Introducing VBT Cross-Country Skiing
A new way to discover the world’s great winter wonderlands
The woods are silent save for your skis gliding in rhythm along a valley trail fringed with towering pines, as your breath hits the crisp air. The craggy peaks sparkle like diamonds on the valley walls, and on a rocky spur you make out a majestic mouflon ram. Ahead, plumes of smoke signal the hut where your friends await to share a hearty lunch and warm drinks. Icicles dangle from the eaves like bejeweled teeth, but the sound of laughter guarantees warm smiles when you walk through the door.
A winter pastime for everybody
Maybe you once enjoyed downhill skiing, but are now ready for a more horizontal workout. Perhaps walking or cycling is your passion, but one you sadly put aside during the winter. Maybe you’re an avid cross-country skier, but never considered combining this sport with your love of world travel. If any of these scenarios strike a chord, you’re ready for a VBT Cross-Country Ski trip.
Anyone who is reasonably fit and enjoys being active in the great outdoors will enjoy cross-country skiing with us. Never cross-country skied before? No worries…. Our Trip Leaders and ski instructors will provide lessons and tips. Like walking or biking, it’s not a sport that requires exceptional balance, dexterity or stamina—anyone can do it! Because we offer a choice of routes, you can ski as much or as little as you want. Our lodgings are all close to the trails and many offer other pastimes (alpine skiing, sledding, skating, snowshoeing and more) to round out your days. Of course, there will be many non-skiing activities included to showcase the alpine cultures we visit – not to mention plenty of après ski pampering in some of the world’s finest winter lodgings.

Spring and summer aren’t the only times to expand your cultural horizons. Travel with us during the winter and a whole new world opens up. Aside from the stupendous alpine scenery, winter is a great time for museum visits, wine fairs, Old World Christmas markets, concerts and our signature encounters with artisans, historians and local families who welcome us into their homes. There will be cooking classes, language lessons and plenty of spa services to enjoy after a day on the trails. And because our Trip Leaders are all residents of the area, you’ll always have an insider by your side to show you the lay of the land.

Fine food and dining at the end of the trail
As with our walking and biking tours, our cross-country trips include many meals and all accommodations. (In fact, because we have long-standing relationships with many of our providers, we can offer our deluxe hotels at outstanding values.) We’ve hand-picked smaller lodgings that are filled with character, yet offer all the comforts you crave. As with all our trips, sampling local cuisine will be a memorable part of your adventure. Daily breakfast (a hearty one!) is always included and typically either lunch (often at huts or taverns along the trail) or dinner (perhaps at a mountaintop restaurant or a nearby inn) is provided each day to enjoy with great company—your fellow VBT travelers.
