Around the IJsselmeer: Bike & Sail North Holland

You’ll revisit Holland’s Golden Age in important Renaissance mercantile centers like Hoorn, Enkhuizen, and Stavoren. Witness Dutch industriousness first-hand in working windmills, the cheese-making town of Edam, a clog shop, high-tech greenhouses, and the UNESCO-listed Wouda Steam Pumping Station, an engineering marvel that prevents the IJsselmeer’s fertile polder lands from being submerged by the sea. The miracle that is Holland awaits you on this diverse and scenic idyll.

Whether the ship sails or transfers by motor will depend on sea and wind conditions and timing. Our VBT support shuttle is available every day at designated points for those who need assistance. Please note that there are stairs aboard ship, and cabins are not wheelchair-accessible.

Itinerary & Map
Or, Expand All Days
DAY 1: Depart from home / Fly overnight to Amsterdam

Depart from home for Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The particulars of your arrival overseas are detailed with your flight itinerary.

DAY 2: Arrive in Amsterdam and transfer to Den Haag

Upon arrival at the Amsterdam airport, claim your luggage and clear customs. If your luggage is lost, fill in a PIR form before leaving the customs area; VBT representatives are not allowed into the customs area. Please make certain your VBT luggage tags are affixed to your bag so your VBT representative can identify you. After exiting customs, enter the arrival hall and look for your VBT representative, who will be holding a VBT sign and who will make arrangements for your transfer via taxi or minibus to your hotel in Den Haag (transfer time is approximately 35 minutes, depending on traffic).

Transfers are provided by Schiphol Taxi Service, who will be looking for you and carrying a VBT sign. You may be approached by other companies offering a transfer. Please use only Schiphol Taxi Service (STS telephone: +31 654 354 601 or +31 681 299 101). Transfers provided by any other company will be at your own expense.

If you cannot find the VBT representative, or have been delayed in customs because of lost luggage or another reason, please go to the airport’s Red & White Meeting Point in the main arrival hall and wait there. You can also go to one of the yellow information desks in the main hall and ask if they will telephone Schiphol Taxi Service (using the number above) on your behalf.

Hotel check-in time is 3:00 p.m., but the staff will do their best to get you to your room as soon as possible. After checking in, you have the rest of the day to relax or to begin your exploration of the city.

Later, try one of the city’s wonderful restaurants for dinner on your own.

Hotel: Mercure Den Haag Central Hotel
Alternate Hotel: Hotel Corona

DAY 3: Embark ship in Amsterdam / Bicycle Vacation begins

VBT Bicycle Vacation only guests: You are responsible for making your own way to the ship in Amsterdam, arriving between 1:00 p.m. and 1:20 p.m. Please note that you cannot embark before this time, as the ship is being prepared for your arrival. If you are running late, you must contact the ship, as the ship will depart Amsterdam for Monnickendam at 1:30 p.m. The ship’s telephone number is ++31 6 547 713 22. It will be moored at Sumatrakade between numbers 1 and 300. Please refer to your VBT handbook (received after booking) for more information. Please enjoy lunch on your own before arrival.

VBT Air Package and Pre-Trip Extension guests: After breakfast, make sure your luggage is packed and ready to be transported to the ship. At 12:15 p.m., meet a VBT representative in the hotel lobby for departure to Amsterdam (approx. 1 hour 10 minutes from Den Haag). Please enjoy lunch on your own before departure. Upon arrival, meet your VBT Trip Leaders and embark ship.

Once on board, you’ll be welcomed by the ship’s crew and shown to your cabin before the ship sails for Monnickendam (under motor, sailing time approx. 2½ hours). After time to settle in, join a safety briefing and bike fitting. Once docked in Monnickendam, enjoy a warm-up ride through the rural nature reserve of Waterland with its many villages, canals and rivers. A highlight along the way is the village of Broek, a picturesque spot in the center of Waterland that features wooden houses, canals and manicured gardens.

This evening, gather on board with your small group for a welcome dinner.

Please note regarding Wi-Fi on board: Shipwide Wi-Fi/WLAN connection (free of charge) is available only in harbor. If stable Internet access is critical to you, VBT recommends that you purchase your own bundle before traveling overseas.

Please note regarding RideWithGPS: Due to the limited Wi-Fi onboard, VBT also recommend that you download your VBT Maps & Routes Notes prior to leaving home if you wish to use Ride with GPS on your smartphones. This free service allows you to download VBT daily route notes in advance, prior to your departure from your home computer. During your vacation, you will be able to follow these route notes on your smartphone with turn-by-turn voice navigation as you ride. This option is in addition to VBT’s traditional printed maps and route notes available on tour.

DAY 4: Cheese & clog shop visit / Cycle Purmerend / Edam / Volendam / Sail to Hoorn

After breakfast, depart the ship and cycle to a nearby, family-run cheese and clog shop to see a short demonstration and enjoy a cheese tasting. Then, cycle along the dikes to Purmerend, enjoying lovely views of the famous Dutch polder landscapes, a tranquil and colorful canvas of dikes, agricultural fields and small rural settlements. More than 400 years ago, between 1607 and 1612, the Dutch succeeded in reclaiming land in an area that was at the time still an inland sea by using 43 windmills. In the process, the lake of De Beemster was transformed into a beautiful landscape that lies 11½ feet (3.5 meters) below sea level and is divided into a tight geometric pattern of squares and quadrants. Today, it is recognized by UNESCO as “a creative masterpiece,” with 17th-century influences that are still clearly visible throughout the entire area.

Shortly after leaving Purmerend, you’ll stop for a picnic lunch at a family-run farm in a small pretty village. After lunch, continue cycling to Edam, a lovely town known for its famous cheese covered in red or yellow wax. In the 17th century, the town’s specialty became one of the most popular cheeses in the world, as sailors could take the wheels of Edam on their voyages. Because of the wax, the cheese doesn’t spoil easily, and it could be traded for spices and other riches of the East. It’s worth stopping here for a coffee and a stroll through the lanes and by the canals.

Continuing along the main dike of the Ijsselmeer, you arrive at the main promenade of Volendam, where you meet the ship. You will have some time to explore the souvenir shops before boarding the ship and sailing to Hoorn (approx. 2½-hour voyage).

Upon arrival at Hoorn, which dates to the 8th century, you’ll have the chance to explore the historic city center and try one of the many local restaurants for dinner on your own.

Hotel: Ship Leafde fan Fryslân.
Meals: B, L
Daily Options: 24 miles (39 km)

DAY 5: Cycle to Enkhuizen / Home-hosted visit

Today’s ride takes you through small rural hamlets and villages en route to Enkhuizen. A great place to stop for coffee is the De Krijgsman (The Warrior), a windmill that traces its history as far back as 1602. This is one of the so called “trades mills”—part of a handful of around 20 old Dutch windmills still used today by their owners to produce flour commercially. A small café at the mill serves snacks made from their own flour.

Continuing on your route, you pass many large commercial greenhouses, one of which you have the opportunity to visit. The owner will show you around his tomato greenhouse and explain how, through climate and irrigation tools, he enhances both the quality and quantity of his production.

Your ride finishes in Enkhuizen. In the 17th century, Enkhuizen was one of the wealthiest cities of Holland. It gained power and influence as a harbor of the VOC (Dutch East India Company), which shipped spices from Asia. Enkhuizen’s rich history is still noticeable today as you walk through the old inner city with its numerous state mansions, canals, churches, city walls and harbors.

At 4:30 p.m., local hosts will meet you at the ship and escort you back to their home. During a chat over coffee/tea and cake, you will have the opportunity to learn about everyday life in this part of The Netherlands and experience a local’s home. Your hosts can also give you recommendations for dinner this evening on your own.

Hotel: Ship Leafde fan Fryslân
Meals: B
Daily Options: 21 miles (34 km)

DAY 6: Sail to Stavoren / Loop ride

After breakfast today, weather permitting, you’ll set sail across the IJsselmeer to the port of Stavoren in Friesland (approx. 4 hours). If you wish, you can help the ship captain sail the Leafde fan Fryslân. Or you can simply sit back on deck and enjoy the invigorating journey while keeping watch for seals and other marine and bird life. Lunch will be served on board.

You’ll disembark in Stavoren, which was granted city rights between 1060 and 1067, making it the oldest city in Friesland. Cycle out of town on a loop ride through slightly rolling countryside quite different from what you have already experienced. Small communities are dotted with dairy and equestrian farms—look out for the Frisian breed, which resembles a black, light-draft horse. Also, keep your eyes open for the double swan motif at the gable top of many of the older farms and barns. This is design is typical of this region.

Dinner is served on board the ship this evening.

Hotel: Ship Leafde fan Fryslân
Meals: B, L, D
Daily Options: 18 miles (30 km)

DAY 7: Cycle to Lemmer through Gaasterland

Our ride today initially follows the dike along the Ijsselmeer into Gaasterland, renowned for its sandy heights. The name Gaasterland derives from the Frisian word for these heights (gaasten), which came into being during the Ice Age, when boulder clay from Scandinavia was deposited on this terrain. These hills have an elliptical shape and are over 32.8 feet (10 meters) high.

In the small settlement of Mirns, you’ll pass a cemetery where a B-24 American bomber made an emergency landing on December 22, 1943, and destroyed the belfry in the cemetery. All seven crew members perished. There is a small plaque to mark the event.

Leaving the dike, you’ll enter Rijsterbos, a 300-year-old forest. Your journey continues through this wooded area to the town of Balk. Your route then takes you along the tree-lined river Luts, which flows through the center of town.

Shortly afterward, you’ll arrive at the fortress city of Sloten. With a population of less than 800, it is one of the smallest cities in The Netherlands. Enjoy time at leisure to wander the narrow streets, relax and find a spot for lunch on your own.

Continuing on to the fishing port of Lemmer, you will find the Leafde fan Fryslân moored for the night. Dinner will be served on board this evening. Maybe after dinner you’ll take a stroll into town.

Hotel: Ship Leafde fan Fryslân
Meals: B, D
Daily Options:  21 or 27 miles (33 or 44 km)

DAY 8: Steam-driven pumping station visit / Weerribben-Wieden National Park

Start the day with a short ride to ir. D.F.Woudagemaal, the largest steam-driven pumping station in the world still in use and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Thanks to this monumental pumping station, 1,056,688 gallons (4 million liters) of water per minute can be pumped by steam from the Frisian drainage pool into the IJsselmeer, keeping the area dry during high water. After watching a short 3D movie in the impressive Visitors’ Center, you will be escorted on a guided tour of the pumping station with its majestic machine hall and adjoining boiler house.

Afterward, cycle back to Lemmer through open polder countryside and a forested area before arriving at the small town of Ossenzijl. Here, you’ll enter the Weerribben-Wieden National Park. This park is the largest freshwater wetland in northwestern Europe and is a peaceful oasis for plants, animals and humans.

A bicycle path takes you through the center of the park, away from roads, where you can enjoy the tranquility of the region. Keep your eyes peeled for a fleeting kingfisher or—if you’re really lucky—an otter, the symbol of the park. Your morning ride culminates in Kalenberg, where you’ll find options for lunch on your own.

Continue on bike paths out of the park. You might stop in Blokzijl, an extremely pretty city that you might want to stop and explore. You can shuttle from here to the mooring, if you wish.

If you prefer to continue cycling, a twisting route takes you through an agricultural landscape of narrow strip fields surrounded by dikes en route to the town of Sint-Jansklooster and the small city of Zwartsluis, where you’ll rejoin the ship.

Enjoy dinner on board this evening.

Hotel: Ship Leafde fan Fryslân
Meals: B, D
Daily Options:  21 or 31 miles (34 or 50 km)

DAY 9: Sail to Lelystad / Cycle through Oostvaardersplassen / Sail to Amsterdam

Set sail again this morning to the busy harbor of Lelystad (approx. 3 hours). Here, you’ll disembark for your last day of cycling. From the interesting architecture of residential Lelystad, you’ll enter Oostvaardersplassen—a nature reserve known for its rewilding, or restoring of an area to its natural state. Sections of the ride will take you through forested areas, while others give you panoramic views of expansive reed beds and marshes. This is a birdwatchers’ paradise.

Gather with your travel mates along the way for a picnic lunch outside the Visitors’ Center.

Meeting your ship again in the small harbor of Oostvaardersdiep, embark and begin your return voyage to Amsterdam (approx. 2 hours). Dine aboard ship one last time this evening.

Hotel: Ship Leafde fan Fryslân
Meals: B, L, D
Daily Options: 19 miles (30 km)
