Itinerary

This itinerary is subject to change. Please refer to your Final Travel Booklet for the final itinerary

and updated information.

Day 1 of PRE-TRIP EXTENSION Depart U.S./Fly to Panama City, Panama/Transfer to Resort

Your flight departs from the U.S. for Panama early this morning. The particulars of your arrival overseas are detailed with your flight itinerary and airline tickets. Upon arrival, a VBT representative meets you and helps you transfer to your resort. En route to the resort we take a brief tour of Panama City and the Panama Canal's Miraflores Locks. VBT provides you with City Information in your Final Travel Booklet that includes information and recommendations on what to see and do in Panama City and in Soberania National Park during your stay.

Please Note: There is a $5 immigration fee when entering into the Panama airport.

Day 2 of PRE-TRIP EXTENSION Independent exploration

Participate in any number of optional activities today. You may wish to contact the resort prior to travel for information about activities available during your stay. Visit the locks and learn about the Panama Canal's role in history. Walk the trails in the primary rainforests within nearby Soberania National Park. Kayak the Chagres River, spotting iguanas, caimans, and birds.

Your base for independent exploration is a comfortable resort located on the edge of Gatun Lake in the heart of a lush rainforest. The resort offers Panama's only aerial tram as well as several restaurants, a full service spa, and facilities for arranging local activities.

Additional information and tour reservations are available on the resort's website: www.gamboaresort.com/activities/index.cfm

Day 1 of WALKING TOUR Depart U.S./Fly to San Jose, Costa Rica/Warm-up walk/Welcome reception

VBT No-Air Package guests: Meet your VBT Trip Leaders and the rest of the group at Bosque de Paz Lodge at noon. Please contact the lodge if any travel delays or changes occur; the staff will pass the message on to your VBT Trip Leaders.

VBT Air Package guests: Upon arrival at the San Jose airport in Costa Rica, claim your luggage and clear customs. VBT's local representative will be holding a VBT sign outside the customs area in your arrival terminal, and will help you transfer by minibus (approximately 90 minutes) to Bosque de Paz Ecological Reserve where you begin your trip. En route we will make a stop at Zarcero, an agricultural village known for its pink- and blue-hued San Rafael Cathedral and the curiously groomed topiary that adorns its grounds. The church's groundskeeper clips these bushes and hedgerows into animals and archways, and it's a delight to mingle among his leafy sculptures.

VBT Pre-Trip Extension guests: This morning, transfer to the airport for your flight to Costa Rica. A VBT representative will meet you on arrival at the San Jose airport, after you claim your luggage and clear customs. You will then transfer to Bosque de Paz Ecological Reserve.

Bosque de Paz is a lush paradise of vibrant flora and exotic birds nestled in the central volcanic mountain range. Our hosts, Frederico and Vanessa González-Pinto and their son Frederico Jr., are committed to eco-tourism and education, as their unspoiled 3,000 acres show. Our hosts have three main objectives as stewards of this land: conservation, research, and education. They reinvest a portion of their earnings to purchase more forest for their reserve, and they're not alone. Each year, ecologically-minded Costa Ricans like them acquire forested lands in their area to protect them from development.

After lunch, we begin our trip with an orientation and warm-up stroll on the verdant grounds. This evening, the lodge owners will host a special welcome reception for us. Mingle with your walking companions here and during our dinner that follows.

REMINDER: It can be cool in the evenings and on cloudy days at the elevations visited on this trip. You will want to have a lightweight layer of warm clothing for travel in any month of the year. You may wish to have a pair of water shoes or casual sandals for when you visit the beach at Villa Caletas, or when you are at Manuel Antonio.

Day 2 of WALKING TOUR Bosque de Paz Cloud Forest

We put on our walking shoes this morning to set out further into this magnificent, green wonderland. Bosque de Paz forms a rich biological corridor between Poás Volcano National Park and Juan Castro Blanco National Park. It is endowed with a spectacularly rich ecosystem. These mountains are part of the Continental Divide, a vast range that stretches north all the way to the Canadian Rockies and Alaska.

Bosque de Paz is a bird-lover's paradise dotted with orchid gardens and Eden-like walking trails. Its tropical forests harbor rich and diverse ecosystems unparalleled anywhere. In fact, any one tree could play host to 1,000 different species of living organisms.

We can begin our ambles on level trails, and there are options for longer or more challenging walks. Well-tended trails lead us into a unique and mist-laden cloud forest of orchid-dotted trees and lacy tree ferns. Our destination is a nearby waterfall, and with every step we leave civilization farther behind.

If you fix your gaze upward to the canopy overhead, you just might spot howler and spider monkeys, or some of the reserve's 331 bird species. Our trail guide can help us distinguish between the Black-banded Woodcreeper and Scaly-throated Leaftosser, among countless others.

After lunch, we meander to a nearby community or continue to explore other trails at the Reserve. Dinner tonight is at our lodge.

Day 3 of WALKING TOUR Rainforest Mysteries and Arenal Volcano

After breakfast, we shuttle to Arenal. En route we stop at typical working farm, to chat with some passionate farmers about their tropical plants and other nutritional products they harvest and market around the world. We'll take some time to stroll their gardens, maybe spotting some cacao and prickly fruit on low-hanging branches. They're all part of the delicate balance between nature and man that is nurtured here daily, and we hope to come away with a deeper respect for the ways in which the rainforest – Earth's most vital ecosystem – can enhance our lives.

We continue after lunch to Arenal. Later, settle into our next tropical haven with views of Arenal Volcano. Please note that Arenal's eruptions are unpredictable and therefore may not be active during your visit. Later this evening, put on your dance shoes as we learn some typical dances from local children.

Day 4 of WALKING TOUR Canopy Adventure / Arenal Volcano

We begin today by ascending into the jungle canopy and hooking into a thrilling zip-line network for a macaw's-eye view. High in the forest, we'll whiz through lush treetops and glimpse vibrant blooms that can only catch the sun up here.

We get back down to earth on the western slopes of Arenal Volcano, tracing short trails through secondary forests and cooled lava fields. Though this morning's walk along mostly dirt roads is easy, we may have gradual ascents and descents that require careful footing. You'll find the primeval, otherworldly landscapes fascinating. There are also options for more strenuous walks over the cooled lava fields.

Arenal is Costa Rica's youngest volcano, just a few thousand years old. Since its last major eruption 40 years ago, huge columns of ash have risen from its crater, the ground has rumbled underfoot, and spectacular orange lava has flowed from its perfectly conical peak. It has served as a daily reminder that the Earth is very much alive in Costa Rica.

We return to our resort for lunch on our own and continue to independently explore the numerous trails that meander through the Lost Iguana resort.

Before dinner, we head to the Ecotermales Hot Springs, a masterpiece of masonry and flowing waters operated by the Hidalgo family. Immersed within the rainforest, this is the smallest and most private of Arenal's thermal baths. Amidst stone walls and terraces, we'll lose ourselves for a spell in a sanctuary of spring-fed waters. Relax in one of its four soothing pools or shower yourself under its waterfall. Afterwards, we continue to the nearby town of La Fortuna for dinner on our own at one of the town's several restaurants.

Day 5 of WALKING TOUR Crocodiles in the Tarcoles River / Carara Biological Reserve

This morning we continue to San Ramon, a close-knit village surrounded by dramatic mountain ranges. Locally, it's known as the “City of Presidents and Poets” since five of Costa Rica's presidents and several of its famed poets hail from here. Today, this farming town is known for its sugarcane and coffee. There'll be time to walk along its charming main street.

Later we drive from the Central Valley across Costa Rica's majestic mountains to the Pacific Coast. Have your camera's ready as we cross the Tarcoles River for our photo opportunity to see some of the largest crocodiles anywhere. Bordering the Tarcoles River is one of the most diverse parks in Costa Rica – the Carara Biological Reserve. Today's walk will take us through this biologically-diverse park with it's variety of plants, birds and animals. The park is also home to more than 300 scarlet macaws, so keep eyes and ears open and hopefully you will have a sighting of this colorful bird.

Next, it is on to our luxurious resort for the final two nights of our Costa Rica walking adventure. There's a good chance we'll be welcomed upon check-in by the unique sounds of macaws returning to their nesting areas in the nearby Carara Biological Reserve. Don't forget your cameras this evening for what may be one of the most spectacular sunsets over the Pacific. The hotel's amphitheater offers stunning views of the coastline and the Gulf of Nicoya.

Day 6 of WALKING TOUR Manuel Antonio National Park

After breakfast we shuttle to where the rainforest meets the beach for our morning walk - Manuel Antonio National Park.

Manuel Antonio National Park may be small, but it is considered Costa Rica's most stunning national preserve. The park offers three pristine beaches, a magnificent setting with a view to the islands offshore, a network of lush rainforest trails, and wildlife at every turn. You are almost guaranteed a close-up visit on your morning walk with sloths, coatimundis and three different monkey species.

After our sumptuous picnic lunch on the beach you will have time to further explore the National Park, swim in the Pacific or simply take a siesta under the swaying palms, the sound of playful monkeys overhead. Later we return to our resort before gathering for a festive farewell dinner.

Day 7 of WALKING TOUR Doka Coffee Estate / Depart for U.S.

After breakfast, we go right to the source for our morning coffee: the award-winning Doka Coffee Estate. This is the country's largest family-owned plantation, operated by the Vargas-Ruiz family for 70 years. The estate's location on the slopes of Poás Volcano and its perfect altitude and climate make for an ideal coffee-growing environment. We'll tour the farm, pick a few coffee beans, head to the mill to learn about the coffee-brewing tradition of chorrear, and of course taste some fresh-roasted coffees.

After lunch, we return to the airport for our return flights home or to begin our post- extension to Guanacaste's Gold Coast.

NOTE: There is a departure tax that needs to be paid upon departing Costa Rica. The tax must be paid at the airport in US dollars, or by credit or debit card. The current tax is US $28/per person. VBT recommends that this be paid in cash as using a debit or credit card will incur additional fees.

VBT No-Air Package guests and VBT Air Package guests: We will assist you to the San Jose airport, and you'll fly back to the U.S. late this afternoon. Flight departures from San Jose airport prior to 5 p.m. are not recommended; those departing earlier must make transfer arrangements from the last hotel at their own expense.

VBT Post-Trip Extension guests: If you have chosen the optional Post-Trip Extension, we will assist you to the San Jose airport and you'll fly later this afternoon to Liberia in Costa Rica's Guanacaste Province. Please note that you are only allowed ONE piece of luggage weighing no more than 30 pounds. Additional luggage or luggage weighing in excess of 30 pounds will incur additional fees at the airlines discretion. Upon arrival in Liberia, you will collect your luggage and meet your VBT representative for your transfer to Playa Hermosa. VBT provides you with City Information in your Final Travel Booklet to help you explore on your own. It includes information and recommendations for your independent stay in Playa Hermosa Guanacaste.

Please note: VBT transfer times and departure points are finalized in advance and cannot be modified for individual guests. If you extend your stay beyond the scheduled program dates, return transportation to the airport will be at your own expense.

Day 2 of POST-TRIP EXTENSION Independent exploration of Playa Hermosa and Guanacaste

Enjoy a day at leisure on the beautiful beach of Playa Hermosa. The crystal clear waters of the Gulf of Papagayo offer perfect swimming conditions. You may also walk to the nearby tidal pools and even further to secluded beaches. Or if you prefer, explore Costa Rica's Guanacaste Province with various optional excursions -- the hot mud baths of Miravalles Volcano National Park; Ricon de la Vieja National Park; Santa Rosa National Park, home to the largest arid rainforest in Central America and one of the most historical sites of Costa Rica; or the wetlands of Palo Verde National Park. If you prefer a more active day, take advantage of whitewater rafting on the Corobici River. Other water sports -- jet skiing, snorkeling or scuba diving -- are steps away from the hotel.

VBT provides you with City Information in your Final Travel Booklet that includes information and recommendations on what to see and do in Playa Hermosa during your stay.

You'll stay in beachfront suites with private open-air Jacuzzis and amazing views of Playa Hermosa and the Pacific.

Day 3 of POST-TRIP EXTENSION Depart for home

This morning, transfer to the airport in Liberia for your flight to the U.S.

Please note: VBT transfer times and departure points are finalized in advance and cannot be modified for individual guests. If you extend your stay beyond the scheduled program dates, return transportation to the airport will be at your own expense.

Costa Rica’s Guanacaste Province is located on the northern stretch of the country’s Pacific Coast. The region’s dry tropical climate creates a varied landscape of vast grassland plains at the base of the Guanacaste Mountains and caldera volcanoes to the east, while the west is fronted with stunning coastlines and pristine beaches known as the Gold Coast.

Playa Hermosa, which means beautiful beach in Spanish, is a two kilometer gray sand beach along the Gold Coast. It has been recognized as one of the best maintained beaches in Costa Rica and has earned the Bandera Azul or Blue Flag award which is given to only those beaches with the highest environmental standards and safety facilities. Its crystal blue calm waters in the Papagayo Gulf make it a favorite for swimmers.

Playa Hermosa has long been a hidden getaway for wealthier Costa Rican families and therefore is dominated by beachfront estates rather than large resorts. It is seldom as crowded as its neighboring beaches on the Gold Coast.

This is a perfect escape for those seeking quiet walks along secluded beaches. There are ample optional activities such as snorkeling or diving in some of the best dive spots in Costa Rica; a sunset coastal cruise; white water rafting; and visits to the nearby city of Liberia or an early 19th century ranch with its Costa Rica cowboy lore.

Your accommodations at the eco-boutique hotel of Bosque del Mar are in one of 6 large beachfront suites with private Jacuzzi and fabulous ocean views.

Available only with the Air Inclusive Package.

Note: Single supplement for this extension is $245.
