VBT Announces New Walking Vacation to Argentina’s Patagonia

Thrilling Walks Showcase Andean Peaks, Pristine Lakes, and Massive Glaciers

BRISTOL, VT — VBT Bicycling and Walking Vacations, the award-winning provider of deluxe active vacations, has announced the premiere departures of Argentina: Walking in Patagonia, a new itinerary to one of the last wild places on earth.

This unique itinerary is centered around the small outpost villages of El Calafate and El Chalten. From these home bases, travelers will walk well-groomed trails among dramatic landscapes, such as towering Andean peaks and vast Patagonian plains, known locally as pampas. And though the region is known for its rustic atmosphere, VBT has secured Patagonia’s best deluxe accommodations – including Los Sauces, the El Calafate, a European-influenced luxury resort, and Los Notros, the only lodge in Los Glacieres National Park with direct views of the Perito Moreno Glacier.

“I’m thrilled that VBT can offer a walking vacation to this captivating part of the world,” said Chris Skilling, the company’s Director of Worldwide Product. “Our walking trips have become enormously popular, and we’ve been hearing from a lot of our travelers that they are eager to explore more places on foot with us. This trip is a direct result of their feedback.”

Skilling explained that as he created this itinerary, he included many opportunities to connect with Patagonia’s culture and great outdoors. “Travelers will cruise past the colossal glaciers and icebergs on Lake Argentino,” he said, “then stop to witness a bygone era of the gaucho and estancia lifestyle at a century-old ranch. And there’ll be opportunity to taste local cuisine during picnics, a typical Argentine barbecue, and a lesson in preparing mate tea, the national drink.” But this trip, he continued, doesn’t end with Patagonia. “For the first time, we’re offering trip extensions in the famous Mendoza Wine Region and in Buenos Aires, ‘the Paris of Latin America.’”

Gregg Marston, President of VBT, added, “Our travelers are overwhelmingly telling us that they love exploring a destination on their own two feet. To meet their demand, I’m pleased that we now offer 9 Walking Vacations in Italy, Ireland, Croatia, France, Portugal, Peru, Costa Rica and now Argentina. We chose Argentina obviously for the stunning beauty of Patagonia, but also because the strength of the U.S. dollar there allows us to offer the very best value.”
First departures of Argentina: Walking in Patagonia are this Fall. The company is also offering Winter 2012 dates for those travelers eager to escape Winter’s chill. “Our Winter is Argentina’s Summer,” Skilling points out, making it the perfect time to visit.

Founded in 1971, VBT Bicycling and Walking Vacations is celebrating its 40th Anniversary this year. The company offers 37 deluxe bicycling and walking tours in 26 countries worldwide, including destinations in Europe, Costa Rica, New Zealand, Vietnam, Peru, Argentina and the U.S.A. Each trip includes all accommodations, many meals, two expert local Trip Leaders, unique sightseeing and cultural activities, and full vehicle support.  Unlike other companies, VBT also includes international airfare and air fuel surcharges in its trip cost. As a commitment to its unsurpassed value, VBT guarantees its travelers that 2011 prices are less than or equal to 2010 prices.
