Itinerary & Map

DAY 1: Arrive Bar Harbor

Make your own arrangements for travel to Bar Harbor. If you're flying to Maine, VBT will offer a shuttle from Bangor International Airport. The shuttle works on a “show and go” basis and will make its only departure from the airport to the inn at 1:00 pm. Shuttle reservations are not required or available. Meet the driver outside the door across from the escalators. Your shuttle bus will carry “West Bus Service” titles, and the driver will be holding a VBT sign. If you are arriving after this shuttle departs or your flight is delayed, you must make your own arrangements to reach the Bar Harbor Inn.

Guests driving to the tour may leave their car in the Bar Harbor Inn's parking lot, without charge, for the duration of the tour.

Our group meets at the Bar Harbor Inn. After settling in, explore this lovely seaport town until mid-afternoon. At 3:00 pm, join your VBT Trip Leaders for a safety and bike-fitting session, followed by a short warm-up ride. At 5:00 pm, meet up with the group for a tour orientation and welcome reception before our 7:00 pm lobster bake dinner at the inn.

Hotel: Bar Harbor Inn
Meals: D
Daily Options: 7 miles

DAY 2: Cycle carriage trails to Jordan Pond

Today, cycle on Acadia's famed car-free carriage roads, which were established by John D. Rockefeller. Your loop takes you around Eagle Lake to Jordan Pond before you enjoy lunch on your own. We recommend stopping at Jordan Pond House for their elegant fare, including their famous lobster stew and golden, lighter-than-air popovers. The afternoon ride offers exceptional views of Bubble Pond and Cadillac Mountain, the first place to view the sunrise in North America for most of the year. Tonight, there are often free concerts on the Town Green.

Hotel: Bar Harbor Inn
Meals: B
Daily Options: 15 or 26 miles

DAY 3: Cycle to Sand Beach / Optional sea kayaking, whale watching or a sunset cruise

Spend the morning riding on the Park Loop Road to Sand Beach, where you can relax on the shore or participate in a short hike. After lunch at the Fabbri Memorial Picnic Area, cycle back to Bar Harbor or, for additional miles, continue on the Park Loop Road past Cadillac Mountain Summit Road. This afternoon, you may choose among optional activities (at your own expense): guided sea kayaking in Frenchman Bay, a whale-watching excursion or a sunset cruise on the schooner Margaret Todd. You may also choose to browse Bar Harbor's charming gift shops and boutiques. For dinner on your own, enjoy one of the fine restaurants in town.

Hotel: Bar Harbor Inn
Meals: B, L
Daily Options: 16 or 23 miles

DAY 4: Explore Northeast Harbor

Today, cycle to the quiet side of Mount Desert Island, where we'll have plenty of time to check out a local microbrewery and enjoy lunch. Then, continue cycling to Northeast Harbor, offering views of the spectacular fjord at Somes Sound. In Northeast Harbor, you will find attractive boutiques, galleries, gardens and eateries. Our accommodation here, Asticou Inn, overlooks the beautiful protected harbor full of sailboats and luxury yachts. Take advantage of the inn's amenities, which include a clay tennis court and a heated outdoor swimming pool. Dinner will be at a local restaurant tonight.

Hotel: Asticou Inn
Meals: B, L, D
Daily Options: 15 or 26 miles

DAY 5: Non-riding Day / Explore Little Cranberry Island and Northeast Harbor

Our exploration today is both by boat and on foot. After a leisurely breakfast at the inn, we’ll board a lobster boat to Little Cranberry Island. This pristine hamlet hosts a year-round community of lobstermen, boat builders, craftsmen, and “rusticators” (those who opt for country living). We'll visit the Islesford Historical Museum before boarding the boat back to Northeast Harbor (30 minutes). Enjoy an optional visit to the Azalea and Thuya Gardens before our final farewell celebration dinner at the inn.

Hotel: Asticou Inn
Meals: B, L, D
Daily Options: Non-cycling day (opportunities for independent riding in the afternoon)

DAY 6: Enjoy the Carriage Trails before departing

This morning, we will cycle up to Acadia National Park and enter the carriage trails one last time, enjoying the views along the west side of Jordan Pond on our way back to Bar Harbor. As we bid adieu, you'll agree with the state's motto that this is truly “the way life should be.”

VBT has arranged facilities for your use between noon and 2:00 pm to shower and change before leaving. The innkeepers of the Bar Harbor Inn ask that you depart by 2:00 pm. A return shuttle to Bangor International Airport will depart the Bar Harbor Inn at 1:00 pm (travel time approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes).

Meals: B
Daily Options: 14 miles

  • Acadia is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been.

This was my 2nd bike tour with VBT. I have used 5 bike tour companies on other tours and I would say VBT is by far my favorite. The tour guides have always been great, you can tell they love riding bikes with people and that they love what they do. There is so much more to a VBT trip than riding a bike. Ride with VBT and you won't regret it.

    Yes, I recommend this tour.

  • I loved this tour so much that I would do it again!

The routes were beautiful and varied. The hills were always worth the effort and they all had the payoff of a downhill rush! The scenery was magnificent and the weather was perfect. Our guides knew just when to give encouragement and even the newest rider accomplished more than they thought possible. I will never forget the view from Cadillac Mountain! I can't wait to return to Acadia National Park.

  • A fabulous way to see the coast of Maine!

Having never traveled to Maine this trip was an excellent way to experience the dramatic coastline of Maine. In addition, riding on the carriage trails with their history and wonderful scenery - plus no auto traffic - makes for truly enjoyable riding no matter your skill level. I recommend this for singles and families alike!

I loved our tour guides. Anne and Tony and Danny were informative and made the trip not only fun but educational. The scenery was fantastic. The exercise was great. The food was delicious. I particularly loved the opportunity to make new friends. I would love to experience another VBT trip with the same group of people!!

  • Our first trip w VBT - and it was Great!

After being encouraged by family and friends to ride with VBT, we chose the Acadia trip as our first ever bike tour. So glad we did! Accommodations, food, route maps and suggested stops all were very nice. The equipment fit the conditions perfectly. Everything that could have been planned out went great (we know VBT does not control the weather...) But as others have said, the guides made the trip unforgettable -- excellent local knowledge, super encouraging and positive, attentive, humorous, kind... This may have been our first VBT trip. I'm sure it wont be our last!

The biking trip in Acadia exceeded my expectations in every way. Anne and Tony, our trip leaders, were outstanding; so knowledgeable and attentive to our needs. The food was wonderful, the accommodations excellent and the people in our group were so compatible that we immediately felt we were with friends. This was one of the best vacations we've had and we are definitely looking forward to more bike trips with VBT!

  • Beautiful Maine coast and Acadia National Park

This tour was a wonderful introduction to the Maine coast. The bike riding on the carriage trails in Acadia National Park was scenic and very interesting for the waterfalls, streams, ponds, trees/plants and the incredible stone bridges! Northeast Harbor was also quite picturesque. The tour leaders provided a great deal of historical information and, because they seem to know everyone every place we went, we were able to meet some true 'locals' who really added to our trip. I would highly recommend this trip.

  • Wonderful way to see a beautiful area.

In May 2011 this was my first ever bike trip & I was concerned the hills might be too much for me. I'm just a weekend recreational rider. Ann and Tony were great with advice on how to handle the "inclines" so that I never felt the need to get off and walk on any of the rides. Food and accommodations were excellent, but what made the trip outstanding was the location (scenery and carriage trails) and the trip leaders' personal care with everyone on the tour. It was such a great experience I signed on for the new 2012 Chesapeake trip within 3 weeks of returning home.

  • So outstanding, it is hard to summarize.

This trip exceeded all of my expectations but first mention must go to the trip leaders. There were so knowledgable and so focused on making sure that we had a good vacation. We were blessed with perfect weather (September 2012) so had maximum opportunity to bike and enjoy scenery and all of the other treats that VBT had for us.

  • My first trip to Maine and Acadia National Park

Our group of 17 had a stellar experience on the final Maine trip of the VBT season 2012! Our guides were local experts and made the trip an experience of a lifetime. We hiked- tasted local Beer and had a local historian's hospitality as well as experiencing the carriage roads and park features. I would recommend this trip to anyone Looking for a different riding experience( carriage roads- no cars etc) The Best was making my way to the top of Cadillac Mountain.. the tortoise and the hare as tony likes to say! This was My third VBT trip and I can't wait to go on another one.. the best way to see ANY area!

The bridges and views of the ocean were the highlights of the trip. We enjoyed the bkikng and the hiking. We recommend the hike around Jordan Pond. We also climbed Cadillac Mountain on our bicycles. The view was worh the climb and we have bragging rights besides. It was lovely to come back to comfortable accomodations. Our guides were so knowledgeable about the area and so attentive. This was our second VBT trip and we are signed up for our third. Thanks for a great experience!

  • Loved Acadia!!

I cannot find the words to express what an all around great experience this tour was. Beside the biking, it includes a side trip to Little Cranberry Island to visit a lobster boat and experience life on an island. The location in Bar Harbor facilitated easy shopping, lots of places to eat and of course the scenery is beyond beautiful. Our tour leaders made this trip exceed expectations. Would return in a heartbeat, what a piece of paradise. VBT goes out of their way to make any tour well rounded and as much fun off the bike as on the bike.

I was thoroughly stunned by the beauty of this part of New England, and I have lived in New England most of my life. Tony and Anne had superb knowledge of the area and its people and showed us such special parts of Acadia. We enjoyed this tour so much. Our trip leaders where very knowledgeable of the area and could offer great suggestions on what to see, where to eat, and how to ride up Cadillac Mt. (3.5 miles 8% grade!!!!) the view was so worth it. The hotels were charming and very comfortable. I would recommend this trip highly, you should be in fairly good riding condition as there are some inclines to go up. (they didn't like to call them hills). I will definitley take another VBT trip.

This was my first ever bike trip, because it was so great, it won't be my last. Everything was well planned and organized. The bikes were great and our guides made sure they stayed that way. All the logistics were well planned. We had time to take in the sites and get a great workout. The food was outstanding and the lodging was just great. • I've now taken up biking!

After not having been on a bike in 18+ years, I decided to give a VBT Maine adventure a try. My traveling companions assured me, "You can do this." I was so excited to see the coastal beauty of Maine and taste the outdoors. Because of the expertise and encouragement of our tour leaders, Tony and Ann, I took to the road. It wasn't "easy," but I had the time of my life. We had great food and beautiful accomodations. This VBT trip has now stirred up the biker girl inside me. I've now taken up spinning and road biking, and I'm looking forward to more biking trips with VBT.

  • Acadia - a magical mystery tour!

Acadia is a one-of-a-kind experience that is best done on a bicycle (and hiking) tour. The carriage roads are a bicyclist's dream come true. And the Maine coast is awe inspiring....and then some. The VBT trip leaders were absolutely remarkable and made the trip truly enjoyable for riders of every experience level. The hikes were an unexpected joy as was the boat trip to Little Cranberry Island which might just be the highlight of the tour.

The Acadia carriage trails and countryside offer some of the loveliest scenery you will find. The accommodations and food were a delight. The whole experience is very well planned and supported by outstanding guides, making it thoroughly enjoyable and worth every cent. I'll be back.

  • Fabulous trip. We can't wait to do it again

Everything was terrific--the leaders, the biking, the food, the scenery, even the weather except for one day of rain which was fun too. We had a fabulous time and will be back for this trip again and others. The optional trip up Cadillac Mountain was more than we were ready for on day 3 but by the end of the trip we asked our trip leader Ann if there was anyway to do it. She accommodated us with a special drop off with directions from there. It was the highlight of our trip. It showed us how much we progressed in our riding ability and that we now have confidence to tackle hills where ever we are--in low gear and just keep moving. Can't say enough about how wonderful this trip was. Loved Maine--so beautiful and peaceful.

My husband and I loved the Purely Acadia bike tour, especially the trails through the Acadia National Park with its majestic trees and lovely vistas. Our guides were funny and extremely helpful. I am from New England and live in Colorado, so the atmosphere and scenery evoked happy childhood memories. Highly recommended.

Outstanding trip. The biking distance(s) and difficulty was just right. Food and Inn's were the best. The trip leaders made you feel right at home from your first meeting with them. This was a VACATION and we could not have asked for a better relaxing week.

  • Explore Acadia National Park and Meet the Locals

Tourism is alive and well in this part of Maine but this tour focuses on the environs Acadia has to offer, tapping into the local culture and enjoying the company of others who like to keep fit. We all live busy lives doing what we do. Your guides will help you step away from that bustle, slow down, live in the now and "be one with the lotus". Fair warning, the "slight inclines" on Maine's coast can be character builders for those who would prefer an easy ride. That said, the views more than make up for your labor.

The tour was absolutely marvelous, with fall colors and good weather. I loved the food, and I think I might have gained weight :( But it was fun trying to ride it off. I enjoyed the tour of the island and our special stops along the way! I highly recommend this tour!

I had no idea Maine was such a lovely state. Acadia, with it's carraige roads were just a delight to ride. No cars made for a relaxing, beautiful ride. Our tour leaders were wonderful and so knowledgeable of the area. They continue to be our friends. I highly recommend this tour.

  • what better place to bicycle than in a National Park

One of the most best kept secrets. Small, friendly towns, and a National Park to see all on a bicycle. The "carriage" paths through the park were void of motorized traffic making it quiet and serene biking through the foliage. The tour leaders were very knowledgeable in the history of the area. Would do it again.

  • A Maine Sampler....

Riding on the carriage trails of Acadia State Park was such a wonderfully unique bicycling experience - there's nothing like it! Being by the Maine Coast, visiting an island, hearing about local history and current activities, was all a great adventure. And staying in two wonderful inns wrapped up the week perfectly.

  • A great Maine adventure!

Loved Acadia Nataional Park and will never forget pedaling along the ocean, up the mountain hillsides, through the forest paths, and learning the history of the area along the way! Our guides showed us wild blueberries to eat along the roadsides and led us to the "melt in your mouth" popovers at our lunch stop. I will never forget the rainy day...the best ever...all of us in rain gear...and laughing as we rode through nature's splendor! I carry life long memories that make me smile, and felt like I truly accomplished an athletic feat while having fun.

  • This was our first experience with VBT. Could not have been better.

We are average bicyclists. Our initial concerns; were we in good enough shape? What additional items/preparations should be made? All that was relieved when we saw the genuine care and concern from Ann & Tony, our tour guides, and the detailed plans that made our "working" vacation a treasure of memories. Though in most groups of 20 people it's hard to imagine getting along with everybody, we actually enjoyed being among this varied background, eclectic bunch of people. The plans were loose enough to allow time by ourselves, or mingling as we chose. High marks to VBT as a perfectly splendid vacation choice!
