ITALIAN LAKES WALKING TOUR

OVERALL WELL DONE.THE WALKS WERE MODERATE AND GREAT BECAUSE EACH WITH DIFFERENT VIEWS AND TERRAIN ..THE ITINERARY DISTANCE WISE BETWEEN STOPS WAS GOOD AS THERE WAS NOT A LOT OF VAN TRAVEL AND DOWN TIME.EACH SPOT/LAKE HAD SOMETHING NEW TO OFFER AND ALL WERE SPECTACULAR.MY WIFE HAS A PHOTO BOOK THAT CAPTURES THE TOUR AND SHE WOULD BE GLAD TO SHARE IT WITH YOU.

Breathtaking Views

The logistics of this trip were very well executed and the 2 trip leaders were thorough, professional & entertaining. All I had to do was get myself to & from the airport. Mother Nature was good to us and provided good weather for this Spring trip, including lush flowers and vegetation. Travelling from place to place by boat was such a fun experience. Small towns were interesting and beautiful – the scenery was breathtakingly beautiful. Food was excellent. Hotel rooms were sparkling clean with luxurious linens. Walking routes offered a lot of variety & daily choices for shorter/longer options. One of the best trips I’ve ever experienced……and I’ve travelled a lot.

This was a wonderful tour in all respects!

The selection of the Lakes we visited, hikes we took, accommodations, food, and our two guides couldn’t have been better. It was really a special trip made even better by the perfect weather and wonderful folks in our group. We were constantly busy but still had enough time to do a little shopping and exploring on our own. It will be hard to match this one in the future!

Wonderful Tour of the Lakes

This is the first year of the Walking the Italian Lakes tour but there was no question it had the wonderful care and attention to detail that is typical of VBT tours. The places we went were absolutely breathtaking in their beauty. The tour guides were funny and delightful to be with. I will say this is a walking tour, not a tour with walking. Some of the guests were dismayed at how much real walking there was. While none of the walks were strenuous, hiking shoes were very handy to have. It was a nice touch to have some of the transfers by boat. Highly recommended.

Wonderful people, accomodations, and scenery

We had a fantastic time on our hiking trip through the Italian Lakes of Como, Maggiore and Orta. Everything went perfectly including the weather for the time we were there. Our leaders were very helpful, knowledgeable and caring to all of our fellow travelers.

Excellent guides, lovely area but trip did not meet standards established by VBT.

I have traveled taken 5 bike trips with VBT and found them very pleasant. For the most part, with the exception of how legitimate issues/complaints were handled on the Dolomite trip, an excellent standard was set by the company.
Walking Italian lakes hotels were nice but dinners/food were fewer and at best mediocre.
VBT promised van support in brochures and by representatives when queried however, van support was not available.
It is understood that some walking trails are not accessible by vehicles however…none were provided.
The guides, Bea and Teo were phenomenal and worked diligently to overcome the van shortcomings.
No portage was supplied in any of the hotels when it was during all bike trips I have taken.

Response from: Product Team

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We are disappointed to hear that the food and van support did not meet your expectations. We are taking action to improve the quality of meals on our Italian Lakes Walking tour to exceed the high standard we set for ourselves world-wide. We also appreciate your feedback regarding the lack of porterage for your luggage. Luggage should have been delivered to your room and we are working with our hotels to make sure that happens in the future. As you noted, many of our walking paths are not always accessible by vehicles and our leaders are able to provide alternative options when vehicle support is unavailable. We hope that you will give us the opportunity to serve you again.

The Italian Lakes

The Italian Lakes trip is a very good value with excellent guides but the rating was incorrect. Even though it was labeled easy, it was far from a stroll and there was no promised van support for the reluctant walker.

Italian Lakes

This was a spectacular walking-hiking trip with just the right amount of challenge. The views of mountains, lakes and general sights were picture-perfect and the two local guides took great care of us and were very well informed on everything we should know about the architecture, local history and food. We loved our second walking-hiking trip with VBT>

Stunning beauty, great tour leaders, fun walks and activities

This tour was the first time my husband and I had ever traveled abroad or been with a tour group, and we had the time of our lives. Nothing compares with the beauty of this region, and the local people were so friendly. Every day was pure fun and enjoyment. The walks were just right – not too long or strenuous. The activities were great, every one of them. Also, the tour had just the right balance of time spent as a group and time on your own. Best of all, our tour leaders, Teo and Marcello, did an outstanding job and were completely dedicated to ensuring that we had a wonderful experience. They were knowledgeable and fun and obviously love what they do. If you are thinking about going to Italy, this is the trip to take.

Not up to VBT quality

VBT has once again discovered a beautiful place to be explored, but unfortunately, the walking experiences were interrupted with long breaks that seemed pointless. The guides were very knowledgable, professional and accommodating. I would suggest that customers consider other companies for this trip.

Response from: Product team

Thank you for your feedback. This tour is rated as “Easy” which means that our Trip Leaders tend to stop and give breaks based on the general level of abilities of the group as a whole. However, we do offer a variety of trail options during each day and guests are encouraged to use the route directions and maps that VBT provides in order to walk at a pace and distance of their choosing.

Great experience in a lovely area.

Our walking holiday was everything we had hoped it would be and more. The Italian Lakes itinerary was excellent and there were some lovely excursions in addition to the walking. We used the Day Pass advice for exploring Lake Como by boat and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We especially enjoyed Stresa and the visit to Isola Bella followed later by dinner on Isola die Pescatori. Lunch at Rosetta’s was delightful and the sort of experience that makes VBT holidays so enjoyable. All the recommendations for lunch or dinner were great and we had super meals wherever we went especially lunch at Vapore inTorno.

Beautiful locations, great walks, fabulous food and hotels

This was my fifth VBT walking tour and they keep getting better. The locations were terrific with good and varied walks. The guides as usual with VBT were personable, knowledgeable and fun. The hotels were even better than usual as was the food at provided meals and events. The Agricola meal provided at a dairy farm was a once in a lifetime experience both in terms of setting and the wonderful food. And traveling on the lakes in a variety of boats was a great part of the trip – two dinners were reached by boat and several attractions and walking venues were as well. The weather was generally perfect but even when it wasn’t, we had fun. I took the Como pretrip which I would recommend. The Como hotel is charming and well located, day trips from Como to Milan, Switzerland or on the lake are easy and inexpensive and Como itself has much to offer. I didn’t take the Milan post trip although somewhat wish I had. You do have the better part of a day and a night there, the hotel is also well located and very good, and an orientation tour is provided. The hotels on VBT tours are usually very good, except sometime for the last night. All were excellent this time. I also thought the provided meals were a cut above those on other trips, which are always pretty good. In summary, this was another great experience. I’ve already signed up for my 6th trip.

This was my first VBT experience and I couldn't have been more pleased with the itinerary and both guides.

The scenery, the pace of the days activities, the expertise and great chemistry between our guides made this trip a perfect experience to share with my teen-aged grand daughter on her first European trip.

exceeded our high expectations in natural beauty, man made gardens, trip guides knowledge and leadership, and total trip enjoyment

the Lake Como region is re splendid in natural beauty, great gardens, demanding but rewarding hikes we otherwise would have never found on our own, restaurants of excellent fares that you never see in the United States and two guides who knew the history of the region and kept the rhythm and pace of the day in check with a quick wit and humor.

An extraordinary experience

The northern lakes are remarkably beautiful, and this tour allows visitors to enjoy them in an extraordinary way. The walking itineraries are fascinating, and transportation by ferry from place to place is the perfect complement. The accommodations could not have been better, and even the weather cooperated, with occasional showers providing a pleasant balance to mostly sunny days.

Cultural, Visual and Physical Activity in Balance

This trip was a wonderful mix of beautiful sparkling mountain lake scenery with just the right amount of exercise and the added delight of knowledgeable guides who gave us lots of cultural, botanical and lively personal histories of the region. The hotels and restaurants were wonderful with some very special lunches. Transportation was reliable and comfortable. The leaders were exceptional; personable and fun. I loved this trip!

The landscapes are beautiful!

The group was friendly & fun! The leaders were knowledgable & enjoyable. The tour provides many options & are very accomodating to the diff. needs of individuals. I love scenic, cultural, & historic Italy! Enjoyed the hikes & the boat taxis on the lakes. Each lake area provided a diff. experience from more modern to the smaller Lake Orta & the more medieval village of San Guilio. The accomodations were unique & excellent.

Excellent Guides

Matteo and Marcello really made the Walking the Italian Lakes trip an enjoyable experience. Between them, they were able to cover the relevant cultural and historical points raised by us tourists. The pace of the walking seemed to be agreeable to all. They even handled a couple of minor medical situations with aplomb.

Fabulous experience

This is the second trip we’ve taken with VBT and surpassed all my expectations. My son and his wife were with us and the trip was a celebration of his important birthday. The walking experience was varied and totally enjoyable; the hotels were lovely; and the planned meals excellent. As a bonus, our group was very small and the two guides were exceptional. With the exception of the one day we had torrential rain, the trip was perfect.

The Good and the Bad

The other people on the trip were wonderful and very welcoming. I enjoyed the hiking and of course the gardens. I did not feel the guides really connected with the group. There was way too much free time and too many meals on our own. The hotels were good except for the one prior to Milan. That room was more like an inexpensive motel.

Walking The Italian Lakes

upon arrival at Milan airport I was greeted and picked up by a wonderful driver. Driven to my 1 st destination. After 3 days Vale and Bea arrived to start our tour. Vale looked like she just rolled out of bed. Hair not combed, shabby clothing. Bea was very professional. Our walks continued. However, I do believe that one tour guide should lead and one should follow. As we had a few stragglers. Throughout the tour Vale and Bea were very busy talking to one another, Vale seemed very agitated each time I inquired about the slow person where she was. I also was not happy with leaving at 7:15a.m. on our last day to accommodate the tour guides schedule. As we arrived in Milan early, check-in for me was close to 3:00p.m. I had gone on this trip to see if this is what I would like to reward my company with. I have decided not too. Too disappointed with the tour guides. Area was beautiful, walks (few) were wonderful and Bea’s explanation at each site was amazing. The #1 and #2 dinners were unpleasant. I know as a sales manager I would not appreciate the inconsideration your staff had shown paying guest of VBT. VBT transportation was extremely dependable and extremely professional.

Great Glimpses and Activities in the Italian Lakes

This was a great introduction to a region of Italy that I had not previously experienced. This introduced three quite different lakes [Como, Maggiore, Orta] and somewhat different settings and features. The walking/hiking options were ample, giving more to those who wanted these, and somewhat less for those who wanted less. After our many previous VBT cycling options, this was a slower way to experience the countryside and allowed us to have greater perspective on the region.

Absolutely Perfect

Our tour guides were top notch! We learned so much about the beautiful lakes region. The walks were interesting and varied. The meals were over the top. The tour was the perfect mixture of exercise, culture, group experiences and above all the opportunity to learn about the fascinating history of northern Italy.

Terrific hiking and great guides

Our group of 20 was fortunate to have Bea and Fabio, the fabulous duo, as our guides. Their teamwork, flexibility, cleverness, humor, and knowledge of the area and its customs provided us with the best hike imaginable. Of course, the perfect weather added to this, as did the beauty of the Italian Lakes and of Italians themselves. VBT, congratulations!

Fabulous Experience!

This was our fifth VBT walking trip and, as with the previous trips, the experience was thoughtfully planned and the trip was wonderful. The tour leaders were knowledgable about the areas and the sites we visited and offered great information that provided context to what we were seeing. They really made the places and history come alive. The leaders were also great fun to be with and made everyone in the group feel comfortable and welcomed.

Interesting, but not my cup of tea

Lakes and surrounding mountains were beautiful, but most of the hiking was done in towns, often with cobblestone streets which took a toll on legs snd feet. Had wanted more country hiking. The villas that we visited were chosen well, with both historical, personal, snd architectural interest. It rained a good amount so that affected some the hiking and sight seeing activities

A walking trip with diversity.

I love walking tours, but I am slow and a bit old. i was nervous about taking this trip, but it was wonderful. The combination of hiking, boat trips, sight seeing and food was perfect. Our guides, Bea and Claudia were knowledgeable, conscientious and good humored. They set the pace in our hikes which is so important. Having options and the use of poles was a great help.

Wonderful accommodations and beautiful lake views

The first day out of Como seemed very long..lots of walking that day and the group didn’t get to the hotel until late afternoon. We took the following morning to ourselves and met the group later in Vezio. On Thursday the paved road hike from Monte Mottarone was not enjoyable..downhill all the way. At the second leg of this hike, we shuttled to Coiromonte to join the group for a delectable farmer’s lunch. Overall, the trip was relaxing, the views were incredible, and the leaders were warm, engaging and knowledgable.

Italian Lakes Are Beautiful (in the Sunshine)

We were lucky to have mostly very good weather, and were able to stay with the planned itinerary with one exception. The lakes and towns are beautiful, and the hikes were very enjoyable. The other activities, including gardens and castles, rounded out the days and gave us some time to amble rather than meet walking deadlines to get somewhere along the walk. The hotels were very comfortable, with La Palma in Stresa the best of them all.

Of the two tour leaders, Bea was terrific and Claudia was disappointing. Claudia acted a bit immature and made some comments that were demeaning to the group/. Her English left a lot to be desired, and some of us only understood her with great difficulty.

Response from: Customer Service

Thanks for your 5 star review and feedback regarding our leaders. Our leader manager will work with Claudia to improve her service to our guests.

Fabulous trip. Would do it again.

This was our first walking vacation with VBT (we’ve done two biking trips with them), and we (my husband and I) highly recommend it. Loved each day’s itineraries, our guides (especially Beatrice, who was a local and very knowledgeable about the area and helpful), our hotels, and meals. The Italian lakes we visited (Como, Maggiore, and Orta) were gorgeous and the walking was generally easy (or easy if you are in decent shape/are used to going for long walks). I usually plan our trips, down to the last detail, and it was great having someone else (VBT) take care of everything, from transferring you and your luggage from/to the airport and between the lakes to buying tickets for attractions to finding the perfect restaurant or gelato place. I don’t think I could have done a better job (and I pride myself on my travel agent skills). My one regret? That the trip wasn’t longer.

Fabulous scenery, food and fun!

Great adventure. The trip was well planned so that moving from place to place was easy. Providing the walking poles was helpful even if one is an experienced hiker. A surprise was seeing so many different gardens. Loved the flowers! The food was excellent and plentiful. Highly recommend this trip!!

Exceptional Value Trip!

We had a great experience on the Italian Lakes Walking tour! The guides were excellent and the itinerary was well thought out. We would suggest to all as for the price, the value of the hotels, included meals, wonderful and knowledgeable guides and convenience of transports all made for a wonderful experience. Our only input would be know your walking limitations as some of the older and less fit walkers struggled and held the rest of the group up some. Also rooms seemed to be selected by alphabetic order so would inquire at check in as to view rooms. Our name seemed to disadvantage us some. Overall wonderful though.

Review of Walk9ng the Italian Lakes

This was my first time on a VBT walking tour. I was concerned as this was my first time solo. I needn’t have been. The group was very friendly and shared an interest in walking, beautiful surroundings and good food and wine. My husband and I had traveled extensively in Europe so I knew what to expect. What I didn’t anticipate, however was that this was a remarkable way to gain local insight and see the attractions in an informed way. This was also due to the fact that we had two exceptional guides Beatrice and Giovanni. Beatrice had a wealth of knowledge and passion for the area that she graciously shared with us. Giovanni possessed a
wealth of information on the flora and fauna of the area which enhanced our long treks through the countryside. He discreetly assessed the tour members capabilities and personal challenges and was there when encouragement or reassurance was needed.
Throughout the tour they both were personable and engaging and sincerely
appeared to be enjoying themselves.
The tour itself was well organized and
kept to a busy schedule allowing us to partake of fantastic sights, great food and local culture. Many people used walking poles which allowed them to complete the more challenging hikes which would have otherwise
been missed.
Several members of the tour have been on VBT trips previously and intend going again.
This is a testament to VBT. I also plan to take another VBT tour in the near future.
