Why You'll Love This Tour

Overview

The Amalfi Coast & Capri

Pastel-washed villages are sculpted into hillsides. The air is filled with the scent of lemon groves. Cascading flower gardens spill their bounty at every turn. On VBT’s most popular walking vacation, together we’ll braid fresh mozzarella, explore the ruins of Pompeii, and walk paths that delight and inspire on the lush isle of Capri, the forested Lattari Mountains, and the breathtaking terraced perches of Ravello.

Cultural Highlights

  • Discover the world-renowned 2,000-year-old volcanic ruins of Pompeii in the company of a local expert.
  • Walk the forested Alta via dei Monti Lattari trail leading to thrilling, expansive views of the Gulf of Salerno.
  • Savor lunch at a family owned organic farm, where we’ll learn how to braid fresh mozzarella in a hand-on demonstration.
  • Amble among the spectacular villas and manicured gardens on the legendary isle of Capri.
  • Roam the dramatic terraces of Ravello, where artists have found inspiration for centuries.
  • Enjoy traditional Neapolitan dishes, including wood-fired pizza, and a breathtaking panorama at a family-run trattoria.
  • Learn the ancient craft of papermaking in Amalfi, whose exquisite paper has been prized since the Renaissance.
  • Trek the “Path of the Gods” in Agerola, where the vista includes the ocean home of the mythical Sirens.
  • Share a picnic lunch after a walk through a chestnut forest on our down a hillside trail to lovely Positano.

What to Expect

This tour features a combination of paved roads and easy terrain, mixed with moderate hills, uneven footpaths on downhill slopes, and cobbled steps. On rainy days the footpaths can be muddy and steps can be slippery. Our VBT support van is available at specific meeting points for those who need assistance. Both morning and afternoon walking options are available most days. Ideal for experienced walkers and enthusiastic beginners. Several of the walks require a transfer from our hotel to the start of the walk. Our tour leaders often use this time in the van for our morning route review, so we can enjoy a more leisurely morning at breakfast.

Itinerary & Map
Or, Expand All Days
DAY 1: Depart U.S. / Fly overnight to Naples

Depart the U.S. for Naples, Italy. The particulars of your arrival overseas are detailed with your flight itinerary.

DAY 2: Arrive in Naples

Arrive at the Capodichino Airport in Naples, Italy, where a VBT representative meets you and helps you transfer (approximately 45 minutes) to your Naples hotel. The rest of the day is free to discover and dine on your own, using the VBT City Information included in your Final Travel Booklet as your guide.

If you are going to be delayed meeting our transfer representative for more than 15 minutes due to delayed or lost luggage, please have airport staff page our driver with your last name so they may be notified of your delay. You may also contact our One Call travel assistance to advise of your delay and they will contact our transfer service. Our drivers are only able to wait for up to 45 minutes from the time your flight lands after which you would be responsible for your own transfer.

Please note: If you arrive early, your hotel room may not be available until 1:00 pm, in which case you may store your luggage with the reception desk.

Please note: VBT transfer times and departure points are finalized in advance and cannot be modified for individual guests. If you fly in earlier than the scheduled program dates, transportation from the airport will be at your own expense.

You have the rest of the day free to discover this fascinating city on your own. Perhaps you'll explore one of its many museums, or to stroll through the picturesque Borgo Marinaro neighborhood, located just across from our hotel. Tonight, dine on your own in one of the cozy restaurants nearby.

Hotel: Grand Hotel Santa Lucia

DAY 3: Meet Trip Leaders / Walking visit of Pompeii / Sorrento / Welcome reception

VBT No-Air Package guests: Meet your VBT Trip Leaders at 9:00 am in the lobby of the Grand Hotel Santa Lucia (Via Partenope 46; Tel: +39 0817640666); they will be wearing VBT staff garments. Transfer to the hotel is on your own. Please come to the meeting dressed in your walking gear and carrying your backpack. A taxi from the railway station costs about 12-15 euros/$20 USD. If your arrival at the hotel is scheduled for later than 9:00 am, or if you are delayed, please contact the hotel, and the hotel staff will pass your message along to our VBT Trip Leaders. VBT highly recommends flying to Italy at least one day before the tour begins; this allows you to rest and recover from jet lag before you begin sightseeing and walking. If you are delayed past our 9:40 am departure time, please transfer directly to our Sorrento hotel. However, you will miss the visit of Pompeii.

VBT Air Package and Pre-Extension guests: Meet your VBT Trip Leaders at 9:00 am in the main lobby; they will be wearing VBT staff garments. Please come to the meeting dressed in your walking gear and carrying your backpack.

After an orientation and safety briefing led by our Trip Leaders, we board a private motorcoach and transfer to Pompeii. Upon arrival, we meet a local expert for a guided tour of the site. At dawn on August 25, 79 AD, the violent eruption of Mount Vesuvius caused the total destruction of Pompeii. In just a few moments, all the residents of Pompeii perished doing whatever they could to survive. Tremendous amounts of ash and cinder covered and preserved the scene exactly as it was at that instant. That's why, today, we know exactly how Romans lived 2,000 years ago. Our guide will tell us, for example, that posters were used to advertise elections and support party candidates, and that the word “candidate” comes from candid, the name of a special tunic worn by those running for office to prove they had no criminal record. Lunch is on your own in Pompeii.

Later in the afternoon, we shuttle to our hotel in Sorrento and settle in. Tonight we enjoy a welcome cocktail before dinner at our hotel.

Hotel: Grand Hotel Cocumella
Alternate Hotel: Grand Hotel La Favorita
Meals: B, D
Daily Options: 2 miles in Pompei on flat, cobblestone road, plus 1 mile in Sorrento on flat, paved city roads.

DAY 4: Sorrento Peninsula

Today we drive to Sant'Agata dei Due Golfi to explore the Sorrento Peninsula. We follow the red-and-white markings of the Alta via dei Monti Lattari trail, a path that winds upwards into a beautiful chestnut forest. As the woods open up, masses of multicolored, aromatic flowers are on display. Right before the promontory of Malacoccola, the view of the entire Gulf of Salerno opens before us. We continue to Torca, where a short shuttle takes us to our lunch stop, a family-owned organic farm where we'll also learn how to braid mozzarella during a hands-on demonstration. Later, choose to return to Sorrento on foot or by shuttle, taking in more views of the gulf from above. In Sorrento, enjoy free time to shop, explore the town, or relax at our hotel's swimming pool and private pier.

Dinner is on your own tonight. Perhaps you'll try Gnocchi alla Sorrentina, made with a Bolognese sauce and fiordilatte (local mozzarella), at a nearby restaurant.

Hotel: Grand Hotel Cocumella
Alternate Hotel: Grand Hotel La Favorita
Meals: B, L
Daily Options: Morning: Morning: 4.4 miles on a dirt path with some rocks, ascending on the first mile, followed by a flat, then long downhill on steps. Easier option: 3.3 miles on gently a gently ascending dirt path. Afternoon option: 3 miles downhill with many steps.

DAY 5: Ferry to Capri

Early this morning, we walk to the Sorrento harbor, taking a moment to drink in panoramic views of the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius. We then board a hydrofoil to ferry across the Sorrento Peninsula to the celebrated island of Capri.

Arriving at the famous piazzetta, the hub of the island, we start along an easy walking path leading to Villa Jovis. As we stroll, our senses will be enchanted by the aroma of jasmine and the views of manicured gardens full of flowers. We'll explore Villa Jovis, built by Emperor Tiberius in the third century as a strategic point where he could dominate and control the opposite coast. We enjoy incredible views from here. The Jump of Tiberius—a sheer cliff soaring more than 1,100 feet—is the infamous site from which Tiberius had his enemies thrown into the sea.

We continue walking through a thick Mediterranean park where strawberry trees, myrtle, clematis, honeysuckle, laurel, wild asparagus and cyclamen thrive. After passing by Villa Lysis, built by an eccentric French count in 1905, you can choose to explore Capri's inviting shops and cafés, or continue to Arco Naturale and Grotta di Matermania, a natural cove used to honor Cybele, the Magna Mater, or Great Mother, of the gods. It is located down a long flight of stairs and in a thick forest. This is also an ideal time to stop for lunch on your own in one of the island cozy restaurants or to picnic in the shade of a garden overlooking the azure sea.

After regrouping, our walk continues to the eastern rim of the island, we see the amazing and famous Faraglioni cliffs, three rocky colossi protruding from the sea. Then, we continue to the Augustus Gardens, where the views of the cliffs and the curled Via Krupp are gorgeous. Our trail ends at Capri's shopping district. From here, we loop back to the piazzetta, where we began our walk.

You'll have some time to discover the fascinating area around the piazzetta before we return via hydrofoil to the mainland—and our next destination, the town of Amalfi. En route, we take in the panoramic vistas of the Amalfi Coast from the sea. In Amalfi, a short shuttle brings us to our hotel in Ravello, where we settle in and dine in the on-site restaurant, savoring scenic views of the surrounding area along with our meal.

Hotel: Villa Fraulo
Meals: B, D
Daily Options: Morning: Morning: 4.5 miles on flat to lightly rolling paved and cobblestone paths. Afternoon option: 1.7 to 2.7 mile descent with steps.

DAY 6: Ravello / Valley of the Mills / Amalfi

After breakfast, we roam the terraces of Ravello with our Trip Leaders, beginning in the peaceful pedestrian-only center. Admire the white-faced Duomo in Piazza Vescovado and the Arabic-Norman towers of Villa Rufolo, where German composer Richard Wagner was inspired to create music for the scene in Klingsor's magic garden in his opera Parsifal.

Later, continue exploring Ravello on your own. Perhaps you'll visit Villa Cimbrone and its beautiful gardens. Or join our Trip Leaders for a walk to Scala and Pontone. For lunch, we savor traditional Neapolitan dishes—including pizza cooked in a wood-fired oven—and breathtaking views at a family-run trattoria. Then, we trace vineyard-laden terraces to the Valley of the Ferriere, a magnificent nature reserve in the Valley of the Mills.

As we proceed along a trail covered in moss and ferns, our Trip Leaders show us calcara, large pits where lime was made by burning huge blocks of limestone for days. We'll also see the spandituri, or paper-hangers, buildings now in ruins but once used to dry paper. As we reach Amalfi, we stop at the Museo della Carta, a unique museum housed in an ancient paper mill, where we learn how paper was made from rags. During the 15th century, Amalfi's paper was so prized that many foreign authors demanded to be published in Naples just so they could use the coveted material. You can buy some of this exquisite handmade paper in the museum's gift shop, if you like.

In Amalfi, enjoy time at leisure to visit the beautiful Duomo and stroll along the charming side streets. You might also sit down at sidewalk café to enjoy a delizia al limone—a confection made from limoncello-soaked sponge cake and lemon custard—or a slice of pastiera, a cake made with ricotta cheese and ground wheat that's been soaked for several days in running water.

Back in Ravello, you have time to relax by the scenic swimming pool of our elegant hotel.
Dinner is on your own tonight.

Please note: Ravello is well known for its classical music festivals. For assistance with booking tickets, contact the reception desk.

Hotel: Villa Fraulo
Meals: B, L
Daily Options: Morning: 3.2 to 4.7 miles of rolling terrain on paved roads and dirt paths with some steps. Afternoon option: 3.1 miles on flat to lightly rolling dirt paths.

DAY 7: Agerola and the "Path of the Gods" / Positano

Today we shuttle to Agerola, Italy's dairy capital, where we gradually descend on foot along a scenic stretch between Biscotto Caves and Nocelle known as the “Path of the Gods” for its heavenly views. The path is well marked and offers views of Capri and the islets of Li Galli, or Sirenuse, where the mythical Sirens attracted seafarers with their melodious songs. At Colle Serra, we cross the pass and continue down to Nocelle where, after lunch on your own, our paths divide: You can shuttle by van or continue walking to Montepertuso, where, according to legend, the Madonna was challenged by the devil to punch a hole in a towering mountain (pertuso means “hole” in Neapolitan dialect). The views from here are simply amazing.

From Montepertuso, we shuttle to our next destination, Positano, built as a nativity scene set on the side of a mountain. Our beautiful and historic hotel is right in the center of the quiet pedestrian area. Its manicured garden—the pride and passion of owner Marilù Attanasio—is one of the most beautiful in the Amalfi Coast. From the balcony of our rooms, we'll breathe in the heady aromas of the garden's vibrant flowers and gaze at the colorful, majolica-tiled cupola of nearby Santa Maria Assunta Church.

Spend the rest of the afternoon at leisure. Relax by the hotel swimming pool or at the sandy beach just a few steps from our hotel. You might also stroll through the town's narrow streets, filled with art galleries and boutiques. The clothing industry in Positano was so popular and influential in the 1970s that the style they created became popularly known as “Positano Style.” In addition to clothing, you can find handmade ceramics, jewelry, leather footwear and paintings by the many artists who have been inspired by the beauty of the region.

After an orientation walk with our Trip Leaders through Positano's labyrinthine hillside streets, choose from among many fine local restaurants for dinner on your own tonight.

Hotel: Palazzo Murat
Alternate Hotel: Hotel Villa Franca
Meals: B
Daily Options: 4 to 5.3 miles descending to sea level on dirt paths with some rocks and steps.

We'll walk through a chestnut forest before stopping for a picnic lunch along the way, then continue our descent to Positano, delighting in spectacular views of the turquoise waters and the rugged, serpentine coast. This is one of our shortest walks, so take your time … linger at the overlooks and savor the aromas of rosemary and valerian growing wild on the hillsides.

After returning to Positano, enjoy time at leisure to browse its art studios, rest your legs with a beachside nap, or join our Trip Leaders for a short jaunt. Tonight we feast on gourmet specialties—courtesy of Signora Attanasio—during a festive farewell dinner.

  • This tour is a feast for all of your senses!

If you are interested in being active, while seeing one of the most breathtaking parts of the world, this tour is for you. It fed all of my senses--my body with the hiking, my mind with what I learned from our extraordinary tour guides, and my spirit while spending each day in the grandeur of Mother Nature. Of course, there is no bad food in Italy, and we had some of the best food that could be had. I cannot stop thinking about this absolutely perfect tour.

    Yes, I recommend this tour.

  • Absolutely a great tour

We have traveled to Europe many times, but always did it on our own with a car rental, etc. This was our first tour. We absolutely loved it! No hassle, no worries, great hotels, great food, great guides, no transportation issues to deal with, great scenery, well informed and friendly guides.

    Yes, I recommend this tour.

  • Amazing scenery!

I was looking for a way to recharge and the VBT Amalfi Coast tour sounded just right. This vacation exceeded my expectations in every respect. The daily hikes along the coastal mountains, while challenging at times, were wonderful exercise and provided spectacular views of turquoise sea, majestic cliffs, terraced hillsides, vibrant wildflowers, and picturesque villages below. All the hotels were luxurious and several were historic making me feel very pampered. Each town was unique and provided charm, history, and wonderful shopping. I can’t compliment our two guides Vincenzo and Ulisse enough. Their local knowledge about the area, their enthusiasm, and unfailing attention to our needs truly made this a memorable vacation.

  • Breathtaking views and beautiful culture await you………..

I haven’t had the opportunity or the means to travel outside the US for close to 20 years. When a friend approached me half-joking and asked me if I wanted to travel to Italy in May 2014, I said YES! I’m ½ Italian and had never been to this part of Europe. I chose VBT over several other tour companies offering the same type trip. I must tell you, I read every review posted and made my final decision based on the honest/candid reviews I read regarding VBT. I knew it was going to be beautiful, never doubted that, but physically being there experiencing the culture, amazing views, weather, food, wine and exceptional tour guides was truly an experience of a life time. If you are considering traveling, I strongly recommend doing the research to find one that fits your every need. I did, I chose VBT. I have already been on line looking at 2015 travel opportunities with VBT. I can’t wait to go on another adventure with them!! Ciao!

    Yes, I recommend this tour.

  • Amalfi Coast - A dream come true

I dreamt about this vacation for over a year. The reality far exceeded my imagination. The beauty of the Italian coast, the culture of the people, the history, not to mention the food and hotels. All first class! I would absolutely recommend (and already have) this VBT walking tour, and our awesome tour guides, Vincenzo and Ulisse.

  • Only One Significant Concern...

This past May I took the Walking Tour of the Amalfi Coast and, overall, it was an incredible and wonderful trip. However, I feel it is only fair to warn that VBT seems to have some issues serving single travelers who cannot be paired with a roommate. On two of the nights of my tour, my accommodations were really unacceptable. On the first formal night of the tour I was given a room in a building separate from the rest of the tour and in a building which appeared to be used to house staff, not guests (an unlocked door, no lobby or staff present anywhere near the entrance). I said good night to everyone at the welcome dinner and walked to my separate building on my own while everyone else went upstairs to truly lovely accommodations. I had a similar experience on the final night in Rome where, again, I was placed in a separate building which was unlocked but with no lobby or staff anywhere near the entrance. Again, I suspect the building is used for purposes other than guest accommodations as I saw no other guests there. The room also had a leak and I was instructed by hotel staff to mop up the water myself and that they would provide me with replacement towels. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend VBT for women traveling independently unless they know in advance that they have been paired with a roommate. Independent travelers pay a single supplement, and they are clearly NOT guaranteed equivalent accommodations to the rest of the guests. This also presents a security issue for women traveling alone. These were rooms isolated from working staff and other guests. Other than this surprising experience, the trip was wonderful--fabulous (highly knowledgable and professional) tour guides, incredible scenery, terrific support for the hiking, an extremely well-planned out itinerary and beautiful hotels on the Amalfi Coast. You need a roommate, though.

This trip was wonderful. The itinerary was excellent- daily hikes were a fantastic way to explore this beautiful part of Italy. Our guides were superb from every aspect. Knowledgeable and attentive to each and every person's needs. Our hotels were first rate. VBT does this right. Good size group -we were 19- all ages. I liked that there wasn't a lot of free time.If shopping is top on your list, this trip is not for you.Eat all the gelato you want because you will burn enough calories each day to make that ok. A dream trip.

  • Exquisite culinary experiences punctuated by enough walking to remove the calories consumed!

Sure, the Amalfi Coast walking tour will have your hand tired from checking off many of those "1001 things to do before you die" but the real secret is in the food. Be prepared to taste meals and snacks that bring tears to your eyes. Take the optional gelato-making class in Sorrento and make sure that you taste "Prefumo di Sorrento" before you leave, the most memorable gelato of my life. The buffalo mozzarella making and braiding demonstration creates fresh products delivered directly to your lunch table. And more! The real pizzas! The simply-grilled fish that were in the Mediterranean just an hour before you sat down! The lunch-sized pasta "snack" on the last day! And by the way, take Vincenzo's advice to go to Netta's Cumpa' Cosimo on your "free" night in Ravello - let Netta suggest your dinner items, some might not even be on the menu. You won't be disappointed; we weren't. Cumpa' Cosimo just happens to be mentioned in "1001 things to do before you die", with good reason.

  • Our tour leaders, Vincenzo and Ulisse were incredible

Long overdue for this review. In late Sept. of 2013 a group of 19 people from the USA traveled to the Amalfi coast looking for adventure and found it. It started with our trip leaders, Vincenzo and Ulisse who were incredible, resourceful, entertaining, knowledgable, caring, loving and respectful, not enough words can describe how these two gentlemen made our trip, a trip of a lifetime. You can look at all the pictures in books and online of the Amalfi coast and still not capture the true beauty of this place unless you see it yourself or experience it with VBT tours. You experience so much, touching local people and their customs to historic sites, facts and myths explained impeccably by Vincenzo and Ulisse, great food, drinks, entertainment and most of all the beauty that this part of Italy has to offer. It was an incredible journey for the four of us, especially sharing it with our new friends from around the United States and in Italy. Please, not for one second hesitate to go on this trip. Thanks to VBT, Vincenzo and Ulisse for the love of their work and country and their attentiveness to put such a wonderful adventure together for all of us to enjoy worry free!

  • Incredible adventure

This challenging but beautiful hiking adventure was terrific. The local guides made everyone comfortable and successful despite each person's different abilities and experience. The scenery was spectacular, the food delicious, and the unique local experiences (tour of the pasta factory, tour of the paper making factory, lunch at a local farm, limoncello tasting) made it authentic and unique. The total cost in my mind is a bargain since it includes airfare, wonderful accommodations, transfers, many meals, vans, tour guides available all day, and incredible trails and vistas. A wonderful vacation and a wonderful experience.

I can not say enough about this trip. The guides were fun, attentive and informative. The accommodations, hikes, food and wine were all exceptional. My significant other is in the food and beverage industry and always rates service and product on a scale of one to ten and didn't rate anything less than a ten! The views were breathtaking. It was our first trip with VBT and we have booked another for 2014!

Breathtaking and fun are the two terms that easily come to mind for this tour. The views along the coast were beyond description and the villages we hiked through were charming. Each day brought some fabulous new experience that I will continue to mull over and over in my mind for years to come! The guides were professional, warm and personable and gave the entire trip a comfortable and grounded feel. I'd do it again if there weren't so many other places I want to visit first!

  • A Luxurious Adventure

The tour of the Amalfi Coast and Capri exceeded all of my expectations! The tour guides were very knowledgeable about the history, geography, the flora and fauna. As a single traveler I always felt safe and very well looked after. Everywhere I looked was a pictures waiting to be taken, seeing how gelato and pasta is made was very interesting, eating it was delicious!!. The opportunity to experience the food, the wine and the people of Italy were presented everywhere we went. Being able to hike along ancient paths during the day and stay in 4 and 5 star hotels at night was fantastic. I truly felt spoiled, how cold I not sitting on the balcony of my room with a glass a wine looking at the beautiful blue Meditainiane Sea.

  • We made family memories!

We were celebrating a number of family milestones through this trip. Little did we know that the trip itself would become a milestone for our family memories. The beauty of southern Italy, coupled with the food, wine and warmth of the people of the region was only surpassed by the tour's staff, the accommodations and the ease in which we moved through the trip. VBT thought of everything. Hence, it truly was a vacation.

  • Great Family Vacation

Our 4 adult children, my husband and I took this trip in June. It was wonderful to have someone else take care of all of the details and scheduling. And every detail was taken care of which made it truly a vacation for all of us. There were options in the schedule everyday so if people didn't want to do the activity of they day they had choices. Our leaders were very knowledgeable and attentive to travelers needs. We thought the trip was a perfect combination of group activities and individual time which gave us opportunities to do things together as a family. The itinerary took us places we would never have found if we had tried to coordinate this trip ourselves. Some of our favorite memories will be hiking, the views and restaurants we found away from the common tourist sites! This trip provided us with a great family experience and one we will cherish for a long time!

    Yes, I recommend this tour.

  • Amalfi coast walking april

The pace of this tour was perfect, accommodating a fair age range, I am 69 and consider myself in good shape, but every participant proved equally or or more capable, despite the relatively rough terrain to which I am not accustomed, as I live in a flat city. The guides were responsive to each of us, seeing that no one felt inadequate or left out. I was alone, as was another woman who quickly became my friend - we met at the airport pick-up and spent a couple of days eating and exploring Naples together. The trails we walked were indeed beautiful, not overrun with other groups, and the planned lunches were delicious, and I am used to a diet from farmer's markets and Whole Foods. I was never particularly tired, certainly not hungry, rarely the wrong temperature as I followed the packing list to the letter, and suffered no aches or pains. I attribute this to the thoughtful expertise of the organizers. This trip was carefully planned and professionally executed. The ability to explore alone, with provided maps, was a plus. I would have appreciated direct flights, which are possible from the east coast.

  • Excellent trip with terrific leaders and wonderful hotels

This trip walking and hiking along the Amalfi Coast makes you feel sorry for travelers going by on big tour buses and thinking they have seen the Amalfi Coast. We saw the coastside villages by boat, from above as we hiked the Path of the Gods, and enjoyed the villages free from worry of navigating the narrow roads. Our bus driver was truely a magician. Stopping at specially picked restaurants with fantastic views for lunch and taking time to see gardens in Ravello made the trip oh-so special.

  • Great tour from beginning to end!

The walking tour of the Amalfi Coast was a wonderful vacation for me. There are many walking options offered. I happened to walk all, while some did very little. The two tour guides were always on the walks and were very informative on Italy's history and the regions we visited. Due to rough seas, we had to postpone Capri. The guides were able to contact a restaurant and book us for a special Easter Lunch. It was my best day. The accommodations were very nice, food and wine were great too. I recommend this tour without reservation.

  • Excellent walking tour

The Amalfi Coast and Capri is a walking tour of a lifetime. I enjoyed the villages, the scenery, our walking group and especially our guides. As we traveled from one village to another we could absorb ourselves in the Italian food, majestic scenery, and people . I would recommend to everyone, get your walking shoes on and enjoy the journey.

This was our first experience with VBT and we'd been told by friends who have taken many of their tours to prepare to be impressed - and we were! The quality of the accommodations, tour guides, locations, food, and walks was first rate. And as a bonus we made some excellent friends amongst our fellow travelers. We have been back less than a month and are already planning our next VBT tour. Barbara & Paul

  • Seeing the Amalfi Coast Close Up

My wife and I enjoyed VBT's Tuscany walking tour in 2010 so much that we decided to try the Amalfi Coast one. This tour was an exceptional week as well. The walking was moderately challenging but the views and experiences made it so much more interesting, whether we walked along the inspiring Path of the Gods or encountered workers cutting young chestnut trees into poles that their donkeys would haul out of the forest near Scala. We got insights into a way of life that we would never get otherwise. Because the unique hotels were right in the historic centers of Positano, Sorrento and Ravello we had plenty of time to explore those towns on our own. All in all a terrific trip. Did I mention the food ? It was a vacation for our tastebuds too.

This was my first hiking trip with VBT, and it had all the wonderful features of their cycling trips. During the hikes we saw amazing scenery, including views of the coastal towns and the natural environment. The food was a highlight, with a focus on seafood. The tour included wonderful features...lunch at an agritourismo, ferry rides to and from Capri, and dinners highlighting local cuisine and wine. The guides arranged some optional events...a gelato making lesson, a limoncello tasting, and a boat ride on the last hiking day. What a wonderful way to experience one of the most beautiful regions of the world!

The Amalfi Coast walking tour was just the right blend of nature, exercise, fresh food, fresh air, culture and fun. There were plenty of opportunities to sightsee while covering a less traveled path. Our guides did a superb job of describing the history, culture, and geography as we moved along. Having a choice to walk with a small group, ride in a van or stay in the village and shop each day, provided options to meet a variety of travelers pleasures. The rooms were excellent small European hotels and in most cases the views from our rooms were delightful. The views outside the hotels, both in the villages and on our walks were spectacular!

The Amalfi Coast tour is sensational for gorgeous views, historical interest and wonderful food. The walks all give different perspectives of this peninsula from the sea to the mountaintop ridges and from lemon and olive groves to chestnut forests. The tour also offers a wide arrange of shopping opportunities or quiet village meanderings for those not wishing to be in the crowds. The Amalfi coast walking tour was a fantastic way to intimately explore this beautiful region of Italy. Everyday we were treated to magnificent and sometimes dizzying views and panoramas of the beautiful Mediterranean and the villages that cling to the rugged hillsides of this region. Each town had it's own charms and attractions. Each day brought a new adventure; Pompeii, Sorrento, Capri, Ravello, Amalfi, Positano. Whether we arrived by ferry, van or foot we were always welcomed with open arms at each hotel. Our guides were natives of this region of Italy. They shared their local & historical knowledge of each town and hiking trail. It really was an amazing trip.

  • Amazing Amalfi with VBT !

I have done a number of bike trips with VBT over the years and was looking forward to my first walking trip with VBT. The allure of the Amalfi Coast is legendary, but nothing to what I experienced when I got there. The scenic coast line, fine hotels, great food, historic Pompei, but nothing exceeded my expectations like the two VBT guides, Vincenzo and Ulisse. They went above and beyond to make sure that we had a great vacation. Besides taking good care of all, they offered local options that just made the ttip truly amazing. I now have a degree in making Gelato ! Thank You VBT...

20 years ago we were on a tour of Italy that was to include Pompeii. Unfortunately the day we were scheduled to go was a holiday so all we could do was stand at the gates and look in. For 20 years we've wanted to go back so when we saw Pompeii listed on the (then) new walking tour of the Amalfi coast we signed up. This was by far one of the best "adventure" trips we've ever taken. The excellent guides and the level of accommodations exceeded our expectations. And yes, we had a fabulous tour of Pompeii!

  • Quanto ti amo, Amalfi!

You couldn't find a more romantic place in Italy than the Amalfi coast. To walk it, like hundreds of thousands before you, you are treated with every step to some of the world's most spectacular panoramas. You don't want this walk to end, for with every step you are awed over and over. As D H Lawrence phrased it, the Amalfi coastline is '... where the gods of today are forsaken and you find a lost self again.' The food is fresh and simple, the air crisp and clean, the people friendly and fun, the guides competent and completely in love with Amalfi. Pack your bags for longer than the tour allows, for all this suggests you won't want to leave.

Not knowing exactly what we were getting into, a group of us booked the trip to the Amalfi Coast and Capri. The hikes took us on magnificent trails where views of the coast were spectacular.Probably one of the most important factors was that our guides were sensitive to our needs. The pacing was perfect - when we began to lag behind a bit, out came the chocolate and nuts for a mini-break. Our guides were very knowledgeable about plant life, history, food, cultural events, and of course wine. The accommodations surpassed our expectations.
