Your representative will welcome you to France and arrange for your transfer via taxi or van to your Paris hotel (approximately 60 minutes, depending on traffic). At this time, please verify with your airport representative the time of your private motorcoach transfer to Hotel La Tonnellerie in Tavers, tomorrow. Hotel: Hotel La Tonnellerie
Meals: B, D
Daily Options: 5 miles (8 km)

DAY 4: Ride to Chambord / Marvel at Château de Chambord

Start cycling from the hotel after breakfast, riding on a mix of quieter roads and bike paths to Chambord, home of the remarkable Château de Chambord. Now the largest castle in the Loire Valley, these 440 rooms were never intended to be lived in. The castle was designed as a seasonal hunting lodge and as a venue for hosting large receptions for King Francois I. The monarch built the château from 1519-1547 while living in royal residences in Blois and Amboise. The 21-mile-long garden wall is the longest wall in France. Of particular interest are the castle's double-helix staircases, which allow two people to travel up and down without crossing one another's path. Step back in time during your audio-guided visit here.

In the afternoon, shuttle back to your hotel or ride back along a mostly different route. Spend the late afternoon reading a book in the hotel's garden or taking a swim in the pool. Dinner is included tonight in the hotel.

Hotel: Hotel La Tonnellerie
Meals: B, D
Daily Options: 19 or 32 miles (30 or 51 km)

DAY 5: Transfer to Blois / Walking tour with local guide / Cycle to Amboise via Chaumont

This morning, board a motorcoach bound for the ancient city of Blois. Many medieval ruins remain here in what was the most important city in the region around the mid-13th century. A guided visit of the Old Town with a local historian reveals how the city and its architecture evolved from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.

From Blois, we cycle along the river and through the lovely Loire countryside, nicknamed the “Garden of France” for its abundance of fruits and vegetables. Our first destination is Chaumont, where you can explore the Château de Chaumont and its gardens on your own.

Then, continue to the town of Amboise. Leonardo da Vinci came here to live at the Clos-Luce Manor in 1516, and evidence of his work remains at the manor. The château that dominates the town was once home to Charles VIII, Louis XII and Francois I.

Tonight, enjoy free time to take short walk into town and sample one of its wonderful restaurants.

Hotel: Le Manoir les Minimes
Meals: B
Daily Options: 12 or 25 miles (19.3 or 40.5 km)

DAY 6: Explore Chenonceau

After breakfast, we pedal along a scenic route to the Château de Chenonceau on the Cher River, known as the most romantic of the Loire châteaux. Its history is the stuff of epic novels: King Henry II gave the château as a gift to his beautiful lover, Diane de Poitiers. She built the first gardens and added a bridge to connect the château to the Cher's south shore. After Henry's death, his jealous wife, Catherine de Medici, took the château from Diane and built the unique gallery that today straddles the river. It became her favorite residence, and she later hosted the marriage of her son, Francis II, to Mary, Queen of Scots, here in 1560.

We have ample time to tour Chenonceau, its gardens and maze before picnicking together. This evening, we walk to a nearby wine trader who specializes in aged wines. Enjoy a tasting before exploring Amboise and enjoying dinner on your own.

Hotel: Le Manoir les Minimes
Meals: B, L
Daily Options: 17 or 26 miles (27.3 or 42.2 km)

DAY 7: Vineyards of the Touraine / Tours

After breakfast, we ride the “Loire & Soils” bicycle path on the northern banks of the Loire River, famous for its highly valuable wine production. Viticulture has been practiced here since at least the Middle Ages, when the Catholic Church maintained vineyards at local monasteries. We cycle through Vouvray, where you'll find several options for wine tasting if you wish to explore. We have free time for lunch in Tours before continuing back along La Loire on a Velo bike path into Montlouis sur Loire. There will be free time to explore this pretty small town before continuing to our hotel for the next two nights, Château de la Bourdaisière.

The château is famous for its tomato and dahlia collection, so make sure you explore its magnificent gardens. You may also take advantage of its lovely outdoor swimming pool.

If the weather is good this evening, we will have dinner in the dahlia garden. Otherwise, we'll enjoy the ambiance of one of the lounges inside the château.

Hotel: Château de la Bourdaisière
Meals: B, D
Daily Options: 21 or 30 miles (34 or 49 km)

DAY 8: Discover Villandry / Explore Azay-le-Rideau

After breakfast, we shuttle to the Château de Villandry, known for its symbolic, terraced gardens unlike any other in France. The last of the large châteaux built during the Renaissance on the banks of the Loire, it was completed around 1536. We then cycle on a beautiful bike route along the Loire River and on to Azay-le-Rideau.

In the delightful old village of Azay-le-Rideau, you will have time for independent exploration. Visit the town's 16th-century island château, photograph 15th- and 18th-century houses, and browse the many shops before returning to the hotel by shuttle or by bicycle.

If you choose to cycle back to the hotel, your route takes you along the Indre River, a region that figured prominently in works by Honoré de Balzac, the 19th-century French literary master. The French author referred to Azay-le-Rideau as “a faceted diamond set in the Indre.”

We gather at the hotel for dinner tonight.

Hotel: Château de la Bourdaisière
Meals: B, D
Daily Options: 15, 31 or 43 miles (25, 49 or 70 km)

DAY 9: Transfer to Charles de Gaulle Airport via the Palace of Versailles / VBT No-Air Package ends

VBT No-Air Package guests: The tour ends at our hotel after breakfast this morning. You may make your arrangements to leave the hotel at any time that is convenient. Checkout time is by 11:00 a.m. Trains depart from Tours to Paris and to Charles de Gaulle Airport. You are responsible for all transfer arrangements. A taxi from the hotel to Tours railway station costs approximately 45 euros (3-passenger maximum). We recommend you ask your VBT Trip Leaders or the hotel to help make the reservation at least a day in advance.

VBT Air Package guests: After breakfast, depart for Paris, stopping en route to explore one of the most visited monuments in France, the Palace of Versailles. Wanting to escape the busy life in Paris, and to keep the nobility under his control, Louis XIV built this château, in which he set up home and installed the government. Louis Le Vau was commissioned to renovate and extend an old hunting lodge, Le Notre created the gardens from swampland, and Mansart masterminded the hydraulic display of the fountains. This grand palace served as France's official royal residence from 1682 until 1790.

Once you arrive at the Palace, you will be given an individual audio guide and entrance ticket for the state apartments of the king and queen, the Galerie des Glaces (the Hall of Mirrors, where the Treaty of Versailles was signed to end World War I), and the gardens.

In the mid-afternoon, rejoin the shuttle and transfer to your hotel, located near Charles de Gaulle Airport.

This evening is free. You may wish to dine at our hotel and enjoy their leisure facilities.

Hotel: Hotel Pullman Paris CDG Airport

  • Exceptional leaders & this was our 5th European trip!

From our 1st encounter with our leaders, Valerie & Pierre, we knew that this would be a great week! At our welcome reception in Tavers on June 6th, the 70th anniversary of D-Day, our leaders showed their appreciation for the Americans by unfurling an American Flag!

    Yes, I recommend this tour.

  • The Loire Experience

If there was a VBT guide Hall of Fame, our guides for the Loire Valley vacation, Valerie and Pierre, would be immediate inductees ! The Loire Valley trip has great scenery, great food, and lots of fun. But it is often the small things that you never forget on an amazing vacation. On our first nite together on June 6th/ at the cocktail hour, Valerie and Pierre unfurled and American Flag and said Thank You to the US for D-Day I will never ever forget that moment No ....Thank You Pierre and Valerie !

    Yes, I recommend this tour.

  • Lots of god things...lodging, food, bike paths, scenery!

There were very poor written instructions for each day's ride, which was a big disappointment on this trip. Communication with the guides, both written and oral, was tough. Pierre, especially, was virtually impossible to understand when he presented lengthy morning overviews of where we were headed and what we could expect. Very few people paid attention by the second or third day. I understand that these comments are not suitable for promoting the tour, but they weigh heavily on how I would review the Loire Valley trip. Everything about the bike riding, the lodging and the food was top notch. But would I recommend this particular tour, given my personal, overall, experience? Probably, but I would have to give it more serious consideration, depending on the person's travel experiences.

    Yes, I recommend this tour.

  • A Fairy Tale Trip!

You will not be disappointed with this fairy tale trip. Visiting a different chateau every day was breathtaking ... the gardens, the architecture, the art, the history! There's something for everyone. And do take advantage of the Paris pre-trip. Everybody needs to visit Paris at least once in their lifetime.

  • I always wanted to drink Vouvray in the Loire Valley and VBT made it possible

Years ago I was served a Vouvray wine and that put me on a path to go to the source...the Loire Valley. My husband and I took our first VBT vacation two years before on the Bike and Barge trip in Holland and Belgium. I couldn't image that the Loire Valley trip could be any better, but it was. It was just the right combination of history, cycling, making new friends, and of course, drinking Vouvray! Our trip leaders, Sophie and Adele were fantastic. Knowledgeable, helpful, cheerful, and women who loved their work. The cycling routes were a mix of bike paths, country lanes, with wonderful views of the Loire river. The chateaux and gardens were amazing and made for great stops to get off the bike and be inspired by history. I loved every minute of the trip and can't wait to plan my next VBT experience.

  • Informative, delightful and top notch value tour!

For a number of years I had wanted to do a bike tour of Europe. VBT appeared to offer the best value for the price, I could not have been more pleased. I am now planning my third trip this fall! France is full of old country mansion, and these accommodations were full of history and luxury. Our bike paths were deserted country roads. The mixture of history, exercise, wonderful food and informative visits to sites made you “feel” the country. Our French guides were well studied in their culture and history. I was originally hesitant about group travel but our fellow travelers were like minded people who enjoyed the shared experience. You travel at your own pace, never feel lost or join the group and travel together. The tour is your own!

  • Great trip. We enjoyed the countryside and the group very much.

The biking was relatively easy but the views and chateau visits were wonderful. It is a part of France we hadn't been to and it was great to learn its history (Joan of Arc, Francis I, etc.) and to see the places it occurred. We really enjoyed the Leonardo Da Vinci villa and the models of his work in Amboise. I thought the guides were informative and had great personalities. We were a large group, but everyone was friendly and we had nice sit-downs every night.

  • Great sites to see in spite of the rain

A very good tour to see the Loire valley... but plan on rain when you pack. The chateaux refuse to sign long term contracts with VBT during the prime summer months so you travel here with a good chance of rain. The trip leaders know this so are quite flexible in accommodating no riding guests for the day. I still rate my VBT tours as such: Andalusia... 4 stars (Only the lack of a post trip in Granada as opposed to Barcelona drops this from 5 stars-- the Albecin district, Sacromonte and the flamenco shows in the gypsy caves, etc. are worth more than one day in Granada.) Sicily (old trip to Aeolian islands)... 3 stars (Should have been rated moderate riding, not easy/moderate. Palermo is so-so for a pre trip.) Sicily (new trip to Syracuse)... 3 stars (I understand VBT is modifying this new trip to skip Palermo and add in Taormina.) Tuscan hills... 3 stars. (You probably know you're facing some good hill climbs! Should take a break or add another day to explore Siena-- big mistake skipping a day to explore this city just for another bike ride.) Danube to Budapest... 2 stars. (Skip a day's ride to explore Estergom; Hederval castle is so-so and so is the hotel outside Budapest at the tour's last biking days.)

The intire trip was a lot of fun, great guides, and a nice group of people, We loved the pre-trip in Paris, a wonderful city... nice hotel, well located. Loved Versailles! Having been to Russia, you can see they were copying the French. The bike trip in the Loiure Valley was outstanding, a great destination, lots of history, a learning experience. Our guides, Pierre and Nico were outstanding, very accomodating in every way, very knowledgeable, fun to be with. Great memories. Ed Pasquesi

  • Beautiful scenery, good exercise, some history, below average eats!

Loved the location of the bike trails along the river and through the darling towns of the Loire Valley, as well as the flexability to bike all day or part of the day. The hotels were great to poor. Overall the food was very mediocre in an area that is known for food and stakes their reputation on it - FRANCE. Guides were service oriented, bikes and helmets were great. Need more then just chateaus to look at each day however.

  • If you like beautiful countryside, wonderful sites and great biking this tour is for you!

The Loire Valley tour really has it all. On the tour you bike along this wonderful countryside filled with flowers and gardens that make this such an important agricultural region for France. Along the way you come upon fabulous chateaus - built for Kings and Queens. Even if you have seen pictures, you can hardly imagine how amazing these structures are and how they tell the history of france and the Loire Valley. These amazing edifices were built at a time when royalty filled the Loire Valley and they reflect a time in history that cannot and will not be recreated. Of course you must stop and indulge in wonderful French food to sustain yourself on your next bike outing and what better place to dine then in this valley where so much of what is served is grown locally and is of course delicious. Each day offers a new and exciting visual and historical experience and each ride enables you to enjoy the beauty of this pastoral region. Finally you will marvel at the world famous gardens that are found along the way. And, all that you discover and experience will stay with you for a long long time after you return home.

  • Great tour in France

This tour has a wonderful combination of biking, chateau touring and dining. On arrival in Paris we were met by a VBT representative who took us to our hotel in Paris. The hotel- Hotel Chateau Frontenac - is a great location for walking around Paris and we spent the day doing that and found a place for dinner. The hotel was very nice and the staff were terrific. The next day we went by bus to our starting point of Tavers (a town so small it isn't even on the map) and met our leaders, got our bikes and did an orientation ride to the nearby, somewhat larger town of Beaugency. The next five days were spent riding and touring chateaux and their gardens. (We also had a walking tour of the medieval town of Blois.) The short route each day was about 15 miles and the long route about 30, except on the last day when the long route was 45 miles. The riding was easy to moderate, much of it on dedicated bike paths along the Loire. The scenery, consisting of the Loire, the countryside above it, and numerous small towns and cities was absolutely beautiful. We rode into and out of Tours on a bike path along the river. We bought our own lunches on the way and there was always good food at reasonable (for France) prices. Touring the chateaux, Chambord, Chenonceau, Chaumont, Villandry, Azay le Rideau, was a good break from biking and interesting as well. We also visited Leonardo da Vinci's house in Amboise. The tour included admissions to many of the chateaux or gardens but not all. You can always skip a ride or part of it, or a chateau tour, in order to have more time to relax, but I didn't and would recommend doing them all. The hotels were very nice with great breakfasts. You don't feel guilty having several croissants if you've biked 30 miles the day before. About half the dinners were included and the food was very good. For dinners on our own it was easy to find good restaurants. On the way back to Paris by minivan, we stopped for a few hours at Versailles. Then we went on to a very nice hotel near the airport. I can't overstate how wonderful our two tour leaders were. They adjusted our bikes as needed, oriented us thoroughly every day, helped us find places to eat and did everything one could possible expect. I would absolutely recommend this tour. And, of course, the Loire region has great wine!

Despite rare unseasonable weather, and my disabling injury beforehand, the tour was a marvelous experience! I definitely hope to take more VBT vacations in future. We had a fabulous experience riding bikes through the Loire Valley in the beautiful French countryside. VBT handled all the details perfectly. Nothing was left to chance. We loved our guides, our accomodations, the side trips, the food. Everything but the weather was A++++. We just happened to have our vacation during the coldest, wettest May since 1948! This was a beautiful Tour of the Loire Valley on bicycle. The scenery, countryside, and tours of the chateaus and other lovely historic sites was amazing. The towns were delightful, the food was delicious, and the picnic by the river as well as the guided tours were certainly pluses! We had a wonderful time! Our guides were attentive and knowledgeable in various ways. Bruno was the best! The Pre-trip in Paris was fantastic as well. The hotel was beautifully situated and the amenities, room, and food for breakfast were great. We really enjoyed this visit in Paris, our third or fourth. A great Pre-Trip option with all the transfers for us and our baggage. Thanks!

  • A relatively easy trip punctuated by majestic castles and magnificent gardens.

There can be no better scenery than Loire Valley castles, rivers and gardens. Really no hills so the biking was easy and you could go long distances without much effort. Hotels were all notable in one way or the other. Particularly the last castle like hotel- the dining room was magnificent and we had two of the best dinners on the entire trip. The chef came out to speak with us-albeit mostly in French and you could tell he was justifiably proud of his restaurant and the unique meals he provided. And like most VBT trips the guides were extraordinarily helpful and made the trip most enjoyable.

Fantastic tour guides. Loved getting to experience France at ground level, waving to people as you cycle by. The last ride was worth the trip alone! • A fantastic experience; Loire Valley is beautiful and VBT is the way to see it!

France or a biking vacation was not on my list of things to do in the summer of 2012 (or ever). My brother and sister-in-law signed up for this trip and asked if I would be interested in joining them. I thought about it for several weeks, checked to see if my passport was still valid, read about VBT online, and then decided to take a chance and committed to the trip. I started riding my bike (after a 20 year hiatus) about 8 weeks before the trip, but only on weekends. The experience was fabulous. The Loire Valley is beautiful and steeped in history; chateaus and incredible gardens, wine caves and churches and houses carved into mountains. The trip leaders were extremely knowledgeable, funny and genuinely fantastic individuals. A very relaxing, stress free, worry free trip with attention to every detail including fresh lemon in the water bottles every morning! The hotels were incredible. Have you ever stayed in a room that had 2 stories? How about a bathroom with a skylight and views of a chateau? The food was delicious and plentiful but with the biking I actually lost a few pounds despite the amazing chocolate desserts and wine. This was my first VBT experience but it won’t be my last. I’ve already started looking at all the options for next summer. So many choices!

The bike tour of the Loire Valley was delightful! The trip leaders and itinerary accomodated guests wanting to bike just a little or alot. For guests only wanting to ride for a few hours each day, there were many wonderful chateaus, markets, and interesting old towns to visit. My husband and I wanted to bike alot and we felt sufficiently exercised by the end of the day as well as still having enough time to see the sights. I greatly dislike biking with fast moving traffic and there was almost none of that. Our trip leaders funny, fun, hard working, and knowledgable.

the only thing that might be improved is the daily route instructions. maybe some additional reference points either at turns or along the way, in order to verify that on right path. many riders wont have working cell phones in europe; if cell providers have reasonable add-on plans, add that info to your pre-trip instructions. i found a confusing typo in one street reference: rue du huit, not rue du 8. i dont speak french. a great trip, hard to find anything to complain about.

The Loire Valley had been on my bucket list of places to visit since I first began to read European sixteenth century history. Following historic personalities as they travel from chateau to chateau making history in the process created in me a desire to visit these places. Traveling on a bicycle with VBT provided the optimal method of seeing all of those beautiful and historic locations. Roaming around inside those incredible chateaus was a remarkable experience. I do believe I felt the ghost of Francis I smiling at me. Awesome.

  • Oh the Chateaus!

This was our most recent of our 13 VBT bike tours, and, like every one of the others, simply superb in every way; riding, food accommodations, scenery, guides, wines, and, perhaps most of all, overall value. The Chateaus along the way were dazzling, While the structures themselves were mind-bending in their grandeur, architecture, and pure imagery, the gardens were often grander still. Whatever you do, do not forget your camera! The cycling was most pleasant at all times, nearly always along one of central France's many quiet -running rivers, including, of course, the Loire itself. Always peaceful, and nearly devoid of traffic. There was no doubt we were cycling through a significant portion of French history, and you felt immersed in it at all times. Our final lodging was a chateau itself, making us feel like French royalty must have enjoyed centuries ago. This trip could not be better for anyone considering their first bike tour, or worried about the cycling aspect itself, or simply wanting a most relaxing way to tour, yet still getting ample daily exercise. In addition, our guides were skillful, informative, accommodating, pleasant, and performed all tasks with much good humor as well. A VBT-booked pretrip to Paris is of unmatched value, with perfect location for efficent touring.

  • This trip is one of the best in Europe. Great cycling, wonderful field trips, excellent meals, and top-of-the-line trip leaders.

This outstanding bike trip has all of the elements of a successful vacation: manageable distances between sites; spectacular castles, gardens and museums; well-informed leaders with a great sense of humor; and lovely accommodations for the weary rider at the end of a fun-filled, active day.

    Yes, I recommend this tour.

  • France offers stunning beauty.

The gardens and the accommodations were spectacular. The history and culture previewed by the trip leaders was very informative. And, of course, the food and wine! The bike rides were as advertised - flat and easy- but the views were awesome. Finally, VBT should insist that all travelers must go to Paris!.

  • Excellent!!!

It is hard for me to decide what was the highlight of this trip: visiting several chateaux of which Chenonceau was probably the most beautiful, riding through vineyards, or the signs warning of wild boars (I never saw one).

Had a great trip to the Loire Valley, France. The scenery was beautiful and the accommodations great The tour guides were very knowledgeable, catered to our needs and nice, nice people. The biking was just as described - not too hard, not too easy and lots of fun!!! We loved the "back up van" too. We hope to schedule with VBT again soon.

  • Beautiful chateaux great food!

I had been to France before and to the Loire Valley as well. This trip was a pleasure, both for the accommodations and the food. The leaders Pierre and Vincent were knowledgeable and helpful. France continues to be one if my favorite destinations.

  • Great biking, excellent hotels and dining.

Thoroughly enjoyable biking through beautiful central France. Although weather was chilly and wet, typical of spring in France, Hotel selection and meals were excellent and unique. I would recommend this trip to everyone.

  • Lovely trip

I recommend this tour for a beautiful excursion through the French countryside. The accommodations were more than adequate and I got more than one opportunity to test my French language skills, among native friendly French speakers, who were extremely tolerant of my basic French. Based on my experiences, I want to return to France! It is a gorgeous country.
