by two outstanding individuals — Marco and Marchello. Their patience and sense of humour kept our crew together during some very warm days of riding.

The hotels VBT booked were outstanding, and the pools in Tuscany were a welcome site every afternoon after the day’s ride ended.

Great fun and a truly memory experience

This was a GREAT trip!

This was a great trip–my second with VBT! Beautiful setting, inspiring views of Tuscany, and great bicycling. The routes were fun and challenging (maybe more moderate than easy), although every day there were easier options for those who wanted. The argiturismo settings varied from “resort-like” to rustic and authentic. The tour leaders were terrific, supportive, and easily accessible for any needs. I’d recommend that anyone taking this trip train enough to do the “gradual” 11 mile ascent to Scansano—it’s challenging (especially in 95 degrees!), but well worth it for the views and the accomplishment!

This was the best trip I've ever been on!!!

Being a single woman on a trip, I was a little hesitant to go on this trip. But, I had many friends that encouraged me to go. Right from the start, I was greeted in Rome by a very friendly guide. I even met two couples there that I became friendly with. The transfers were timely and very clean. The hotel accommodations proved to be excellent. Our two tour guides, Sylvia and Andrea were outstanding. They were there to help and motivate every bike rider. The countryside was magnificent! I can’t wait to go again next summer!!!

Outstanding organization and leadership

Our lodging was always far nicer than expected. The cycling conditions (bicycles, roads, driver courtesy, scenery, terrain) left nothing to be desired. Our two leaders (Franco and Angelo) were superb: organized, personable, hard-working, and efficient. I don’t recall a single snafu – everything went smoothly, and the small details such as airport and hotel transfers were a great convenience. The last two cycling days were among the best riding experiences I have had in forty-plus years.

This trip was one of the best vacations I have ever taken.

At first the biking was harder than I thought it would be. However, on the last day of the trip I was sorry to see it end. The Tuscan countryside left indelible images in my mind. The fields of wheat and sunflowers were awesome. The walled hilltop cities were a pleasure to tour and spend time in. Swimming in the Mediterrean Sea was great as well.

Each day was well thought out and filled with one adventure after another. Everyone in our group came away with positive perspectives.

WOW ! ! !

Incredible scenery, excellent guides, and a most compatible group to bike with…what more could you ask for on a bike trip? Oh, I forgot to mention the wonderful Italian food, far-beyond-comfortable lodging, great selection of extensions, sites and landmarks to see and good back road routes and bike paths on which to ride. We greatly appreciated the way we were assisted at every point of the trip while preserving our own independence…airport transfers, helpful and knowledgeable biking and city guides and the always-available bike sag van. Having native Italian guides without doubt enriched our trip experiences significantly. Staying in every hotel/inn for three nights minimized packing and handling time and increased the opportunities for activities and site visits. A fabulous trip at a great dollar value! WOW !

Great Trip, Good Value

Our tour was held during one of the hottest weeks in Italian history, yet it is still one of the most memorable. Our trip leaders were knowledgeable and made everyone welcome. So welcome that I forgot to get my usual twinge of homesickness. The accommodations selected by VBT were great. The tour, pre and post tour hotels were some of the best we have visited ( Europe or USA ) and very well staffed. Any one of them would have been a destination vacation in itself.

Bellissima

I had a great time on this trip. After bicycling several hours each day, I indulged myself with all the beer, vino, pasta, and gelato that I wanted. The group was fun and the trip leaders were, well, a trip. Sometimes we were on roads that were a bit busier than I would have liked, but never for very long before we turned off onto more peaceful and scenic venues. Oh, and an added delight of this trip was the fine swimming pools and the three Mediterranean beaches we visited.

This was our first biking vacation and it won't be our last!

This tour exceeded our expectations. We were pampered by our VBT tour guides. The scenery was breathtaking. The food was fabulous. The daily trips were carefully planned to accommodate all riding levels. The bikes were extremely comfortable and were versatile to all terrains covered on the tour. It is apparent that VBT is very selective when choosing hotels, daily excursions, menus and experienced tour guides. A biking vacation is an experience like no other. This is my first vacation where I could eat and drink to my hearts content and not gain an ounce.

Amazing experience!

My husband and I wanted to do something special this summer and last minute jumped in to the Italy by the coast tour. I couldn’t be happier we did.
The VBT team took care of everything, the last minute air reservations – and still got us great itineraries-, the transportation, the lodging… The bike rides were amazing and so were the views, the food and the group. The bike rides were amazing and ver much doable. Our Italian tour guides: Marco and Marcelo were out of this word. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for an different and more active Italian vacation.

This tour was the perfect exposure to local Tuscan charm

After having been to Vermont and Maine with VBT, my wife and I were excited to experience Italy through the same personalized approach. Our tip leaders, Robert and Elena, did a wonderful job of looking out for us, connecting us with local treasures, and sharing their love of the countryside and biking with the group. From our bikes, the hill-top Tuscan towns were both tantalizingly close and majestically distant. The food at the agriturisimos was delicious and fresh…..and the tours of the wineries, olive oil tasting, and the grounds of Fattoria di Magliano were unique experiences and quintessentially Tuscan. Bravo !

a wonderful way to experience italian culture

This trip was a wonderful blend of experiences from small coastal towns to Rome. For one of the routes, the cycling was challenging, yet do-able for a recreational rider. I wished the trip had a bit more cycling – we had 4 days of riding.

Trip of a lifetime

What do you say about a trip that you and your husband went on with 8 of your very best friends? What do you say about a trip with glorious weather, accomodations, food, wine, and scenery? What do you say about 2 of the most fun, outstanding guides, ever? You say it just may have been the trip of a lifetime!

Outstanding tour leaders, unique accommodations and picturesque rides

It was another wonderful trip with VBT. Our tour leaders were fabulous, such fun to be with and always so helpful. I loved the agriturisma and the fattoria where we stayed. Both had excellent food and we had time to relax with our group. And our day at Giglio Island was so memorable. Do not miss the pre-trip to the charming town of Orvieto with its Duomo, its underground caves, its ceramics shops and many fine restaurants. This trip was capped of by 3 days in Rome where our guide, Frank, filled us with the history of the city. He was an added bonus! I recommend this trip to anyone who wants the complete experience – great biking, great meals, great beaches, great leaders, great accommodations and lots of culture!

What more can one ask for? Great food, great wine and beautiful rides everyday. Oh, the folks are the trip were also so much fun.

Italy holds a special place in my heart since I was married in Florence many years ago. I have returned a few times, but I never experienced the food, wine and scenery in such a wonderful manner as biking thru this beautiful country. Tuscany by the Sea offers amazing views on or off the bike. I think my favorite ride was thru the Pine Forrest then swimming on the prettiest beach I have ever been on with really warm, clean water.

I wish I were still in Tuscany!

Excellent bike routes with gorgeous views interspersed with fantastic food and awesome leaders.

This was my 4th bike trip with VBT but this time I brought along 11 of my friends to share the experience with us. We all had a fantastic time biking, talking, swimming, and eating together. The bike routes were extremely scenic, climbing to the top of the hills and then enjoying the wind in your face as you plunge down the hill on the other side. Our trip leaders were extremely knowledgeable about the history of the area, were on top of every detail, and were a joy to be with. What is not to like–good friends, food, and biking!

Amazing and memorable experience with VBT!

We can’t stop thinking about our trip to Tuscany with VBT! My wife and I have done extensive bike touring, including a 4000 mile cross country trip sleeping in corn fields and camping in the woods. We weren’t sure if a guided trip would be for us. Well, as I mentioned, we can’t stop talking about what an amazing time we had. Our Italian guides, Marcello and Angelo, were the most friendly people imaginable. They took us to places that we would never have found on our own, and kept us laughing the whole time with their fabulous personalities. The biking was spectacular, with just the right amount of mileage to leave the rest of the day to relax by the pool or explore Magliano, a nearby fortified mountaintop town. Tuscany is an amazing and magical place and we were given the royal treatment there. For three of the days we stayed at the most amazing agriturismo farm where they grow and make almost all of the food they serve…and what a feast!!! I don’t have enough space to explain how amazing the food was (and we even got to make our own biscotti). At another place we stayed, they had their own vineyard with amazing wine. There was wine tasting and swimming in the pool surrounded by gardens after a day of riding thru the Tuscan countryside. All I can say is AMAZING! We will definitely be going with VBT again!!! Thank You VBT for making out 20th anniversary PERFECT!

Great Food and Accommodations

The cycling part of this tour is not for people who have only ridden on trails. The Italian drivers and bad surfaced roads make the riding on this tour scary. For a rider who does ride on the road and is a fairly strong rider, there are not many challenges. Aside from the cycling, this tour is fabulous with outstanding Tuscan food and great places to stay. The organization of the tour and the tour guides are also fantastic. The guides are fluent in Italian and English and help you learn Italian expressions and the language. The agri-tourism “farms” provide luxurious accommodations along with a country feel. This tour is really fun and well worth the price.

Response from: Product Development

Thank you for your review. We’re very glad that you enjoyed your Tuscany vacation. Our travelers find that a little practice riding on roads is helpful in order to get accustomed to sharing the road. We do our best to offer more challenging, optional rides on most days of all of our tours. Your Trip Leaders can be a great resource in this department, as they are locals and know the area and terrain as well as anyone. Thanks again for your review and we hope that you’ll join us again.

What an incredible trip.

Every morning I wake up and dream about the beautiful places that we biked in Tuscany by the Sea. The discovery day on Giglio Island was my favorite. As I speak Italian I was able to talk with the various merchants on the Island and truly learn so much more about the little resort of Campese. That evening was so special as we chose a local restaurante which only served fresh fish from the sea. The accomodations on this trip were extrordinary.

Wonderful trip, great food and wine and the scenery was the best part!

This bike tour of the three that I have taken was the best one so far. The biking was changelling, the other guests were very welcoming and fun, the tour guides were very helpful and fun to be with and the food and wine were the best. I loved the small island and towns that we visited which gave you a really good insight to small town life in Italy.

Serenity in a trip that takes you back in time

It has been about four weeks since my September biking adventure, “Tuscany by the Sea”. I am still haunted by the beauty of the rolling hills, the views of the blue Mediterranean, and the charm of the medieval walled towns that graced the mountain tops. I still smell the grove of eucalyptus trees as I pedaled the narrow country road. Riding a bicycle gave me the opportunity to navigate the tiny cobblestone paths within the Etruscan built towns and taste the grapes ready for harvest in the field. I had traveled to the Tuscany tourist areas years ago. This trip was special and very different.

My senses were awakened each day with a route that not only expanded my historical perspective, but transported me to a simpler time. The smells of the sea and the farms, the taste of olive oil and spaghetti at the Andreini Mill, the feel of the cork bark on a cork tree, the sounds of church bell towers, and of course the sights of the Sea and Giglio Island ….overwhelmed me on my VBT journey.

I will always remember the exhileration from pedaling miles, the bond of new friends, and most of all the feeling that I had been transported to the true heart of Tuscany. This was an amazing trip….well planned and designed….a true taste of Italy past and present.

We didn't want to go home!

My husband and I have been wanting to incorporate our love of travel and cycling together for a long time and Tuscany is the place we have always talked about going to. We are so glad we finally just did it! What a beautiful place to go and the perfect way to see the country side while enjoying the incredible views without being rushed. We thought that if we biked each day we would not have to worry about the amount of pasta we ate or the wine that we drank, whoops! We did not lose any weight on this trip and it was well worth every bite and sip!
We have discussed our experience, a lot, and are so glad that we extended on both ends of the trip. VBT made it so easy with the transfers and all of the logistics of the entire trip. We were able to see and do things that we would not have on our own. It took all the stress out of our vacation. We are among others that are trying to decide where we want to go on our next VBT vacation!

A most excellent experience

Everything was extremely well-organized and all the details were taken care of. From the moment I left home until the moment I got back VBT had thought of everything. The trip leaders, Elena and Angelo, were fun an extremely knowledgeable. The pacing of the riding was excellent — we had the opportunity to ride long rides for two days, then a break the third day to visit a museum in the morning and just ride in the afternoon. Then two more days of long rides. Very well done. The van was always there with snacks and to offer a ride. I would have no hesitation recommending this tour. Truly wonderful!

Tuscany by the Sea - fantastico!

Marcello and Elena were fabulous! Our parting memory of them waving us off from the porch of the agritourismo will linger long after other memories have faded. Like living in a movie or a dream ...

I have wanted to take a trip to Italy for so very long. Sometimes reality can not live up to expectations, however, this trip exceeded my expectations. It was everything I had hoped for and dreamed about and more. Each hotel provided a different and wonderful experience. The bicycle tour leaders were so personable that we were all sad to leave them behind. Additionally, they did their jobs so well that you hardly noticed until you looked around for your water bottle only to find it had been filled while you weren’t looking. Tuscany and Umbria – well just imagine that Italian hand gesture for “molto bene”.

Great Italien Adventure

Our gang of twenty friends and acquaintances – all first time travelers with VBT, with bicycling backgrounds ranging from less experienced to expert – had a wonderful time on our “Tuscany by the Sea” adventure,

Individually we came away with countless great memories of Tuscany, Orvieto and Rome The fabulous Agri Tourism accomodations had all the creature comforts including fabulous breakfast buffets and some very memorable dinners
and let us experience the Tuscan way of life.

Our two wonderful guides not only saw to it that all our needs were met and that we stayed on track with our ambitious biking and sight-seeing schedules, they took us off the beaten path and shared their rich heritage with us. They made the experience fun, meaningful, and it will forever stand out in our memories.

The trip included a pre and post trip to Orvieto and to Rome where we stayed in very nice and conveniently located hotels and made the most of sightseeing.

For me it was the trip of a life-time, physically and mentally challenging and a lot of fun.

Top of the line tour in all categories of the trip

My career in the Air Force took me all over the world and as an active sports lady I sailed for 7 years, skied in many countries & USA, joined long distance walkers for 9 years and walk for general exercise, did scuba diving and climbed a few mountains. This was my first group biking trip to Tuscany by the Sea. For my age I am in good physical shape but this was a challenge.Believe me this was one of the top trips I have ever taken based on the super organizational skills & planning of the VBT staff. The biking group was so compatible and our Leaders were top notch. Great food/lodging/equipment/roads traveled/tours and care. I rate this activity and VBT as #1.

The hotels & food were amazing. The biking was good for all levels.

I really enjoyed all aspects of this trip. The biking was definitely intermediate but for those of us that were beginners it was fun and we knew we could get in the van at any point. The places we stayed were a great representation of the local areas. All were definitely 4 stars. Some small rooms but very clean and the most hospitable places that I have stayed. Always had our own bathroom.
I can’t tell you how wonderful our trip leaders Eleana and Marcello were. They were very knowledgeable and also very much fun.
I highly recommend this trip for anyone. Italy is a beautiful country with nice people and when they hear you are VBT you are definitely treated as a VIP.

Post trip in Rome

The bike tour and guides on the trip of course were outstanding. But what really set this trip over the top for me was the VBT recommended tour guide who showed us the city on a walking tour one day and the next took us on an insider’s tour of the Vatacan Museum and Sistine Chapel. The guide knew the best time to visit the Vatacan, the top rooms of priceless art to view, detailed art critic level information of the art we were viewing and above all the best time to be in the Sistine Chapel. We were in the chapel as it was virtually empty then given views into the pope’s private chambers when the chapel was closed for the evening. You wouldn’t see or experience Rome with such enthusiasm from any guide. Thanks VBT for offering the best guide for your tour groups.

Buonissimo

What a wonderful way to explore Italy! We loved Tuscany – the scenery, the food, the people, the wine, the many experiences that were made available to us. Our leaders: Robert and Elena were phenomenal. They put a lot of effort into making our trip seamless, yet made it seem easy. They were fun, knowledgeable and very helpful. After biking a few hours, we were met with a wonderful snack and refilled water bottles. A few more hours and a picnic lunch and a dip in the Mediterranean, or a homemade lunch at an olive oil mill…… The places we stayed at were lovely, the food was amazing. We were also lucky to have a fun group and enjoyed the comraderie. We truly felt immersed in Tuscany. A few days in Rome in the end was the icing on the cake – so glad we decided to do that. We would love to take another VBT trip in the future.

GOOD TRIP ( in need of another name )

Fun leaders, friendly-off the beaten path accommodations, good home cooked meals. Overall a decent trip EXCEPT for the fact that the name of the trip is completely inaccurate. You will ride through the rolling hills of Tuscany but if you had your heart set on riding BY THE SEA (like I did) you will be sadly disappointed. PLEASE make another choice if this is the reason for picking this specific trip.
Buyer beware…

Wow, what an experience. I am blessed to have had the opportunity to experience Tuscany this way. Our guides, Marcello and Oliver were incredible, their knowledge of the area was unsurpassed. A trip of a lifetime

There is no better way to see the countryside of Tuscany. Another advantage of a biking vacation in Italy – how else can you see the country while eating as much pasta as you want and indulge in a little wine and not gain weight on a vacation! The guides were knowledgable and great fun. Even as a novice biker, I was made to feel comfortable.

Best vacation ever!

The Tuscany by the sea tour was absolutely the best, stress-free way to have a European vacation. The trip had scheduled stops and opportunities to meet local people but I never felt rushed for time. The morning meetings with our guides were informative and fun to learn about Italian life and some quirks, too. The accomodations were really great and the food fantastic. I’ve visited Europe before on my own but this trip gave much more of a feel for real-life in Tuscany.

Relax and ride in the country side and rolling hills of Tuscany white inhaling the fresh Mediterranean air. Enjoy the fresh organic delights at each tattoria you grow to love. Savor the delicious Tuscan wines and olive oils. Be educated by Elena and Marco, the most amazing leader. Finish with time in Rome, a city that never ends or sleeps. We had a great time. The scenery was amazing (like being in a picture postcard of Tuscany), the biking was just the right combination of relaxing and challenging, the food was incredible, and our guides were first rate. We had enough time to explore the beautiful villages, swim in the ocean, and eat in the local restaurants. All in all, it was one of the best vacations we have ever had.

This trip lived up to ALL of our expectations!

This trip was a 50th birthday gift from my husband. I’m now 54! Life happens and somehow we just couldn’t commit to the trip. Well, we finally just booked it and travelled in October 2012. It was fantastic! The weather cooperated (sunny and 70’s), the accommodations were wonderful, the towns we visited were charming and each day the bike routes were well thought out and lovely.

We were there during the olive harvest and enjoyed fresh pressed olive oil and a wonderfully planned lunch. All the meals that were provided were great!

Having planned this trio for so long, we jokingly thought it could never live up to our expectations…we were SO wrong. It was everything we could have expected and more. Thanks VBT for making this an incredible experience for us. Every detail was thought out and we could truly just relax and take in the whole experience without worrying about a thing!

beautiful scenery, incredible food and wine

The tour guides were wonderful and know whatever you need to know about each town we visited. For me, it was ‘the location of best gelato shop’. Each hotel was charming and special in it’s own way. The option of taking the van at any point is nice, since i’m not an avid bicyclist (I hardly ever ride!) But, I was surprised how many miles I was willing/able to pedal…perhaps because of the comfort of the bicycles! The daily routes appear to be hand-picked according to the scenery and lack of traffic. In terms of value, it was worth every penny. I’m going on and on, and I haven’t even mentioned the wonderful food and wine yet! I could go on and on…..

"Under the Tuscan Sun"

My husband and I took our first VBT tour in Tuscany. It was the most fun we have ever had. I am not a cyclist by any means, but this trip through the gently rolling hills of Tuscany, past olive trees, sunflower fields and grapevines was breathtaking. Our guides Luca and Elena were fantastic giving us lessons in Italian and even pushing me the last little bit up a hill into a winery for lunch. The food was was spectacular. Making cantucci at La Parinna was a highlight; so was eating it. VBT does a first rate job. I look forward to the next trip.

Everything I hoped for

Though I am not a “biker”, I’ve always wanted to go to Tuscany and found this tour online for the time I could travel. I went with some other friends whose husbands also could not go. We had a blast! Loved our small, friendly group and our guides, Marcello and Christian…I cannot rave about them enough!! They absolutely made the trip from wonderful to spectacular! They are funny, kind, informative, and could not be better company or more accommodating! As far as the biking, it was ok to get in the van to avoid some more difficult hills, which I appreciated. I prepared for the trip with a few months of spinning classes, which were most necessary and helpful for me. The actual biking though not always “easy”, was MUCH more enjoyable than those spinning classes for me :). Still gained a couple of pounds from all that delicious food, but it was completely worth it! All the accommodations were extremely comfortable and top notch…Everything was as described and more!

Words can not explain the amazing experience that I had on this tour. Firstly, the tour guides, Marcello and Christen did everything for you but peddle the bike. The tour was extremely well organized from morning through evening. The hotel accomodations were top notch including their delicious fresh food. I truly beleive that after spending 6 days in Tuscany riding, eating and drinking the outrageous wines, I was able to get a true feelng for the culture in a way I would not have been able to experience had I went on my own.

This tour must rank as the best of the three VBT tours I have taken.

What I especially enjoyed about this tour were the pacing and variety of the activities, beginning in the unique little city of Orvieto (I took the pre-trip extension) and ending in Rome. Highlights in Orvieto were the Duomo (Signorelli’s Apocalype in the Chapel of San Brizio was actually studied by and gave inspiration to Michelangelo), Saint Patrick’s Well, the Etruscan caves, and the open-air market. The three days and nights at the charming Antica Fattoria La Parrina were a pure delight with fine Italian cuisine, free wine!, optional horseback riding, and a cooking lesson. Every day while there, and later at Fattoria Magliano, was filled with a variety of events, including a dip in the Tyrrhnian Sea, a tour of a winery and a wine tasting, a tour of an olive oil mill, a ferry ride to Giglio Island (our captain swung wide to within a hundred yards of the ill-fated Costa Concordia!), a refreshing nature walk on the island, and walking visits through several medieval hill towns. For the most part the biking was easy; countryside scenery and sea vistas were indescribably beautiful, enhanced by five straight days of perfectly clear skies and relatively mild temperatures. Group members were exceptionally compatible, the tour leaders were great. A tremendous value for the money, this VBT tour was the best I’ve taken!

Fantastic Experience! We want to go again!

We had a fabulous time on this trip. Wonderful scenery, great towns to visit. Wished we could have done a little more area than just tuscany but you can only bike so far. The hills were not something we were used to but adapted quickly. Trip leaders Andrea and Silvia were fun and they learned all our names amazingly within the first few hours. They were very helpful and accomodating to all people in our group. Accommodations were nice and we really had no complaints but a few others on the trip did. Food was wonderful, all the meals included were excellent. Even all the places we ate that were recommended were good. It wasn’t fun to get picked up in Rome at 3:20am on our departing day though!

Everything was taken care of from booking the air travel and all accomodations, including the add on trip at the end, making it a truly stress free vacation. This was our 6th tour with VBT. We followed this with the VBT Italy, Slovenia, Austria tour with a stop in Prague prior to the second trip. The Tuscany trip is great. The roads and routes are wonderful. I am an avid cyclist and while VBT doesn’t cater to this group, I love their tours because I can make them whatever I like and still enjoy the social aspects the tour. The leaders are sensitive to each guest. The back to back approach turned out to be the best decision. We did our pre/post trip at the start and finish of the second tour. VBT planned everything including the air reservations from Rome to Prague. We are planning another back to back tour either later this year or next.

Tuscany By the Sea - exceeded my expectations

Our recent bike trip with VBT – Tuscany By the Sea was wonderful.
The accommodations were lovely set in vineyards and working farms. The lodging was private and you felt like the hosts wanted to make it special for us. The biking was great and our guides, Elena and Robert were very encouraging and supportive. I was one of the least experienced bikers in the group of 18 and the guides were willing to help in any way. I thought the tour had a nice mix of biking and culture. We were treated to wonderful Italian food. It was fun meeting others from around the country. I hope that some day we can do another trip with VBT.

I would highly recommend this trip. As this was my first one, I was a little leary but it was great. since I have gotten back, everyone has asked me my favorite part and I can’t answer that as every day was great. The 2 guides were fantastic as well. can’t wait to take another VBT trip next year.

A truly awesome experience!

We loved everything about this trip. The pre trip to Orvieto was like finding a hidden gem of a town and a great way to meet the others before the bike trip began. The biking was very “doable”, as our trip leader said many times. The scenery was beautiful and we loved the variety of activities. It was not just biking. We swam in the Mediterranean, toured an olive oil factory, made cookies and pizza, had a tour of the castle on San Giglio Island, ate picnic lunches, tasted wines to die for, and all our needs were taken care of. Knowing the support van was available made us more relaxed. The people were fun, personable and great to be with. What more can we say?

What a fantastic trip!!!

The rides, the countryside, the leaders, the group, the accommodations and the food…spectacular! The guides were attentive to every detail. There is little more to say except that we are already talking about our next VBT trip.

Good fun, exercise, food, wine and new friends!

The trip exceeded expectations. Accommodations were comfortable, charming and well located. The food was excellent and the local venues were interesting. The rides were exhilarating with beautiful vistas at each turn . This was the perfect trip for me. I’m looking forward to more VBT in the near future. With so many to choose from, I’m not sure which trip will be at the top of my list.

Bravisimo! What else can one say?!

Grazie for a fantastic trip in every way—the land, the people, the food, the accommodations, the itinerary and of course, our fabulous guides who had the right mixture of attentiveness, knowledge of the history and area and wonderful sense of humor! All our hosts went out of their way to welcome us, feeding us fine FRESH Italian foods and wine and sharing their fattorias! Tuscans repeatedly proved to be the friendliest and most passionate hosts around. Definitely a dream come true and I will have to add more VBT trips to my “bucket list” now!

Wow! A trip of a lifetime

We were entirely satisfied with our Tuscany bike trip. We don’t know how we could have improved on it. The lodgings, food, transfers, sights, extensions. It was all very good. The trip leaders were exceptional and very hard working. Definitely good value. We are already planning our next trip with VBT.

The best adult vacation I've been on

This trip held the perfect mix of activity, shopping, new experiences, great food and congenial people. Franko & Marchello were fabulous guides. They took good care of us as well as providing entertainment and guidance. The bike rides were well planned with clear maps and directions and the right amount of stops to make it more than just another ride. We stayed at or visited farms which were charming and hospitable. I can’t imagine I will soon forget the Tuscan hills, the Mediterranean Sea or the laughter from our trip.

good trip, lodging selections could have been better

over all, had a lot of fun and enjoyed the trip. Tour leaders were great, thoughtful and energetic. Equipment was good and the rides were well mapped and easy to follow. Degree of difficulty was as described… easy to moderate. The days were filled w/ varied activities and we were all kept engaged.
However, lodging was definitely the weak area of the trip. room size, available water for showers, a/c problems all detracted from the experience. some of the food selections and wines provided were barely acceptable, at best. I was expecting to be blown away by the food in Tuscany… and the wines of the region…..not so. perhaps someone needs to look into upgrading the selections, I think future tours would appreciate that.

Response from: Product Team

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We are disappointed to hear that the accommodations and food provided, and the wine offered, did not meet your expectations. The vast majority of guests on this trip have had a positive experience with 89.61% rating their dinners as “excellent” and 77.23% rating their accommodations as “excellent”. We hope that you will give us the opportunity to serve you again.

The bike tour had so much variety

The 12 days spent on this tour were more enjoyable and fulfilling than I ever imagined it would be. We were very fortunate to have gorgeous weather, a congenial group and excellent trip leaders.
The biking was fun and rather challenging for me (I’m not young), but it was perfect because I knew the van with a helpful and smiling driver was behind me.
We did so much more than biking! The sunset boat cruise, the olive oil plant, the cantucci we made, the picnics, the excursion to Giglio Island, and so much more. I could go on and on.
And then to end with Rome, a city I had not visited, was frosting on the cake.

Loved the trip!

Loved the accommodations and food. Guides were wonderful. Tour itself was great area and relaxing bicycling. Alitalia was awful, nasty people, poor food, wouldn’t honor our seating assignments we had and gave us middle seats not sitting together.

Fantastic experience in every way

Although I have travelled extensively, this was the first time I travelled with VBT. I can’t say enough positive things about it. The leaders were clearly experienced, knowledgable, caring, very organized, had wonderful senses of humor and great people skills. The activities were varied and plentiful, with options to relax or do do do. Every place we went was interesting and the intimate knowledge the leaders had and their rapport with the locals couldn’t be replicated. Just an all together fabulous trip.

A great combination of cycling, scenery, and sea.

This was a great way to experience the beauty of Tuscany. Though some of the routes were challenging due to hills, there was always a reward for the pedaling: great food, an idyllic swim in the Meditteranean Sea, or a hilltop town with old charm and spectacular views.
The trip leaders, Marcello and Elena were top notch. We were well cared for and ably guided.

Amazing

From start to finish our Tuscany by the Sea was amazing. Our leaders Marcello and Angelo were perfect. Fun, Funny, caring, knowledgeable. They helped meld our group of riders and semi riders into a team. I felt a real bound with each and every person on our tour and my husband and I had not met any of them previously.
The Agroturismos we stayed in were fantastic, as was the food and the wine.
This trip was a dream and not only lived up to my expectations but surpassed them.
Thanks VBT, Marcello, and Angelo

Top five vacation experience

We have traveled quite a bit, and I would call this an experience more than a vacation. Meeting the tour guides and Hoteliers was great, oh yeah and then there was the other travel companions..there was nothing not to like about this tour Tuscany by the Sea. We did the pre and post trip, both great- even the many places we had never heard of before like Orvieto, it was delightful. The bicycling was great, as were the bikes. We are hoping our friends will go on another tour this Spring, if they can’t go, we will go anyway! Thinking about the bike and barge in Holland.

I had a very enjoyable trip and it was both educationall and culturally rewarding

The only downside, which really did not distract from the overall enjoyment, was an attempted pick-pocket of my wallet!!! They did not get my wallet but would like to suggest that the tour guides give folks some warnings about this while riding the subways in Rome on post- or pre-tour visits. It was a great experience.

Second time around is even better!

Been on 8 VBT tours since 2004. All so good that we have enticed 20 other “virgins” to VBT to join us over the years. They in turn have enticed lots of others as well as returning often themselves. It is exponential!
This last trip we joined with all 4 of our “kids” (46-53 ages) for another special and fabulous time…very special thanks to Franko and Angelo.
Keep up the good work!

Surpassed my expectations!

I was convinced to try a bike vacation in Italy by my sister, and although apprehensive as I don’t typically ride — I said yes. This trip was so much fun. Everything from the funny and very interesting and knowledgeable guides that VBT provided us, to the places we stayed and learned about; The biking and food was top notch. I enjoyed Italy having never been, but mostly I enjoyed all of the many different aspects of this vacation. I highly recommend it.

Great variety of terrain, food, and activities

This particular tour is phenomenal if you’re looking for a variety of terrains (both flat, hilly, and in between), settings (coastal, forest, countryside, farm, etc), and food. There are so many choices of activities besides cycling. There is a cooking class, horseback riding, pool, etc. We toured etruscan tombs and tasted cheese, wine, etc. Something for everyone. I give this tour the highest marks for everything except value because Tuscany is not by any means the cheapest part of Italy. The cost of the tour (flight included) is a great value. However, some meals are not included and this has to be factored into the cost of the trip. Overall, an excellent trip. We made many friends on the tour and still keep in touch!

Above and beyond our expectations!

Our trip of a lifetime began with the help of our VBT travel guide “Amy.” She was very helpful, answering all of my questions and concerns, thanks again Amy! Tuscany by the Sea was everything we hoped for and more. The accommodations were amazing at every place we stayed. We never could have chosen these places on our own. The food, the staff, the amenities were all fantastic! Our guides did such a good job taking care of of us, all we had to worry about was getting on the bike! Each day our bike routes offered such beauty and diversity from hillsides to the sea. Our guides could not have been more attentive to each and every travelers needs, just wonderful!
We recommend the pre and post trip. Orvietto was a great introduction to Italy, Rome at the end completed our trip of a lifetime. This trip was an incredible value, above and beyond our expectations. We look forward to planning our next vacation with VBT!

Most wonderful vacation of our lives!

We bicycled through Italy on the Tuscany By The Sea tour about five years ago. Though it’s been awhile, there has not been a day that has gone by that I don’t think of those joyful and happy memories.
I have never felt more alive. My husband and I loved every single moment of the trip. I’m not a writer and I’m not trying to sound cliche, but it was the time of our lives. Where do I start and where do I stop writing! We truly experienced Italy: we ‘discovered’ a thousand year old church off the road, simple as that. We just headed down a dirt road by ourselves and there it was, in the tall grass, an abandoned thousand year old church! We felt the air against our skin, we walked on the shores of the Mediterranean. We walked through vineyards, we laughed like children at an Olive Oil factory. We stayed in places that we can not believe ‘we’ actually stayed in! We meandered on our bikes down country lanes, we huffed and puffed biking up a small hill to an Italian village. We ate at a restaurant that nearly dated back to biblical times! It was the big things that mattered, but it was also a million little experiences that have planted themselves in our hearts!

I would probably have to say that better than any part of the trip were the guides, Marcella and Elania! They had the whole group doubled up laughing nearly the whole time. Funny, informative, and patient, very patient! Another thing my husband and I enjoyed was the option to stay with the group or meet at a point for lunch with the group.

There simply could not be a more perfect experience.

The only thing we are disappointed and regret was that we did not buy the weekend package to extend the trip. We can not wait until our next vacation.

Trip of a lifetime!

The VBT Tuscany by the Sea biking tour far exceeded my expectations! The hotel accommodations, the food and wine, the guides, the cultural experiences and guided tours of castles and walled cities, the beautiful scenery, and the biking were first-class! Being able to spend time in the Italian countryside without the hustle & bustle of tourists and the big city was relaxing for the body yet invigorating for the soul. I loved Italy and there are so many tour choices in Italy I would go back in a heartbeat, but I also can’t wait to explore other countries by bike.

Simply Amazing Time!

Considering how fabulous the food and wine was, and how much I consumed… this was the first vacation I actually lost weight on, and I was thrilled! I had never traveled internationally and was a bit nervous about not knowing Italian, and also nervous about not being able to keep up with the group on my bike. Everything was planned, yet flexible – which made for such a stress free experience! Our tour guides were always available yet they allowed us to have the freedom so we did not feel pressured or rushed. Tuscany was beautiful – the food was outstanding and the scenery from the bikes on our routes was breathtaking. Each time we got back from a riding break our bikes were cleaned up, water bottles refilled and a granola bar ready to snack on for the next leg. I didn’t even have to change a flat tire! I met fabulous people in our group from all over the world and our guides, Elaina and Marcello were knowledgeable, helpful and so much fun! It was an extraordinary vacation and I am planning on Cost Rica for my 50th birthday, right around the corner!

This tour was very well organized and implemented

I led backpack trips and one-day bike rides for my friends for more than 40 years. So, I have first-hand experience on what constitutes a successful outing. Planning, detailed route descriptions, logistics, and implementation were always important ingredients of these outings.

I was greatly impressed by the organization of the bike tour my wife and I took last summer in Italy via VBT. The planning and logistics of the bike tour were outstanding, and the knowledge and assistance of the tour leaders greatly contributed toward the success of the tour.

I loved the mix of activities from cycling, baking cookies, touring the olive oil mill, wine tasting, talking to locals, swimming and the list goes on. Lift your spirits.

Tuscany by the Sea is the perfect way to rejuvenate the spirit after a long New England winter. Bike through fields of wild flowers, past beautiful harbors, and into small Tuscan villages on routes that combine “Tuscan flat”, slow climbing hills, and well-earned downhills. Awaken the taste buds with locally grown fruits, regional wines, and a daily serving or two of gelato. Retire each night to an extremely comfortable bed in lodgings featuring quirky art, grandmother’s antiques, and expansive views. Guides share their love of Italy’s culture, food, and language. Together with the helpful VBT office staff, they make sure that you are well taken care of.

Great time

This was our second trip with VBT. As usual everything was taken care of, so all we had to do is enjoy ourselves. A few of the hills were challenging but the guides were more than happy to let us hop on the van. We got a chance to buy “extra room” seats on Alitalia for about $95 per segment. I am 6’1″ tall so the extra room was great for this 8 to 9 hour flight. The food was very good and we got to try a couple of unusual dishes. Soon, we will start planning our next VBT trip for 2015.

PRICELESS

This was my first VBT trip and my first vacation outside of the US (and traveling alone). As a single, from the moment I got off the plane, the group and trip leaders made everyone feel as though they have known you for years. It was an unbelievable experience to see Tuscany on a bike. It wasn’t too hard, but challenging enough for riders at all levels. As the hours passed by and the scenery continuously changed…. I was in awe!! Although they say a picture is worth a thousand words…images of Tuscany left me speechless.

Experience towns and country side not available on large tours. Cycle along side vinyards, olive groves and fields of sunflowers.

Put this on your Bucket List. Not being a very experienced rider, I was a little anxious about this holiday. No worries. Every day was enjoyable, a little challenge along the way, but what a sense of accomplishment at the end.

Everything about the tour met or exceeded my expectations from leaders, locale, accommodation.

It was a treat to stay in the country side, to ride through the medieval towns, to experience a quiet side of Italy.

One of my absolute favourite holidays.

Tuscany By The Sea - Our first trip to Italy

My husband and I wanted out first trip to Italy to include the coastal areas of Tuscany. We thought an intriguing way to experience the people, the culture and the cuisine in a personal way would be by bicycling through the scenic Tuscan countryside and staying at B & B type lodgings. Friends of ours experienced Tuscany in just this way – through a tour group called VBT. Based on their recommendation, we decided to book our trip with VBT and were most pleased with the adventure that ensued! Our tour group consisted of thirteen very fun and interesting people from all parts of the United States. Our tour guides, Marchello and Matteo, were awesome and definitely added value to the trip! Each morning during our route review, they not only gave us directions, but also provided historical information about the area we were to be riding through that day, along with insights into the culture, tips on the language and various humorous stories from their previous adventures. Every detail of the trip was was thoroughly planned and executed with great care – from our flights to transportation to additional experiences, outside of cycling that added depth to the experience! We also took advantage of the three pre-excursion trip to Orvieto and the three day post-excursion trip to Rome and would highly recommend them both! We look forwward to taking another trip with VBT in the future!

Awesome Tour!!

I am not a biker, so when my friend asked me to join her on a bike tour, I was a little reluctant. I joined the gym to get ready for the trip – the long winter in Vermont this year prevented me from getting on the road as often as I wanted to before the trip. However, this biking on this tour went great and I was able to manage the routes very well.

I knew Tuscany was beautiful, but WOW, it was more beautiful than I could ever have imagined. Pictures don’t do it justice! With rolling hills lined with vineyards and olive tree orchards neatly aligned in row after row, it was just incredible! The food was amazing. The accommodations were terrific, the quality of the bikes was excellent, and the tour guides were amazing – very helpful and fun!!

The biggest challenge was the extended option after the tour of the olive oil mill. It was mostly uphill, so after a substantial amount of time going uphill, I decided to try out the van support (which was one of the reasons I decided to go ahead with this trip even though I wasn’t a biker). It was a great option. It felt great to get as far as I did on this leg of the ride. The views on this day were the best of the week!

Experience Tuscany by bike

As this was my first ever bike trip, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Overall, the trip curated by VBT exceeded any expectations I may have had. We had the pleasure of truly experiencing the people and culture of Tuscany while biking along some of the regions most beautiful roads, lined with vineyards and farms. Of course, our first sight of the sea at Talamone was spectacular!
Our guides, Christian and Luca, while of contrasting personalities, made the trip!! Both were knowledgeable and hospitible and just plain wonderful guys!! Accommodations were mostly comfortable, but all were quite beautiful. Each was a unique experience, and honestly the hosts of all were wonderful! We
ate well, enjoying all the delicacies of the region. Local wines, olive oil, wild boar, truffles, and even Pigeon…yes, it was amazing (that was in Orvieto).
The biking itself was more moderate than easy…coupled with long breaks for lunch and a lot of wine and food, made it more challenging, I thought. But, I do think the trip is geared to enjoy the biking as well as the local culture.
Grazzi Christian and Luca, for instilling in me the best of Italian culture to bring back home with me! Carpe diem!

Tuscany by the Sea

The bike tour met our expectations and more. We loved Italy, the routes, the leaders (Christian and Luca), the lodging, hotel staff, AND our fellow cyclists (a very compatible group of riders, mostly couples). We chose the longer route options and agree with the rating of moderate. The ‘easy’ options were served by shuttle. There was occasional road riding with traffic so someone worried about driving on roads may not be too happy, but even those new to cycling seemed okay with it. It was our first VBT trip and first trip to Italy. A return trip is very likely! Orvieto was well worth it as a pre-trip extension. It gave us a chance to get over jet lag, was a low key introduction to hill-towns of Italy, and offered some great dining. We highly recommend including it in your package. We also did the post-trip to Rome. Perhaps Rome is a ‘must do’ because of the attractions, but it was very crowded, hot, and dirty. The guide we had for the Vatican Museum (Frank) was great and helped make the extra days worthwhile.

Exceptional planning/execution perfectly paced!

Decided to go based on experience nearly 30 years ago. Could not believe the efficiency by which VBT operated the trip and the overall pace and variety of the trip could not have been better. We were able to totally relax since everyday was well planned with plenty of options for our own choices. This is a no-brainer trip for anyone, especially people who need real down-time from their current lives.

Beautiful Scenery, Great Food and Well Organized

The Tuscany by the Sea Trip exceeded our expectations. The scenery was beautiful with a good balance of coastline and farm country views. While most of the trip was flat to slightly rolling hills, we did experience one challenging afternoon of biking into the Tuscan hills but the views were worth it. For those considering a Tuscan Hill town biking trip, this gave them a taste of what it would be like. The trip leaders – Angelo and Ollie were professional, attentive and personable. They made the trip special. We had 19 people on our trip and we travelled well as a group. We signed up for the Orvieto pre trip excursion and had a fun time exploring the town, dining in the many restaurants and learning about the history of the town. Accommodations were charming. We have travelled with other bike tour companies and did a lot of research in choosing VBT for this trip. My wife and I agree that VBT provided the best value for the type of trip we wanted to experience. We look forward to another trip with VBT.

Fabulous vacation

Thirteen interesting, lovely people from all over the US were on this trip. It was an amazingly wonderful experience. I was the only non-serious cyclist among the group. The others rode the all the full routes but I got in the van about a quarter of the way through the trips each day. One day I even stayed at the inn all day. Both places we stayed in Tuscany were lovely; beautiful vistas, great food, helpful, pleasant staff, etc. Nothing could have been improved upon.
The guides were bright, organized, patient, helpful and humorous; in short, perfect for the job. They were as important to the the success of the trip as the incredible countryside.
For me, the vacation was relaxing, for the others maybe exhilarating.
The ONLY thing that wasn’t the best that could have been was the flight routing. Some of us had very long layovers waiting for connecting flights, others departed at unusual times. I will book a trip through VBT again, although it will be a walking tour, but I would want to discuss the plane routes before I accepted them.
The age range was probably 18-70’s. There were couples, two families and a single. As far as I know, everyone enjoyed the trip as much as I did.

When stopped the scenery was beautiful, the guidance maps were very confusing, the routes were not clearly laid out and myself and others became lost everyday. This made the experience very stressful and not enjoyable. I was unable to look at the scenery whiles riding as I was too stressed about getting lost. The accommodations were not fours stars, the beds were very uncomfortable and made it difficult to ride each day cause myself Andy there were so tired.

Beautiful countryside riding.

Trip leaders were outstanding! Oliver and Angelo were funny, kind, knowledgeable and eager to see that each guest’s needs were met. Loved staying in two places for three nights each.
Good riding; some hills that Oliver and Angelo ‘made easy’ for us who chose not to climb; easy-to-follow directions. Loved learning about this interesting area of Italy.

Tuscany By the Sea, Family Adventure.

Great trip. Brought our family together for an active vacation. Since our grandchildren are getting older we thought we had to do something special and expose them to a different culture and perspective on life. I believe this trip did all of that and more.

Our first VBT trip was fantastic!

We had an excellent time every minute of this tour! We had an open mind about the accommodations and ended up loving them because they were so unique. The food was mostly excellent and the service was top notch. The guides, Marcello and Angelo, really made the trip great, and worked very hard behind the scenes to give excellent service. VBT makes sure you experience the culture, and we had different opportunities to do so, such as the olive oil mill tour and Orbitello excursion, which were quite memorable. The bike riding was fantastic, and we LOVED the odometers, which gave us a huge boost of confidence to know where we were and how far we had to go to each step on our direction sheet. We did the post-trip excursion to Rome and were greeted upon our arrival by the VBT rep who helped us with excursions and places to dine. Overall, this was a well-executed,
fantastic active vacation!

One of my favorite trips in my favorite country

When a friend suggested I join her and another friend on this trip, I was a bit skeptical. Not a lover of group tours and having lived in Italy before, I was concerned that the trip would be a bit touristy in a part of Italy I know well. I was completely wrong.

I loved every minute of the trip, from the morning when we met our sweet, charming, young Italian leaders to our last night in Rome. The biking was just right–the first couple of days were easier, allowing us to get used to the bikes and the rhythm of the days, then ramping up for our final two days when it got quite hilly. Maremma is a region of small industry and we stayed at two very charming agriturismi, with La Parrina being an absolute standout. The group was a good mix of active adults (and two young adults) from all over the U.S. and it was fun having breakfasts and dinners together sometimes but not always. The vibe was casual but organized, and the leaders made it easy for each person to bike as much or as little as they wanted and at their own pace.

Eating delicious meals was a big focal point and the places where we stayed made their own wine, cheese and olive oil, grew their own produce and raised their own animals. Needless to say, we ate extremely well and in some very beautiful settings. It turns out that the Italians are respectful of bikers and we didn’t feel intimidated on the roads. The weather was sublime in mid-june and we were able to swim but didn’t feel overheated most days.

I recommend VBT without reservation to anyone looking for a fun, active, well-thought-out trip to Italy. I can’t wait to try another one.

Guides were flawless

While every aspect of this vacation was outstanding, I need to call attention to the two guides. They were able to attend to everyone’s individual needs making the trip a great experience for a diverse group. The rides were filled with amazing views, the food was bountiful as well as fresh. The two hotels were breathtaking. I would recommend this trip to anyone wishing to be immersed in the Tuscan culture while on two wheels.

bucket list trip met all my wife's expectations

My wife has wanted to bicycle in Tuscany for years and this was the first trip on her retirement bucket list. It exceeded her expectations and then some. Our cheerful trip leaders Franco and Timothy went far beyond the call of duty to make sure we had a fantastic time and all our needs were met. The record-setting heat in late July was the only negative.

Great tour guides, great hotels, great food, great scenery. The bikes last year were great; the bikes this year were better. Unfortunately, we had some bad weather. A vacation of a life time

Wow, words can’t describe this fabulous trip, but I will try. Scenic x10 and lovely quiet roads to ride. Tranquility and beauty of the countryside abounds. The great mix of activity both physical and cultural and leisure.
The logistics of the rides enable people a varied levels of ability to participate and enjoy the level of activity they are comfortable with. The guides are fabulous and do what ever they can to accommodate the participants.
Lodging was great and also keeping w/ the quiet countryside of the area.
I say “you won’t be disappointed” with this trip!

A trip of a lifetime

This was our first bike trip and our first trip to Europe. I am now hooked on both VBT vacations and Italy. VBT thinks of every detail and worry free. The Tuscany area was magnificent with the variety of scenery. It was peaceful riding through the country, farmland, hills, vinyards, and the Mediteranian Sea. I am not an avid biker (but I am in shape mostly as a runner) so I thought “easy to moderate” trip would be manageable. The “moderate” hills were challenging, but worth every huff and puff up the never ending hill because the scenery was breathtaking. There were options of doing less miles and not doing the more difficult hills so don’t let that stop you from doing this amazing trip. Our trip leaders Silvia and Oliver were THE BEST by teaching us about the language, culture and having wonderful humor. I could go on and on about this being my best trip ever. You will not be dissappointed. I am already looking for the next VBT trip to take.

Tuscany by the Sea is a trip of a lifetime

Tuscany by the Sea is a vacation of a life time. I was part of a group of 16 that connected from the first day. First the town of Orvieto is lovely. This is the best shopping of the trip. Beautiful pottery art, olive wood creations, linens, and wine to name a few. The pottery can be shipped to avoid the hassle of traveling with it. Antica La Parrina is the next stop and it is also an amazing experience. The morning breakfast is the very best I have ever tasted in my life. The homemade yogurt was always my first stop. The fresh eggs, cheese, meats, and fruit are the perfect start to a day of cycling. The wine is excellent and it is very reasonable to purchase. Customer service is excellent.
The cycling is fantastic in Tuscany. My group added mileage daily to cater to our cycling style. Our tour guides Sylvia and Marcello made the trip very special. From giving us daily tips, adjusting our bike seats, filling our water bottles, stopping at the best Gelato stands, entertaining us with fun cultural facts, to shuttling us to fun-filled evenings—THANK YOU!! You are the best!!
Fattoria Di Magliano is also a remarkable place to stay. The views are fantastic, customer service superb, and the wine is excellent. I purchased two bottles to take home with me.
The farewell dinner and views from the organic farm were the perfect close to
Tuscany.
I did not do the post extension in Rome. For me Rome was great to see but I was ready after the allotted amount of time to leave.
Highly recommend this trip and am already planning my next VBT.

Another Great Trip Not to be Missed

With Angelo and Oliver as our guides, this trip started on an high note. They are both fun, enjoyable, strong bikers, good technicians, easy to talk to, and friendly and funny. The first hotel, or Agriturismo , La Parrina and the wonderful reception manager Maximilliano, were just terrific. A working farm, with a wine shop, produce and cheese store out in the country side of Grosseto is a very nice place to call home for two nights. The little villages we stopped at, Talamone, Orbetello, and of course Magliano, home to the Poggio Beastiale (Hill of the Beast), a 4 K uphill to get to the Fattoria di Magliano. This tour had a bit of everything, rides along the Medeterranian Sea, into the mountains, along flats, always stopping along the way for included lunches, at Olive oil plants, wineries, cheese tasting, and wine tasting. We had 18 riders from all over the US and varying biking abilities, all got along and there were always lively discussions. This is a very good tour and I highly recommend it.

A Wonderful Trip

My wife and I took our first trip with VBT in late October and can’t say enough good things about it! Everything from the organization of the trip to the accommodations to the scenery to the food and of course the personal attention from our great guides Marcello and Franco were all wonderful. Perfection!

I am a 57 year old woman traveling solo, with a first time experience with VBT.
This trip ran seamlessly. Every detail was considered from the lemon wedge in your water bottle every morning (they appeared like magic), to the Picnic lunches. Bikes were wiped nightly and Marchello and Andrea were there to fix any mechanical difficulties that might arise. The bikes were great though, and didn’t offer up much opportunity for them to show off their mechanical skills. The cycling accommodated all levels of riders in our group (beginners to well trained athletes) incredibly well. The accommodations were spot on.
The food was incredible and abundant on this tour.
I would recommend the trip extension to Orvieto- I just did the over night and it wasn’t enough time to appreciate the town. And definitely stay on in Rome longer. Even though I had spent a week in Rome previously, would have been really worth it to stay longer. VBT has tours and tour guides set up in Rome- I took the evening tour by Nicola- she was amazing- Masters in Fine art and Architecture, she was enthusiastic, knowledgeable and welcomed all questions. The tour was well worth the added cost.

The pre trip to Orvieto was definitely one of the highlights. From the moment we met our bike guides, the bike tour was filled with beautiful scenery, interactions with locals, very interesting historical facts, and marvelous (and far too much) Italian cuisine and wines. I don’t own a bike but decided to do this vacation for something different. Our trip leaders, Marcello and Elena were the best! My friend and I were the bike riding rookies in the group and always brought up the rear but Marcello and Elena, as well as the rest of our group, were always encouraging and helpful. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I signed up but I am very glad I did this trip. The shorter/mid rides are good for those that don’t ride much. Great riding with wonderful scenery and meals

We went on the bike and barge tour in Holland last year and one of the riders told us that this was her favorite trip so we thought we would give it a try. The trip was a trip of a life-time. We loved the medieval towns, the wonderful food and all the side events. Some of the hills were a little tough but the people in the group who had the ebikes had no problem so it wasn’t too hard for anyone. The accommodations were first class the the guides were five star. We even learned a little Italian. Couldn’t ask for a better trip.

Great Guides and Food, ALOT of biking, OK Scenery

Our parents treated our family to this trip which was so generous. It’s definitely only for bike lovers, as there’s not much time for much else. Everyday is biking all day, a little downtime before dinner at the remote hotels, and then do it all over again. The guides and group were nice, the hotels were beautiful, and everything was planned out for you, so we had a great time. It’s not AS coastal as I would have liked, meaning we saw the ocean just a few times for brief periods of swimming before back on the bikes. The biking wasn’t too challenging, there was just alot of it. For some people (like my parents), this is the perfect vaca because they just want to ride ride ride. If you’re looking for some biking and exercise mixed with time to explore and relax, this isn’t your trip.

Bella Tuscany!

I met my new love in Tuscany. On the urging of our guides and fellow riders, I tried an E-bike. It was love at first hill. This turned what would have been challenging into an easy ride, where I could enjoy the beautiful scenery, stop for pictures, and still beat my husband to the top. And he didn’t have to listen to me huff and puff, and complain about the climb.

Our guides, as in all VBT tours, made the trip for us. Elena and Marcello openly shared the love they have for their country, its culture, people, and history. Their patience and attention to detail made traveling effortless and fun.
The cultural activities gave us a true taste of Tuscany. Our destinations, from beaches to hilltop castles, showed us a less typical view of the region. There were still plenty of Tuscan sun illuminated hillsides, full of vineyards, olive groves, and farm houses. The local food and wines were plentiful and delicious.

This was our 10th trip with VBT. There’s a reason we keep coming back. We thought we were limited to the Easy rated tours, but the introduction of the E-bike will keep us riding with them for years to come.

Our guides were excellent and the routes for our daily rides were breathtaking. We loved the accommodations at all hotels; the food was excellent, and the e-Bike was simply amazing. Thanks to everyone involved who made this such a memorable experience.

Very well planned, great excursions and leaders

My second trip with VBT. Thought VBT could not top last year’s trip to Lake Constance, but they did. This trip had lots of riding and also other activities (Giglio Island, three opportunities to swim in the Mediterranean, visit to olive oil fattoria, wine and olive oil tastings, and terrific food. It was so nice to spend three nights in each hotel. Long rides through gorgeous farmland and medieval villages (each with their own amazing gelatto shop). Both hotels had beautiful pools, so swimming was definitely a part of this trip. The guides, Angelo and Andrea were super. They had great chemistry, were thoroughly professional, well organized and very funny. Their introductions to coffee culture in Italy, and speaking Italian without words had us rolling on the floor.

The trip ends with a three day extension in Rome. VBT set up four different walking tours that you were free to sign up for or not. I took three of the tours, one each day, and the guides were of the highest caliber. Cheeky, deeply knowledgeable, and completely familiar with their territory, I felt I got a great overview of so much of Rome, and still had time to wander the shops and grocery stores.

This trip was challenging, but well paced, with a variety of options and experiences. What a way to get to know the Marenna!

Something for everyone

First time we did a VBT trip and stayed in only two venues instead of three. Great decision, VBT! The biking choices were excellent, the places we stayed had wonderful views, great food, terrific staffs, excellent pools. Perfect blend of biking, views, time at the beach, great food, excellent tour leaders. Does not get better than this.

Marvelous and memorable Tuscany

It was a wonderful trip, from start to reluctant finish. Guides, rides and countrysides all sublime. Tuscan hills, food and people all enchanting. Nothing we could suggest to add to this trip. Take me back!

Fantastic Landscape & Biking

The numerous bike path through the beautiful and stunning landscape make this trip extra special and along with the fact that you feel like you are both in Italy and Austria at the same time. Loved Merano especially biking along the lake. Would have liked to have had the farewell dinner at the Merano hotel which is stunning and after a full day of biking would be very relaxing, otherwise, all was wonderful!

Memories of a lifetime!

We have just returned from the Tuscany by the Sea tour, and I couldn’t wait o write a review. Of course, the sights food and biking were magical. But, I want to focus on our tour leaders and the people we met along the way. Franco and Luca are the kindest, caring and most professional tour leaders. Their expertise and “behind the scenes” preparation were enhanced by their humor and desire to help us with any detail or request. The places we stayed were fabulous! But, again, the experiences like the wine tasting, biscotti baking and olive oil tasting gave me a sense of these generous and genuine people. VBT does it right! I already miss my new best friends!!!!

Biking trip was very good. Trip leaders very knowledgeable and helpful.
Rome extension a disappointing contrast to the beauty of Tuscany.

Wonderful Tour

Wonderful tour with great trip leaders. Especially enjoyed Orvieto, the cookie cooking class, hiking near Campese Beach, touring Rossa Pisana and Capalbio, and the food, wine, and service at Fattoria Di Magliano. The only constructive criticism would be that the dinners at Antica Fattoria La Parrina were not as wonderful as everywhere else on the trip, sometimes one felt rushed (i.e. 30-minute tour of the shop at La Parrina), and the Orbetello lagoon trip wasn’t as described in the itinerary. Highly encourage the two day pre-trip extension to Orvieto and trying some wild boar and/or truffle dishes.

Hot but Fun

I enjoyed the lodging that we stayed in and the roads that we biked. Lucas and Franco were entertaining and very helpful tour guides. The only thing I would have done different is scheduled this tour in May or September, it was very hot.

Excellent Solo Travel Experience

This was my first trip with VBT but it definitely won’t be my last! I was on my own and it was a very comfortable way to travel as a solo. All the arrangements were perfect which made it easy to relax and enjoy the trip. The two agriturismi in Tuscany were beautiful, with amazing food and wine, and both had lovely pools which we all enjoyed after a day of riding. The routes were challenging for me but manageable, through gorgeous countryside on roads with little traffic. I especially enjoyed the beach picnic and swim at Talamone, the olive oil mill visit, the non-biking day on Giglio Island, and the farewell dinner at a local estate. We had an exceptionally fun and cohesive group, and our guides Sylvia and Luigi really made the trip with their professionalism, thoughtfulness, and great sense of humor. It will be tough to decide which VBT trip to do next!

Tuscany By the Sea Rocks!

This was my first VBT bicycling tour and it was fabulous. I loved our small group of 10 interesting travelers, enthusiastic tour leaders, wonderful boutique hotels, great food, and so many additional cultural opportunities including wine tours with tasting, olive oil factory tour, cooking lesson, Giglio Island visit with clifftop hike, any many hilltop medieval walled villages to explore; not to mention the many excellent gelato stops. The bicycling was marvelous and I would recommend an e-bike to other travelers as it allowed me to ride further and with less discomfort than I would have otherwise experienced. I will definitely book another VBT tour in the near future.

Great tour guides

My husband and I absolutely loved the Tuscany by the Sea bike tour. Marchello and Lucca could not have been more helpful or fun. We loved the actual biking and the scenery but we also enjoyed the side trips. The wonderful food and wine was an additional enjoyment. I would certainly recommend to all.

Tuscany by the Sea

Looked forward to this trip for months and it was even better than anticipated! The tour was well organized. Our tour guides were wonderful, savvy and attentive. We biked through small friendly villages and the scenery in the Tuscan hills and along the sea were so beautiful. The lodging couldn’t have been more comfortable and the food was so delicious and fresh.

Great Experience!

Our first VBT vacation and we were so impressed! Tour leaders guided us thru every step. Felt confident as we navigated the gorgeous Tuscany landscape. In addition to the amazing scenery, we loved the food, the farm to table settings, personal attention; authentic Italy at its best!

Best bike ride ever!

We’d heard from dear friends that you could throw a dart at a board with all the VBT biking vacations and end up with a 5 star experience. They were correct! Tuscany By The Sea was breathtakingly beautiful and we felt like we were peddling through a postcard each day. The tour guides were knowledgeable, professional, helpful and hilarious. We learned a bit each morning about the route we’d be taking, the sights we’d see, and
something interesting about customs in the region and country. The e-bikes made it so that there was no need to be crabby after riding 30 Miles each day! The GPS navigation permitted us to stop at places that we found interesting without losing our way. We toured a winery, an olive oil factory and made biscotti. It’s the perfect vacation for people who love to see the world on a bike. It’s an absolutely blast!

tuscany by the sea

The hotel rooms were small and bare bones. Quite different from my prior VBT experiences. Also, I traveled in early Nov–while we had great weather, I would recommend taking this trip in early Oct or late Sept. to take advantage of the water and to be able to see more flora and fauna.

Wonderful route, guides and accommodations

This was my first VBT trip. Tuscany was beautiful and the guides were fantastic. Beautiful scenery and mostly quiet country roads with no traffic. Accommodations were perfect; but don’t bring a big suitcase! VBT thinks of everything including transfers to and from the airport with people to meet you. A perfect vacation! For the most part, the food was not what I expected in Italy; pretty mediocre, but we were almost having too much fun to notice. Go!!!!

Love Tuscany!

Tuscany never disappoints-from the Duomo which welcomes you to the 11th century village, to the rolling vineyards, the beautiful Giglio Island, and the ancient ruins of Rome this trip has it all. Fantastic accommodations, mouthwatering food, beautiful countryside. VBT does a great job guiding you through this amazing region.

So many superlatives!

Highly recommended! An absolutely wonderful, relaxing vacation! We have taken many VBT trips and rank this up there as one of our best! Activities (aside from biking) were varied everyday, so there was always something new to look forward to. The agriturismo hotels were in beautiful settings and allowed for enjoyable relaxation in the evenings. We enjoyed our afternoon at the Tyrrhenian Sea and excursion to Giglio Island.
This was our first trip using e-bikes. We are reasonably fit, but definitely not athletes. The e-bike assist allowed us to complete even the most hilly rides that I would have otherwise been too intimidated to try. They also allowed us to experience all the views and complete the rides in plenty of time for relaxation by the pool. I still felt like I got plenty of exercise, since I could control the “assist” that the bike gave me. But instead of being exhausted in the evenings, we had more energy to enjoy the wonderful dinners and camaraderie of new-found friends. Our guides, Luca and Andrea, were fun and kept us laughing during our morning route notes and all throughout the trip. Orvieto was a beautiful and quaint Italian walled town with plenty of activities and areas to wander about during our pre-trip. We would go back there in a heartbeat.

Tuscany by the Sea

Great way to see a small area of Tuscany! The guides, Marcello and Angelo were spectacular! Food and wine were awesome! Don’t be embarrassed to try an e-bike, they are the way to go!! Only recommendation: VBT main office, you need to be more understanding and accommodating, from the beginning, before we show up in Tuscany, when you are presented with a dilemma that I suspect is very rare. Thank you for finally seeing a way to resolve our issue.

Favoloso!

On June 15th, my friends and I went to Italy for our wonderful “Tuscany By The Sea” bike tour. Our guides Franco and Marcello were great! I really appreciated all the support they gave us on the road and off. We stayed in beautiful agritourism hotels, where we learned about: Olives, vineyards, wine and ate authentic Italian meals. This was the best way to see and learn about the Tuscan area. We also spent an extra 3 days in Rome at a beautiful hotel (Hotel River Palace) close to all of the ruins. Thank you VBT for helping us arrange this. My only complaint would be that it was hot! I would recommend that bikers take this trip earlier in the spring.

Insufficient food and water

While I had a great time, I experienced numerous issues with the trip. First, unlike all prior trips, there was only 1 snack stop (in the morning, shortly after breakfast). This was critically inadequate because this moderate trip was must more difficult than my other easy trips as the course was hilly and long, and the temperature was very hot, requiring more food and water than the other trips. There also should’ve been water and food when we arrived back at the end of the day. One day i had lunch at 11:30, rode 43 tough miles in the hot sun, and didn’t eat until 9:00 p.m.
Another big issue we had was we were dropped off at a little village for lunch, but all the restaurants said they were booked. The guides should have made sure there was availability or help us get availability. I think we were hometowned and would have been fine if they accompanied us (and there were only a few couples so it could have easily been done).

This was my 1st trip with VBT. They really know how to put together a great tour. The leaders Marco & Andrea were terrific and made the trip extra special. The scenery was beautiful. Great Trip Tom and Barb

VBT was exceptional from start to finish. Tuscany was breathtaking, the food fabulous, the biking a bit challenging but what made our trip so special was our group. By the end of the week, I felt that we had become one, big, happy family. But what made our week so very, very special were our guides, Franco and Marcello. They could not have been more compassionate, generous, kind, professional, knowledgeable, and fun. They went above and beyond. Big hugs and thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Tuscany by the sea was definitely for me!

From the start to the end VBT did their best to ensure we had an exceptional experience. The sites, trip leaders (Oliver & Luca) with their pre and post trip knowledge transfer about the culture and history, the hosts at the various Agriturismo accomodations, the lunch and dinner experiences and all of our co-travelers made this such a memorable “out of the box” vacation along with the e bikes too! We are really looking forward to our next VBT experience,

Fun challenging fun and really fun

First time VBT first time in Italy. Blown away by the beautiful country side we viewed on each days ride. Accomadations were wonderful and allowed all the tour participants to easily bond each evening. We also extended in Rome and we’re extremely pleased with our VBT hotel and local support. However as good a trip as it was , it was enhanced by our guides Oli morretti and Luca Conte . They made every second appear like it was also new to them , always had us laughing and kept us safe and informed. They were family by the end of the tour. We’ve even invited them to visit.

Blazing saddles and more

Great fun biking through the rolling hills of Tuscany with plenty of route options for those who wanted a little more or less. Enjoyed the variety in between cycling of hiking, swimming and visiting medieval castles and learning some local history along the way. Food was pleasing and company was delightful.
Our guides, Marcello and Lucas also provided some exceptional comedic performances prior to each ride…2 thumbs up for this dynamic duo!

Easily the best of our 4 wonderful VBT trips!

Since 2014, with VBT we’ve taken in the wonders of Southern France, California Wine Country, and the Quebec Eastern Townships. But as magnificent as those bike tours were, Tuscany By the Sea claims top honors. Wonderful rapport among all the bikers, Marcello and Oliver as the perfect guides, stunning countryside to cycle through, educational and fun side trips to a winery and an olive oil operation, pre-extension in Orvieto an absolute must, our final half-day in Rome at the end of the trip so we could briefly experience the highlights we wanted to revisit, superb lodgings and meals, eBikes our salvation. We’ve only been back a few weeks and are alreday planning another VBT tour in Italy. Bravo, VBT!

Lone traveler

As a single traveler in a foreign country, I had concerns about travel connections, getting around without knowing the language, and safety. I choose Tuscany by the Sea with VBT because it promised to provide all connections, bilingual guides and deep knowledge of the area.

The result was a trip that FAR exceeded my expectations. Not only were all connections made but the person who met me at the airport and all of the drivers were sooooo sweet and personable. I felt safe and in excellent hands.

Our trip to Tuscany happened to coincide with Europe’s record breaking heat week. The guides checked on us often as we were biking and walking and helping us get through the heat. The rooms in the Inns were all air conditioned, clean, and quiet to provide a reprieve from the heat.

The guides, Elena and Christian, were far more than “guides”. They certainly were funny and entertaining as they did the morning Italian language lesson with Elena teaching how to move our mouths (“you MUST-a open yours mouths-a big-a like this-a”) and Christian showing us how to talk with our hands! So funny. They talked with us at our meals- it was great to get to know them as friends and not just guides.

The trip has a perfect balance of activity and down-time. It was very clear that VBT listens to feedback and implements all of the hints. There were no glitches or irritations. All activities were seamless and delightful- perfect for a vacation.

I am in my sixties and was quite concerned about being able to ride 40+ miles a day so I opted for the e-bike. What a great decision that was! The “turbo” gear on the e- bike made it easy to get to the top of some steep hills. Yes, my legs were sore at the end of the day but at least I was able to complete the rides. I think the e-bike can open the “active travel” to a wider group of people.

Things I would have done different had I known better:
1. pack much less and only travel with a carry on.
2. bring my own electrolytes
3. would have done this many time before. VBT has this active vacation thing figured out 🙂

Great Ride-Great Villages-Great Roads!

This is our second VBT trip, and as advertised (word of mouth) was a balance of great rides (very nice roads, very safe, and the local motorist were very good to us), great vistas and interesting riding scenery (Julie liked that everything looked like wine country Napa, but yet everything by the Mediterranean Sea). Rolling hills and vineyard laden descents kept the rides really fun, and lunch stops at the Mediterranean Sea, or at hilltop castle/towns with views of the Med were nothing less than spectacular. Our group leaders (Father and Son) Marchello and Ollie are fabulous and really made the tour fun and interesting. It also helped that our WHOLE group was focused on fun and remained together for lunches and dinners during the free time on the ride, as well as independent time in Rome. All of our transfers were on time and baggage handled safely, and our accommodations were comfortable, and well appointed. Did I mention Wine and Food? Every where we ate, the food was amazing- and the wine were all of great! Looking forward to our next VBT ride!
